I currently have an internal message system, and I want to modify the db design so users can create their own custom folders.
Currently I have just this table in use, with the bolded column, the one I want to add. With this design, I am thinking of defaulting each "folderID" in this table to a value of 0, which will denote the standard inbox folder. I think this is better because I don't think its necessary or beneficial to have each user have their own row in this table just for their standard inbox.
CREATE TABLE [dbo].[tblMessage_folders]
(
[folderID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL,
[userID] [int] NOT NULL,
[folderName] [varchar](50) NULL,
[dateCreated] [smalldatetime] NULL,
)
Any differing opinions, or anyone agreeing with me I would love to hear your opinions. I'm just want to be sure this doesnt create any problems I might not be seeing.
I have SQL Server 2008 Standard and whenever I right click on Maintenance Plans and select New Maintenance Plan and I name the plan and click Ok. I get an error message that says Key cannot be null. Parameter name: key (mscorlib)
When I press OK on this message, I see an error message that says Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio is unable to load this document: Could not load type "Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Runtime.Wrapper.IDTSPackageSigning 100'from assembly 'Microsoft.SqlServer.DTSRuntimeWrap.
Ok guys, I am trying to install Sql server 2005 on Vista but I am still stuck with this warning message in the System Configuration Check during Sql server 2K5 installation :
SQL Server Edition Operating System Compatibility (Warning) Messages * SQL Server Edition Operating System Compatibility
* Some components of this edition of SQL Server are not supported on this operating system. For details, see 'Hardware and Software Requirements for Installing SQL Server 2005' in Microsoft SQL Server Books Online.
Now, I know I need to install SP2 but how the hell I am going to install SP2 if Sql server 2005 doesn't install any of the components including Sql server Database services, Analysus services, Reporting integration services( only the workstation component is available for installation)?
Any work around for this issue?
P.S.: I didn't install VS.NET 2005 yet, can this solve the problem?
We've had Reporting Services running in a production environ. for 6 months fine, but from Saturday every report now causes the following error (in both the Report Manager and Soap calls):
An internal error occurred on the report server. See the error log for more details. (rsInternalError) Get Online Help
Specified argument was out of the range of valid values. Parameter name: date
Now, before you jump to conclusions - this error is occurring on reports with both parameters and no parameters (ie in reports that have no "date" parameter in the report).
The next bit of info is the weird bit...
It was working on Friday (25/March/2006) - so as a test, i switched the servers clock back to Friday - and BINGO... it worked. Then I changed it to Saturday (26th March) and it doesnt work. In fact for the next 7 days - the service will not work until April 2nd 2006 - (when I changed the systems date to the 2nd it worked again.) Moving forward, it looks like its working fine.
Does anyone have any suggestions? This is in a production environment, so obviously changing the sytsem date as a quick fix workaround wont suffice.
I am implementing the first Sql Service Broker use case in our Sql 2005 application, so forgive me if this is an obvious question. We will be using a service & queue to handle requests to download a batch of documents from a third party service. The basic workflow is: A. Web client requests a document download. B. Web application begins a conversation and sends a message requesting the download C. DownloadService stored procedure retrieves the message and attempts the document download. D. If the download fails, retry every 30 minutes up to max 5 attempts.
Other than (D), this is perfectly straightforward. I will describe the design I've come up with to retry after 30 minutes below. I would appreciate any suggestions on better ways to handle this within SSB.
My solution relies on a small state table: create table MessageState ( ConversationHandle uniqueidentifier NOT NULL, RetryCount int NOT NULL, MessageBody varbinary(max) NOT NULL )The web client begins a conversation and submits a message. It does not end the conversation, but rather the InitiatorQueue has an activation procedure to end its side of the conversation after the DownloadService ends them, as described here http://blogs.msdn.com/remusrusanu/archive/2006/04/06/570578.aspx.
The DownloadService logic, in pseudo-code: 1. Use a typical loop to get conversation groups and receive messages 2. If message type = DownloadRequest 2a. Call a stored procedure to attempt the download 2b. If successful, end conversation 2c. If not successful, add entry to MessageState and BEGIN CONVERSATION TIMER with a 30 minute timeout 3. If message type = 'http://schemas.Microsoft.com/SQL/ServiceBroker/DialogTimer' 3a. Look up conversation handle in MessageState 3b. Recall original MessageBody 3c. Call a stored procedure to attempt the download 3d. If successful, delete MessageState row end conversation 3e. If not successful and no retries left, delete MessageState row and end conversation with error 3f. If not successful and retries remaining, increment MessaageState.RetryCount and BEGIN CONVERSATION TIMER with a 30 minute timeout
The main downside I see to this solution is a certain lack of transparency. After step (2c) or (3f), "select * from DownloadQueue" will no longer show the pending request, although you can find it in sys.conversation_endpoints.
Is there a better idiom to solve this type of problem in SSB?
“There is an inconsistency between the SQL Server Login ID’s and their passwords with the passwords stored in the Solomon System Database. Please have the System Administrator run Database Maintenance and update the database using the Synchronize All Ownership & Security Update Scenario.
These system message popups when i'm trying to open a module or process some reports. What I did to fix this, i follow the instruction of system message but still the error occur rampantly.
Greetings everyone, I am attempting to build my first application using Microsofts Sql databases. It is a Windows Mobile application so I am using Sql Server Compact 3.5 with Visual Studio 2008 Beta 2. When I try and insert a new row into one of my tables, the app throws the error message shown in the title of this topic. '((System.Exception)($exception)).Message' threw an exception of type 'System.NotSupportedException'
My table has 4 columns (i have since changed my FavoriteAccount datatype from bit to Integer) http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k71/Scionwest/table.jpg
Account type will either be "Checking" or "Savings" when a new row is added, the user will select what they want from a combo box.
Next is a snap shot of my startup form. http://i85.photobucket.com/albums/k71/Scionwest/form.jpg
Where it says "Favorite Account: None" in the top panel, I am using a link label. When a user clicks "None" it will go to a account creation wizard, and set the first account as it's primary/favorite. As more accounts are added the user can select which will be his/her primary/favorite. For now I am just creating a sample account when the label is clicked in an attempt to get something working. Below is the code used.
account.FavoriteAccount = 1;//datatype is an integer, I have changed it since I took the screenshot.
financesDataSet.BankAccount.Rows.Add(account); //The next three lines where added while I was trying to get this to work. //I don't know if I really need them or not, I receive the error regardless if these are here or not.
catch (global:ystem.InvalidCastException e) { //Stops at the following line, this error was caused by 'if (this.financesDataSet.BankAccount[num].FavoriteAccount == 1)'
throw new global:ystem.Data.StrongTypingException("The value for column 'FavoriteAccount' in table 'BankAccount' is DBNull.", e);
I have no idea what I am doing wrong, all of the code I used I retreived from Microsofts help documentation included with VS2008. I have tried used my TableAdapter.Insert() method and it still failed when it got to
if (this.financesDataSet.BankAccount[num].FavoriteAccount == 1)
in my refreshDatabase() method it still failed.
When I look, the data has been added into the database, it's just when I try to retreive it now, it bails on me. Am I retreiving the information wrong?
I have a table which i use to queue messages in. in this table there is a status column along with all the other message colums (ID, body, phone, time, etc). I use tinyint to express the diffrent status values (my frist question is, should i continue using tinyint, or is there some sort of enum, or another suggestion?). the value 1 means its a new message. An external process polls this table and pics up messages that are new.
Some messages fail, and so their status is changed to two. An external post process comes along and does what it needs to with messages that have status' which it handles, for example message failures, it might erase it, or change its status back to 1.
I expect to handle thousands of messages per hour. Should I create another table, which has only id and status as columns. And when a message fails I will place it in here instead of placing it in my original table. then the post process only polls this table and joins with my main table. instead of having both processes poll the single table. Would this be more efficient for sql internal seraching? since it has a smaller table to search in? or does it not make a diffrence.
I need to handle system messages being put on my queue.
I have 2 ways of doing this, by message_type_id or by name.
As BOL only mentions names of message types I assume the only gauranteed method is the "by name" option. or can I guarantee the values of message_type_ids, the reason I thought the latter was possible was that Remus included ids in his recent performance blog post.
I've read already every thread in this forum regarding this topic with no results.
SQLServer and the corresponding services are at actual update level. The reporting services worked for 4 months without this problem. Suddenly, most of the time all reports return an internal error (it is like 70-30 for internal error) not depending which render format is used.
The system logs (eventlog, iis) show no errors. The ExecutionLog of RS show rsInternalError.
Looking in the log files in RS log directory, there is following stacktrace:
Hi Guys,I've been thinking about a normalised schema for a folksonomy syetem for my site. I'm fairly sure this is a good way to do things, but I have a coupld of questions... firstly, here's a quick low down on planned schema: Usersuser_idetc.Itemsitem_iditem_descetc.Tagstag_idtag_textItemTagstag_iduser_iditem_id Okay, now here's the thing. Obviously this is quite a normalised schema. I can retrieve all of an item's / user's tags easily. What I'd need to be able to do is return the list of tags and count for each item (perhaps just an item at a time).I can't really see any problems with this right now. But what happens if I have millions or Billions of rows. What's the proper way to retrieve tag counts for a huuuge set of data. I don't neceserrily need to implement something, but I'd quite like to know how one would get around the performance aspect of such a huge table. Ideas are welcomed greatly..Thanks.
I've written several survey systems in which the majority of the questionshave the same or similar responses (Yes/No, True/False, scale of 1 - 5,etc).But this latest survey system I'm working on has 8-10 sections, with avariety of question attributes and answer scales. Some items have just adescription and require a Yes/No answer, others have a description and anactive status and require a Yes/No and price answer, some require a comment, etc.Rather than build a separate response table for each survey section, I wasthinking of building one generic response table, and trying to force allsections to fit by adding columns - some of which won't apply to some items.Like this:Survey Category (will apply to all items)Survey Section (will apply to all items)Item Description (will apply to all items)Item YN (will apply to all items)Item Price (will apply to about 10% of the items)Item Points (will apply to about 10% of the items)Item Active YN (will apply to about 10% of the items)Item Fail YN (will apply to about 10% of the items)Item Comment (will apply to about 10% of the items)For instance, in the structure above the field "Item YN" would representmultiple types of answers: is the item in use?, is the item in place?, isthe item given away for free?, is the item on display?, etc. Basically, anywhere a Yes/No answer is used. The advantage is one source table (rather than 8) for storing answers, andit might be easier to query and report on.The disadvantages I see are 1) it's more difficult to understand the meaningof the responses when the answer field is named Item YN, and 2) you have anon-normalized table that's difficult for a 3rd party to understand. If I have the questions and responses in separate tables, I'll use nameslike "ItemComplimentaryYN" and "ItemUsedYN" depending on the question. It'seasier for others to learn the data.I actually don't like the "generic" approach, and probably won't use it, butI figured I'd try to get some input from others who've written surveysystems. Thanks
I am preparing to design an application that will archive files created by another application. In my SQL database I want to store details about the file and then the file its self. Each file is about 500kb in size and there will be about 20,000 files generated per year.
My preference is to store these files in a blob field. It makes storage, linking to file meta data, backup etc easy for me. I have already solved the technical issues surrounding pulling the file in and out of a blob field.
By my calculations I will need a server with 10GB of disk space for each year of files archived which doesn't seem outlandish for table size.
I do not want to design my application however to find out a year from now that I should have been storing these files in a traditional file system because of (... whatever ...) and just linking them by path in the sql database.
I'm curious what users of this forum believe to be the best practices surrounding this type of database?
i was deleting a row from my gridview.this fail ("System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Invalid object name 'MESSAGE'.") consists what must i do ?My SQL query is "UPDATE MESSAGESET DELETIONSTATUSTO = 1,_LASTMODIFYDATE =getdate() WHERE (_ID = @ID)"

A customer of my program is getting the SQL CE error message "The operating system does not support encryption".
I've seen several threads on this issue, but none of them seem to apply to my problem. This is a Windows Forms application, so no device and no web service.
The OS is a German Windows XP - so there shouldn't be any issues regarding strong encryption. It even runs in Windows 2000 in our test VPC.
My question takes two parts; firstly, is the new table that I'm proposing going to handle the business logic I describe below, and secondly, if I put the new table in, how in hell do I use it?
Right; present schema attached.
The idea, which I hope is fairly clear from the schema, is that you send it a buch of parameters about the event, admission date, etc, and it will return all tickets matching those parameters. An example stored proc for this is below:
CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[getSingleTicketsByParameters] @eventIdINT, @standIdINT, @admissionDateIdINT, @bookingDateIdINT, @concessionIdINT, @bookingMinQuantityIdINT, @bookingMaxQuantityIdINT, @membershipIdINT AS SET NOCOUNT ON SELECT [tblTickets].[id], [tblTickets].[booking_date_id], [tblTickets].[booking_min_quantity_id], [tblTickets].[booking_max_quantity_id], [tblTickets].[ticket_concession_id], [tblTickets].[membership_id], [tblTickets].[event_id], [tblTickets].[stand_id], [tblTickets].[admission_date_id], [tblTickets].[price], [tblTickets].[availability], [tblTickets].[description], [tblTickets].[admin_description], [tblTickets].[ticket_open], [tblTickets].[ticket_live], [tblEvents].[event_name], [tblEvents].[event_open], [tblStands].[stand_name], [tblStands].[stand_open], [tblBookingDates].[booking_start_date], [tblBookingDates].[booking_end_date], [tblTicketConcessions].[concession_name], [tblBookingMinQuantities].[booking_quantity], [tblBookingMaxQuantities].[booking_quantity], [tblAdmissionDates].[description], [tblAdmissionDates].[admission_start_date], [tblAdmissionDates].[admission_end_date], [tblAdmissionDates].[date_open], [tblMemberships].[membership_name] FROM [tblTickets] LEFT JOIN [tblEvents] ON [tblEvents].[id] = [tblTickets].[event_id] LEFT JOIN [tblStands] ON [tblStands].[id] = [tblTickets].[stand_id] LEFT JOIN [tblBookingDates] ON [tblBookingDates].[id] = [tblTickets].[booking_date_id] LEFT JOIN [tblTicketConcessions] ON [tblTicketConcessions].[id] = [tblTickets].[ticket_concession_id] LEFT JOIN [tblBookingQuantities] AS tblBookingMinQuantities ON [tblBookingMinQuantities].[id] = [tblTickets].[booking_min_quantity_id] LEFT JOIN [tblBookingQuantities] AS tblBookingMaxQuantities ON [tblBookingMaxQuantities].[id] = [tblTickets].[booking_max_quantity_id] LEFT JOIN [tblAdmissionDates] ON [tblAdmissionDates].[id] = [tblTickets].[admission_date_id] LEFT JOIN [tblMemberships] ON [tblMemberships].[id] = [tblTickets].[membership_id] WHERE 1=1 AND ([tblEvents].[id]=@eventId OR @eventId=0) AND ([tblStands].[id]=@standId OR @standId=0) AND ([tblTicketConcessions].[id]=@concessionId OR @concessionId=0) AND ([tblAdmissionDates].[id]=@admissionDateId OR @admissionDateId=0) AND ([tblBookingDates].[id]=@bookingDateId OR @bookingDateId=0) AND ([tblBookingMinQuantities].[id]=@bookingMinQuantityId OR @bookingMinQuantityId=0) AND ([tblBookingMaxQuantities].[id]=@bookingMaxQuantityId OR @bookingMaxQuantityId=0) AND ([tblMemberships].[id]=@membershipId OR @membershipId=0) GO
So. It's all about to get horribly, horribly complex (well, it is to me) so take a deep breath.
Tickets are subject to quotas. However, quotas are subject to... well, at the moment they can be based on event, stand, admission date, concession, or any combination of these. They can also be based on an individual ticket. All quotas, however, are annual; they only apply to ticket purchases in the same year. For example: - you can't buy more than 4 tickets for date A, in stand B at event C, per year. - you can't buy more than 2 tickets for stand D per year. - you can't buy more than 4 of ticket number 123.
Now, I'm thinking that all I need to manage this is one table, and it's going to look a little like this:
tblQuotas id INT PK ticket_id INT FK event_id INT FK stand_id INT FK admission_date_id INT FK quota INT
So, if I put a record in there with an event, stand and admission date - and a quota - then I've met the first business rule that I described above. If I put in a record with just a stand id and a quota, then I've met the second sort. If I put in one with just a ticket id and a quota, then I've met the third.
Now we return to that big SQL statement above. The one that says "get me all eligible tickets that match these parameters". And it's got to get a lot bigger because I now need to not only join in tblQuotas, to see if any quotas apply to the ticket I've chosen (or to the event, stand, etc that make it up), but I've also got to join in tblBasket, and tblOrders, and tblUsers, to find out how much of any particular quota they've already used up in previous orders. Although that's only orders placed in the current year, mind. And of course I also now haveto pass the users ID in as a parameter so I can look up their order history.
Your head's hurting too, right?
So... this is where I've got to:
SELECT SUM(ticket_quantity) FROM [tblBasket] INNER JOIN [tblTickets] ON [tblBasket].[ticket_id] = [tblTickets].[id] INNER JOIN [tblOrders] ON [tblBasket].[order_id] = [tblOrders].[id] WHERE [tblTickets].[stand_id] = @standId AND [tblOrders].[user_id] = @userId AND ([tblOrders].[order_date] BETWEEN '2006/01/01' AND '2006/12/31')
What I want to do is incorporate that into the big SQL query up top, in such a way to make it only return tickets that not only match the ticket parameters but that also aren't linked to stands, admission dates or anything else, that the user has reached their quota on.
Oh, and I'm in a bit of a hurry so do try and get a move on won't you? ;)
But seriously - how do I put those two SQL querys together? Do I need one for each paramater that might have a quota attached, or is there a quicker way? All suggestions and advice, up to and including "get an easier job, dude", received gratefully :)

Sorry, I don't have more info to give becuase this is all I have to work with since I cannot reproduce in our shop. If the exception object exposes a property for the HResult, I would be able to provide that.
I'm running W2K3 SP1. The MDAC Configuration Checker reports MDAC 2.8 SP2. The only discrepancy is MSADCO.DLL, where the expected version is 2.82.1830.0 and my actual version is 2.82.2651.0 (svr03_sp1_gdr.060301-1546).
The error message I'm getting when I use the ODBC Administrator dialog to set up a new entry is: "The setup routines for the SQL Server ODBC driver could not be found. Please reinstall the driver."
This is followed by a dialog titled: "Driver's ConfigDSN, ConfigDriver, or ConfigTranslator failed." The body text of the dialog is "Component not found in the registry."
I have looked all over my code and can not find anywhere that I am referencing the xp_sendmail procedure! Here is all the code<code>With sqlCmdUpdateParticipants .Parameters("@ClassID").Value = ddlClass.SelectedItem.Value .Parameters("@Person").Value = tbName.Text() End With cnCapMaster.Open() sqlCmdUpdateParticipants.ExecuteNonQuery() cnCapMaster.Close()</code>I am just getting a couple values and and inserting them into the database. the insert works then I get darn error message. I run SB between 2 SQL servers. In profiler on an initiator side I see next error: 'This message could not be delivered because its message timestamp has expired or is invalid'. For the conversation we use best practice, i.e. target closes a conversation. Target side succeed to close conversation, but initiator still stay in DO (disconnect_outbound). What is a reasone for the error? What to do?
