I installed SQL 2005 Standard Edition first, then MSDE plus its SP4. Both instances are named (MC05WXPPROSQLMC for 2005 and MC05WXPPROUCTO for MSDE). I inadvertently had not allowed the TCP/IP protocol for MSDE during the installation, so I did it manually later, through SVRNETCN.exe which also ships with SQL 2005.
Now: I CAN connect to the MSDE instance with any SQL2005 tools through shared memory. But I CANNOT connect to it through TCP/IP. I guess that this is because wrong port binding for the SQL2005 instance, MSDE instance and SQL Server Browser, but I'm not sure.
Ey, I need to do few operations on every record in a table. Do I have to use cursor? Do SQL has something like 'FOR' or 'WHILE'? I've read somewere that cursors should be avoided due to their time consumption.
I have a medical records system, SoapWare v4.90, that uses MSDE (SQL2000) databases. Due to the 2gb limitation, I am trying to migrate over to SQL 2005 (Standard or Express) which I have heard works fine. The SoapWare has a datamanager that allows me to log in to the MSDE instance, detach the SoapWare databases from msde (as well as do backups, etc) which I can confirm are detached.
Then I log back into a SQL2005 database instance using the datamanager and try to attach the database. This is what their pictured instructions demonstrate. However, I get the following error:
Database 'sw_charts' cannot be upgraded because it is read-only or has read-only files. Make the database or files writeable, and rerun recovery.
Of course, some of the entries will be read only, since doctors have to sign off the charts and are not allowed to subsequently change them. But I should still be able to switch over to sql 2005?!?!?!?
Or... is there a way to attach the databases to SQLExpress manually?
I will try to abstract my problem to an example, simple as possible.
In a relational database exists 2 tables: Cars (containing car name and car id) and Costs (containing costs caused by cars - with columns like cost_id, car_id (fk to table cars), cost_category (something like 'buy', 'cleaning', 'maintenance'), cost_date and costs)
In the olap cube I've 2 dimensions: Cars and Costs and a measure sum(cost). How can I create a measure containing the max value of the sum(costs) group by car_id? In the SQL world it would be something like

Hi, I'm developing a page in asp.net using a sqldb and one of the values I'm sending to the database is a date/time value. I only want the table to show the date in short format, no time. Is there a way to restrict or convert the data in the table design mode? Thanks Raif
I just started with all this 'replication' subject and run into some 'stange ?' problem. I suscesfully set-up publisher and distributor on one computer. create subscriber on another. And seems that this is working with no errors as I see in Replication monitor, details. All agent turned to verbose output and showing no errors at all. but the strange problem that the database does not (!) appear at subscriber (?????) I mean - no tables, no stored procedures, no nothing - how it can be possible ? What I'm doing wrong ? Or what I should do ?
P.S. Forgot to add: Both servers running latest SQL server 2005 with latest Service Pack. Subscribtion of type 'push'

I just upgraded my SQL 2000 server to SQL2005. I forked out all that money, and now it takes 4~5 seconds for a webpage to load. You can see for yourself. It's pathetic. When I ran SQL2000, i was getting instant results on any webpage. I can't find any tool to optimize the tables or databases. And when I used caused SQL Server to use 100% cpu and 500+MB of ram. I can't have this.Can anyone give me some tips as to why SQL 2005 is so slow?
I am unable to install 32-bit SQL Server Integration Services on the server due to something that was left behind by the 64-bit version.
I've uninstalled SQL Server 2005 64-bit and when I try to install the 32-bit version of Integration Services, I get this error: "Failed to install and configure assemblies C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft SQL Server90DTSTasksMicrosoft.SqlServer.MSMQTask.dll in the COM+ catalog. Error: -2146233087 Error message: Unknown error 0x80131501 Error descrition: FATAL: Could not find component 'Microsoft.SqlServer.Dts.Task.MessageQueueTask.ServCompMQTask' we just installed."
I can't seem to figure out how to resolve this problem with the COM+ and I can't remember if Integration Services is required.
I'm not sure if it's the setup I did wrong, but I can't seem to get my text datatype in my database to store more than 900 characters. I'm trying to setup a news database for my website, which will populate the information into a datagrid. To test, I manually added a news item in the database through the visual studio 2003 gui. I immediately noticed a problem as the I was getting an error after a long news item saying:
"The value you entered is not consistent with the data type or length of the column, or over grid buffer limit."
I couldn't find anthing to set the buffer limit and the datatype is "text" filled with simple text in the column. As a further test, I simply entered 12334567890123... up to 900 characters and still recevied the error.
I would appreciate someone leading me in the right direction on this one.
I am trying to change the computer name of a machine running MSDE but I get an error when SQL Server starts. With regular SQL when I change the name of a computer I re-run setup and setup fixes this problem. MSDE can only be installed from unattended mode so I can’t rerun setup and fix the problem.
My question is "How do I change the name of a computer running MSDE with out reinstalling MSDE"
We currently have the problem, that all our machines are produced with the same name and afterwards the name is changed. So we have the problem that the checksum key for the MSDE isn't valid anymore. As MSDE can only be installed from unattended mode so I can’t rerun setup and fix the problem. Does anyone know a solution for this problem ?? A program recalculating the cheksum ??

The only db development that I have ever done is in MS Access. I have a project at work that is being accomplished in VB and I need a db engine to use as the back end. Visual studio came with a copy of MSDE. Is this tool worth using or should I invest in mySQL? Are there any advantages to using MSDE over mySQL?
I have some production boxes on Win 2000 32-bits OS and some production servers have been upgraded to Win2003 64-bit OS runing SQL Server 2005. There are also a number of Win2003 32-bit OS running SQL 2005.
The issue is that when linking the 64-bit production servers to the 32-bit boxes running SQL 2005 / Win 2003 OS, the linking seems to succeed, but I am unable to see a number of entries in sys.objects. Typically, these objects are User Stored Procedures.
Moreover, the linking seemed to have worked, but data extraction does not take place between the servers. However, there are no errors. The objects (user stored procs) exist on the 64-bit side, but linking does not actually happen.
Microsoft KB has addressed this in SQL 2000 case in this KB article, but has not suggested a solution for SQL 2005.

For Example I have 1 CPU License of SQL 2005, but I have 2 sockets in my physical box. One socket is having 2 cores. So I want to say the SQL server (2005) to use the 2 cpu's only( i.e Any of one socket)

I am installing sql2005 sp1 on a w2k3 Cluster. All we need is the database engine however the vendor I am working with said to install sp1 which is fine but they also said you need to install Integration services with SP1 for the Maintenenace plans. Do I need to install Integration services on the cluster to create maintenance plans with sql2005 sp1 ?? I am getting mixed answers.

What is the quivalent of EM for SQLExpress2005? With the old SQL 2000 I used EM to manage tables, SPs and such. Now, I cannot even find the databases - I installed the Club Starter Kit and I want to view and modify some tables. How do I do that?
Hi folks, i have VSTS installed and TFS beta refresh 3. all is working fine. How can i use Visual Studio 2005 to create a new database on the remote server? i can connecto to it fine using the 'server explorer' tab .. but of course it only lists databases that currently exist. How can i create a new one? lastly, i have no installed sql2005 express edition or whatever it is called LOCALLY on my machine. the reason i didn't do this is becuase i was hoping to use the enterprise sql 2005 server.
