Msdb Restore On New Server

Aug 9, 2007

Hello all!

First of all our servers:

SQL_PROD: production server with SQL Server 2005
SQL_TEST: test server with SQL Server 2005
What we are trying to do:

We are testing our backup and recovery procedures.
To do so we are using the backups from SQL_PROD and restoring them on SQL_TEST.
We are restoring: all user databases, master database, msdb database and model database.
The issue we are experiencing:

I think we've hit a kink in our recovery procedures concerning msdb database in the context of a recovery on another machine (SQL_TEST in this case).

We include msdb in our nightly backups so that, in the event of server loss, our maintenance plans and jobs get restored.

On SQL_TEST (after a recovery), the maintenance plans and jobs do get restored but the problem is that they reference the SQL_PROD server (server's name, disks, etc...).
Deleting the jobs and maintenance plans from SQL_TEST we got no errors and the jobs and plans disappeared from beneath the Maintenance Plans and Jobs nodes. Doing a refresh on the nodes, the €œdeleted€? plans and jobs reappear beneath their respective nodes! Upon the second deletion (and any consecutive delete) we get the error:

Failed to retrieve data for this request. (Microsoft.SqlServer.SmoEnum)
...
The SELECT permission was denied on the object 'sysmaintplan_plans', database 'msdb', schema 'dbo'. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 229)

Clicking on "Show technical details" reveals this:

...
Server Name: SQL_PROD
Error Number: 229
Severity: 14
State: 5
Line Number: 1
...

Note that SQL_PROD is being referenced in the error message!

This morning I took a look at SQL_PROD€™s Maintenance Plans and Jobs (the source of the msdb backup) and surprise surprise: THEY WERE ALL GONE!!! This is a MAJOR BUG!!! Deleting a job or a plan on one server should not have the effect of deleting it from a different server (regardless of the origins of the msdb database). Is this a known bug? Or is it considered €œnormal€? behavior?

My questions are:

How do we delete the maintenance plans and jobs from SQL_TEST without deleting them from SQL_PROD?
What is the proper/recommended method to backup and restore maintenance plans and jobs (in fact msdb)? Is it by scripting things and recreating them on the recovery server in an empty msdb or is there a way to restore msdb properly from the crashed server?
Thanks for your help.

Mark Tabash

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Restore Database Without Backup History In MSDB

Jul 23, 2014

What is the best way to restore a database from a folder of backups (including full, diff and log backups) without using the backup history in msdb?

I have a restore process that restores all backups on a regular schedule in order to fully verify their integrity. To do this, I use the backup history in msdb on each server that I'm monitoring. I had a thought the other day that I would be in trouble if I lost msdb. Then my backup history would only be as good as the last backup of msdb.

What I'd like to do is read a folder of backup files and generate a restore script up to a specified time. Would I use RESTORE HEADERONLY to do this? If so, would I use PowerShell to traverse each file in the folder?

Can Belatedly Restore MSDB And MODEL DBs

Dec 3, 2015

Late last Sunday I had to do an emergency rebuild of our SQL Server (v2012). In my haste, I neglected to restore the MSDB and MODEL DBs, and am instead using those which came with the fresh SQL install -- which obviously don't contain my jobs and maintenance plans. Would there be any problem/conflicts with me restoring those DBs this weekend?

Msdb.dbo.sp_delete_backup_history Causes DEADLOCKS With Log-Shipping Restore Jobs

Jan 28, 2008

Hi,

I have a weekly job that runs to execute msdb.dbo.sp_delete_backup_history on history older than 7 days on a server that is a log-shipping destination server. However, I have now noticed after putting a new deadlock alert, that this job causes RESTORE LOG jobs for all 6 of my log-shipped databases, which run every minute, to deadlock.

I am not concerned with the fact that the RESTORE LOG jobs are then chosen as the deadlock victims, as they will simply re-run in the next minute anyways.

What I would like to do though is to somehow lock all the tables being cleared by sp_delete_backup_history, so that the restore jobs are forced to wait or fail without causing a deadlock to appear. I was wondering if I could do this via setting the job which runs sp_delete_backup_history to use serializable isolation level, or would that cause other problems/issues? If not that, would setting the deadlock priority level to high prevent deadlocks, or just simply force the restore log jobs to be chosen as the victim?

The main thing is that I would like to stop being "annoyed" by the deadlock messages being generated.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Regards,
Diane.

Restoring Master And MSDB To A New Server

Nov 10, 2005

I have a server attached to a SAN, all user db's are on the SAN, master, tempdb, and msdb are on the local machine. We will be replacing the machine (not the SAN) to a newer sql server. Our plan was to create the new server with same name, deattach current user db's,backup master and msdb, then connect new server with same name an IP to SAN. I then wanted to restore the master and msdb db's to the new machine, and attach the user db's. We are running log shipping to a stand-by server in this configuration. I was thinking I could let last tran log backup and copy occur, and then let the last restore happen on the standby. I would then shut down the agent. Should I not be able to restore the MSDB and master to the new server (as long as all file folder locations are the same) and be ready to go? Or are there issues when restoring the Master and MSDB to a new server from a different server.

Repairing Corrupt MSDB File In SQL Server 2000.

Jun 13, 2001

Hi,

I am having problems with my SQL server Agent.

1) When I try to create a New Job/Alert/Operator, I get an error message:

Error 207: Invalid Column Name "category_id"
Invalid Column Name "netsend_address"
Invalid Column Name "last_netsend_date"
Invalid Column Name "last_netsend_time"

.....All these are referring to columns in System Tables of the system Database MSDB.

2)In another SQL Server...say "A", in it's SQL Server Agent, using the Multi-Server Administration, I set up the SQL Server Agent of "A" as the Master (MSX) server, and set up a Target(TSX) server pointing to the Server "B" that has problems in SQL Agent....referred in 1) above. When I try to "Detach the MSX Server" from server B, i get a message Error 207: Invalid Column Name "netsend_address", and cannot detach..........This is again referrring to a System Table.

It appears that the problem is with the MSDB database being corrupt. Is there a way I can Repair a Corrupt MSDB without Re-installing SQL Server 2000 and without a Backup.

Any help greatly appreciate.

Thanks

SQL 2012 :: Refreshing MSDB SSIS Packages From One Server To Another

I was recently tasked with creating an automated process to refresh SSIS packages from MSDB on one server to another and I decided to go the route of using Powershell, however this wasn't as straight forward as I originally imagined so I thought I would share my solution in case others encounter the same request. The below PowerShell code will create all Integration Services folders from the source MSDB (that contain SSIS packages) on the target instance of MSDB then copy all packages to the proper folder locations. The /QUIET option is used to automatically overwrite packages that already exist on the target so make sure you want to overwrite the current versions of your packages before executing.

Executing Packages On SQL Server MSDB From Visual Studio Project

Jan 5, 2007

I created several packages (MyProjectPart1 - MyProjectPart9) which I execute on the server directly(right-click package in integration services and execute). These packages alI deployed the server with logging and configuration files. Before deploying I edited the configuration file (changed all dependent file names and sql server name from default on my workstation to those unique to the server I'm deploying it to) and then ran the manifest file which pushed it onto the server. I then ran the packages from the server an it ran beautifully. I then tried to build a package which executes all the packages in the correct order (by adding 9 execute package tasks). The dependen files are on the E: emp folder on the server.

I have included the error messg...but it looks like it's looking for dependent drives on the C drive on my workstation. I don't get this? How do I supply configuration files? Why is it executing differently when I call it from package execute task and when I execute it on SQL Server

Transact SQL :: Backup / Restore Tools Which Can Restore Multiple Environments

Jun 25, 2015

I am looking for a SQL Backup/Restore tools which can restore multiple environments. Here is high level requirements.

1. We have 4 DBs, range from 1 TB - 1.5 TB Each Database. When we restore to QA, DEV, or Staging, we usually restore 4 of them.
2. I am looking for the speed to complete restoring between 1 - 2 hours for 4 DBs.

I am evaluating the Dephix Software but the setup is very complex and its given us a lot of issues with Windows Authentions, and failure in the middle of the backup. I used Guess Software many years ago but can't find it on the web site any more. Speed is very important for us mean complete restoring as fast as possible. We are on SQL 2012 and SQL 2008 R2.We are currently using NETAPP Technology and I have Redgate Backup Tool but I am mainly looking for fast Restore Process.

Auto Restore .bak From Production To Same Server's TEST Db With Other Dbs && .baks In Same Server.

Aug 10, 2007

Howdy;
I've tried this in the 'tools' area, but that didn't work too well. I suspect, I will have to generate a T-SQL code then schedule it as a job. Why I can't just drag and drop with basic desires, is beyond me, but THAT probably does exist.

anyway here is the problem
[this server has many databases, on SQL 2000 sp2]
1. User only wants me to use Monday morning's full backup, which is good in that it doesn't include transaction logs.
2. Restore that data overtop/into Developement db. = good, no data to worry about damaging.
3. User does NOT want me to do this by hand, but schedule it.

ok,
a. must do a RESTORE WITH FILELISTONLY from [?] what ?, master? and if I user the *.bak of the production, it has
a coded date field in the name entry SO, I would, I guess, have to generate all sorts of wonderful code to find the date and build a file name. Why, because using the FROM DISK = 'F:MSSQLBACKUPDBPRODUCTION_yyyyddmm.BAK' is not going to work with a wild card.
Can I do a file lookup using a 'PRODUCTION' prefix into a variable, then use that or should I look for latest file date [remember there are several database backups here], or ????

then. How does one schedule such a T-SQL. Do I save it to some text file, and invoke it using a job scheduler.

any help appreciated.

IS there an easier way.
