Newbie To Remote SQL 2005 Express - Need Roles/security Advice

Aug 30, 2006

Hi,

I'm
building an asp.net website using web developer express and I have a
SQL 2005 express install on the same machine.  Using windows security,
everything works fine for development.

Now I need to get it working at the client site, where the web server and SQL 2005 Express are on different machines.

I'd
tried using windows authentication but that didn't work, probably
wasn't doing it correctly.  I'd like to try SQL Authentication, at least temporarily, since I
can replicate that on my laptop at home easily I think.

I created a new SQL login but was really baffled by the screens showing roles and schemas, etc.   There's so many roles to choose from and wasn't sure if this new login needed to own any schemas.

I
did turn on remote connections and mixed-mode authentication, the
probably now is my asp.net membership provider login page isn't
authenticating correctly, maybe my permissions are wrong on the
aspnet_.....  tables for users, roles, profiles, etc.

Any advice?

thanks,
Bruce

Newbie Need Some Advice

Apr 17, 2006

Hi,

I need some advice regarding displaying data from my SQL db in a web page. What I would like to do is this (think "job site" or similar when reading):

1. Create a list of registrated users (in db) where
2. every user listed is a hyperlink to
3. a profile page which uses
4. a read-only template for viewing purposes only

All items above are for read-only purposes - no data input of any kind. The "template" will only contain certain fields from the registration. The ultimate goal is to have a web page (or section) for each 'category' where a list of members matching that category are displayed.

I'm familiar with SQL query langauge but not with what would be "good practices" to accomplish the above. I have read some threads where people suggest using XML/XSLT to do similar tasks. What I would love is advice on how to approach the above. If there's any sample code (or similar) as a reference, I would be MOST grateful.

Thanks a lot in advance!

Advice For Newbie Please

Jul 19, 2006

I want to convert an Access-based application to a SQL solution with either a web front-end or Windows forms (it’s used by 120 users). Can anyone give me any advice? General advice is great but also can anyone help with the following:
(a) In my Access app I have a function that allows users to paste a comment from one form into a field on another. Will I be able to achieve this using either windows forms or ASP.NET VB?
(b) What is the SQL version of autonumber so that new records automatically have an ID that is unique in the same way that Access generates numbers?

Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks

I've been using SQL Server 2005 Std. for my development work on a laptop w/ 2 GHz Celeron and 768 Mb RAM. Now that Express Edition has Reporting Services and Full-Text Search, would I be wise to just use it instead? I actually have both on my machine since Express Edition installed with VS 2005 Standard. Also, if I uninstall SQL Server 2005 Std. what will I lose? Thanks in advance.

Newbie Questions On Schemas, Roles, Users & Logins

Apr 5, 2008

Sql 2005
I want to grate execute permissions on my stored procedures to a role. While creating the role, it asks for "schemas owned by this role".
To me, the schema is merely a namespace that allows you to group objects, but arent schemas such as db_datawriter roles that are central to the db and only admin type users should have ownership of these, correct ?

In a nutshell, I want to:
create a new role and assign a user to that role
with a stored procedure, grant execute permissions to this role

I was confused by the sql 2005 dialog that asks me to take ownership of roles such as db_datawriter, db_datareader etc, wouldnt that mess up other things with the database ?

help ...

I think its time I review all of the above items
role
user
login
schema

Sql Server Express 2005 Newbie: Bcp Utility

Mar 8, 2008

I'm trying to learn how to use the bcp utility... but I keep getting an error message that says:
SQLState = 08001, NativeError = 2Error = [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server [2].SQLState = HYT00, NativeError = 0Error = [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]Login timeout expiredSQLState = 08001, NativeError = 2Error = [Microsoft][SQL Native Client]An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.
 The command i'm running is:
bcp territore.dbo.import in territorydata.csv -T -c
territore is my database name... and dbo i think is the owner name.
and the table is called Import
I don't know how to check the default settings to see if remote connections are enabled.  Any help would be appreciated.

Problems Of Remote Connections For Creating A SQLCLR Project In SQL Server Express-ADO.NET 2.0-VB 2005 Express Via Network/LAN

Sep 19, 2007

Hi all,

In my office computer network system (LAN), my Windows XP Pro PC has SQL Server Express and VB 2005 Express installed and I was granted to have the Administrator priviledge to access SQL Server Express. I tried to create a SQLCLR project in my terminal PC.
1) I tried to set up a remote connection to SQL Server Express in the following way: SQL Server EXpress => SQL Server Surface Area Configuration. In the Surface Area Configuration for Service and Connection - local, I clicked on Remote Connection of Database Engine, SQLEXPRESS and I had a "dot" on "Local and remote connections" and "Using TCP/IP only". Then I clicked on "Apply" and "OK" buttons. Then I went to restart my database engine in SQL Server Management. When I went to check SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration, I saw the arrow is pointing to "Service", not to "Remote Connections"!!!??? Is it right/normal? Please comment on this matter and tell me how I can have "Remote Connecton" on after I selected it.

2) After I restarted the database engine (I guess!!), I executed the following project code (copied from a book) in my VB 2005 Express:

Roles-security

Jan 19, 2007

Hi,
I have added two roles to sql server. One called Officeusers. The other AdminUsers
Added the appropriate logins to these roles. For example; james, john, ahmad to OfficeUsers and Mat, Nick to AdminUsers.
How can these roles be now used in a connectionstring? I can use each user login and his relevant password in a connectionstring to connect to sql server but not sure how/where/when the Roles come in to development.
i.e. do I need to use the role in the connectionstring? if so then what happens to the password.
Not quite clear about all these.
Thanks

SQL Express 2005 Remote Connection With VWD 2005 Express

Jun 22, 2006

Hi all,Just wondering if SQL 2005 express edition can be connected remotely. I've set up SQL 2005 Express on a separate machine and am having trouble connecting to it from VWD when creating the websites. Currently I've set up ASP.NET 2.0 Framework on the remote machine with IIS6 using Windows Server 2003 Web Edition. And I am directly editing the website remotely on the server machine from my PC. Could someone please help me in setting up a remote connection from VWD to the SQL Server?I've enabled TCP/IP setting in the SQL Configuration Manager but still getting errors. Could this be an issue with Express Edition? Because if it is I also have a copy of SQL Server 2005 to install. Any direction to resolve in this issue would be greatly appreciated.PS. I'm new to this so pls bear with me. Thanks.

Required Microsoft Sql Server 2005 Express Server Roles For JDBC Connection

Mar 28, 2007

Hi!

I have developed a database in MS SQL Server 2005 Express, to which I would require only bulkadmin server role from an external java application, because I only need to update rows, insert values or use select queries in the database.

The problem is that, using either the Microsoft JDBC Driver 1.1 or the Java JDBC ODBC Driver and the Windows XP Data Base (ODBC) configurations, I need a user with sysadmin server role inside Sql Server, otherwise JDBC won't connect to the database using the selected user. Even if I leave the sql login with setupadmin or any server role lower than sysadmin, the connection is refused.

Is there no way to connect using JDBC to MS Sql Server 2005 other than granting the connected user sysadmin rights? My code looks as follows:

Code Snippet

String driver = "com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerDriver";
String url = "jdbc:sqlserver://FIREBLADE\SQLEXPRESS";
String user = "username";
String password = "password$$";
Connection conn;

Class.forName(driver);
conn = DriverManager.getConnection(url,user,password);
if (conn != null)
System.out.println("SQL Server Connection established ...");

I have heard that Java JDBC connections to Microsoft require high-level access.

Any informed answer is more than welcome. Thanks for reading my post!

ASPNETDB Deploy With Users/Roles Security

Apr 10, 2007

I have developed a site on my local machine utilizing the built-in security/roles provides by ASP.NET 2.0.  I am trying to publish the web application to a production server.  It will publish correctly, however the ASPNETDB is not recognized.  The folder app_data is created with the proper database files.  My question is how do I set this up to use the data I have created in this database?  I've searched on how to accomplish this but haven't found any definitive answers.  I have found ScottGu's blog to be useful, but I was wondering if there is a different way.
1 - Do I push the data to a SQL Server install via SQL scripts?
2 - Can I link to the ASPNETDB that is created locally on my machine?
3 - If I make changes to the application and re-publish, is there a way to keep from overwriting the ASPNETDB on the server?
I am a unsure of how the built-in roles/security works when you are ready to push something to production.  If someone wouldn't mind pointing me in the right direction, it would greatly be appreciated.  Any literature, advice, links, etc.. would be great.

- Thanks

Implement CheckAccess In Custom Security Extension With Non-builtin Roles

Jan 21, 2008

Roles Table:

RoleID, RoleName
<RoleID1>, Allow_ClientFolder
<RoleID2>, Allow_ClientReportA
<RoleID3>, Allow_ClientReportB
<RoleID4>, Allow_CompanyFolder
<RoleID5>, Allow_CompanyReportA
<RoleID6>, Allow_CompanyReportB

UsersInRoles Table:

UserID, RoleID
<UserID1>, <RoleID1>
<UserID1>, <RoleID2>
<UserID2>, <RoleID4>
<UserID2>, <RoleID5>
<UserID2>, <RoleID6>
<UserID2>, <RoleID1>
<UserID2>, <RoleID3>

e.g.
when the <UserID1> clicks on the "home" link show only "Client" folder and when <UserID1> clicks on the "Client" folder only "ClientReportA" will show.

Here is the accessable map for each user:

<UserID1>
Client

ClientReportA

<UserID2>
Client

ClientReportB
Company

CompanyReportA
CompanyReportB

Question:
What is the best way to implement CheckAccess? At first I thought I can access the item names and I can test authorization through that, but AceCollection contains operation permission of the accessing object.

Database Connection SQL Express 2005 Remote

Jan 2, 2008

Good day.

I am trying to look at a friends database that they have developed. Not having used SQL Server Express before I am experiencing problems trying to remotely connect to their database.

He connects locally just fine of course.

I get the error message about remote connectionsand the default settings so I have enabled TCP/IP and Named Pipes as well as cleared SQLSERVER Express in my firewall settings. I also stopped and restarted the service, but still get the same error message.

My connection parameters are like:

Server type: Database Engine
Server name: http://sql.exampledatabase.net (should http be here? have tried with and without same error)
Authentication: SQL Server Authentication (windows authentication? If so, how do I change to such?)
Login: http://username (should http be here? have tried with and without same error)
Password: password

TITLE: Connect to Server
------------------------------
Cannot connect to http://sql.exampledatabase.net

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 53)

Desperately Need Help With SQL Express 2005 Remote Connection Problem

Jun 2, 2008

I have Microsoft SQL express server 2005 setup on one server and I have a website setup on another server, I am trying to get some data from the SQL server on the other one.
I am currently getting this error: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.) I have done plenty of searching on Google, and already been through the tutorial on changing the setting in ‘SQL Server 2005 Surface Area Configuration’ to allow remote connections
http://blogs.msdn.com/sqlexpress/archive/2005/05/05/415084.aspxhttp://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;914277
It works perfectly when I call data from my local machine.
Also I don’t know if it is a timeout issue, because I tested in on two other servers I have access to and it worked on one of them.
Any help would be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)

How do I go about granting remote connections to SQL Server Express?

Does the web server have to have SQL Server Express installed in order to run apps that utilize SQL Server 2005 Express databases?

Do I grant access locally on my machine or do I have to be on the web server to grant remote connections?

I've been using .net 1.1 with access databases for the past couple of years, so this is all new to me.

Thanks.

SQL Server Express 2005 And A Remote Data Source

Jul 24, 2007

I'm using SQL Server 2005 Express, Windows XP SP2. I connect using Windows authentication.

The data source that I'm trying to hit is on a remote server. It's an OpenLink ODBC Data source, and the server is in another location. SQL Server 2005 Express and the ODBC connection are both installed/configured locally on my machine.

I can connect to the remote server. The DSN exists as a System DSN.

The DSN has its own proprietary configuration utility, which I can configure so that the server name is XPLILLEYGSQLEXPRESS. The configuration utility doesn't care; I connect successfully one way or the other.

When I open Management Studio Express, I can see my database (CMS) listed under the "Databases" folder, but there's no tables in there, other than the system tables.

So my question is, what am I missing?

Thanks
Geoff Lilley
