i'm absolutely new to any sort of data management
here it goes: suppose we store 100 .txt or .doc files in sql server and we want that none of the files data should match more than 60%: the question which arises are

1. how do we store files in ms-sql (binary format or normal text)?
2. how do we match the files?
3. what code we write in c# for this purpose?
4. has this nething to do with pattern recognition?

Adding A Full Text Search Across Multiple Tables (with Text Fields)

Sep 7, 2007

Hi, i'm trying to do a full text search on my site to add a weighting score to my results.  I have the following database structure:
Documents: - DocumentID (int, PK) - Title (varchar) - Content (text) - CategoryID (int, FK)
Categories: - CategoryID (int, PK) - CategoryName (varchar)
I need to create a full text index which searches the Title, Content and CategoryName fields.  I figured since i needed to search the CategoryName field i would create an indexed view.  I tried to execute the following query:
CREATE VIEW vw_DocumentsWITH SCHEMABINDING ASSELECT dbo.Documents.DocumentID, dbo.Documents.Title, dbo.Documents.[Content], dbo.Documents.CategoryID, dbo.Categories.CategoryNameFROM dbo.Categories INNER JOIN dbo.Documents ON dbo.Categories.CategoryID = dbo.Documents.CategoryID
GOCREATE UNIQUE CLUSTERED INDEX vw_DocumentsIndexON vw_Documents(DocumentID)
But this gave me the error:
Cannot create index on view 'dbname.dbo.vw_Documents'. It contains text, ntext, image or xml columns.
I tried converting the Content to a varchar(max) within my view but it still didn't like.
Appreciate if someone can tell me how this can be done as surely what i'm trying to do is not ground breaking.

Editing Word Docs Via T-SQL

Oct 23, 2007

Hello Everyone,

I have a client that stores word documents in a SQL server database and I am trying to import some text data from another database. The problem is that I need to convert the text to a word doc with minimal formating since they convert word docs to bitmaps in order to display the text on custom embedded devices that do not support unicode.

I was hoping someone could point me at the right docs/books that would give me the info on how to construct a word doc from T-SQL. Something like a word merge would work, but I'm not sure how to call it from a T-SQL stored proc.

Thanks a Million!

Serious Error In RS Licensing Docs On MS Web Site

Sep 18, 2006

Correct me if I'm wrong...
There is a potentially costly error in at least 2 Reporting Services
2005 licensing docs on Microsoft€™s web site. They fixed the docs a few months
ago after I called and told them about it but, now they are bad again! Here are
links to the bogus docs:

http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/howtolicensers.mspx

http://www.microsoft.com/sql/howtobuy/sqlserverlicensing.mspx

Both of these docs say that you need 2 SQL licenses to run
Reporting Services 2005 on a separate server from the SQL engine. This is not
true. You only need 1 license! You do of course need the correct number of CAL's or a CPU license.

The license.txt file that ships on the SQL Server 2005 standard edition install
disk is very clear about this. As you know this is the only doc that is
legally binding. It€™s the only doc that matters. Also, I called and talked to both the
licensing department and the SQL Server product manager about this. Both
confirmed that this was done on purpose in response to customer feedback!

Please help me pressure the marketing document at Microsoft
to fix these confusing documents once and for all! This will be my last post
about this issue. I felt that I had to make one final attempt to get this fixed
before I give up. I€™m having a lot of trouble getting people to actually read
the license.txt and understand the issue. I bet you $5 that the first reply to
this thread will be someone who says I€™m wrong but didn€™t actually read the
license.txt file.

Thanks,
Greg

DB Design :: Is File Stream Or Blob Best For Small Database With Word And Other Docs

Aug 15, 2015

I was putting a database together (its a C# application MSSQL)  the application will handle a few hundred customers records and save  maybe a couple of thousand  word docs/images/other doc files wondered if the way to go was blob or filestream, I see the medium and larger databases seem to go for filestream but just wondered as not much mentioned about smaller dbs.I do not think  security/disk space/super fast access  will be a big issue.

Anyone have any recommendations on how to bring together a search across multiple tables? Of Multiple Parameters, SqlDataSource And Text Boxes

Feb 12, 2006

Hi,Hope if someone can help me here. Keep in mind I an fairly new to .NET and SQL and am learning to break my MS Access habit :)
I have a web form that is using a SqlDataSource and a FormView control. In addition to this I have 2 text boxes. What I am trying to do is display results in the FormView based on what a user types into one of the Text Boxes (one or the other…Not both)

The SELECT statement in the SqlDataSource looks like this in concept.
SELECT Field1, Field2, Field3, Field4FROM dbo.MYTABLEWHERE (Field1 = @Field1) AND (Field2 IS NULL)OR  (Field2 = @Field2) AND (Field1 IS NULL)

I have the two text boxes pointing at the parameters (@Field1 and @Field2) so in theory I would expect that when a user populates one of the text boxes and clicks a button to databind the FormView it would display a record matching that criteria…. But it’s not all I get is a blank/missing FormView.
I tried different variations on the SQL statement and tried using  = ''  instead of IS NULL but still the same results. However, if I populate one text box with a value that I know is not in my table and populate the other with a value of which I know exists in my table is…It works. What am I missing?

Best Full-Text Indexing On Multiple Tables

Apr 7, 2006

Hi, I'm using SQL Express Advanced CTP and I'm in the process of adding a search facility to an asp.net site. I'm having a huge problem deciding the easiest and most optimised method to use when creating the index using multiple tables and where I can't seem to to produce a unique, clustered index.
The site I'm testing on is a portal in which we have various, different clients advertising their business.
A user will be able to search using keywords such as business activity,  business location and anything else that may appear in the business / publicity descriptions.
A publicity (publicity_id) may belong to one or more TOWNS (ville_id), e.g., Business A might have a promotional offer that applies to three local towns, Business B to all towns and Business C to just one town.
A publicity  may belong to one or more ACTIVITIES (activity_id), e.g., Business D is a resturant but has also a bar and Business E belongs to prĂŞt-Ă -porter, fashion, and beauty.
I'm using a view (ActivePubs) to produce a query across multiple tables Clients (business name), Publicities (publicity descriptions), Towns and Activities.
So from the nature of how the publicities are connected to activities and towns, I have many to many relationships that produce duplicate publicity_id values when I create the view, and thus this provides a problem when trying to create a  unique, clustered index on ActivePubs; and none of the coloumns produce unique values that monotonically increases, ideal, I believe, for creating unique, clustered indexs. I have also read that it is only best to use interger values for creating unique, clustered indexes.
I thought that if I SELECT the row number in ActivePubs,
SELECT ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY dbo.Publicities.publicity_id) AS ROWNUM, ...
in addition to the rest of the query, then I might be able to use the unique values from the query result to create the unique, clustered index
CREATE UNIQUE CLUSTERED INDEX CL_Inx_Pubs ON ActivePubs(ROWNUM)
but instead this produces the following error...
Cannot create index on view "ActivePubs" because it contains a ranking or aggregate window function. Remove the function from the view definition or, alternatively, do not index the view.
So I scrapped this idea but without this method using just
CREATE UNIQUE CLUSTERED INDEX CL_Inx_Pubs ON ActivePubs(publicity_id)
I get the following error...
CREATE UNIQUE INDEX terminated because a duplicate key was found for object name 'ActivePubs' and index name 'CL_Inx_Pubs'. The duplicate key value is (32).
I did consider NOT using a UNIQUE clustered index, but  got this error...
Cannot create nonunique clustered index on view 'daysandnights.ActivePubs' because only unique clustered indexes are allowed. Consider creating unique clustered index instead.
The only other method I think about using is storing the query in a temporary table instead of using a view, then creating an additional column in the temporary table to store a unique, automatically incremented, PK for the table to give me my unique index, but my guess is that this is overkill?
Much appreciate any help you can provide.

Splitting Text String Into Multiple Columns

Dec 19, 2002

I'm creating a web-based NT RAS report site and am looking for the most efficient way to import the data from NT Event log into SQL2k. I'm using the 'dumpel' utility from rsc kit and all is fine except the 10th column - the message detail:

"The user DOMAINuserid connected on port Mdm15 on 08/23/2002 at 07:25am and disconnected on 08/23/2002 at 07:27am. The user was active for 2 minutes 23 seconds. 78809 bytes were sent and 50675 bytes were received. The port speed was 49300."

I need to parse this one long text string into 6 distinct columns: userID, port, duration, bytes_xmt, bytes_rcv and portspeed. After a quick review of the rowsets, the strings seem to hold a consistent output ... no real variances I can see.

I've dablled with views but am facing a small performance issue that could get bigger: The sql server not only has to run the text file import package, but also the view to format the text dump into a workable dataset, then my report code bangs over 30 queries against the final dataset. It already takes our SQL2k server over 3 minutes to parse about 20,000 rows and the server's a beast (dual 1.8 p4 cpu, 3gb ram, raid, etc).

What I think would work best is to abandon the view (performance will only get worse as the row count increases) and instead INSERT the rows into one table.

Any ideas anyone? any good scripts out there that can help me to parse the long text string quicker that using substring and replace functions?

TIA:rolleyes:

Full-text Search Across Multiple Tables

Jan 13, 2006

Hello,We are developing an application against an MS SQL Server 2000 databasewhich requires that we implement full-text searching across columns inmultiple tables. The research that we have conducted seems to indicatethat this is not directly possible within SQL Server 2000. And we canfind no way to implement this as the catalogs that are generated aretable specific. As a work-around, we are planning to create a secondary table usedstrictly for searching which is going to denormalize and combine thesearchable data into one catalog. We just want to confirm that this isthe recommended approach or if there is an alternate solution anyonehas used. Please note that upgrading to SQL Server 2005 is not anoption.Thanks.John FlemingJoin Bytes!

Hi,
I have tried this code from http://jtkane.spaces.live.com/Blog/cns!1pWDBCiDX1uvH5ATJmNCVLPQ!316.entry for full-text search on multiple tables & columns.
Here's my code:
SELECT * from [tStaffDir] AS e, [tStaffDir_PrevEmp] t,CONTAINSTABLE([tStaffDir], *, @Name) as AwhereA.[KEY] = e.[ID] andt.[ID] = e.[ID]
I have FT the both the tables above and I am able to get results from the  [tStaffDir] table but not the [tStaffDir_PrevEmp] table. The [tStaffDir_PrevEmp] table does have a column (which is [ID]) that is indexed, unique and non-Nullable.Please advise what I should do and look out for.
Many Thanks.

Full Text Search In SQL 2005 On Multiple Tables

Dec 28, 2007

Hi, There have been a number of posts on querying multiple tables using full text in SQL Server.  I haven't quite found the answer I'm looking for, and I'm aware that in 2005 some full text functionality changed. I have an Events table which joins to a Venue table and also a many-to-many link (via a table called EventsToArtists) to an Artists table. When a user searches for "Rolling Stones Wembley" (without the apostrophes), I want the query to look in the following columns:Event.EventNameEvent.DescriptionArtists.ArtistNameVenue.VenueNameI have done quite a bit of testing on this, and haven't yet got the desired results.  Rolling Stones will be found in the Artists table, and Wembley in the Venue table.  At the moment, if I search for Rolling Stones, it behaves as expected.  But if search for the venue name as well I get no results.  I'm pretty sure this is because EventName wouldn't contain all key words and so the record is excluded from the results.  At the moment I am using INNER JOINs between the tables....perhaps I should be executing a full text search on each table's catalogue and then do a UNION to join the resultsets?Hope you can point me in the right direction. Thanks

Import Data From Text File To Multiple Tables

Feb 8, 2008

I have a text file which contains the data that has to be inserted into multiple tables. The columnames of table 1 form the H1 follwed by Details D1,D1,D1...
The column names of table two form the H2 followed by details D2,D2,D2 so on and similarly for Table 3.
Am using a link server to the file directory and schema.ini which defines the column names fofr the text file

Is there any way of defining column names for more than one table through the schema.ini? or is there any other way through I can parse the text file contents to multiple tables?

Sample text file:
H1,JobDate,JobNumber,FileName,
D1,13/02/2008,asdf123,text1.txt
D1,13/02/2008,asdf123,text2.txt
D1,13/02/2008,asdf123,text3.txt

H2,PagesUsed,PagesPrinted,Pages emailed
D2,10,10,9
D2,1000,100,99
D2,50,22,93

Schema.Ini - defined for the first table

[LogConfig.txt]
Format=CSVDelimited
CharacterSet=ANSI
ColNameHeaders=true
Col1=JobDateText Width 20
Col2=JobNumberText Width 20
Col3=FileName Text Width 100

Hoe do i define the column names for the second table. All these contents are in a single text file and need to be parsed only thru sql.

Any help/suggestions are welcome..
Thanks a lot for taking time to read this.

DTS - Split Single Source Record (text) To Multiple Target (sql)

Aug 31, 2000

I am using DTS and VBScript in DataPump tasks in order to transfer large amounts of data from text files to an SQL database.

As the database uses a normalized schema, there is often the case of inserting multiple records in a destination table from various fields of the same record of the source text file.

For example, if the source record contains information about goods sold like date, customer, item code, item name and total amount, and does so for a maximum of 3 goods per sale (row), therefore has the structure:

[date], [custid], [code1], [name1], [amount1], [code2], [name2], [amount2], [code3], [name3], [amount3]

trying to transfer that record to a [SALES] target table (in a normalized database), we would have to split each source record as follows:

[date], [custid], [code1], [name1], [amount1]
[date], [custid], [code2], [name2], [amount2]
[date], [custid], [code3], [name3], [amount3]

What is the best way to do this using DTS?

I have tried using a datapump task and VBScript, and I guess it has to do with the DTSTransformStat_**** constants, but none of those I used seems to work

Reporting Services :: Selecting Data Using One Parameter With Multiple Text Values

Oct 9, 2015

I am using SSRS 2008 R2 Report Builder 3.0 (10.50.4276.0) . I have simple set of data which has a persons Title and Name e.g. Mr Smith, Miss Jones, Doctor Foster

The report has a parameter where the user can select which records to show based on the matching titles (Mr, Miss, Doctor)

The Query for the report uses Title in (@Title) where @Title is the only parameter which can take multiple values. The report works correctly for any 1 value selected, but as soon as 2 or more values are ticked in the drop down, it fails.

I believe the parameter value is being passed into the query with a comma separating the values e.g. Mr,Miss which causes the IN statement to give an error, as the statement would be where Title IN ('Mr,Miss') which does not match any of the data values.

The parameter value passed needs to be 'Mr','Miss' for the IN statement to work. What statement do I have to put in the report query to get it to select any of the data rows where the title matches any 1 of the selected values?
