Newbie In Tsql - Finding Latest Failed Jobs

I am a newbie to tsql. I am trying to find if a job has failed, if so I only want to pickup the lastest job. I want to see name,message and run date. I know I need to find the max run_date and run_time for each job_id. I know that I need to join the sysjobhistory table and the sysjobs tables. I also know that I need status not equal to one. I have tried thousands of different things and nothing seems to work. If I ever get this to work then I only want to look at jobs in the last 24 hours. I am not going to include any of my job since I have tried so many things and I have been all over the map.

So here is my dilemma:
We have licensed software from a 3rd party and we do not have the source code, nor can we do anything to change the database schema, write our own procs, triggers, etc.
With that said, we want to know which records in certain tables have been added or modified since a certain time (for example, in the past 24 hours). However, none of the tables has any datetime or timestamp columns on them for create date, update date, etc.
I tried to look into hacking thru DBCC log (dbname, 2) to see if that would help, what a mess. Using a tool like that from Luminent or Red Gate doesnt help either, because long term this needs to be automated if possible. Does anyone have any ideas on how to do this, or is the answer simply, "Sorry mate, you need to get them to allow you to change the database to add new columns and/or triggers". :)

Hello,
I inherited a SQL server with jobs backing up a series of DB's to a single backup device. The media is overwritten each time the job runs.
I have created a duplicate job on a separate server, except this time the media is being appended to each time the job runs.
I can't seem to find the option to set media to overwrite or append. This is simple enough with manual backup jobs, but is there a place to establish this within a pre-set job?
For what its worth, the TSQL syntax is thus;
BACKUP DATABASE [DB_NAME] TO [DB_BACKUP_DEVICE] WITH NOINIT , NOUNLOAD , NAME = N'DB_NAME backup', SKIP , STATS = 10

Does anyone know any good MS SQL or TSQL tutorials? I know the basics of SQL, such as joins, functions such as COUNT, SUM etc so I do not need one of them. Problem is I am using MS SQL at a new role in work and finding it difficult. I write the statements how I would in oracle of mysql but find that they refuse to work, and I can not find/use the MS SQL Help to find what I want.

I have two tables
t_DTM_DATA_STAGING around 2 million records
t_DTM_DATA around 251 million records
The below SQL statement looks for records in the t_DTM_DATA_STAGING table that are not in the t_DTM_DATA table and adds them to a 3rd table. (t_DTM_DATA_STAGING2)
This statement has been running fine for weeks, but now it seems to get hung every day. I ran sp_Who2 and it says the status is runnable. I let it run for around 5 or 6 hours the other day to see if it will finish but it didn't. This SQL job is step 3 in a 6 step SQLAgent job that usually finishes in 30 to 45 minutes.
I'm not sure how to troubleshoot this problem. No other jobs are running at the time this job runs.
Could this SQL statement be written a better way?

I've tried setting up a basic databound datagrid using the MSDE SQL server. I get a login Failed error when I try to display the page in the browser inside VS.NET 2003. I don't get any errors until I actually try to preview the page in the browser. Sorry for the long post below... which is the full error message. What, from what you see, can I do to fix this?
Please be forewarned that I have never used MSDE before or SQL server for that matter (I'm a MySQL guy making the switch!). For that reason I am a little confused about this error because I thought everything was ok because in Visual Studio the DataAdapter previewed with no errors and there were no build errors. I was able to drag the authors table over from the Northwind db, create a dataset and fill it from its dataAdapter.

I guys,
Does Anyone of the SQLServer Guru has a smart script to alert DBA by email for failed jobs or jobs running more then their normal time(long running jobs), so that I dont have to go and look at the jobs everyday manually...on different servers...

Hi,
I currently have serverA importing data from an AS400 oledb connection and serverB on hot-standby as a mirror. The data import is being performed via an SSIS scheduled job.
I've yet to implement any solution in the following case:
If the database on serverA fails, it will failover to the mirror. But the jobs will still be on serverA. Ideally, I'm assuming the jobs should not run on serverB since it will be attempting to update the mirrored database. So, I am wondering if both servers can have identical copies of SSIS packages and jobs and simply (?) enable or disable them based on which server will be hosting the principal database.
Is there any solution where the jobs can automatically be disabled on the server with the mirrored database and enabled on the principal database depending on its status?

Environment: SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition x64, 3 server cluster. Two active servers with seperate instances and one passive server. SQL Server was installed on the two active servers.
Problem: When I fail over either of my instances to the passive server in the cluster my maintenance jobs fail to run and there are error messages in the application event viewer "SSIS Subsystem failed to load". I am guessing that all of the needed components are not installed on the passive server? Is this a close guess? If so, exactly what components are missing and do you have to have another license to install them?

DTS job fails with the following error, A Server (Windows 2003 SE with SP1) has 4 SQL Server 2000 instances with mixed of SP3 & SP4. But few jobs are failing in all the 4 instances.
Executed as user: DCADB04SYSTEM. DTSRun: Cannot create COM Server to load and execute DTS Package. Error -2147221008 (800401F0): CoInitialize has not been called. Process Exit Code -2147221008. The step failed.
Appreciate you suggestion to fix this,

We have our SQL Server 2005 hosted at a datacenter and have only SS Management Studio access (no term serv, no event log, etc.). Also, our hosting company has disabled the Database Mail feature. We have over 60 jobs running on a minute/hourly/daily basis that are critical for our business. It is super important for us to know if and when a job failed.
Given this scenario, how do you suggest we implement monitoring/notification of failed jobs?

I have a really odd one here. We have a production server which is running SQL 2000 Enterprise Edition SP3. It has a number of databases which are backed up nightly. Last night all of the back-up jobs failed with the following error: -
Msg 913, Sev 16: Could not find database ID ##. Database may not be activated yet or may be in transition. [SQLSTATE 42000]
The databases are in good shape - no issues to report. When I run the Agent Job code within a Query Analyser session it works fine.
When I try and re-start the back-up from the Agent Job it continues to fail with the same error.
Any ideas?

I've been trying to work out this problem for awhile, and figured I really need help. I have a set of data that shows the results of a number of tests that I have been doing on a software. Each test I have done records the test_ID, test_Result, and the date_Tested. An example of the columns would be like this:

Is there a way I can query this? I've tried using "distinct test_ID" but it would still show the repeated test_ID due to the date_Tested not being the same.. also Group By will not work. I'm not sure what to do here. Any ideas anyone?

I have a column which stores dates (datetime data type). I would liketo fetch one data which is the most latest date among them. So if thereare 04/01/06, 05/08/06, 05/12/06, 06/15/06, then 06/15/06 is the one Ineed to output.how can I write this in sql stmt?select datebeginfrom testtablewhere datebegin = ?????I don't think it is simple as I thought. Hi all,I have the following tableName Date Wish ValidName is person's name, date defaults to getdate() and is neverassigned directly (datetime field), Wish is some message, and Valid isbit, 1 indicates if the wish is the latest, and therefore valid. Hi AllThis is a belter that my little brain can't handle.Basically I have 1 SQL table that contains the following fields:Stock CodeStock DescReferenceTransaction DateQtyCost PriceBasically this table stores all the transaction lines of when a userbooks stock items into stock so that they can look at a journal ofthis goods in as and when they please.My task is that the user wants a list of all the stock items with thelast cost price that they were booked in at.So I think I have to find the last transaction date used for eachstock code and then bring this back as 1 row per stock code with theabove fields of data.How the whats-its can I do this? HiI'm trying to get some data fra a few tables, but I'm having a fewproblems.What I would like is this:The tables contain somn info on manuscripts and which process thatmanuascript has received.a manuscript is represented once in manuascript tablethat manuascript can have several records in the process table.What I want is to get data for each manuscript and the last process thatthe manuscript received from the process table.This SQL gets the manuscript for each process it has received. I need help in constructing SQL. I have the following table
Document
PKEY id varchar
DocumentRev
PKEY docID -> Document.id
PKEY rev int
TransmitDoc
PKEY transmitNo int
PKEY projectID varchar
PKEY documentID -> DocumentRev.docID
PKEY rev -> DocumentRev.rev
Given a transmitNo and projectID, what is the SQL can be used to get all document that have latest/largest rev that is not in TransmitDoc?
example I have 4 document.
documentA rev 1
documentA rev 2
documentB rev 1
documentB rev 2
if the given transmitNo and projectID have
documentA rev 2
The result should only show
documentB rev 2
documentA rev 1 and documentB rev 1 should not be shown because it is not the largest.
