Missing SQL Server Agent

I'm learning SQL 2005 and installed the express ADV edition to my pc. But I miss the Agent service.
Is this included in express? Has it another name after SQL server 2000?

Feb 15, 2005My backup jobs have been failing and when I go in to services there is no SQLSERVERAGENT listed.
Anyone have any ideas on this one?

I am trying to schedule the backup job for a database in 2005 and I am not able to figure out where it is. I browsed through few topics in the forums and found that I can do using sql server agent in the SQL server management studio. But I do not see the sql server agent in the management studio. Any help is appreciated.

Agent && Replication - Missing And Missed!
Sep 21, 2006I can't believe this. MSDE was a great product and I'm sure that SQL Express is even better. The difference is that I can't migrate any of my company's applications to it because they rely on a Replication architecture (requiring Replication Publication). And SQL Agent, how are you supposed to keep the database in good shape if you can't run Maintenance Plans at scheduled intervals?
I know, there are third party products out there to compensate for the lack of the SQL Agent, but they don't solve the replication problem. Besides, the Agent still exists in other editions - it's not like it has been dropped completely. Why do we have to lose functionality and features? We have already lost the use of a second CPU and memory > 1GB. Why do they need to keep taking stuff out? Why don't they just limit access to the new feature-set?
I would rather lose the new features such as Report Server and Full Text Indexing and get the SQL Agent and Replication Publication back. I can almost understand that with a free product, they don't want to keep piliing new features in just to give them away - even though I'm sure the sale of the larger editions more than covers the R&D investment in their construction. Why can't we chose? Agent or Report Server, Replication or Full Text Indexing? I don't need some of these new features (others might), I just want the features that I used to have. Perhaps SQL 2005 setup can be made to choose 2 out of the 4 features?
Whats more, I can't even say that I'll just stick with MSDE, as it now has a limited support life. Microsoft announced that any SQL Server version prior to 2005 SP1 will NOT be supported on Vista or Longhorn Server (nor does it support anything less than Windows 2000 SP4 or Windows XP SP2 where MSDE does).
OK - let me get this right. We had something that has been taken away in the new version. Perhaps I don't deserve the new version if I don't pay for it - fine - I'll stick to the old one I already have. BUT wait... I can't use that on the new platforms coming out.
Are my entry-level customers going to pay for the Workgroup Edition (add AUD$1200 to my entry level edition application of AUD$1500) to replace the Replication Publisher and provide a Maintenance plan? Is anyone going to pay for the re-architecting and re-construction of my application to work around these new limitations?
I guess that will be me. Is this what happens for being loyal to MS products?
Please - give back the SQL Agent and Replication publication.

Snapshot Agent Missing Files.
Jan 16, 2007My Snapshot Agent for SQL Server 2005 sometimes does not fully complete. I am expecting around 2073 files in the snapshot folder but only get 492 (this number does change). I have immediate_sync set to true, so I should get a full snapshot every time. It seems to quit after all data has been BCP'ed out and before the schema generation starts. I do get the "The replication agent has not logged a progress message in 10 minutes. This might indicate an unresponsive agent or high system activity. Verify that records are being replicated to the destination and that connections to the Subscriber, Publisher, and Distributor are still active. " message in the MSSnapshot_history table.
I am guessing that there is some sort of blocking that is preventing the snapshot agent from continuing and then it times out and dies. But that is a total guess as I have not been able to observe the behavior, only the outcome.
Any suggestions to what the cause is or how I can fix it?

Agent History Intermittently Missing Condition
Jun 23, 2008Recently the Agent on our production server has exhibited a condition where the agent history is missing on around 80% of our jobs. The jobs still run but no history, we have cycled the services, rebooted etc but nothing rememdies the issue.
Has anyone else ever ecountered this with SS and if so do you have a solution?
Missing Log Output Section For SSIS Packages In The SQL Agent Job Properties

Hi All,
I have a requirement of logging the failure and the error of a job executing a SSIS package to text file.
However, when I go to job step -> Advanced, in the section "SQL Server
Integration Services Package" where that info to setup logging is, it
is blank and just says:
"There are no options for this command type"
Any ideas?
I thought that this might not be supported in Standard Edition as I am running standard edition. Then I checked on two other servers, where I have Enterprise edition with SP2. On one of the installations, I am able to give the log file, the other one still shows,
"There are no options for this command type"
What is the problem? Both of them I am using the sysadmin role account. I have proxy account created on both the SQL instances. I don't think this is the problem, but still I checked this.
Can anybody help me?

Execute Sql Server Agent Job Task - Job Immediately Returns Success... However Agent Job Is Still Running???
Nov 30, 2006when I run a package from a command window using dtexec, the job immediately says success.
DTExec: The package execution returned DTSER_SUCCESS (0).
Started: 3:37:41 PM
Finished: 3:37:43 PM
Elapsed: 2.719 seconds
However the Job is still in th agent and the status is executing. The implications of this are not good. Is this how the sql server agent job task is supposed to work by design.

I would appreciate any help here at all. I am pulling my hair out!
I am unable to start the snapshot agent or log reader agent from within SQL management studio. it fails on executing step 2 with unknown username or bad password.
I have checked all account details and they are correctly using my domain admin account. I can connect to SQL using teh same account and it also has sysadmin permissions.
If i copy the step 2 paramters and start from the cmd prompt (again logged in using the same domain account) they both start fine.
Any ideas would be gratefully received.
Cannot Start Log Reader Agent And Snapshot Agent
May 18, 2007I am testing peer to peer replication in our environment. I simulated a three node peer to peer topology and a local distributor.
For some wierd reason I cannot get the Log Reader Agent and snapshot agent to start. The domain account under which SQL Server Agent runs has administrator previlage on the box. I also use a domain account for SQL Server Service. (none of the passwords changed).
This is the error I am getting - "Executed as user: abc. A required privilege is not held by the client. The step failed"
Any ideas???

Sql Server Compact Edition Data Source Missing In Server Explorer
Apr 3, 2007Trying to learn how to use Sql Server CE, Tutorial says to open server explorer, add connection, new connection, select data source as .net sql ce (words to that effect). On my visual studio, it ain't there and I can't figure out how to get it there. I have uninstall all of the Sql Ce stuff and reinstalled it. So I'm missing some key link. What are the magic incantations to get to first base?

My Firewall is disable and i have not installed any antivirus softwares (including Norton internet Security....in many forums i got this suggestion but i think its not an issue,even though for solving this issue i performed new installation of Windows XP SP-2 )
Server Manager Missing
Jun 26, 2002I've recently upgraded my PC from ME to XP and now have a multi-user setting in my computer. I've tried reinstalling SQL 7; it did install but the Server Manager is missing, so I couldn't start the server. (By the way, what I have is the stand-alone type). Whenever I try to start the query analyzer, I get this error message: [Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][Shared Memory]SQL Server does not exist or access denied. Whenever I try looking for the server manager in the start-up menu, it always says a .exe file (if I'm not mistaken the sqlmangr.exe) is missing or has been moved. What could be the problem? I'm just beginning to learn SQL so if anybody can help me, please.

I have an issue with one of my production servers. I have a few production servers, and they all have the same objects. I do not want to create custom objects for each one, rather keep them all standard.
However, due to environment issues, I have one which does not have any linked servers.
I have a proc which queries either locally or across the linked server depending on the value of a switch. I want to install this proc on the server with no linked servers but it obviously fails.
I can guarantee the proc will never be called with the switch 'on' on that particular server. We still want to install this proc and call it with a switch of 0.
Please can somebody come up with something really clever.
The proc goes something like this:

32-bit Dtexec Missing On X64 SQL2005 Server
Sep 18, 2007Our production servers run Win 2003 x64. There is SQL Server 2005 x64 and Integration Services installed (both build 9.0.3175). SSIS is working between SQL Servers.
Now I have to import Excel but can't find the 32-bit version of dtexec. There is definite only the 64-bit version of dtexec installed.
Why does SSIS installation don't install the whole SSIS functionality?
What do we have to install to get the full SSIS functionality including 32-bit? We can't try and error on a running production server.

Missing SQL Server Management Studio

I am a novice at SQl Server, so apologise in advance if you think this is a really stupid question.
I have a windows XP laptop with Visual Studio 2005. I installed SQl Server 2005 Developer Edition but do not see the SQl Server Management Studio anywhere. The only thing in Programs/ SQL Server 2005 is SQL Server Configuration Manager. I then uninstalled it & installed SQL Server Express but encountered the same issue.
I would like to install the Developer Edition if possible. I have tried uninstalling & reinstalling a few times but it does not work.
Could someone please help in resolving this. Appreciate it!

I have installed an SQL 2005 Failover Cluster on a Two Node Active Passive Windows 2003 Cluster.If i am trying to failover from the Active node to the passive Node,The Sql Server,Sql Server Agent and SQL Analysis resources fail,However if i reset the passowrd in the services tab of the above three services on the pasive node,the resources come online.
Below is the brief of my setup
1.I have two Active directory domain controllers running Windows 2003 R2 Standard edition with SP2.
2.i have installed a Windows 2003 Two Node Active Passive Cluster as NODE1 and NODE2.
3.The Domain account used to install WIndows 2003 A/P Cluster is Clusteradmin.This account is the member of Administartors on the Domain as well as the Local Admin on NODE1 and NODE2.
4.SQL 2005 with SP2 is installed on both the Nodes as SQL 2005 Failover Cluster.The account used to install SQL 2005 is sqadmin.This account is the member of Administartors on the domain and the member of Local Admins on NODE1 and NODE2.
5.SLQ 2005 has four domain groups for 4 SQL Services.The Services are SQL Server,SQL Server Agent,SLQ Anaylisis Server and Full text Search.
6.Each of these servcie has a seperate service account created for them.All these service accounts areb the members of domain admin and the member of Local Admin on NODE1 and NODE2.
7.Each of these servcies is running under these servcie accounts in the Servcies tab in NODE1 and NODE2.
8.If i fail the resources from NODE1 to NODE2 ,The SQL Server,SQL Server Agent and SQL Anaylisis resources are failing.on going to the service tab of NODE 2 I reset the password for these services,the services come online.
10.The Cluster resources and MSDTC Resources are Failing over successfully.They are coming online successfully.
11,I have a problem with the SQL Server Resources,even if i failback to NODE1 from NODE2,the same resources are failing again.
Plz Advice.

Is there a difference with sql replication between sql server 2005 64bit and sql server 2005 32bit?
Both are on a Windows 2003 server. One is 32 bit and the other one is 64 bit.
The first time I set up sql replication (test environment), it was on a 32 bit sql server. This worked fine.
The second time I wanted to set up replication (live environment), it was on a 64 bit sql server. This didn't worked fine.
I can't call the sqlcesa30.dll file on the 64bit server with IIS. So I called the dll via a remote IIS server.
This worked but gave me the following error when calling the following URL:

After seeing this I looked up what ReadWriteDeleteMessageFile could mean. It appeared to be some NTFS acces problem. But when I checked the security settings, it all seemed to be ok.
Has anyone any idea what else to check? Or is sure that I must have done something wrong?

Ssis Package Can't Connect To Pop Server Over The Internet From Sql Server Agent
Dec 20, 2007Sql server agent is running under a domain account that is a member of administrators and domain users amongst others, and the package is executed as the service account. Connecting to servers on the same domain works and when I run it from the msdb package store in ssis (ssis runs under the network service account ...) it will connect to the pop server as well. Permissions, fiddly proxies .. the answer's out there somewhere

When I view the performance monitor in the development environment I can see the SQL Server object counter but on the production environment I can see all object except sql server objects.
What could the problem be ? Add chart on the production server shows me all ojects other that SQL Server and the same is not true for development !
SQL Server Entries Missing From Start Menu
Aug 10, 2006I have a 2003 Server which has two Named Instances of SQL Server 2000.
I need to add a third Named Instance, but when I logged onto the Server this morning, I noticed that all of the
'Microsoft SQL Server' Entries are missing from the START/PROGRAMS menu !! Enterprise Manager, BOL... everything!! The SQL Server Service Manager is running and both of my Instances are up and running (this is a production box). I can launch Enterprise Manager from MMC.EXE in WINDOWSSystem32 folder... very weird!!!!
In my Add/Remove Programs, I see MS SQL Server listed Twice.. one time for each of the two named Instances.
Has anyone ever seen this before??? Do you think it's safe to run SQL Server Installation to Install a Third Instance on this box???

SQL Server 2008 :: Master Database Missing
May 14, 2013Wierd issue of a missing master database - wierd because I would have thought this was a newbie topic but I've found nothing for it. I googled and had a 'decent' look through this forum and only found a bunch of topics on 'how to restore master database'.
I wouldn't have thought I need to restore the master database because my SSMS works fine and I can query the master database. I can also see it in the drop down list of available databases in the Query Designer toolbar. The problem is just that I can't see it in the list of databases. I can see all the other databases I've created, and I can see the master database in the DATA folder. But not in the SSMS.

I would like to fill in the NULL columns with data from the other row, and then select the one row that is filled with all data. I was able to use MAX() for a numeric value, but I am really stumped on the text data. Everything that I have tried is not working.

But I'm unable to see the SQL Browser services here. What is the remedy?
