Okay, I Thought I Had The Return Value From A Statement Figured Out...
Nov 15, 2007
So, Jimmy G helped me out with it in showing a little bit how to do it. SqlCommand command = new SqlCommand(, object>)
SqlParameter param = new SqlParameter();
param.ParameterName = "@return";
param.Direction = ParameterDirection.ReturnValue;
command.Parameters.Add(param);
command.ExecuteNonQuery();
//get the return value
int val = int.Parse(command.Parameters[0].ToString());
Where I get lost is in the declaring of a new sqlcommand and sqlparameter. Can you please spell out where to use this and if I need to change my SQLdataSource. I currently was trying to use it in the OnClick of a button. What I had did the following
Protected Sub CreateIssue_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs)
dim returnValue as integer
'how do I get a return value from the stored procedure executed in 'insertissue.insert() here to a variable?
InsertIssue.Insert()
Response.Redirect("/addarticletoissue")
End Sub
again, thank you for your help and patience with such a beginner =)

Hi all, I am trying to get batting average, which you get by dividing # hits / # at bats. However, I have to protect against divide-by-zero error. Therefore, I came up with the following:SELECT P.hits/(IsNull(NullIF(P.atbats, 0), 1)) AS Average FROM Players P However, this gives me 0 for ALL cases for some reason. Even when hits = 13 and AB = 16.Can someone please help and let me know what is wrong with my query? I cannot figure it out! :(Thanks in advance!!!!

I'm a Reporting Services New-Be.
I'm trying to create a report that's based on a SQL-2005 Stored Procedure.
I added the Report Designer, a Report dataset ( based on a shared datasource).
When I try to build the project in BIDS, I get an error. The error occurs three times, once for each parameter on the stored procedure.
I'll only reproduce one instance of the error for the sake of brevity.
[rsCompilerErrorInExpression] The Value expression for the query parameter 'UserID' contains an error : [BC30654] 'Return' statement in a Function, Get, or Operator must return a value.
I've searched on this error and it looks like it's a Visual Basic error :
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/8x403818(VS.80).aspx
My guess is that BIDS is creating some VB code behind the scenes for the report.
I can't find any other information that seems to fit this error.
The other reports in the BIDS project built successfully before I added this report, so it must be something specific to the report.
BTW, the Stored Procedure this report is based on a global temp table. The other reports do not use temp tables.
Can anyone help ?
Thanks,

Ok I have a query "SELECT ColumnNames FROM tbl1" let's say the values returned are "age,sex,race".
Now I want to be able to create an "update" statement like "UPATE tbl2 SET Col2 = age + sex + race" dynamically and execute this UPDATE statement. So, if the next select statement returns "age, sex, race, gender" then the script should create "UPDATE tbl2 SET Col2 = age + sex + race + gender" and execute it.

So I've been working on this project and I've finally gotten into the program stages. However, I've realised some things that I need to change to some of my stored procedures so that they work the way I want them to inside the program. Anyways I have this stored procedure called "Delete_Minors" and what it originally did was delete any class found in this table called MinorRequiredClasses that matched that minor and was not considered complete. I realised that this would be a bad decision to delete classes in a minor and not consider any other majors/minors a user might have that also require those classes...SO I thought I might be able to come up with a query but it doesn't seem to work. Below are the tables the query/stored procedure deals with as well as the old procedure and the new one (that I attempted to work the way i wanted it to).
Code Snippet
DECLARE @studid int
DECLARE @minorid varchar(50)

I had originally thought a full outer join would solve this, but alas I'm a roadblock. Perhaps it's because it's a Friday!
The goal is to create the most efficient query that will display results of the daily calls and sales as
this:
Date EmpID Calls Sales
7/1/2006 1 20 5
7/1/2006 2 25 7
7/1/2006 3 NULL 1
7/1/2006 4 10 NULL
The problem is a simple full outer join ends up ignoring EmpID 3 who has no Calls in t1, but I still want that row displayed in the results. Any ideas? TIA
create table t1 (Date smalldatetime, EmpID int, Calls int)
create table t2 (Date smalldatetime, EmpID int, Sales int)
insert into t1
values ('7/1/2006', 1, 20)
insert into t1
values ('7/1/2006', 2, 25)
insert into t1
values ('7/1/2006', 4, 10)
insert into t2
values ('7/1/2006', 1, 5)
insert into t2
values ('7/1/2006', 2, 7)
insert into t2
values ('7/1/2006', 3, 1)

I have a hunch this one is going to be a resounding "no", but I thought I'd try anyways.
I have a report that uses a user defined date range many, many times throughout the datasource. Ideally, I would like to pass a query declaring and setting variables and let sql server (2000) sort out the dirty work. Essentially I'm working on something that would look like this:
DECLARE @sDate AS DATETIME
DECLARE @eDate AS DATETIME
SET @sDate = 'this string gets constructed during the On Open event of a report
SET @eDate = 'same thing here
SELECT lotsOfStuff, (SELECT oneOfManySubSelects FROM t2 WHERE t2.field BETWEEN @sDate AND @eDate)
FROM somewhere
WHERE somefield BETWEEN @sDate AND @eDate
I have some five subselects that are dependent on this daterange. I can construct the entire string purely in VB, but it's messy and rather tedious. Ideally I'd like to set the variable ONCE at runtime and be done with it. This way, I keep a full record source that calls @sDate and @eDate. Then I simply set the variables and insert them before the query.
The problem is Access doesn't seem to know how to pass the query without trying to parse the variables itself. So it gets mad that @sDate and @eDate haven't been defined for each occurance. I'm looking for a way to make access ignore the fact that there are variables in the query, and pass it as-is to the sql server.
Thoughts?

I assume that MS has a directive never to change the format of SSIS raw files...
However, what I'd like to know is that when I'm planning long-term systems where I've got backups of data (staging, logging, whatever) using raw files, can I be assured that future versions of SSIS will be able to read those raw files?
I assume a certain level of backwards compatibility, however, I'm just curious if I should think about building processes into my projects that would factor that in and rebuild raw files everytime a new/major release of SSIS comes out.

During the production hours there are no problems but at night when I run DBCC DBREINDEX, the log grows to 22GB and because of this I have a problem sending this over the network to the stand by server.
I tried changing the recovery model to Bulk_Logged but the there is no difference in log file backup size.

It is my understanding that Views cannot have parameters. Also thatstored procedures can not be queried. My problem is this:I want to select the rows that match a certain parameter.From that I want to select the most current 20 rows (there is a datefield).From that I want to select the lowest 10 rows based on a numericfield.Finally I want that to be input to a report and some calculations.What this basically is the selection for USGA Golf Handicap Index. Itis the most current 20 rounds of golf by a golfer, then the best 10 ofthose 20 and then finally the calculation.Any help would be appreciated.

Hi
I have a table which has the column [itemNumber] Which contains numbers from 000 to 999. I have another table which has the UPC data for given items
I am trying to get results from my query that will show me every number in the itemNumberSet table that does not already exist (in the substring) of the UPCcode column.
By using the query below i am able to retrieve the opposite, and it works by returning results that do exist in the UPCcode column. But I cannot seem to get it to do the opposite which is what i am after. I figured it would be as simple as using NOT IN but that returned 0 results.
SELECT itemNumber FROM itemNumberSet
WHERE itemNumber IN (select SUBSTRING(UPCcode, 9, 3) FROM itemUPCtable)
ORDER BY itemNumber
Thanks for any suggestions you might have.

Hi @ all
I'm using MSSQL and PHP.
I've got the following sql statement:
$msquery = IF NOT EXISTS (SELECT SerienNr FROM tbl_Auftrag a WHERE a.SerienNr='PC8') INSERT INTO tbl_Auftrag (BMS_AuftragsNr, SerienNr, AuftraggNr, Zieltermin, Kd_Name) VALUES ('455476567','PC8','1','2006-3-2','Fritz')
The Statement itself works fine, but i've got a problem getting a return value whether the insert has succeed, or not. :confused:
mssql_query() always returns true if there occured no error in the statement. But i need to know if the insert procedded or not.
I tried:
$result = mssql_query($msquery);
$succeed = mssql_rows_affected ($result);
And:
$result = mssql_query($msquery);
$succeed = mssql_num_rows($result);
to get the rows, affected by the statement, but both return:
supplied argument is not a valid MS SQL-Link resource
Anyone an idea?

Hi there, I hope you can help us.
We're using this statement to import some values into a database:
SQLStatement = "INSERT MyTable (ID, VALUE) VALUES ('" & IDString & "', '" & VALUEString & "')"
The problem is that the strings might contain carriage returns/line feeds, i.e.
VALUEString = "Line 1." & vbCrLf & "Line 2."
It only imports up until the first vbCrLf. We have tried replacing vbCrLf with "", but this doesn't work either. What is the correct format for inserting a value that contains new line characters?
Thanks for your time,
Lasse.

author_display_name, category_id, category_name
HAVING article_id = @article_id
END

as you can see, im trying to return a comment_count value, but the only way I can do this is by defining the variable.
I have had to do it this way, because I cannot say COUNT(comment.comment_id) AS comment_count or it returns an error that it cant reference the comment.comment_id.
But when change it to FROM article, comment; I get errors about the article_author_id and article_comment_id.
And i cant add a join, because it would return the amount of rows of the comment...
unless someone could help with what i Just decribed (as i would prefer to do it this way), how would i return the variable value as part of the select statement?
Cheers

I'm trying to migrate to the 2005 JDBC driver against SQL Server 2000, but I'm getting the following exception: com.microsoft.sqlserver.jdbc.SQLServerException: The statement did not return a result set. This is similar problem to a past thread: http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=413019&SiteID=1
The difference is that my stored procedure uses cursors. This same stored procedure works fine with the 2000 JDBC driver.
Does anybody have any ideas how to resolve this problem?

I have concatenated a long Select Statement and assigned it to a variable. (i.e.)
@a = Select * from foo ---Obviously mine is much more robust
How do I execute @a to actually Select * from foo?

Hey guys,
This is what I think and hope is a fairly straight forward SQL question
Essentially, I have a table which has the following columns that are relevent to my question:
PROJID
ACTIVITY_NAME
COMPLETION_DATE
Rows in this table are, for example:
PROJID ACTIVITY_NAME COMPLETION_DATE
1 Prepro 10/12/2007 3:42:30
2 Prepro 10/13/2007 9:16:27
2 QA 10/13/2007 10:00:01
2 Delivery 10/14/2007 09:31:12
etc.
So, really the key is the PROJID & the ACTIVITY_NAME (really, there's a unique column ID, but for this question, I'll leave it at that).
(Though this should be much easier to accomplish in code, the system is not built that way so) Is there a good way that I could return a status for a given PROJID based on whether a row exists for a given PROJID). In other words, ultimately, I would like to return something like this:
PROJID LAST_ACTIVITY
----------------------------------------------
1 Prepro
2 Delivery
where the activity order (in this case) is Prepro, QA, Delivery. So because a Delivery row exists for PROJID 2, then the LAST_ACTIVITY would return "Delivery" and because only Prepro exists for PROJID 1, the LAST_ACTIVITY returned would be Prepro
I really appreciate the help
Thanks,
Steve

If I try to run the code below, and even one of the values in the INNER
JOIN statements is NULL, the DataReader ends up with zero rows.
What I need is to see the results even if one or more of INNER JOIN
statements has a NULL value. For example, if I want info on
asset# 2104, and there's no value in the DriverID field, I need the
rest of the data to display and just have the lblDriverName by
blank. Is that possible?
