Using MSDE And Moving Databases

Jul 23, 2005

Hi all,I am pretty new to dB programming and a have a few questions which I willput in separate threads. I have only coded as a hobby and some limited workprojects. I have recently been asked if I could help implement a simple helpdesk for work. This has only been running for a few weeks and the data iscurrently being stored in excel (I know...I know!! :-)I have installed a copy of MSDE on my development machine and plan on doingthe same on my office 'server'....in fact it may well already be on there. Ialso have another testbed to act as the client. My first question (in no particular order) is how to move the sql db fromthe development machine to the server? I don't have any sql/db tools otherthan anything that is included with MSDE (which I don't think is much).I will be posting other Q's for any experts out there! Thanks in advance.Phil

Moving Back To MSDE 2000 After Removing SQLServer 2005 Express

Sep 18, 2007

Apparently you cannot go backwards. Once 2005 Express is installed, even removing it does not allow you to setup MSDE 2000 again. So there is no "trying it out" option.

Unfortunately, our software does not use 2005 Express. I tried it out, and now have a useless testing workstation that can't have MSDE 2000 installed again.

Any ideas on how to break the chain here are welcome.

HELP MS Access Moving To SQL And Don't Know How

Moving From MS Access To SQL

Apr 20, 2007

Our Branch uses an Access Database, but we're thinking of rolling it out to our entire organization. I've just spent the day watching about 7 tutorials on SQL 2005, but they only use Management Studio Express in the tutorials, and before I go any further, I'd like to make sure I'm going down the right road.

Am I better using the Upsizing Wizard in Access to convert our DB to SQL? Once I've done that, what's the best way to get the rest of the DB on the Web so that our entire organization nationwide can use it? Do I need to learn Visual Studio or something so that I can recreate all our Forms & Reports? Do I even need to do that? Is there a conversion process?

Sorry for being so vague, but I would just like to know what is the best way forward. What do most people do when they want to move an Access DB to SQL and make it available outside of their LAN?

Thanks in advance for any advice anyoe can provide.

Moving Access 2002 Db To MS SQL

Nov 7, 2007

Hey guys,

I was just trying to get some information on how to move an Access 2002 db to MS SQL. Also, what all do I need to be able to access the db from the web. For instance, query the db for info from a website. I don't have that much experience in SQL but I quiet a few programming languages so i'm sure i'll learn it quick, I usually do. Right now I have a server set up with MS SQL server 2005 with all the other things required for testing over in my own little world. DNS, Active Dir., etc....

I'm trying to do this because a friend of a friend has a business(small businessish) who wants to be able to view reports from queries over the internet. And i'm sure I can do it but i told them to let me give it a test run to make sure I can before we commit.

Thanks in advance.

Moving From Access To SQL Server 2000

Sep 26, 2001

Hi there everyone, I have written a database system which tracks the performance of working in a shipping company in access. Im now rewriting the system in sqlserver and the only real problem I have found so far is that its difficult to estimate what kind of a server *cpu* & *ram* would be appropraite. The system currently performs transaction on my desktop machine in a second a quickest and 2 at slowest.
There are going to be about 500 users in 3 time zones so there will only really be about 300 max hitting the system in an hour.
I was looking at a Dell Poweredge server with twin P3's and half a Gb or ram would this be a good place to start from?

Any Advice would be great!!!

Moving From Access To A Web Based Approach

Aug 7, 2006

Hi all.

I am not a programer but managed to piece together an Access database that is the backbone of my company.

My IT group advised me to move to an SQL server back end and move to a web based front end.

My question. I am very comfortible with Access and modify the databases regularly. What front end is most like Access for modifying forms, reports, macros, etc.

Thanks!

Moving From Access To Sql, Frontend Question.

Feb 1, 2008

My company is currently using access to manage equipment in 4-5 different locations. I want to move this to a sql database and have a front-end to do the same thing access is doing now.

Should I use access as a front-end or should I develop a custom front end using vb?

Just a fyi
5-7 tables
7-9 queries
10 or so reports and the front end is currently a switchboard that links to many other forms.

I'm looking for advice.

Help Understand Logic Of Moving From Access To SQL

Apr 14, 2006

Hi all,
Please, I need some help understanding what I need to do.
I'm working with text files and they're too much for Access to handle.
The logical conclusion is to use something more robust like SQL.
I'm having trouble understanding how it would all fit together, and I'm looking for guidance.

First of all, what do you think is a logical approach to this problem: I get 6 .txt files delivered to our webserver via ftp. Every night there's an update, so they overwrite. I need to be able to display that data on the web page and I thought I could use Access to do it. Well, it won't work, so then there's SQL.

In my reading today, I find out that SQL isn't an environment like Access, it's a language. I'm assuming that means I can't just import all of this data into an SQL db, get it on the webserver, and then start running queries against it like I can in Access, right?

If one of you more experienced users has any ideas, please share. How can I use SQL to search the data in these .txt files? Included with each text file is a .dic file containing field names, data types, and length. What is the best approach. Step by step would be wonderful as I am very new to this. I have only ever worked with SQL queries and Access db.

Thank you for any help you can offer.
Carrie

Moving From Access To SQL Server 2005

Jul 17, 2006

Hi All,

I'm new to SQL server. Basically, I am trying to make my Access database accessible on line to my users, so I am transfering it into SQL Server and then writing a web site to use the connection to the database.

My questions are as follows:

1) How can I easily move the structure of the tables (relationships too, but content is not important) from Access into SQL?

2) I have the following query in Access which I don't believe will work in SQL because of the Sum funtion... How can I change this to work in SQL?:

SELECT DISTINCTROW Player.TeamID, Player.PlayerID, Player.SFD, Sum(Payments.Amount) AS Payment, [SFD]-[Payment] AS Due
FROM Player INNER JOIN Payments ON Player.PlayerID = Payments.PlayerID
GROUP BY Player.TeamID, Player.PlayerID, Player.SFD;

All help will be greatfully received... thanks

Access To MSDE Database

HiI am just starting my first .NET project using the web matrix and an MSDE database.  I am pretty much at the limit of my knowledge - all very interesting.  I have some data in an Access spreadsheet (6 columns and 365 rows) which in the past I have copied and pasted into an Access database table.  How do I get it into a MSDE database table?  This process does not need to be automated/programmed as I will only have to do it once a year.  Any ideas on the easiest way forward would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.Mike

MSDE Can't Access My Database

Jul 22, 2004

Hi all

I have MSDE installed on my machine to support off-line use of a web application.

The database (MDF) file in question is stored on an encrypted area of my hard drive, which must be unlocked each time the machine starts up by the user entering a password.

Unfortunately, by this time the SQL Server service has already started, and although it still lists the database along with master, etc, it cannot access it. I believe the error mentions that some files are unavailable.

Stopping and restarting SQL Server using Service Manager fixes this problem. However, this can only be done when logged in as Administrator. I need to find a solution for normal users without Admin privileges.

Is there any other way of making the now-unlocked MDF file available to SQL Server? I thought about using SQLDMO to Refresh databases, but no joy.

This is a real show stopper for my application, which I've spent three years developing! It goes without saying that I'm writing this message with a long face. If anybody has any suggestions I would be very happy to hear from you!

Best wishes
Rob

Can't Import Access DB Into MSDE

Jul 20, 2005

I want to move my Access 2K database into MSDE. The Access UpsizingWizard crashes (a known bug wi A2K), so I'm using the followingsuggested method:Access --> New --> Project (Existing Database)This asks for the name of the .adp file to create and then launchesinto the Data Link Properties dialog box (so far so good) I select myMSDE server from the drop-down, enter the sa account & passwd, attacha database file and try to select the .adp file that was just created.Unfortunately, the "Select SQL Server Database File" dialog is lookingfor an .MDF file, not an .ADP file.If I try to kludge it and select the .adp file anyway, the TestConnection produces an error:"Test connection failed because of an error in initializingprovider. The header file "D: est.adp" is not a valid database fileheader. The FILE SIZE property is incorrect."Any suggestions on how to proceed?Note:I've got Access 2000 SP1, Visual Studio.Net 2002, MSDE and SQL WebAdministrator running on XP Prof SP2.

Access/MSDE/SQL Internet Licenese?

I was recently told that every internet user would have to have a license to use a site that had Access as the database. I'm really not sure how true that is or if its MS support fobbing me off. Choosing Database Between MSDE And Access

Oct 13, 2004

hi,

I need to choose a database based on the following criteria (using .NET app):
1) a light but fully functional database, preferably with the support of store proc and constraints, less than 8000 transaction a day.
2) portable or the database can be export/import very easily
3) reliable and stable
4) least maintenance

I have two db in my mind, Access and MSDE?
Does anyone have some hand-ons experience on the above two? Or any other better suggestions?

Any advice is appreciated.

MSDE Running Much Slower Than Access DB??

Feb 19, 2004

I have a large VB 6.0 application running with Jet 4.0 Access DB. I am considering moving the DB to MSDE. For testing, I installed MSDE on another computer in a peer to peer network running XP sp1, loaded up the DB from Access to MSDE2000A -- all without problem. (I should add the obvious fact I am new to using SQL server.)

What I find is that with a relatively small test DB, running just a single instance of the application, query response from MSDE is taking several seconds (4-5 second lag) longer than response from the Access DB, which runs extremely fast. This is with the Access DB installed on the same network drive, running the same application and the same queries syntax -- only changing configuration of connection for each (SQL vs Jet 4).

Any clues as to what may be going on? The lag time is unacceptable. I am using SQL password instead of NT security. It seems the process is perhaps lagging in the process of authorization.

Thanks for any suggestions or ideas on this.
