Mssql2k Sqloledb.1 (re)connection Failure

Sep 7, 2007

Hey all, 2 questions.

Is there a way to 'refresh' the value of adodb.connection.state? and When my ado class reconnects after a dropped connection i still get connection failure errors.

I'm trying to make the connection b/n the my work's app and mssql server more 'robust'.

Our ado class tests the connection in the 'execute' method ie if connect() execute db task

.connect() is

IF this.loConnection.State = adStateOpen
*-- The connection is already open.
ELSE
create connection
ENDIF

return (this.loConnection.State = adStateOpen)

Now, this works fine when starting up the app, and everything runs fine, but *in theory* it should be able re-establish the connection at any time. So i kill the connection @ on the sql server while the app is running and try to perform a task that requires a db connection.

problem is that 'this.loConnection.State' is still equal to 1 even though the connection is no longer there.

It gets changed to 0 when the .execute fails but the failure is less than graceful... and although it reconnects (sp_who shows a new connection), it seems like the ado object is trying to connect using the old connection rather than the new one. command.activeconnection is set to the new connection in the .connect method so i dunno what's up.

Any ideas?

MSSQL2k Replication To Oracle

May 29, 2002

I currently have replication setup from a MSSQL2k machine to Oracle 8.1.5 and while the replication works, it times out every time there is a hiccup in the network. It acts as if it won't retry like it does from MSSQL2k to MSSQL2k. I'm using Microsoft ODBC for Oracle for my connection. Any ideas?

Restoration Time Reqd In Mssql2k

Apr 7, 2004

Q--Is there any feature of sqlserver-2000 by which we can restore the database with minimum time by using the parallel processor?
if the answer is yes wht is the statistics with example

For example

Time reqd for restoring 20GB of database 25minutes.

with configuration of Xeon processor,1GB memory and no users are using the server.

Basic purpose of my question is i need to give a solution to the client by using which he will be able to restore 20GB of data in 1 minutes .Is there any 3rd party utility which is available in market or can we achive this in mssqlserver2000, itself by increasing the resources like memory, cpu etc.

Converting Queries From Access2k To MsSql2k

Jul 23, 2005

Hi,I'm converting an Access 2000 database to Sql Server and must bemissing something obvious.Using the Import utility in Sql Server, the Access queries seem to getexecuted and the resultant data imported as tables. Oops!Using the Upsize lizard in Access 2003, the queries aren't even in theselection list of "tables" to upsize. It looks like the Upsize wizardisn't supposed to do queries. How does one automate the migration of standard conforming queries toSql Server?Of course, I expect to spend some time addressing the stickiernon-compliant queries, but there must be a way to do the easy ones. What am I missing?-Dave

Mysterious Loss Of Data From Mssql2k

Jul 23, 2005

Hi All,I'm trying to track down a mysterious problem we're experiencing inwhich updates and inserts to tables in our mssql2k server appear to be'disappearing.'To explain our situation:We have a web page (written in ASP, if that's relevant) on which weaccept enrollment information. When that page is submitted, the form data is passed to a storedprocedure on our mssql2k server, which performs several operations, all of which are wrapped in a transaction. In particular, the stored procedure performs an update operation on arecord in one table (i'll call it TableA) and an insert into anothertable (TableB).If the procedure encounters a problem (ie after each update / insertoperation in the procedure we test for IF @@Error<>0) it performs arollback, performs a select similar to the one immediately below, andthen RETURNs.SELECT '1' as error, 'Unable to update TableA' as errormsgIf the procedure doesn't fail any of the @@Error tests, thetransaction is committed, and a membership number is SELECTed to bereturned.SELECT '0' as error, @memnum as membershipnumberThe @memnum variable is populated within the transaction.Back in the ASP page we test both for the proc returning an emptyrecordset, or for it passing an explicit value in the error field, andpush the page to an error page if either of these conditions are met.If, on the other hand, none of these conditions are met, and themembershipnumber field in the recordset is populated with a validmembership number, we push to a confirmation page. This confirmation page receives the membership number in a sessionvariable, performs a SELECT against TableB (the table that receivedthe insert during the proc) using that membership number in the WHEREclause, and the resultant recordset is used to populate theconfirmation details on that page. That recordset is also then used topopulate the details of a confirmation email, which is automaticallysent by the confirmation page. And now here's our problem: we've become aware of a handfull of peoplewho have gone through the enrollment process, have received theconfirmation email containing the information they supplied asexpected, but the data appears to be entirely missing from our tables.By that I mean that the record in TableA does not appear to have beenupdated (under normal circumstances that record should have hadseveral flags set, and several other fields updated with informationsupplied by the person enrolling), and the record in TableB does notappear to have been inserted. In essence, looking at our tables, it *feels* like the transaction inthe stored procedure for that particular enrollment hit a problem andwas rolled back. However, the evidence that we have in the form of theconfirmation email argues strongly that the data must have existed inour tables (particularly in TableB), if only for an unknown period oftime. We're kind of at our wit's end to work out what is going wrong withthese enrollments. From my understanding of transactions (and I couldwell be wrong) any changes to data (ie updates, inserts etc) containedwithin are essentially 'invisible' to any other operation (ie theSELECT that happens in the confirmation page) until the transaction iscommitted, implying that the effect of the update and insert shouldhave been 'permanently' successful if no error code is received and ifa valid membership number was returned. I ask, because someone in ourteam has suggested that maybe the operations in the transaction'lasted long enough' in the tables to have been visible for the SELECTon the confirmation page to have worked, but were then subsequentlyrolled back, explaining why the confirmation email is appropriatelypopulated and why the data then appears to be missing. However, as Isaid, this doesn't match my understanding of how transactions behave.Sorry for the length of this post, but I felt it was best to explainthis as best as I could.Does anyone have any advice they can give us on this situation? ie,are there any known problems with operations in transactions 'bleedingover' into tables, but then being rolled back at some later point?Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions on how we can furtherdiagnose this issue?Truly, any help will be immensely appreciated...Thanks in advance,M Wells

Stored Proc/WHERE Clause Issue In MSSQL2k

Nov 26, 2004

Hey there everyone, hopefully someone can shed some light on this problem.

Here is the stored procedure:

CREATE Procedure sp_getRequestorwCredentials

@LoginID varchar(50)

AS

SELECT Users.Name as name, Users.Email as email, Users.Manager as manager, Users.Mgremail as mgremail, Users.Empid as empid, Users.Phone as phone, Users.Dept as dept, Users.Busunit as busunit, Users.Segment as segment, Users.EmpPosition as position, Users.Region as region,

Requests.RequestDate, Users.EmpPosition, Users.Reason as reason, Users.District as district, Users.NetId, Users.Status as status

FROM Users INNER JOIN

Requests ON Users.Empid = Requests.UserId

WHERE (Users.NetId like RTRIM(@LoginID))

ORDER BY Requests.RequestDate DESC

return

GO

Now this query will work fine when using the like operator however if a user with a similar name to another user already in the table then the user may get the other persons record instead of thier own. Of course the solution here is to use the = operator instead of LIKE. This works fine when querying the DB directly however when executed within the stored proc no records are returned using the = operator even if they exact same query text works fine in a query window with a hardcoded var.

Yes I know there are SQL injection issues but the LoginID is being grabbed from the users domain login DOMAINNAME and is grabbed from the authenciation module. Since Active Directory names have a limited char set and theres not a way to pass an invalid name with text that allows for an injection attack.

More On Mysterious Data Loss In Mssql2k - A Possible Solution?

Jul 23, 2005

Hi All,Further to my previous long-winded question about a situation in whichwe appear to be mysteriously losing data from our mssql2k server. We discovered an update statement, in the stored procedure we believeis at fault, after which no error check was being performed.Under certain conditions, this update is fired against the same recordin the same table as the immediately preceding update statement withinthe transaction. We are now suspecting that under some circumstances, these two updates get into a locking conflict that is eventuallyforcing the transaction to be rolled back. However, I'm still left with three questions.1) Where an update in a transaction gets locked, and an error isn'ttested immediately afterwards (ie no 'IF @@Error<>0' test is made),would the transaction proceed as normal?2) Most critically, would statements in the stored procedure thatappear after the COMMIT TRAN statement also be executed, even if anunresolved lock existed within the transaction?3) Assuming that (2) does happen, would a SELECT made on anotherconnection with a 'WITH(NOLOCK)' locking hint be able to see thechanges made in the locked transaction even if the server is set toREAD COMMITTED, and the SELECT takes place some time after the COMMITTRAN is issued? More to the point, given (2), how long would thelocked transaction survive before being rolled back after the COMMITTRAN has been issued? Is it possible that the COMMIT TRAN takes place, the transaction is flagged for potential rollback while a lockresolution is attempted, the stored procedure exists as thougheverything was fine, a subsequent SELECT (ie performed as one of thenext operations in the same application) using WITH(NOLOCK) 'sees' thechanges made by the transaction, reinforcing the impression that thetransaction succeeded, and then at some point thereafter the lock isdetermined to be unresolvable and the transaction is rolled back, making it seem as though the data disappeared, even though it had beenSELECTable via a different connection to the server? Thanks, by the way, to Simon and Erland for your advice on my previousquestions about this problem.Much warmth,M Wells

Offisite DB Connection Failure

Dec 18, 2006

I am trying to write a simple program for test purpose with VB .Net 2005 and SQL Server Express 2005. My server is not even in the same state as me, but I have the following on the server:

Server 2003 Web Edition SP1
SQL Server Express 2005

I am writing in the following:
Visual Basic 2005 Pro Edition

I have read where you can setup Express to allow TCP/IP connection, and I have done what it stated HERE (http://www.datamasker.com/SSE2005_NetworkCfg.htm). However, I am still not able to connect to the DB on the remote server.

I go to:
Tools --> Connect to Server --> Type IP and get the connection failed to connec to server "xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx"
I even tried:
Tools --> Connect to Server --> Type IPSQLEXPRESS and get the connection failed to connec to server "xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx"

Has anyone been able to do this, or am I wasting my time? If I can get the SQL Server to do as requested then I am going to purchase and work with it, however, I want to test out before I spend the $$$$$ to begin the full project. If anyone can be of assistance here I would appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

Hello there!

This is my issue: I do have a database which back end is in SQL Server 2005 and front end is in ACCESS 2003. When one of the forms is trying to write duplicate information in any of the tables, there is a message coming "ODBC -- call failure", I wrote code trying to avoid that situation, but is keeps on coming. Does anybody have any idea about how to handle this exception? I would really appreciate a help on this subject.

Thanks;

ODBC Connection Failure

Mar 15, 2007

My application (written in a proprietary old 4GL) is connecting to a SQL 2000 database via ODBC

This works fine nearly all the time, but occasionally, it throws the following error when trying to connect :

Connection Failed

SQLState '01000'

SQL Server Error: 10060

[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]Connection Open(Connect()).

Connection Failed:

SQLState '08001'

SQL Server Error: 17

[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]SQL Server does not exist or access denied.

This error is displayed in a Windows dialog box. When the OK button on this dialog is clicked, it throws up a login/password box. When this is filled in and submitted, the connection is usually made cleanly and the application continues.

The big problem is that the application is an unattended service, and this dialog can go unnoticed for quite a while.

If these dialogs are 'Cancelled' rather than 'OK'd, the 4GL receives the error and arranges to re-try the connection itself.

Is ODBC responsible for popping up the interactive dialog, and, if so, can I do anything to force it to return an error instead ?

I just installed VS2005 and can't connect to my SQL2000 server. It is there. I can't connect using either one of the mix mode authentication.

I can login to SQL from another pc when logged in with this user name. It has to be something on this pc blocking it.

Iam not rying to do this from a ASP web page just trying to setup a ODBC driver and I get these errors.

I get the error:" Login failed for user (null)" Not associated with a trusted connection

Connection Failure - Data Corruption?

Jan 18, 2006

Hi,

Yesterday, one of the computers on the network of our SQL server experienced a connection failure while using two specific jobs in a table containing assignments for jobs. The data interaction occurs from a Data Access Page, and from what I've learned, the nature of a DAP is such that the client not only connects to the web server but actually also establishes a direct connection to the SQL Server (we use a backend of MS SQL Server 2003). The data is still inside the tables, but on the Data Access Page, any data that was opened during the connection failure does not show up anymore from any computer.

My guess is that there was corruption of some sort on another layer beneath the actual data layer that cannot be accessed directly or viewed. To remedy this problem, I am going to try to recreate all affected records and rebuild all table ID ties manually with append and update queries. Does anyone know the actual problem or corruption that occurs during a connection failure? Is there a way to access the affected layer(s) and undo the corruption or remedy the affect so the records can be used? Is the problem with the SQL Data itself or on a layer with MS Access/MS DAP?

This data is very important and needs to be used today and was supposed to be used yesterday. If anyone could help me in this matter or provide a better way to undo the supposed corruption, it would be greatly appreciated :)!

thanks in advance,
mellamokb

PS - I don't know if this makes a difference, but other data has been changed in the same database/tables since the connection failure, so a complete reversion back to the system at that point in time would mean loss of other updated data.

Aliases And Remote Connection Failure

Nov 14, 2007

Just stumbled over the interesting bug -
if you have an SQLExpress server and the "allow remote connection" in SQL Instance is turned ON, it doesn't means that it works if you create some aliases for this instance

If Im trying to connect to SQLExpress via new created alias ('localhost' for example) I got the "SQL Server does not allow remote connections" error. Albeit, connecting to ".SQLExpress" is successful.
I've checked the properties of locahost DB instance in SQL Management Studio - remote connection is allowed.
I've restarted the SQLExpress instance.
There is no SQLServer or other instances on my PC

But it doesn't work

How to fix this and allows to connect to sql instance via aliases?

Adding Transaction Causes Connection Failure?

May 14, 2007

I have some tables that I need to wipeout and reload once per day. So I have created a T-SQL task that does a truncate table, then a data flow task, then a update statistics task. Running those works fine, but as soon as I put them all into a sequence container and set the container to require transactions, the first step gets a connection failure. "Failed to acquire connection "<name>". Connection may not be configured correctly or you may not have the right permissions on this connection". I am using a .Net SQLClient data provider for the T-SQL task and in the data flow task I have to use a OLEDB provider so that I can run the task locally in development.

Is there something I am doing wrong or is there some other way to handle truncate, load, update stats all in a transaction?

Thanks.

Remote Connection Failure -- Error 26

Nov 19, 2007

Overview. I am converting over from MSDE to SQL Express. My front end program is unable to connect to the database. To troubleshoot, from the remote computer I tried connecting with the management program and I get the Error 26 unable to connect.

(The connection string worked previously (yesterday) when using MSDE as the server. When I installed SQL Express I named it the same instance as the server name under MSDE. I also use server authtication on both with same user name and password. As stated below I cannot connect using the managment console.)

Here is what I have done: I made sure that the SQL Server configuration has been changed to allow network connections (both TCP and named pipes). I have disable windows firewall on both machines. I confirmed that I can connect from the remote machined to the server by network browsing. Both machines are running XP Proff. There is no other security software running on either machine.

More Info. when attempting to log on I am using the server authntication, I use "sa" as the user id plus my password.

Goal. The front end of database program connects to the server remotely using a program called Hamachi over the internet. This works without a problem on MSDE. But for now I am simply try to connect using the managment program which lets you browse for other serves. When I do this it shows the remote computer, but not the name of the computer but not the SQL server which I type in like the following: "INTELsql1"

What I have not Done: I have not changed any permissions or added any users to the server, since this does not seem necessary. As stated the user of remote machine can connect to the server and change files.

Would appreciate any suggestions or tips. Thanks.
I HAVE READ THE POST FROM MAY 13, 2007 AND TAKEN ALL STEPS SUGGESTED EXCEPT MAKING SURE THE BROWSERS SERVICE IS RUNNING ON SERVER WHICH I WILL DO NOW.

Connection Failure To SQL When Database Updated

Jan 23, 2008

Hi,

I have very little, to zero, IT configuration knowledge and I am hoping that someone is able to help me out.

I am currently writing the SQL scripts and developing the reports in the SQL Server Business Intelligence Development Studio, and then deploying the reports to the server for managers to eventually view.

Recently the IT section updated the test database (temp) that is connected to SQL Server 2005, with the live database (production), so that the data and database structure were up to date for me to create the reports.

When the update was done, the connection to SQL Server failed, and the newly appointed IT person responsible for SQL does not know how to resolve the problem. Up until yesterday I was getting a message that said that the connection has failed and then today I have the following message (she has been trying very hard to get it working):

An error occurred during local report processing.
An error has occurred during report processing.
Query execution failed for dataset 'Division'.
The SELECT permission was denied on the object 'Dim1', database 'payglobal', schema 'dbo'.

The reports that were deployed to the server prior to the update are still accessible however I am unable to review any reports I edit within the Development Studio. It has been out of action now for nearly two weeks.

Could someone please give me very detailed instructions on where the IT person should look, and what she should do to fix the problem. I will then pass these onto her.

Thanks.

SQL Server 2005 Remote Connection Failure

Jun 7, 2007

I'm having a big problem with a SQL 2K5 cluster (using standard edition). I can get onto the box and connect to the sql server locally fine. However when I try to connect remotely I get errors.

Let's call the two sides of the cluster, CL1 and CL2 and the "virtual server" is CL3. Locally I can connect without any problem at all to the SQL server, but I just can't connect to it from any remote machine.

The server in question is instance name LMS_PRD running on CL3, port 10051. TCP/IP is definitely enabled for local and remote connections (I have checked this in the SQL server surface area configuration). I can connect locally without any problem. Also, locally, if I do,

telnet CL3 10051

it connects fine

From a SQL 2000 box - when I try to connect from sql query analyzer, I get

"Unable to connect to server LMS_PRD Server Msg 17 ... SQL server does not exist or access denied"

Client network utility shows server alias - LMS_PRD, TCP/IP, CL3LMS_PRD,10051

[I can connect to other SQL 2005 servers OK from this same server using this same method]

On this box, when I do telnet CL3 10051 , I get "Connecting to CL3...Could not open a connection to host on port 10051 : Connect failed"

[When I do a similar one for another SQL 2005 box, "telnet U01 10051", it connects fine]

From another SQL 2005 box - when I try to register the server, I get

"An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: TCP provider, error 0 - No connection could be made because thew target machine actively refused it.) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 10061)"

IN the SQL native client configuration it shows alias name - CL3LMS_PRD, server=CL3LMS_PRD, protocol tcp, parameters 10051

Again if I do telnet CL3 10051, I get the error above.

From this same box I can register another SQL 2005 server without any problem and do the telnet to it OK

Just to emphasise:

(a) The SQL server configuration manager shows that TCP/IP is enabled, and that 10051 is the port (in IPALL, TCP port). Also I have checked the SQL server errorlog - it is definitely using 10051 as the port.

(b) The SQL server surface area configuration shows under local and remote connections using both TCP/IP and named pipes selected (I've tried both this and the using tcp/ip only option)

(c) SQL server browser is running

(d) There are NO firewalls etc involved

Any help or advice MUCH appreciated

Any thoughts anyone?

Management Studio Crash, Connection Failure

Jan 23, 2008

I have a problem establishing multiple connections in Management Studio. It is hard to describe, but it happens consistently when I try to open a new connection.

I can connect to the database engine successfully but when I try to open a "new query" the application just goes away without any errors. Both of these features requires their own connection and currently I cannot open both of them together and constantly have to switch back and forth by closing the tool. There are no messages in the sql error log, event viewer or windows log.

I believe it may be a problem with the installation of Management Studio because I only get this problem through my remote connections. I don't encounter this error when I access the server through Management Studio from my workstation and open multiple connections.

Has anyone seen this or can someone offer me some direction as to where to look?

SQL Server 2005 Instance Connection Failure

May 18, 2007

This has me totally baffled. I have a default instance of SQL Server 2005 on a server and I installed a second instance on the same server. It worked fine until I rebooted the server. Now I cannot connect to the second instance. The error message mentions remote connections but I'm not trying to connect to the instance remotely. The entire error message is below. Has anyone come across this?

Error Handling Connectoin Failure Of OLE DB Connection

Apr 11, 2008

Hello,

I'm looping through a set of IP's (sql servers), i'm changing the property ServerName for OLE DB connection dynamically.

So, I'm having a DataFlow Task inside a For each Task.

Data Flow task has OLE DB Source & OLE DB Destination. I've set ServerName of OLE DB Source to a variable which gets updated by For Each Loop.

Till now everything is working fine. However, if a Server (IP) is down it causes OLEDB Source to give an error.
So in my case, if one server is down, it gives error and does not proceed further. I want it to continue with other
servers.

How do i error handle this ?

Thank You,
Sandeep.

Microsoft Data Link Error - Connection Failure

Apr 21, 2008

Hi!

I've a computer with W2K SP4 installed. Previously SQL Express 2005 worked but according to the user it "just stopped working".

When selecting database on the server in the "Data Link Properties"-window he is given the following error message:

"Microsoft Data Link" "Login failed. Catalog information cannot be retrieved"
followed by
"Microsoft Data Link Error" "Connection failure"
Note: He is not given the error message "Server does not exist or access denied!"

- The SQL service is started (can be stopped and restarted without problem)
- I've re-installed SQL Express.
- I've checked and is certain the server name is correct (i.e. computernameSQLEXPRESS)

Any ideas here because I'm getting desperate?

Thanks in advance,

Peter Hartlén

Recovery :: FCI / AlwaysOn - Connection Remapping In Case Of Failure?

Jul 20, 2015

SQL 2012. I am working in understanding more the feature <AlwaysOn>. I have already worked with FCI (Failover Cluster Instance) and I would like to understand more about <AlwaysOn>.

Browsing internet/documentation I am getting more knowledge about <AlwaysOn> but a doubt persists:

1) Combination of FCI + AlwaysOn (2 SQL servers for FCI providing cluster instance: SQLClusterSQLReporting + 1 SQL server (at least) for <AlwaysOn>: SQLAOn/SQLReporting)

If the FCI instance is called SQLClusterSQLReporting, all the connections are mapped to this name.

But if the<AlwaysOn> feature is added to the system, in case of failure the name of <SQL Instance AlwaysOn> must be used therefore I am obliged to re-map all my connections to  SQLAOn/SQLReporting.

QUESTION: IS it correct?

If yes, I do not understand the usefulness for the <AlwaysON> feature that lead to re-map all the connection.

In my opinion it should be a <MAIN> SQL Instance covering both <FCI> + <AlwaysOn>.
