Moving Database To Another Computer
Dec 2, 2005
hi all,
I'm having real trouble trying to place another copy of my database on a different computer.
I have developed a database on my main PC. But I want another copy of this same database to reside on my laptop so that I can do work on the move.
So far no luck. I installed SQL Server on the laptop but it won't let me create a database based on an existing database file.
Any ideas guys?
cheers,

Dear all,
I face a problem about linking the SQL express database. Originally, I work with my desktop at home. However, I need to take it outside with my laptop. Once I copy whole project to my laptop and use Visual Studio 2008 again to develop. The following message appear when I run some pages that need to connect the database:
"An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file E:d drivedocAssignmentProgramming ProjectProgrammingSourceApp_DataASPNETDB.MDF failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share. "
How can I solve this problem? I think it is an absoultue address and logical address problem. Thanks a lot.
Regards,
Eric Chan

I am developing an SSIS package in a local computer. I have connection managers defined that link to a SQL Server database. I connect to the database using SQL Server Authentication, a username and a password. When I copy the package files and try to execute them in another computer, the password is lost and I have to edit the package and rewrite the password. How can I move a package between computers and not lose the password?

I will moving my SQL Server to another server. The plan is to stop SQL Server copy database file to a temp netwokr location, Switch off this server. Configure the new server with the same name and IP, install SQL to the same paths and service pack to the same level (SQL 2000 sp3). Then start and stop the SQL server. Once stop I will then copy the old database file over the new ones.
I know in general this works as I have doen this many times before expect this time round there is a replicaiton database which is new, I am expecting this will work the same but has any one else tried this before?

Hello all,
New forum member here, and pretty new to SQL Server. My question is I'm having an impossible time trying to connect MS Access on Computer A to a database running on SQL Server 2k (SP3) on Computer B. Every time I try to create a new ODBC connection on Computer A, I get the dreaded Server Error 17 (SQL Server does not exist or access denied). I have no problems making the ODBC connection on the computer running SQL Server (Computer B).
My connection settings are as follows:
Computer A name = MAINDESKTOP
Computer B name (contains SQL Server) = HOMELAPTOP
Workgroup name = WORKGROUP
Server Properties:
Name = HOMELAPTOP
Authentication = SQL Server and Windows
Registered SQL Server Properties = Use SQL Server authentication, and I'm using a login name and password
Server Network Utility = TCP/IP network protocol enabled, with default port 1433
Server Client Network Utility = TCP/IP network, default port 1433
Under "Security", I have created a new login using SQL Server Authentication called "bradley", and have assigned a password to the new login. I've noticed that when I open the login properties dialogue, there are always more ***'s in the password field than the number of characters I originally used, but I suspect that's normal. I have assigned a database called "Costume" to "bradley", and have verified that the permission is checked on the Database Access tab for user "bradley".
Under "DatabasesCostume", I have verified that there is a user called "bradley" with the same login name and user name.
No matter what I try, I can't get Computer A to connect to Computer B's SQL Server database. I have no problems with any other types of connections (pinging, internet, file transfers).
This can't be that difficult! Any ideas?
Thank you!
Brad

Hi All,
I recently was required to change the name of my machine, where SQL Server 2005 (Enterprise) was installed. I then tried to open a pre-change database, and SQL Configuration Manager gave me an error saying it "...could not obtain information about Windows NT/user..." Upon further digging, the Properties->Permissions of that particular database is tied to the old computer name. Eveything else seems to have updated to the new name, and I can't seem to figure out a way to change the old reference.
Help!

I am working with one other person on a VS 2005 vb.net web project that accesses SQL Server 2005. Both the computers are connected and my partner can run the application on his computer from his VS 2005 but we are getting an error on our first databind to a gridview on the page we are trying to run the error is below
A connection was successfully established with theserver, but then an error occurred during thepre-login handshake. When connecting to SQL Server2005, this failure may be caused by the fact thatunder the default settings SQL Server does not allowremote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 0 - No process is on the other end of the pipe.)
I check the properties of the SQL Server and the check box is checked that says allow remote access. I am not sure what to do.

I was altering a few columns (setting to allow nulls) on a large table (30+ million records) and the machine naturally crashed. I rebooted, and now I can't connect to the DB - enterprise manager hangs, and query analyzer times out. is it likely the whole DB is screwed up, assuming the table alteration was incomplete?
thankfully, I do have a backup, but for future reference, is there a preferred way to make changes to large tables? last time I did this it took over an hour, and enterprise manager gives no progress indication to make me feel more comfortable that it's actually doing something...

I have a client that has POS software called Restaurant Pro Express (RPE) from www.pcamerica.com
Their old POS computer had a hardware failure, but I was able to attach the hard-drive to another computer and recover the data. RPE uses a MSSQL database system. However, my client doesn't seem to make backups very often - the last one is dated January 5, 2015.
I was able to copy the C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server folder over which contained the instance as well as all the data files - and has up-to-date information. The instance in the recovered Microsoft SQL Server folder was called MSSQL.1. I installed the RPE software on their new computer, and it too now has an instance called MSSQL10_50.PCAMERICA. The new computer is using MSSQL 2008 R2, while I believe the old computer would have been using MSSQL 2005.

Hi all,
I'm new to .NET and VB2008 and trying to write my first database application. It runs fine on my development PC (Vista) but I decided to publish/install an early beta to my daughters XP computer and am getting an error reading: Unable to open database.
The CD drive on that pc has been giving us trouble so I deployed to a subdirectory on the dev pc and moved those files to a thumbdrive, copied to the same subdirectory on client pc and installed from there. I've installed it more than once, trying different paths for the installed version hoping that was the issue but have hit a wall. Can anybody help?
Thanks,
Dominic

All of the books I have about Visual Basic 2005 Database Programming, gives examples of connecting to a database on a localhost computer. But what about the connection to a database on a sql server 2005 on a computer wich can only be reached via the internet ? Is that possible without using ASP.NET ?
My problem:
I have a desktop with a sqlserver 2005 database . This desktop is connected with the internet . The IP address is a dynamic IP address.
On my laptop is a ADO.NET 2.0 program that needs to be connected with the database on my desktop.
What kind of address do I have to specify in my connectionstring in order to get connected to the database on my desktop , which can only be reached via the internet ?
I'm I wright to suppose that in the case of a static IP address, all I have to do is put the IP address in the connectionstring in order to get connected with my desktop via the internet? Are there some changings to be made in the settings of the SQL SERVER 2005 on my desktop ? What about the security ?
On the other hand , because the address of my desktop is a dynamic IP address, how do I solve this problem.?
I've heard about a program DynDns that can solve the problem of the dynamic address. Can i use this program together with my ADO.NET program to solve the problem , and how do I specify in this case the address to the database on my desktop in the connectionstring?
Is there someone who has experience with that program and the problem I described here ?
Thanks for the help !!!

I have a very basic console application whose sole purpose is to query a database on the same local computer. When i run the application, i get the error message below:
Cannot open user default database. Login failed.Login failed for user 'someDomainSomeUserName'.
Below is my connection string also
myconnection_string = New SqlConnection("Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=C:Reporting SystemApp_Datasafetydata.mdf;Integrated Security=True;Connect Timeout=30;User Instance=True").
After some googling, some post pointed to deleting a user folder at :
C:Documents and SettingsmyusernameLocal SettingsApplication DataMicrosoftMicrosoft SQL Server DataSQLEXPRESS
but still deleting that folder and restarting the machine doesn't help and i also have remote connections enabled. Help is really needed.
NOTE: The same application runs on a different computer with XP but fails on the Pc with windows server 2003.

Hi
I want to transfer a database from one PC to another. (Both running SQL Server 2005 express)
I have copied the files (SQL Server Database Primary Data File and SQL Server Database Transaction Log File) from the C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData folder of the source PC to the destination PC (Same folder).
I was under the impression that using Microsoft SQL Server 2005 - SQL Server Management Studio Express these files would be picked up and could be used, do I infact need to do something to attach the files/database so that they will appear in SQL Server management?

I have two computers, both with SQL Express 2005 and SQL Server Management Studio Express. I created a database on one computer, and need to copy it to the other computer. I'd like to do it all through the Management Studio interface, without using SQL commands, since I only need to do this manually.
I detached the two files, copied them to the second computer, and tried to attach them. This is generating lots of messages about not having the necessary permissions of various sorts. I think the main problem is that I don't know how to set up the database's users in a way that allows the second computer to attach the database.
I've tried Windows authentication, using a Windows user that has the same name and password on both computers, and I've defined that Windows user as a user within the database. I've connected to SQL when logged in as that user.
I've tried SQL authentication also, defining the same SQL user within both SQL Servers, as db_owner. But when I try to attach the database, I see no place to specify the user that I intend it to use, and it still fails. If I connect to SQL as that user, then SQL doesn't have permission to look at the file system to find the MDF file.
I'd appreciate the help in learning how to do this with both Windows authentication and SQL authentication, via the Management Studio's GUI. Most of the documentation I've seen covers how to do it by using SQL language commands, and I'd like to avoid that.
