Analysis :: Split Wide Measure Group?
May 14, 2015I have a wide fact table that I'm feeding to an SSAS cube. I was advised that splitting the measure group into two will improve performance when querying the cube.
I cannot find any documentation that supports this, in fact I get a blue curved line suggesting that I merge the measure groups since they have the same dimensionality and granularity.
I guess the best practice is what the blue line states, but without knowing the internals of SSAS I can undestand that a smaller measure group may be easier to handle, or create more specific aggregations for.
Online Index Rebuild - Same Page Counts After?

Initial Page Space Used = 85.7% (sys.dm_db_index_physical_stats - avg_page_space_used_in_percent)
Index and data size are almost unchanged after an ONLINE rebuild of the clustered index. Page count actually goes up by 800. No fill factor or pad index settings. Page space used = 99.2%
During an OFFLINE rebuild the page count drops by ~20%. Page space used = 99.8%.
How can the pages be 99.2% used yet the number of pages hasn't gone done from the ONLINE rebuild?
I'm getting the feeling a shortcut was taken somewhere. Does an ONLINE rebuild only reorganize leaf level index pages but not any of the upper levels? Essentially it puts the pages in order but doesn't do any structure consolidation like OFFLINE?
It would seem that you're missing out on some of the benefits of defragmenting if your data is still spread across more pages and you don't get as many rows per read or it takes more reads to go down your tree to get to your data.
How Can I See Page Split Statistics?
Aug 7, 2007I'm only now discovering DBCC. In particular; I'd like to tune my fill factors on Clustered Tables with the goal of reducing excessive page splits over time yet not allowing so much space that paging space gets wasted.Question 1: How can I run a statistic on one (or all) tables that gives me the information to do this tuning and do you know a good link/reference to describe it's use?For columns that I know will always be populated later, and the size is also known (integers, char(1), etc) I plan to assign initial values where the business logic doesn't need to distinguish between Null and Zero, for example. Question 2: Does a reindex (Create Index ... with Drop_Existing ...) reorder these and eliminate splits and fragmentation? If so; then I can be more aggressive with assigning higher numbers on very large tables since I re-index weekly.Thanks; I hope I'm not over-using you guys and I appreciate all the help. Hope the questions aren't lame. I do try my own searches but sometimes the voice of experience ... (wading boot alert).

Recovery :: Server Cluster Resource Fails To Come Online And Pending Online State
Nov 3, 2015We have SQL cluster installed on top of windows cluster on VM environment. Node1 and Node2 under Windows Failover Cluster. SQL instance is currently on node2 the instance is up and running, but SQL Cluster service remains online pending and it restarts the instance on every 5 minutes.
SQL Browser service are running successfully.TCP/IP ports are enabled and configured.If we start the SQL server agent it is on for seconds and stopped immediately  .Cluster Service is attempt to connect to the SQL service every few minutes (setting in SQL cluster resource) for the IsAlive check, if this fails then the SQL resource is restarted even if the instance was online. Hope this is what happening exactly.

Sep 17, 2015I cannot create a measure that returns results for dates that do not exist in the fact table despite the fact that the components included in the measure contain valid results for these same dates.Creature a measure that counts the number of days where the "stock qty" is below the "avg monthly sales qty for the last 12 months" (rolling measure).Here is the DAX code I have tried for the measure (note that filter explicitly refers to the date table (called Calendar) and not the fact table):

Below you can see the sub measures (circled in red) are giving results for all days in the calendar.Highlighted in yellow are dates for which the StkOutCnt measure is not returning a result. Having investigated these blank dates, I am pretty confident that they are dates for which there are no transactions in the fact table (weekends, public holidays etc...).why I am getting an "inner join" with my fact table dates despite the fact that this is not requested anywhere in the dax code and that the two sub measures are behaving normally?

I can't find any explanation why is it string1 and string 2 of the footer section of my report displayed separately from the expression3 which is aligned on it and the rest of the object on the second page.
The expected design is that all Footer items should be displayed together of whether it is placed on the first page or on the last page.
As a workaround of this, I converted string 1 into an expression (Added = and enclosed the string with double quote).. As a result, all of the items in the Footer section are now placed together on the last page of the report.
I also remember one of the issue I encountered before where the Footer items where placed together on the first page and still have space at the bottom of the page, but then expression 6 is forced to display (alone) on the last page of my report.
I can't find any discussion related to this, I wish somebody could give me an idea why RS behaved like this.

Is there a way to setup a measure in the model on a per table level to show last processed date for each individual table? LastDataRefresh:= MAX ('TableA'[LastProcessed])
For example: Our sales table may update three times a day, where as our warehouse inventory table is only updated nightly.I wanted to let end users see by adding a measure for each table when the last process event was for a given table in the model.
Online Rebuild Index Table Lock
May 27, 2008I have a very large table with approximately 400 million records in it. Every 10 seconds approximately 150 insert are done on the table. I am attempting to rebuild one of the indexes (non-unique, non-clustered). But when I run a script to rebuild the index online (i have enterprise edition) the VB.NET service that is attempting to insert generates SQL timeout errors (timeout set to 30 seconds). From an article on msdn they state that long term table locks are not held for the duration of the index operation. So what am I missing because I am not close to being a DBA. I know SQL Server is not a SCADA but it is not my choice.

SQL 2012 :: Rebuilding Online Clustered Index Locks Table
Jun 3, 2014I was under impression that rebuilding index online largely means that the index will remain available for use during rebuild and my procs and query will be able to use it during rebuild. Also my understanding was that table will be locked very briefly while the schema change will be completing.But when I was rebuilding the clustered index online on a large table with some 3 million records, the table got locked and I was not able even to read the data from it for some 5 minutes. Then I cancelled the operation as it was production server and it was one of our main transaction table.
Is rebuilding index online supposed to work this way? The table has no other index.The parameteres I used are:

I have a date dimension table (dimdate). Has a row for every day of every year (2006-2015)
I have a work entry fact table (timedetail). Has a row for every work entry. Each row has a worked date, and this column has a relationship to dimdate.
Our holidays fluctuate, and we offer floating holidays that our staff get to pick. So we cannot hard code which individual dates in dimdate as holidays. So what we have done is added a column to our dimdate table called HolidayHoursPerMonth.Â
This column will list the number of holiday hours available in the given month that the individual date happens to fall within, thus there are a lot of duplicates. Below is a brief example of dimdate. In the example below, there are 0 holiday hours for the month of June, and their are 8 holiday hours for the month of July.

I have a pivot table create based of the fact table. I then have various date slicers from the dimension table (i.e. year, month). If I simply drag this column into the pivot table and summarize by MAX it works when you are sliced on a single month, but breaks if anything but a single month is sliced on. Â
I am trying to create a measure that calculates the amount of holiday hours based on the what's sliced, but only using a single value for each month. For example July should just be 8, not 8 x #of days in the month.Â
Listed below is how many hours per month. So if you were to slice on an entire year, the measure should equal 64. If you sliced on Jan, Feb and March, the measure should equal 12. If you were to slice nothing, thus including all 15 years in our dimdate table, the measure should equal 640 (10 years x 64 hours per year).

Smarter Table Build - Might Split The Table

It is an ETL tool fordata warehousing.I have a problem with time it takes to load new changes, and I amseeking advice on a better way to manage the data.I have a table that tracks student attendance and it contains about 13million records. On a daily basis, there are 5,000 - 20,000 inserts and10,000 - 50,000 updates.The daily data comes for two different text files from my operationsystem; current and historical (CLSFIL and CLSHIS).The data is loaded into a staging area from the operational system,where data cleansing and other fields are added to the table.The final step is delivering the table to my target database, which isused for reporting.Heres the situation: I find it takes 45 minutes to do a relationalupdate, where only the records that changed in the last day will beloaded. However, if I choose the native API load instead of aRelational Load, it can load all 13M records in 7 minutes. The table isheavly indexedAt some point, the API load will take more time than the relationalload, (the changes and new records will remain a constant, but the filewill continue to grow).I'm seeking another solution is more efficient. I'm considering twotables for history and current and creating a view for reporting via aunion.This a good idea? How can I make the view effeicent to use the whereclause? I have an application that runs on several sites that has a table with 36 columns mostly ints och small varchars.
I currently have only one table that stores the data and five indexes and since the table on one location (and others soon) has about 18 million rows I have been trying to come up with a better solution (but only if needed, I dont think I have to tell you that I am a programmer and not an dba).
The db file size with all the indexes is more then 10gb, in it self is not an problem but is it a bad solution to have it that way?
The questions are:
Are there any big benefits if i split it into several smaller tables or even smaler databases and make the SPs that gets the data aware that say 2006 years data is in table a and so on?
Its quite important that there are fast SELECTS and that need is far more important then to decrease the size of the database file and so on.
How many rows is okay to have in one table (with 25 columns) before its too big?

I have a set of StaffID saved using "," in the table class -------- 10,20,30
Now i want a Query to get the staff name -- hari, gopal, sekar , by using the classID

Dec 18, 2007I having a bit of confuse here. Can you please help me?
I have about 5000 records all ready in oen table. Everything that I query is related to that table one way or the other. Now i having 2000 - 3000 more records to store in the database. In term of relation database then I can store the new data in a different table so I can can query it. Most of my queries are searching.
So the question is is this better to store the data in another table or should store everything in the old table? Thanks a lot in advance for your help. I really do appreciate that.

T-SQL To Split Data From One Table Into Two Tables?
Feb 21, 2005What's the best way to convert a large set of records from a simple schema where all fields are in one table to a schema where fields are split across two tables? The two table setup is necessary for reasons not worth getting into here.
Doing this via cursor is pretty straightforward, but is there a comparable set-based solution?
Here are sample create table commands. Obviously, the example below is simplified for discussion purposes.
