Hello,
When I am using DISTINCT in the SELECT clause for a table having a column of datatype "ntext" in SQL 2000 as well SQL 2005, it fails giving the error as "ntext data type cannot be selected as DISTINCT". This is coz
"The text, ntext, or image data type cannot be selected as DISTINCT."
But I am able to insert into a temporary table having a column whose datatype is nvarchar) using this SELECT clause in SQL 2000. Please advice me how this happens. If I am not worng, implicit conversion has happened. But this insert fails raising the same error in SQL 2005. Please help me to find the difference
thanks in advance!
I'm having a problem building a query for an application I'm writing. Basically, there are a bunch of records in a table, and some of them may have the same identifier code. I only want one of each identifier code. The table looks like this:
Memo --------- Msg_Identifier varchar(60) Memo_ID int (pk) Subject varchar(64) Message text Priority int Deleted int
My query:
SELECT DISTINCT Msg_Identifier, Memo_ID, Subject, Message, Priority FROM Memo WHERE Deleted = '0'
When I run this query, I get "The text data type cannot be selected as DISTINCT because it is not comparable."
I only want Msg_Identifier to be the distinct field, and it's obviously not set up as text. I've used SELECT DISTINCT in the past but I don't ever recall hitting an issue like this. What's the best way to do it?
Hi! ALL I 'm writing an ASP.NET Application(1.1) , but i 've problem. I used ntext data type to store my data as follows "Ä?ể sá» dụng các dịch vụ của VUNGOIMORA.COM bạn phải Ä‘á»?c kỹ các thông tin quy định và phải tuân thủ các Ä‘iá»?u quy định sau:
Have a table storing nText data tied into a Cold Fusion front end. The Cold Fusion returns the values fine, but when querying in Query analyzer the messages are being truncated. In Enterprize Manager I get a <Long Text> message.
I ran OBJECTPROPERTY and found that TableTextInRowLimit was set to 0, but even after i set it to 1 on our test system with a value of 2000, it still truncated.
Also, the field is set to ntext with a length of 16. I havent worked much with nText, anyone with advise would be much appricated.
I have a column in SQL server which is of type ntext. Selecting the specific column to view it in report builder, an error message appears with the following description:
- Cannot run this report. The grouping expression 'nameofcolumn' returns the datatype binary. The Grouping Expression cannot return binary data.
Report Builder recognises this as if it was an image...
Hello Guys,Have been getting this error( Implicit conversion from data type ntext to varchar is not allowed. Use the CONVERT function to run this query. ) when running on the live environment but it was fine when run locally. If anyone has similar problem please let me know the fix you have done. Thank you.
Field is not listed as text in any of the databases it is a varchar(255) - and that can be changed if that is what causes the issue. Â
But here is my syntax which produces the error Msg 421, Level 16, State 1, Procedure, Line 2
The text data type cannot be selected as DISTINCT because it is not comparable.
DECLARE @c NVARCHAR(MAX) WITH c1 AS ( SELECT [abcd] AS table_name FROM [intranet].[dbo].[soccerfieldinfo] where [abcd] IS NOT NULL ), c2 AS ( SELECT Row_Number() OVER (ORDER BY table_name) AS r
I get the rows(records) I want by removing the RequestDateTime column from the Select query SELECT distinct et.configname as 'Part Number', substring(email,(charindex('@',email)+1),len(email)) as 'email ending',u.company_name as 'Company',u.city as 'City',u.country as 'Country' --,RequestDateTime as 'Date Downloaded'from new_products.dbo.modelrequests etleft outer join cc_host.dbo.usr_list u on et.username = convert(varchar(50),u.[user_id])where interfacename like '%download%'and result=0and u.country = 'JP'and CONVERT(DATETIME, RequestDateTime, 102)>= convert(DATETIME,'12/5/2007', 102)GROUP BY email,et.configname,u.company_name,u.city,u.country,requestdatetime I want to show the RequestDateTime for the 1600 records that do get selected. How can I put RequestDateTime back in the resulting table output without it being part of the Distinct clause?
I have a table with 3 columns - userID, score, dateCompleted
From this table I wish to select the highest score for each userID and the date for that score. If there is more than one row with the same userID and score (i.e. the user got the same score twice), I want to select the earliest date.
To clarify, there are multiple rows which have the same userID, and may have the same score too, but I want to pull out just 1 score for each userID.
I could do this quite easily if the DISTINCT operator worked on a per column basis, but it works on the entire row instead. Is there a way to SELECT DISTINCT column, but still output other columns in those rows?
I hope this is clear, but please let me know if I've confused you.
I have a ntext column which stores rows of xml data. Ive decided that the best way to query the xml data is to Convert the ntext data into xml data type and use Sql Server 2005 builtin Xml Query tools to perform FLWOR expressions. The problem Im having is getting the ntext data Converted to xml. When I try to convert the ntext text, I of course get an error that local variables of ntext type are invalid.Any suggestions on a way I might accomplish this? Thanks, -lance

Hi, I am working on an application which accesses SQL database. I have a table complaint in which i have a coulmn 'history' of type "ntext". When i insert a value, the value gets stored in the db correctly, but I cannot access the complete data from that field using a simple select query. I had to export the table to a text file only then i could view the complete data of the field. I wrote the query in query analyzer as: "select history from complaint where pkey=142" & the result i got is: " ###### admin: Jan 8, 2007 3:53:57 PM GMT Type: Inactive (Key 10) Description: Activity yet to be started State: Planned "
This is only a part of the entire string that I had entered.
My requirement is that I need to access the data from the ntext field & save it in a variable & then display the entire data in my application. Can anyone tell me how should i use the select query so that i get the entire data without having to go thru the export data procedure. Please help!!!
Hello, I am creating triggers on th efly from stored procedure.I have table 1in db1 and table2 in db2 and i want to capture inserts ,updates and deletes in table 1 to table 2 for which triggers are getting created from SP in SQL 2000.
If i create instead of triggers then its working fine but the row will not be inserted in the main table and i need rows to be inserted in the main table. The tables is having ntext columns.Any work around for this?
I had several databases under sqlserver ce 2.0 (in my Pocket PC) which contained ntext fields. The size of the databases varies from 50,000 to 700,000 records. The size of an ntext field is from 4 bytes to 2 megabytes.
When I recreated my databases under sql server 2005 mobile on my desktop using VS2005 (see my post just under this one), I saw a big difference between the old and new database sizes. This problem was mentioned in one of the posts in this forum and the reply was to replace ntext data with ncharvar type.
Since most of my data was longer than 4000 bytes (which is the limit for nvarchar type), I couldn't use this suggestion. Instead, I changed my ntext type to image type and used a GetByte conversion.
No change! The size of the new database is still 50 % larger than the original. Since the difference is around 300 MB, this is an unacceptable thing.
Now, I either wait from somebody to suggest a new solution (apart from keeping the ntext data in a separate binary file and keep index of the records of this file in the records of sql database) or, most preferably, have

I am trying to display items from a table that have a type. For each condition there are between 7 and 10 types. I am looping through each type and displaying all items in that type. I am using DISTINCT to pull the types and count them, so I know how many there are and how times to loop. My problem is that DISTINCT is ordering the types alphabetically! I want them in the same order they went into the table. I tried adding ORDER BY primaryID, but got an error that said I also had to select primaryID as well as type, so now I am selecting every item that fits the condition and not just the DISTINCT types! Is there any way to make it order by column_position? I am using SQL 2K.
Hi all,I have a table called PTRANS with few columns (see create script below).I have created a view on top that this table VwTransaction (See below)I can now run this query without a problem:select * from dbo.VwTransactionwhereAssetNumber = '101001' andTransactionDate <= '7/1/2003'But when I create an index on the PTRANS table using the command below:CREATE INDEX IDX_PTRANS_CHL# ON PTRANS(CHL#)The same query that ran fine before, fails with the error:Server: Msg 242, Level 16, State 3, Line 1The conversion of a char data type to a datetime data type resulted inan out-of-range datetime value.I can run the same query by commeting out the AssetNumber clause and itworks fine. I can also run the query commenting out the TransactionDatecolumn and it works fine. But when I have both the conditions in theWHERE clause, it gives me this error. Dropping the index solves theproblem. Can anyone tell me why an index would cause a query to fail? Thanks a lot in advance,AmirCREATE TABLE [PTRANS] ([CHL#] [varchar] (100) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NULL ,[CHCENT] [numeric](2, 0) NOT NULL ,[CHYYMM] [numeric](4, 0) NOT NULL ,[CHDAY] [numeric](2, 0) NOT NULL ,[CHTC] [char] (2) COLLATE SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS NOT NULL) ON [PRIMARY]GOCREATE VIEW dbo.vwTransactionsASSELECT CONVERT(datetime, dbo.udf_AddDashes(REPLICATE('0', 2 -LEN(CHCENT)) + CONVERT(varchar, CHCENT) + REPLICATE('0', 4 -LEN(CHYYMM))+ CONVERT(varchar, CHYYMM) + REPLICATE('0', 2 -LEN(CHDAY)) + CONVERT(varchar, CHDAY)), 20) AS TransactionDate,CHL# AS AssetNumber,CHTC AS TransactionCodeFROM dbo.PTRANSWHERE (CHCENT <> 0) AND (CHTC <> 'RA')*** Sent via Developersdex http://www.developersdex.com ***Don't just participate in USENET...get rewarded for it!
I can populate a dataTable with type double (C#) of say '1055.01' however when I save these to the CE3.5 database using a float(CE3.5) I lose the decimal portion. The 'offending' code is:
We have some columns in a table where the date is stored as 19980101 (YYYYMMDD). The data type for this column is NUMBER(8) in Oracle.
I need to copy rows from Oracle to SQL Server using SSIS. I used the Data Conversion transformation editor to change it to DT_DATE, but the rows are not being inserted to the destination.
On Error, If I fail the component, then the error is :
There was an error with input column "ORDER_DATE_CONV" (1191) on input "OLE DB Destination Input" (29). The column status returned was: "Conversion failed because the data value overflowed the specified type.".
Using SSRS 2008 r2...I have a report with a single-value parameter and three multi-value parameters, Class1, Name2 and Name3. I'm hoping for an explanation to one thing that I'm seeing and information on a second thing.
Class1 and Name2 both have the (Select All) parameter selected but Class1 is displaying the concatenated parameter variable list whereas Name2 is showing Null. Why is that? If anything, how can I get Class1 to be similar to Name2 and show Null? But my desired wish is to have Class1, Name2 and Name3 display the text"All Selected" when the parameter (Select All) is chosen.
I have created a Transactional Replication Publication on my SQL 2012 server. When I log into another server on the domain running 2008R2 and try to subscribe to the 2012 Publication, I get the following error when clicking on "Add SQL Server Subscriber": "The selected Subscriber does not satisfy the minimum version compatibility level of the selected publication"
The 2012 DB is set as 2008 Compatibility Mode?Am I not able to Publish from 2012 to 2008?.I was using SSMS 2008 to connect to my 2012 Instance, thats why it didn't work...
I am running this query to an sql server 2000 database from my aspcode:"select * from MyTable whereMySqlServerRemoveStressFunction(MyNtextColumn) = '" &MyAdoRemoveStressFunction(MyString) & "'"The problem is that the replace function doesn't work with the ntextdatatype (so as to replace the stresses with an empty string). I hadto implement the MySqlServerRemoveStressFunction, i.e. a function thattakes a column name as a parameter and returns the text contained inthis column having replaced some letters of the text (the letters withstress). Unfortunately, I could not do that because user-definedfunctions cannot return a value of ntext. So I have the following idea:"select * from MyTable whereCheckIfTheyAreEqualIngoringTheStesses(MyNtextColum n, '" & MyString &"')"How can I implement the CheckIfTheyAreEqualIngoringTheStessesfunction? (I don't know how to combine these functions to do what Iwant: TEXTPTR, UPDATETEXT, WRITETEXT, READTEXT)
When I enter over 4000 chars in any ntext field in my SQL Server 2005 database (directly in the database and through the application) I get an error saying that the data could not be updated because string or binary data would be truncated.Has anyone ever seen this? I cannot figure out what is causing it, ntext should be able to hold a lot more data that this...
I have 4 Tablix and 2 of the Tablix get data from Server 1 and other 2 get the data from Server 2.I have set NoRowsMessage "=Data Not Available for the Selected Values"  for all the 4 Tablix. Now if data is not available from Server 1 then I must show "Data Not Available for the Selected Values" only once in the  outputbut now its appearing twice in the output because of the 2 tablix that had no rows.Similarly if data not available from Server 2 then it should show "Data Not Available for the Selected Values" only once in my output. If Data not avilable from all the Tablix then also i t should show only once as "Data Not Available for the Selected Values" in the report output.
I am wondering is there any way to select only a portion of a data set to train the mining model? In this case, I mean we dont need to split the dataset in advance, what I want to do is being able to select any random portion of a selected dataset to train a mining model. Any advices?
I am looking forward to hearing from you and thanks a lot in advance for your advices and help.
