Need Tool For Managing Database Object Ownership
Jun 26, 2006
we have a group of developers which have created and asked us (DBAs) to
create many objects in the databases including tables / stored
procedures / functions / etc.
since our company is growing, however we have an increasing amount of
objects that have either been abandoned or have several versions.
in an effort to clean of the huge amount of clutter and anytime that
something simple like a stored proc needs to change, it is almost
impossible to predict exactly where we will see negative effects of
this change.
i am looking for a system (preferably without developing our own tool)
that would keep track of history of database objects (in terms of who
created it and what purpose it has) as well as link that to all the
developers/users we might need to notify of any changes to that object.
Also, this should be linked to the application which rely on the
object.
bottom line... every object in the database needs to have at least 1
corresponding contact as well as the applications which us it.
with this information, we can much more easily maintain objects in our
DBs.
thx

A co-worker recently quit the company, and all of his storedprocedures and DTS packages are apparently under his name. Is thereany way to change his account to another (ie administrator or SA)??I am afraid to delete his account in fear all the stored procedureswill be lost. (we have backups, but ... ugh)

I have a user who has been granted db_owner rights to a database and want him to be able create new views using the dbo schema. When the user creates a view right now, the schema created is under their username. How can I change this so that when a user creates a new view, they always create it under the dbo schema.

Hi all,
I have a problem while executing a stored procedure. I have created a database called "cpd" and created some stored procedures. for all my stored procedure the owner is "CPDUSER". when ever i am executing any stored procedures i have to write the user name first else it is not working.
let's say i have a stored procedure called "cp_checklogin". it takes 2 parameters. to execute this i have to write
exec cpduser.cp_checklogin 'admin@jk.com', 'admin'
but i don't want to write the user name there. and if without username "CPDUSER" i am trying to execute the stored procedure it is throwing me the error that "the stored procedure cp_checklogin is not exist in the database". can anybody suggest me. it's very urgent.
Thanks in advance

Here's one. :)
I have Database A in Server 1 which contains objects (tables and SPs) that are owned by users other than dbo. Then I detach this database from Server 1 using sp_detach_db and attach it to Server2 (sp_attach_db). Even if the same logins exist or are created in Server 2, I still won't be able to access the objects in Database A using these logins. I know that this happens because of different SIDs for the same login names across the 2 servers. So given that I want to achieve this without having to use the Import Wizard or any other method, how do I go around this lil bit of a problem? Any thoughts? :)
Thanks!

Logged in under a login id that is a db_owner on a database, I can not bind a rule owned by dbo to a table owned by dbo.
Following does not work:
EXEC sp_bindrule 'dbo.rule1', 'table1.column1'
error:You do not own a table named 'table1' that has a column named 'column1'.
Following does not work:
EXEC sp_bindrule 'dbo.rule1', 'dbo.table1.column1'
error: Rule, table and user datatype must be in current database
To bind the rule, I had to change table ownership to my login id and then bind the rule. I then changed table ownership back to dbo. This method seems odd. I do not have this problem when binding defaults to dbo owned tables.
Any one else run into this?

I have created a sql login account called "webuser" and has given public role in my database. In my asp.net application i build connection string using above account and its password . We give permission on store procedure for for the above account to execute .We dont give table level permission for the above account . When we run the application with the above settings it runs fine on test server . However Now i have transfered the databse object to live server with its permissions . Now while I executing the aspx page , I am getting above error . I have checked that the store procedure has execute permission for webuser account and dbo(i.e SA) has all the permissions for all database objects . Still why i am getting error ? I had problem because those objects have ownership sky not dbo. I can not change ownership when replicate the database. How do I replicate database objects that are not owned by dbo? Is this possible or I have to change ownership from sky to dbo before replicate the database?

I am developing an office automation software for a government department. To start with, I have decided to first automate the salary section of the department. Because of some issues like, TCO, easy support and maintenance, scalability etc., I have decided to use SQL Server 2005 database with VB 2005 front-end.
I have planned the layout for this first part and found that in only employee salary table, 40,000 records per month will be stored. That comes out to be around 480,000 records annually. This is for one table alone, excluding data in other tables.
Since each section of the department will be integrated into this later, this application will become the backbone the department. The employee service, leave, salary, allowance, deduction and other records shall be maintained.
For this type of mission-critical application, I want to get some queries cleared:
(1) What backup strategy should be followed? I want to have schedule and maual backups both. Is there any way to have a mirror image on another server?
(2) What considerations to keep in mind in the inital stage of database design?
(3) How to keep the design scalable and configurable to meet future needs?

I installed VS2005 on my laptop at the office and of course, got the default instance of SQLEXPRESS. When I take my laptop home and log in (I use my NETWORKlogin login everywhere), I can't authenticate to use the database -- it doesn't like my login unless I'm physically at my office.
So, thinking I'm clever, I changed my SQLEXPRESS instance to use 'SQL Server and Windows Authentication mode' and tried to use the 'sa' login in my connection string. Login failed for 'sa' and since I had never set a password (yes, I tried using a blank) I executed the following query on my db:
exec sp_password @new='WHATEVERPASSWORD', @loginame = 'sa'
The query works (?) but it my connection string doesn't and I'm still unable to use the management tool when not on the original network.
So, I thought I'd add a new, super secret special user, but alas, that has completely escaped me. That frightens me a bit because I'd really like to be able to deploy my database to my web host and trust the my connection strings will work.
So, here are my questions:
1. Can I set up my instance so that I don't have to be on the network on which I installed it in order for it to recognize me (since it's self contained on my machine)? If so, how?
2. How do I create new SQL users?
3. Has the connection string changed significantly, and consequently, am I missing something fundamental in my attempts to connect? If someone could toss out a working SQL Server Express 2005 connection string that doesn't use Windows authentication, that would be really appreciated.
Here's some info from my box, if it helps.
Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express 9.00.1399.00
Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2000.085.1117.00 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)
Microsoft MSXML 2.6 3.0 4.0 5.0 6.0
Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0.2900.2180
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.50727.42
Operating System 5.1.2600
Thanks for any help out there.

Hello,
I haven written a Windows program in Visual Studio 2005. This program stores data in and retrieves data from a SQL Express database. The customer is starting to use the program and filling the database with data. However the program is still under construction (new functionality will be added) and so is the database (new tables, views etc. will be added).
Of course I could send the customer the new database, but than all data already entered will be lost.....
I'm thinking about using the SQL Management Studio Express and VS2005 to connect remotely to the database (a VPN connection is availabe) but worry about performance issues.... Or should I use some kind of replication / synchronization and how, because this is new to me.
What is the best way to solve this 'problem' ?

We are having a problem with cross database ownership chaining. Below is a description of the problem:
I have a domain group named DOM1GROUP1
I have a domain user DOM2USER1 who is a member of DOM1GROUP1 (note that they are in different domains)
I have a database DB1 which contains a stored procedure (st_insertdata) that does an insert in a table (tb_data) on DB2
DOM1GROUP1 has been granted login rights on the SQL Server
DOM1GROUP1 is a user in both DB1 and DB2
DOM1GROUP1 has execute rights on procedure st_insertdata and insert rights on table tb_data.
All objects are owned by the dbo schema.
The database owner for DB1 and DB2 is sa
When DOM1USER1 executes st_insertdata an error is returned:
The server principal "DOM1USER1" is not able to access the database "DB2" under the current security context.
I've played around with the options "trustworthy" and "db chaining" but these do not make any difference. The only thing that fixes this problem is if I create a login for DOM2USER1 and grant it access to DB2 (with no other rights other than membership of the public role).
It seems that SQL Server does not recognize that DOM2USER1 is a user in DB2 by virtue of its membership of the domain group DOM1GROUP1. Is there a way to get this to work without granting explicit rights to DOM2USER1?

Hi...
Does anybody know of an open source script I can download that will enable me to manage an SQL database? I was thinking of writing my own script to do this but I assumed that there is probably already one out there.

Hi Guys,
I am not sure this is the right section to post this in, but ModelRight (www.modelright.com) is releasing a new version of its database design tool that supports SQS 2005/2008. I think the tool provides many advantages over the existing tools (deep SQS support, excellent UI, easy to use, etc).
Currently ModelRight is looking for SQS beta testers. If you want to participate just please go to the website and download the latest version.
Thanks.

When I use the sql 2005 "Database Diagrams" tool for the first time I always get the message: "The Database does not have one or more of the support objects required to use database diagramming. Do you wish to create them?"
1. Does anyone know what the " support objects" referred to are?
2. Why SQL doesn't automatically create these support objects for me? (e.g. do they require a lot of hard disk space so they shouldn't routinely be created?)
3. Is there any way to make Sql automatically create them?
If you can address any of these points I'd appreciate it.

Hi, I'm looking for a tool to compare 2 sql server database and makes a script of the differences (like an added table or record). We want to use it to generate a script which we can send to our customers to update their database if a change has been made. Example: We send our customers database A. After half a a year they request some changes to be made to the application that affects the database, say a table has to be added. We want the tool to automatically detect the difference between database A when it was first released and after the changes has been made and generate a script. Anyone suggestions? T.I.A., ratjetoes.

What tool should I use to view SQL Server Compact Edition database?
I have VS2008 Professional, but I didn't find any tool in the installation. So I tried to install the SQL Server Developer Edition, which is included in the VS2008 package, but the installation has quit saying the that there is nothing to upgrade (there is probably newer version of SQL installed by VS2008 itself).
I also tried to download and install SQL Server Managment Studio Express. The installation went well, but then I wasn't able to select any SSCE database (there was only SQL Server Express or something like that selectable).
Is there anything else I should do?

Hi,
I'm a newbie with SQL so excuse my igorance. I'm running an application that uses MSDE2000 as its source db and would like to create a small [10 field] db that would also use MSDE. I want to use a separate db though and not share the first one. What I'm looking for is suggestions on a development tool to create the database with as I'm not familiar with SQL tools. I have a lot of Access experience though so the concepts are not new.
Database requirements are pretty basic.
10 fields [8 text, 2 numeric]
A button field to Add New Record
A search field
Column sorting.
That's it. I could do this in a pinch with Access so knowing what tool to use should make it easy. Any chance that I could do it with Access and then port it to a SQL db?
Thanks,
Bob
