Urgent Need For Problem Of Increase In Database Size For Ntext Type Fields

Jan 22, 2006

I had several databases under sqlserver ce 2.0 (in my Pocket PC) which contained ntext fields. The size of the databases varies from 50,000 to 700,000 records. The size of an ntext field is from 4 bytes to 2 megabytes.

When I recreated my databases under sql server 2005 mobile on my desktop using VS2005 (see my post just under this one), I saw a big difference between the old and new database sizes. This problem was mentioned in one of the posts in this forum and the reply was to replace ntext data with ncharvar type.

Since most of my data was longer than 4000 bytes (which is the limit for nvarchar type), I couldn't use this suggestion. Instead, I changed my ntext type to image type and used a GetByte conversion.

No change! The size of the new database is still 50 % larger than the original. Since the difference is around 300 MB, this is an unacceptable thing.

Now, I either wait from somebody to suggest a new solution (apart from keeping the ntext data in a separate binary file and keep index of the records of this file in the records of sql database) or, most preferably, have

Microsoft solve this problem as soon as possible.

Thanks for any help in advance

Convert Ntext Type To XML Type

Dec 6, 2007

I have a ntext column which stores rows of xml data. Ive decided that the best way to query the xml data is to Convert the ntext data into xml data type and use Sql Server 2005 builtin Xml Query tools to perform FLWOR expressions. The problem Im having is getting the ntext data Converted to xml. When I try to convert the ntext text, I of course get an error that local variables of ntext type are invalid.Any suggestions on a way I might accomplish this? Thanks, -lance

NText Data Type Issue

Feb 15, 2002

Have a table storing nText data tied into a Cold Fusion front end. The Cold Fusion returns the values fine, but when querying in Query analyzer the messages are being truncated. In Enterprize Manager I get a <Long Text> message.

I ran OBJECTPROPERTY and found that TableTextInRowLimit was set to 0, but even after i set it to 1 on our test system with a value of 2000, it still truncated.

Also, the field is set to ntext with a length of 16. I havent worked much with nText, anyone with advise would be much appricated.

Problem Accessing A Column Of Type Ntext

Jan 16, 2007

Hi,
I am working on an application which accesses SQL database. I have a table complaint in which i have a coulmn 'history' of type "ntext". When i insert a value, the value gets stored in the db correctly, but I cannot access the complete data from that field using a simple select query. I had to export the table to a text file only then i could view the complete data of the field.
I wrote the query in query analyzer as:
"select history from complaint where pkey=142"
& the result i got is:
"
###### admin: Jan 8, 2007 3:53:57 PM GMT Type: Inactive (Key 10) Description: Activity yet to be started State: Planned "

This is only a part of the entire string that I had entered.

My requirement is that I need to access the data from the ntext field & save it in a variable & then display the entire data in my application. Can anyone tell me how should i use the select query so that i get the entire data without having to go thru the export data procedure.
Please help!!!

But I am able to insert into a temporary table having a column whose datatype is nvarchar) using this SELECT clause in SQL 2000. Please advice me how this happens. If I am not worng, implicit conversion has happened. But this insert fails raising the same error in SQL 2005. Please help me to find the difference

Using Inserted / Deleted Tables With Text / NText / Image Data Type

Oct 6, 2004

Hi folks,

Table:

a int,
b int,
c int,
d text

I need to change my AFTER - Trigger from this (example!):

select * into #ins from inserted

to something like

select *(without Text / nText / image -columns) into #ins from inserted.

So I tried to build a string like this: (using INFORMATIONSCHEMES)

select @sql = 'select a,b,c into #ins from inserted'
exec(@sql)

a,b,c are not of Text, nText or Image datatype.

After executing the trigger, I get an error, that inserted is unknown.

Does anyone know how to solve this ?

Thx.

Function That Replaces Ntext And Compares Ntext With Nvarchar

Nov 28, 2007

I am running this query to an sql server 2000 database from my aspcode:"select * from MyTable whereMySqlServerRemoveStressFunction(MyNtextColumn) = '" &MyAdoRemoveStressFunction(MyString) & "'"The problem is that the replace function doesn't work with the ntextdatatype (so as to replace the stresses with an empty string). I hadto implement the MySqlServerRemoveStressFunction, i.e. a function thattakes a column name as a parameter and returns the text contained inthis column having replaced some letters of the text (the letters withstress). Unfortunately, I could not do that because user-definedfunctions cannot return a value of ntext. So I have the following idea:"select * from MyTable whereCheckIfTheyAreEqualIngoringTheStesses(MyNtextColum n, '" & MyString &"')"How can I implement the CheckIfTheyAreEqualIngoringTheStessesfunction? (I don't know how to combine these functions to do what Iwant: TEXTPTR, UPDATETEXT, WRITETEXT, READTEXT)

Ntext Vs. Nvarchar, Mysterious Data In The Database

Oct 2, 2007

I hope this is the right forum for this question, my apologies in advance if it isn't....

We have a web based CGI product (written in C++ VS 6) that uses ODBC and takes text from a submitted web page and stores it in a SQL Server table in a field of type "ntext". The user in question is copying and pasting this text from an MS Word 2003 document. After the initial save our app errors out trying to access the table it just wrote to, and when we look in the table we see that up to **200 carriage returns** have been mysteriously inserted into the ntext field!! (Our product has been out in the field with no such problem for several years, so we are thinking it's related to something specific the customer is doing - perhaps with using MS Word for the source text.) We have tried but cannot duplicate the problem, but the customer sees it with each attempt to modify the table in question. The only thing that I see out of the ordinary is that the field in question is of type "ntext" - which supports unicode, instead of nvarchar. Does any of this ring a bell for anybody? I'm thinking of changing the field type to nvarchar to see if that solves the problem.
Thanks, Steve Bradbery

Database Type Question

Oct 16, 2007

Hi everyone, I am trying to create a page on my website that will be unique depending on the logged on user.  Basically, I have a aspnet_User table, a Team table, and a Player table.  What I am trying to do is make a datagridview that is editable, but only showing the 'players' from the player table that is associated to that member.  I have tried to set a relation between the tables in a dataset, but that only got me so far before I got stuck, and I've also tried to do it making a view between the three tables before I got stuck.  My tables look like this:
'aspnet_Users' has aUser IDUser Namealong with the other column associated with this table
'Team' has a Team IDTeam NameUser Name
'Player' has aPlayer NameTeam IDPlayer RatingClass
What I would really like to be able to do, is when the webpage is loaded, the datagridview reads the User Name from the aspnet_User table and matches it to the corresponding Team ID in the Team Table and then filters the 'Player' table to only show players with the corresponding Team ID.  I have been stuck on this for two weeks now and it is driving me crazy.  I seem to get a breakthrough only to get stuck again.  Please Help!!!  If you need any more info from me, please let me know!

Sql With C#: Access Database Data Type Mismatch

May 7, 2008

I am trying to delete the row with the minimum date. First I read in the minimum date using:

OleDbCommand myCommand = new OleDbCommand("SELECT MIN(Date) FROM 30_Day_Data", myConnection);

myCommand.ExecuteNonQuery();
OleDbDataReader myReader = myCommand.ExecuteReader();

This then gives me a date in the format "1/2/2008 12:09:33 AM". Since that is the minimum date, I need that row deleted, so I use:

OleDbCommand myDeleteCommand = new OleDbCommand("DELETE FROM 30_Day_Data WHERE Date='" + "myReader().GetValue(0).ToString()" + "'", myConnection);
myDeleteCommand.ExecuteNonQuery();

This gives me an error saying "Data type mismatch in criteria expression". I have no idea how to format the date so that it can get deleted. I have tried nearly everything with no success. Any help is appriciated.

Thanks!

dbo.LabTests Column_name Type Length Prec Scale
AnalyteID int 4 10 0 (Primary Key)
AnalyteName nvarch 510
CasNumber nvarch 510
Result numeric 5 8 2
Unit nvarch 510
SampleID int 4 10 0 (Foreign Key)

AnalyteID AnalyteName CasNumber Result Unit SampleID
1 Acetone 123-456-9 134.0 ug/L 1
2 Bezene 666-12-8 2.0 ug/L 1
3 Cobalt 421-008-7 10.0 ug/L 1
4 Acetone 123-456-9 201.0 ug/Kg 2
5 Bezene 666-12-8 1.0 ug/Kg 2
6 Cobalt 421-008-7 22.0 ug/Kg 2
7 Acetone 123-456-9 357.0 ug/L 3
8 Bezene 666-12-8 9.0 ug/L 3
9 Cobalt 421-008-7 56.0 ug/L 3

When I ran the following T-SQL code:
USE ChemAveRpd

GO

SELECT *

FROM dbo.LabTests as LabResults

Where AnalyteName = Acetone

GO

I got the following error:

Msg 207, Level 16, State 1, Line 3

Invalid column name 'Acetone'.

Please help and tell me what right syntax I should write for [Where AnalyteName = Acetone] to generate a listing of LabResults for Acetone.

Thanks in advance,
Scott Chang

This is nutty.  I never got this error on my local machine.  The only lower case m in the sql is by near the variable Ratingsum like in line 59.

Float Type Steals My Decimal Points And Money Type Kills My Query

Mar 28, 2008

Happy Friday!
A while since I have posted a question, and this one is probably real easy.
I am trying to store numeric values from a php form in MSSQL 2000 database. However, the columns are set to float and if the value is 1.00, when entered into the table it is saved as 1

If I change the column type to money, the query fails, with an error message of conversion of datatype varchar to datatype money statement terminated.

anybody know what I need to do? do I need to do something in my query to specify that this is NOT varchar data?

How To Declare A Procedure Parameter Type To Match A Referenced Table Colum Type

Dec 14, 2007

I like to define my procedure parameter type to match a referenced table colum type,
similar to PL/SQL "table.column%type" notation.
That way, when the table column is changes, I would not have to change my stored proc.
Any suggestion?

Sqlbulkcopy Error : The Given Value Of Type SqlDecimal From The Data Source Cannot Be Converted To Type Decimal Of The Specified

Apr 16, 2008

Hi,

The table in SQL has column Availability Decimal (8,8)

Code in c# using sqlbulkcopy trying to insert values like 0.0000, 0.9999, 29.999 into the field Availability
we tried the datatype float , but it is converting values to scientific expressions€¦(eg: 8E-05) and the values displayed in reports are scientifc expressions which is not expected
we need to store values as is
