How To Use The Dynamic Properties DTS Task

I recently came across a DTS made by an experienced DBA and was impressed by the use of Dynamic Properties DTS Task used. As I understood the DTS was generic and if I'm not mistaken, can be easily transferred to another server/machine on an AS IS basis and without having to change any of the properties (server name, login, password etc.) for the source or destination server.
This seems to be a really neat feature.
I tried to put this to use but am having problems regarding how to proceed... Unfortunately I have not been able to find any article either which addresses this particular request and takes a novice step by step so that this feature can be used.
Will appreciate any help.

Sql 2000 Dynamic Properties Task

DTS now has a dynamic properties task in sql 2000 which at a first glance is pretty cool. However i do not know if it would sort out a particular issue I have.
I need to have a generic DTS package that pulls data from different locations based on the project selected by a user. The source is a btrieve database
The name of the tables change with the project, so for example the F24 project would have its source table named F24TACT and the IFO source would have its source table named IFOTACT.
I need to be able to dynamically retrieve the table name from a local SQL table and assign this name to the data pump for the data extraction..
I don' t know if this is achievable in DTS. I can retrieve the value into a look up variable but how can i set it at runtime ?

The location will only have theone file.The file name will be different every day. The source files will belocatedin a subdirectory called 'outgoing'.My first approach to this has been to use a Dyamic Properties Task tosetthe SourceFileName of the FTP Task. Dynamic Logging Properties In MS SQL DTS Packages
Feb 7, 2007Since I can't seem tofind the Microsoft SQL 2000 forum, I will post this here:
I currently have logging enable on several of my packages.
However, we are still in development of our packages and are reaching upwards
of 100 and logging will eventually need to be active on all of them. In
production, there will still be a development server and a production server,
both with different server names and user id/pwd.
I am looking for a way to dynamically change the logon information for the
logging so that we do not have to have someone go through and manually change
the options. I have tried using Dynamic Properties Task, but this only works on
the 2nd run of the package.

DTS Old Style And Dynamic Properties Tasks
Sep 11, 2007Im using embedded SS2000 DTS packages in SSIS. These legacy packages use Dynamic Properties Tasks to pick up connection settings from a named ini file. The name of that ini file needs to change occasionally. To date the only way we have of doing this is resetting all the dynamic properties to point at the new ini file. Unfortuntely there are a lot of connections and properties and there is no budget to recreate these packages in SSIS. There must be an easier way?!
Does anyone know how to quickly change Dynamic Properties Tasks to look at a new ini?

After DTS Migration is "successful", I opened up dynamic properties step but I saw codes were all commented out inside the public class ScriptMain. Since I am not familiar with Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime, I'm not sure what methods I should use as there aren't much examples available online. How do I do the following in SISS way?

I have a dts package that currently uses a dynamic properties task to set the values of global variables. Each variable is based on the value of a query to the database.
I am in the process of migrating this dts package to SSIS but cannot find an equivalent function. I have looked at property expressions but cannot get this working the same way.
Any help would be appreciated.

How To Convert Dynamic Properties To SSIS Package Config?
Mar 27, 2006I'm currently trying to convert over packages from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005. The biggest obstacle at the start has to do with converting my "Dynamic Properties" control. I use it to read an .ini file and load the user name and password to my connections. With 2000 it's nice and easy 1 file 3 lines. While trying to convert it I€™ve had nothing but problems. I've tried the Registry Entry but it forces everything into the Current User and I can't use that I need local machine. There is no documentation and I can't have a xml file with 1000 different username and password settings because 1 person has to update that file with the new passwords. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

The global variable basically executes a bat file.
How do i set this up in ssis. The migration failed to properly convert this task.

SQL 2012 :: Connection Properties Versus SSMS Server Properties

Database="XXXXXXX",Network="YYYYYY"; strangely no server is specified in the string, but it is specified in the ODBC Connection file.
I am trying to do a new server registration in SSMS for this database.However, I don't understand where the network spec is placed.
Under Registered server name I've tried:
YYYYYYXXXXX
When I browse the server for the database instance list, I receive "network path was not found".
I even tried:"XXXXXXX",Network="YYYYYY" for the registered server name.Same error message.
What am I doing wrong ?

regarding the product. I have looked for the information on the web, but was not able to find
relevant information.
We are getting Source data from two of our client in the form of Excel Sheet. These Excel sheets
Are generated using reporting services. On examining the excel sheet, I found out that the name
Of the columns contain data itself, so the names are not static such as Jan 2007 Sales, Feb 2007 Sales etc etc.
And even the number of columns are not static. It depends upon the range of date selected by the user.
I wanted to know, if there is a way to import Excel sheet using Integration Services by defining the position
Of column, instead of column name and I am not sure if there is a way for me to import excel with dynamic
Number of columns.

Hi Anthony, I am glad the Web cast was helpful.
Kamal and I have both moved on to other teams in MSFT and I am a little rusty in that area, though in general dynamic numbers of columns in any format is always tricky. I am just assuming its not feasible for you to try and get the source for SSIS a little closer to home, e.g. rather than using Excel output from Reporting Services, use the same/some form of the query/data source that RS is using.
I suggest you post a question on the SSIS forum on MSDN and you should get some good answers.

SSRS 2005 - Email Report On Execution To Dynamic List With Dynamic Parameters = No Schedule

I have a need to display on screen AND email a pdf report to email addresses specified at run time, executing the report with a parameter specified by the user. I have looked into data driven subscriptions, but it seems this is based on scheduling. Unfortunately for the majority of the project I will only have access to SQL 2005 Standard Edition (Production system is Enterprise), so I cannot investigate thoroughly.
So, is this possible using data driven subscriptions? Scenario is:
1. User enters parameter used for query, as well as email addresses.
2. Report is generated and displayed on screen.
3. Report is emailed to addresses specified by user.
Any tips on how to get this working?

Merge Replication W/ Dynamic Row Filter - Not 'dynamic' After First Initial Sync?
May 2, 2007If anyone could confirm...
SQL Server 2000 SP4 to multiple SQL Server 2005 Mobile Edition on PDAs. My DB on SQL2k is published with a single dynamic row filter using host_name() on my 'parent' table and also join filters from parent to child tables. The row filter uses joins to other tables elsewhere that are not published to evaluate what data is allowed through the filter.
E.g. Published parent table that contains suppliers names, etc. while child table is suppliers' products. The filter queries host_name(s) linked to suppliers in unpublished table elsewhere.
First initial sync with snapshot is correct and as I expected - PDA receives only the data from parent (and thus child tables) that matches the row filter for the host_name provided.
However - in my scenario host_name <--> suppliers may later be updated E.g. more suppliers assigned to a PDA for use or vice versa. But when I merge the mobile DB, the new data is not downloaded? Tried re-running snapshot, etc., no change.
Question: I thought the filters would remain dynamic and be applied on each sync?
I run a 'harmless' update on parent table using TSQL e.g. "update table set 'X' = 'X'" and re-sync. Now the new parent records are downloaded - but the child records are not!
Question: I wonder why if parent records are supplied, why not child records?
If I delete existing DB and sync new, I get the updated snapshot and all is well - until more data added back at server...
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Is it possible (or not) to have dynamic filters run during second or subsequent merge?

Mixing Dynamic SQL With Non-Dynamic In Stored Proc

One column on the Assembly Table is a Function Name that contains some busniess rules.
OK, now I'm doing a Proof of Concept and I'm stumped.
Huuuuh!
I will ultimately have about 100 of these things. My plan was using Dynamic SQL to go execute the function.
Note: The function just returns a bit.
So; here's what I had in mind ...

Jun 15, 2008I have DNN installed on one server and now i need to move whole site to another server. I have moved the FTP files, and changed the conn string in config. How can i move the database? I dont have the database publishing webservice installed so i will need some other way. Does anyone know of a simple way to migrate from one sql server to another?

I'll be doing a migration of all my exisitng SQL7 databases to SQL2000. We are planning to buy new servers for the upgrade. What is the best way to move the entire database?
A) Use copy DB wizard?
B) Create own DTS package to move everything?
C) Script the entire DB and run it on the new server and then move the data?
D) Do a backup and restore it onto the new server?
What are the best options? Are there anything that i should be aware of?

SQL 2005 Migrate From DB2
Mar 8, 2008I'm migrating from DB2 to SQL 2005 workstation. I have tried all kinds and type of migration tools. The best way so far is using the import wizard to created an SSIS package. One little problem so far. I cannot get past the "Text was truncated or one or more characters had no match in the target code page" error. I get quite a few rows before it stops. I've looked for any "invalid characters" in the source data. The row it seems to stop on doesn't make sense. Is there a way to modify the SISS package file to not stop on truncation errors? Or, can I determine the proper code page to use? I've adjusted column data types and lengths but can't find a combination that works.

Hy all, my english is not so good so i try to explain...
I have this environment
2 Servers, one is sql 2000 an the other is sql 2005 (cluster)
My server 2000 is very old and we dont want to upgrade(hardaware) them and it have a lot of DTS´s packages (actually only DTS packages). I need to rewrite every package to SSIS, but my priority is take off this server transfering de DTS packages to SQL2005 and use in legacy mode.
How do i do this ?..In this moment i just want to transfer the packages to 2005 and use in legacy mode..there´s a diference between migrate and use in legacy mode ?

I have an application in which the database is currently in MySQL. The app is being re-written(in .net 3.5) and I would like to move the data to SQL Server 2005. What is the best may to get the data from MySQL to SQL Server. Any good tools out there? Idealy, I would be able to manipulate the data during the move, as I have plans for some schema changes, but I suppose I could always make them after migrating.
Please suggest any tools or methods, with your thoughts. I will evaluate any suggested tools. Also, SSIS is available for me, is that the best way?
