Negative Sign (unary Operator) Not Displayed For Numeric Data Types
Feb 20, 2007
I have a table with a field that has a numeric data type (15,2) and length of 9. The problem is that it won't display the actual negative sign for any values less than 0 when running a query. Any ideas? I've used Query Analyzer as well as Access.
How can I remove the - after an import into a database. I want to be able to convert all negative numbers to positive, once the data has been imported into the table
I have a disconnected utility dimension with the following data and a waterfall->subwaterfall hierarchy. I have ignore if same as parent set on sub water fall. The unary operator is assigned to the relevant level
Opening ~ Opening ~ Price ~ Price ~ Total Composition ~ Composition L1 + Total Composition ~ Composition L2 + Total Composition ~ Composition L3 + Total Composition ~ Composition L4 + Total Composition ~ Composition L5 + Closing ~ Closing ~
I'm using MDX to set values to the members
SCOPE(Measures.Waterfall,[Dim Waterfall].[Water Fall].&[Price]); THIS=Measures.LowestPrice; END SCOPE; SCOPE(Measures.Waterfall,[Dim Waterfall].[Sub Water Fall].&[Composition L1]); THIS=Measures.[Composition L1]; END SCOPE;
[Code] ....
But when i run a simple select query
SELECT {[Measures].[Waterfall]} ON COLUMNS, [Dim Waterfall].[Water Fall].[Water Fall] ON ROWS FROM [GPA]
I only get a value for price. Total Composition is NULL. If I change my query to look at the subwaterfall level then I see values for composition L1->L5, so I know there are values there I was expecting the unary operator to aggregate my composition measures into Total Composition.
I should point out that every measure that's being assigned to my utility dim is calculated with in excess of a dozen or so steps and intermediate calcs, is this causing some kind of solve order issue?
I know that as a workaround i could probably do something like
SCOPE(Measures.Waterfall,[Dim Waterfall].[Water Fall].&[Total Composition]);Â Â Â Â Â Â Â THIS=SUM([Dim Waterfall].[Hierarchy].[Water Fall].&[Total Composition].Children,Measures.Waterfall);Â Â Â Â END SCOPE;
But that defeats the purpose of the unary operators
I have a lot of decimals in the flat files. So far the largest numbers map to a numeric(18,6).
My question is, is DT_NUMERIC the correct datatype for this data? In which case, what size do I need to set it? Right now it's 18. Couldn't find much info on this.
The following is the full error message. I am posting the code after.

Hi, If I make a select query on my table, this error appears: "The data types text and varchar are incompatible in the equal to operator"
In my table , I have 4 fields with "text" datatype. My query is like : "Select * from table where field1='test'" It's seems to be simple, but it doesn't work!!!
On the Microsoft website, I am trying to understand the how the decimal and numeric data types work. It says that valid values for precision are:
- 10^38 +1 through 10^38 - 1
I don't understand the purpose of the negative sign before the first 10.I understand that decimal (p,s) refers to haing a total of p digits (before and after the decimal) and only s number of digits to the right of the decimal. How does the equation above relate to the 's' portion of the syntax?
Hi, i have a table in sqlexpress named Contacts: ID (int) -primary key- name (varchar(30)) lastname (varchar(30)) phone (varchar(15)) fax (varchar(15)) desc (text) In my default.aspx page, i have a GridView that has the conecction to this table. The GridView has the Editing and Deleting checkbox enabled but my problem is that i can't edit or delete any row when the page is running and the massage is this: "The data types text and nvarchar are incompatible in the equal to operator" It would have to work, but i don't know what happen, Please, any help!
Im reading in a CSV wiht double quote text delimiters. Data came from mySQL.
One column in mySql is text(65535) which is equivalent to varchar(max) as far as i understand.
This particular column can be blank, not null, just blank. If its blank i want to put in a value so i added a Derived column shape and added the following formula:
LEN(my_Column) < 1 ? Â "" : Â (DT_TEXT)my_Column
I get the below error from this expression:
The data types "DT_WSTR" and "DT_TEXT" are incompatible for the conditional operator. The operand types cannot be implicitly cast into compatible types for the conditional operation. To perform this operation, one or both operands need to be explicitly cast with a cast operator.
I have tried this without casting but still get an error. As I have configured the column in the flatfile connector as DT_TEXT, im not sure where its getting DT_STR from.
I get this error: The data types text and text are incompatible in the equal to operator. when trying to execute this query SELECT id FROM users WHERE username=@userName
I am trying to create a store procedure inside of SQL Management Studio console and I kept getting errors. Here's my store procedure.
Code Block CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[sqlOutlookSearch] -- Add the parameters for the stored procedure here @OLIssueID int = NULL, @searchString varchar(1000) = NULL AS BEGIN -- SET NOCOUNT ON added to prevent extra result sets from -- interfering with SELECT statements. SET NOCOUNT ON; -- Insert statements for procedure here IF @OLIssueID <> 11111 SELECT * FROM [OLissue], [Outlook] WHERE [OLissue].[issueID] = @OLIssueID AND [OLissue].[issueID] = [Outlook].[issueID] AND [Outlook].[contents] LIKE + ''%'' + @searchString + ''%'' ELSE SELECT * FROM [Outlook] WHERE [Outlook].[contents] LIKE + ''%'' + @searchString + ''%'' END
And the error I kept getting is:
Msg 402, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sqlOutlookSearch, Line 18
The data types varchar and varchar are incompatible in the modulo operator.
Msg 402, Level 16, State 1, Procedure sqlOutlookSearch, Line 21

I have an Excel/ vba module to update a SQL database. One of the data is numeric. If the data is a positive number, there is no problem, but if the number (zscore) in Excel is negative an error pops up: Error converting datatype varchar to numeric.
Does anyone have any basic, simple scripts of sp's that I can give mycomputer operators to use to monitor for serious conditions on our sqlservers? We are new in the ms-sql arena, a small shop and we cantreally purchase any tools to monitor these servers, but we need somebasic checks that we can use to make sure a server is performing in areasonable fashion, no blocks, cpu<xx%, memory not pegged, IO working,etc...and we need to be able to do this without bugging ourprogrammers every time we are wondering why things are slowwnig down.We are a split shop between as400s and sql servers, and our operationsstaff has no problem performing this type of duty on the 400s. I thinksince the sql servers are so easy to deploy into production, the ideaof how to monitor these things health got lost in the shuffle andallowing the programmers to do it just serves to destabilize ourenvironment. Please help! Our shop has turned to chaos since we went live withMSSQL centric applications and everytime one programmer "resolves anissue" some other programmers application starts to act up.
when I run below query I got Error of Arithmetic overflow error converting numeric to data type numeric declare @a numeric(16,4)
set @a=99362600999900.0000
The 99362600999900 value before numeric is 14 and variable that i declared is of 16 length. Then why this error is coming ? When I set Length 18 then error removed.
I'm getting the above when trying to populate a variable. The values in question are : @N = 21 @SumXY = -1303765191530058.2251000000 @SumXSumY = -5338556963168643.7875000000
When I run, SELECT (@N * @SumXY) - (@SumXSumY * @SumXSumY) in QA I get the result OK which is -28500190448996439680147097583285.072256 ie 32 places to left of decimal and 6 to the right When I try the following ie to populate a variable with that value I get the error - SELECT R2Top = (@N * @SumXY) - (@SumXSumY * @SumXSumY)@R2Top is NUMERIC (38, 10)
I´m exporting an ms-excel file, then I use a lookup transformation to get a field from a SQL Server 2005 table. The Lookup transformation editor, after selecting the table, shows a warning that says:
at least one mapping between a column from available input columns ans a column from available lookup columns must be defined on the columns page.
So I try to make a relationship in the Lookup transformation editor's column tab where I find the Available input columns and the available lookup columns but I get the following error:
The following columns cannot be mapped: [Department, DEP_CLEGALCODE] One or more columns do not have supported data types, or their data types do not match.
The field in SLQ Server is varchar(10) and the input field is a derived column transformation; I have tried different Data Types but I always have the same error.
The DataFlow is: ExcelSource --> Derived Column --> Lookup --> Flat file destination
I have just installed MS SQL in my computer and I am trying to run MS SQL and Visual studio for the first time. However I have run into a problem that I can't solve. Basically the problem is that the data I fetch from the database is not being displayed/bound to the ddl I have on the page.
I have used VS to configure the sqlDataAdapter, DataSet, sqlConnection, and the sqlCommands. Basically the data is being fetched from the Northwind sample database. From the preview option on the sqlDataAdapter I am able to preview the information from the database. So it seems to work. I have also configured the ddl settings so that the Categories table is the datasource. I have also set the ddl.DataTextField = "CategoryName"; ddl .DataValueField = "CategoryID";
When I compiled and run the page, no error messages are generated, but the ddl is still completely blank and I can't understand why.
Ok, I have a table with IP addresses stored in decimal format using both positive and negative numbers. The way that they are stored is: Positve 1 thru 2147483647 = 0.0.0.1 - 127.255.255.255 Negative -2147483648 thru -1 = 128.0.0.0 - 255.255.255.255 Conversion positive x/2^24 . (x/2^24)/2^16 . etc . etc negative (x+2^32)/2^24 . ((x+2^32)/2^24)/2^16 . etc . etc
I have a script which works by using UNION and the WHERE statements are x>0 x<0
My problem is I need to use a 3rd party app to run the script (McAfee ePO). McAfee does not recognize the UNION. My question is, can I acheive the same results as the script below, without using UNION.
SELECT ReportFullPathNode.FullPathName, cast(cast(IPSubnetMask.IP_Start as bigint)/16777216 as varchar) + '.' + cast(cast(IPSubnetMask.IP_Start as bigint)%16777216/65536 as varchar) + '.' + cast(cast(IPSubnetMask.IP_Start as bigint)%16777216%65536/256 as varchar) + '.' + cast(cast(IPSubnetMask.IP_Start as bigint)%16777216%65536%256 as varchar), cast(cast(IPSubnetMask.IP_End as bigint)/16777216 as varchar) + '.' + cast(cast(IPSubnetMask.IP_End as bigint)%16777216/65536 as varchar) + '.' + cast(cast(IPSubnetMask.IP_End as bigint)%16777216%65536/256 as varchar) + '.' + cast(cast(IPSubnetMask.IP_End as bigint)%16777216%65536%256 as varchar), cast(IPSubnetMask.LeftMostBits as varchar), IPSubnetMask.IP_Start FROM IPSubnetMask, ReportFullPathNode ReportFullPathNode WHERE IPSubnetMask.IP_Start>0 and IPSubnetMask.ParentID = ReportFullPathNode.LowestNodeID UNION ALL SELECT ReportFullPathNode.FullPathName, cast(cast(4294967296+IPSubnetMask.IP_Start as bigint)/16777216 as varchar) + '.' + cast(cast(4294967296+IPSubnetMask.IP_Start as bigint)%16777216/65536 as varchar) + '.' + cast(cast(4294967296+IPSubnetMask.IP_Start as bigint)%16777216%65536/256 as varchar) + '.' + cast(cast(4294967296+IPSubnetMask.IP_Start as bigint)%16777216%65536%256 as varchar), cast(cast(4294967296+IPSubnetMask.IP_End as bigint)/16777216 as varchar) + '.' + cast(cast(4294967296+IPSubnetMask.IP_End as bigint)%16777216/65536 as varchar) + '.' + cast(cast(4294967296+IPSubnetMask.IP_End as bigint)%16777216%65536/256 as varchar) + '.' + cast(cast(4294967296+IPSubnetMask.IP_End as bigint)%16777216%65536%256 as varchar), cast(IPSubnetMask.LeftMostBits as varchar), IPSubnetMask.IP_Start+4294967296 FROM IPSubnetMask, ReportFullPathNode ReportFullPathNode WHERE IPSubnetMask.IP_Start<0 and IPSubnetMask.ParentID = ReportFullPathNode.LowestNodeID
I am trying to utilize the left join to display all the links for a particular record by ID. When I test my code in query analyzer I get repeats of records and links for one ID. I dont want repeats, I want to see only the links associated with each ID. This is my query code below, I have tested it with several variations but still getting the same results.
Code Snippet
SELECT T_ProgramGuests.ProgramID, T_ProgramGuests.GuestName, T_ProgramGuests.GuestDescription, T_ProgramLinks.URL, T_ProgramLinks.Description FROM T_ProgramGuests LEFT OUTER JOIN T_ProgramLinks ON T_ProgramGuests.ProgramID = T_ProgramLinks.ProgramID WHERE (T_ProgramGuests.ProgramID = 9734)
I've been reading up on this in the forum but everyone does this differently which makes it more confusing.
So if 9734 looked like this:
John Smith - making of widgets 'John's Widgets Website' (this would be a link)
But if John Smith had three actual links why am I only seeing the first one?
What is the easiest way for me to get my data to display correctly and not have repeats?
i have a problem with deriving sql statement which involve a unary relationship for one of the table.
i have tables with the following attributes: studetn table: student_email (PK), student name section table: section_no, section_semester (composite primary key)
the above has a a M:M relationship. (in my sql database, i will have a student_section table in btw).
There is also another evaluation table which records the student_email of student evaluating another student (this will be shown as team_member email) evaluation table: evaluation_id (PK), student_email, teammember_email, studentinput
I use the following sql to get the student name for the student who is evaluating and the students being evaluated: select form_id, temp_tb.student_email, temp_tb.student_name, teammember_email, student.student_name as teammember_name, studentinput from (select form_id, student.student_email, student.student_name, teammember_email, studentinput from student inner join form_evaluation on evaluation.student_email=student.student_email) as temp_tb inner join student on temp_tb.teammember_email=student.student_email
After that, i need to join to the student_section table. However because a student can be in different sections, so the student section table will have 2 entries with the same studentemail, therefore the above query (when inner join with student_section table)actually retrieve the same result twice.
after I've created a new column in a table with the "Create a new column" with custom members. How do I actually remove this newly created column without recreating the dimension ?
I have a table of products, and many products have the same name only they are different sizes. I want to only select a particular size like 20 oz, but if it does not exist in that size I want to select the next appropriate size (and which case if it does not exist i wish to select the next appropriate size and so on .. Does any one know how I can accomplish this and would be willing to help me out by posting some code, some direction ??
Again I encountered a very strange problem which displayed the predicted attribute values as percentage format? The data type of the attribute is actually double, why is that?
That's really frustrated.
Thanks a lot in advance for your kind advices and I am looking forward to hearing from you shortly.
Any working example of what a ragged hierarchy should look like for the unary and custom rollup calcs to work?
I have a parent-child hierarchy that works as expected but can't manage to get the same with a flattened ragged hierarchy. Parents disappear if any of the children aren't in the fact table (even though the children are set to '~' and the parent has its own custom rollup calc).
Do I need to replicate the unary and measure formula all the way to the end in the same way i do the member name/value (so i can set ignore if same as parent)? Setting unary to null seems to work when the key doesnt exist in the fact table but the default behaviour for null is '+' so i end up getting wrong results if the key does exist!

In words
I have an EAV style fact table. The measure name is defined in a 'dim measure' table. Some measures exist in the fact, some are manufactured using Unary ops or custom rollup formulas.
Here's a diagram of the hierarchy
I want to recreate the functionality as a flattened hierarchy (the number of levels is fixed), but can't seem to do it... Here's what I've gotten for the same hierarchy created using the two different approaches
Below are queries to recreate the tables from adventureworksdw2014. The parent child hierarchy is set up the standard way... measureparentkey is parent. set name, unary and formula as expected. Set NonLeafDataHidden for the parent attribute. I've tried various combinations for the ragged hierarchy but none work 100% of the time. I want to have a user defined hierarchy for the performance benefits.
--Fact view CREATE View dbo.FactSales AS select fis.ProductKey , fis.OrderDateKey , 1 AS MeasureKey -- salesAmount , fis.SalesAmount AS MeasureValue
I have a stored procedure, which returns a list of results/data.
Some of that data includes a count.
What I would like is to filter the data where we see all the count data that has 0 or all the count data greater than zero.
Now it is entirely possibly for me to go back to the stored procedure and amend it so that that is entirely possible, however i was wondering if it was also possible to produce this by filtering data at the dataset.
I provide a filter at the datset by clicking on dataset and then filters and then the expression for the field for the search count and having a parameter that provides the value.
Now it is straightforward if i just want to show all results where the searchcount = 0.
The problem lies where i want to show all results that have a searchcount > 0. The problem being it only allows me to choose one operator = or >, not a combination of both, meaning I cannot have the option to have either results.
I am trying to find a reference for a client that lists the fields available to be substituted into a data driven subscription from the query, along with the expected data types.  For example, the field on whether or not to include a link to the report seems to be expecting a bit data type.I have searched and can't seem to find anything.  I guess I could walk through the interface and try different data types, but if  a list exists, that would be better.Â
