Overwriting An Existing Database With One That Is Populated With Data
Jan 21, 2008
I am tring to figure out how to simplify the process of populating a database created by an application with the same database, only with data already in it. So far i have created a backup of the database and used that backup file with SQL server management express to overwrite the existing database with that backup file on a new computer so the program will have data when initally installed for Demonstration purposes. I was hoping there was an executable script that i could use, so that when someone wants a demonstration of our product, they can see its options and functionallity with data available. Maby i am going about this the wrong way, i need to know if there is a way that when our program is installed an executable can simply be run to populate our database with a backup of our sample database. Any imput would be helpful.
Thanks.

i have 2 tables (both containing the same column names/datatypes), say table1 and table2.. table1 is the most recent, but some rows were deleted on accident.. table2 was a backup that has all the data we need, but some of it is old, so what i want to do is overwrrite the rows in table 2 that also exist in table 1 with the table 1 rows, but the rows in table 2 that do not exist in table one, leave those as is.. both tables have a primary key, user_id.
I am very new to SQL, but I am now receiving a updates on a database from an online HD. My idea was that I could download the updated database and paste over the existing database in my SQL folder. For some reason that is not working. How should this database be updated. I would prefer not to have to drop and add everyday.
Possibly I could make a database that is not in any folder and then make an update to it from the newly recieved database, but I am not sure how that would be done.
I'm trying to create installer that installs database from empty backed up database. The SQL script executed by installer:
RESTORE DATABASE [DU] FROM DISK = N'$TARGETDIR$DuTempDU.bak' WITH FILE = 1, MOVE N'DU' TO N'$DATABASE_DIR$DU.mdf', MOVE N'DU_log' TO N'$DATABASE_DIR$DU_log.ldf', NOUNLOAD, STATS = 10 GO
There $TARGETDIR$ and $DATABASE_DIR$ are MSI variables set on runtime. The REPLACE flag is not set, but DU database (non empty )still gets overwritten with empty database. Do I need to check manually if database exists before trying to restore it?
I have a data dictionary report that is driven by measure and dimension description attributes in the SSAS project. Is there a way to generate some XMLA or something that allows me to update this "metadata" only without overwriting the database or requiring a full reprocess?
I'm using RS2000 SP2 and am getting an issue when exporting to PDF. If I have a table that spans more than one page and I set the RepeatHeaderOnNewPage to True, then on occasion the table header will be displayed on top of the first few rows of data. It does not happen on all the pages or all the time and I can not find any information on this issue. Has anyone come across this before and solved it?
However, the first three columns are not being populated in the destination table. The other columns come over fine.
The SQL stmt. returns data as expected when run against the source database.
I deleted the source and destination and recreated the flow to prevent metadata mapping issues. In the source editor preview I see all of the columns and data. In the destination editor preview, the first three columns of data are null ???.
It appears that the columns are not mapping properly even though they are in the source and destination of the mapping editor.
I have made sure that the destination mapping contains all the columns in the UI.
The source and destination have the columns represented in the advanced editor metedata. I also checked the XML to verify that the columns are in the destination.
There is a row count between the source and destination. which should have no effect.
This is a part of a larger DW load where I have 10 other tables populated within the dataflow. I also do not get any validation, or error messages. So, I have eliminated truncation errors or the like.
I am really puzzled. Has anyone run accross anything like this?
I would like to restore database using RESTORE DATABASE ... REPLACE command. If database exists already and has any open connections this command will fail. I would like to close all existing connections to specific database before running RESTORE DATABASE ... REPLACE command. I can do closing from Management Studio using checkbox "Close Existing Connection" when deleting database. Actually I need to do the same but from script.
writing a T_SQL query for the following scenario..I have a SQL DB Audit file that gets populated with data as the activity on DB goes on.I have multiple monthly tables setup that the import should go into these monthly tables based on the event_time value in the SQL DB Audit file.all the data Like event_time '2015-08-25 15:59:39.033' should go to SQL table Audit_tbl_Aug2015 Query for reading SQLDB Audit file
SELECT * FROM sys.fn_get_audit_file ('C:ackupAudit*',default, default) order by event_time desc GO --DML for Audit table CREATE TABLE [dbo].[Audit_tbl_Aug2015]( [id] [bigint] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL, [event_time] [datetime2](7) NOT NULL, [sequence_number] [int] NULL, [action_id] [varchar](4) NULL, [succeeded] [bit] NOT NULL, [permission_bitmask] [bigint] NOT NULL, [is_column_permission] [bit] NOT NULL, [session_id] [smallint] NOT NULL, [server_principal_id] [int] NULL, [database_principal_id] [int]
I need to recover some data in a table but i'm not 100% sure the right way to do this safely.
I'll need to query the two tables to compare the before and after but how do i go about restoring/attaching the backup database to SQL without causing conflicts?
If I restore, I assume this would just overwrite which is obviously the worst thing that can happen. if i attach the backup, how does this affect the current live DB? how do i make sure that it's not getting accessed and mistaken for the live DB?
As per attachment, i have been created replications but in local subscription it is not populated any thing at the same time, Subscription database has been created but tables is not populated as per publication table.
How do I insert data from a flat file or .csv file into an existing SQL database???
Here what I've come up with thus far and I but it doesn't work. Can someone please help? Let me know if there is a better way to do this... Idealy I'd like to write straight to the sql database and skip the datset all together...

I want to load data that i receive everydays from my customers in .xls file format (excel) or cvs file format, to the database that i have created on this purpose. but when trying to do that whith SSIS; i got an error message .... that i can't import redudant data in my database column.
Hi, I have a small web application managing complaints. During multiuser testing we noticed that when complaints where added at "exactly" the same time one complaint text seemed to be over writing the other, and returning the current max value for table id as current complaint number.
I tested in my development environment and was able to recreate reasonably easily ( 1 go out of 3 recreated the issue ). The Id column itself is an auto increment ( primary key ), so I can't think of a concievable reason why one record should overwrite another. I should say that I am assuming the record is overwritten, perhaps there is a clash and one complaint is ignored by the database.
To insert entries into a table. The table has a primary key based on a field 'ID'. When inserting into the destination table, I want to make sure that the new entry will overwrite the old entry.
When I create a db backup on our network using BACKUP DATABASE...
BACKUP DATABASE [TKKCommonData] TO DISK = N'G:SQL_BACKUPSTKKCommonDataTKKCommonData_DATA.bak' WITH NOFORMAT, NOINIT, NAME = N'TKKCommonData_DATA-Full Database Backup', SKIP, NOREWIND, NOUNLOAD, STATS = 10
I've specified the NOINIT so that it appends rather than overwrites the database, however the database is still overwritten. Any idea how to get the database to backup and append to the set rather than overwrite the backup ?
I created a package which runs everydays and dumps the data into an excel file. The problem iam facing is that -today the package runs and fills in the excel file, tomorrow it again runs and fills in the data without deleting the previous records....... But i want it to delete the records already present and fill in the excel only with the new records...
I want to restore a database (from an encrypted .bak file) - but *not* over the live original if you take my meaning. Encryption is the standard AES-256 that comes with Sql Server 2014 btw. I don't want the original touched/altered in any way. I would like to capture a success message if possible.I can extract the physical device name of the database in question using the following code:
SELECT physical_device_name, * FROM msdb.dbo.backupmediafamily WHERE media_set_id =(SELECT TOP 1 media_set_id FROM msdb.dbo.backupset WHERE database_name='MyDatabase' AND type='D' ORDER BY backup_start_date DESC)
I would like if the newly restored database was rename to something different than 'MyDatabase' (as shown above) and has different logs than the original. If possible, and capture a success message when restored.
Hi, My server went dead(problems with the hard disk), but I have a copy of the whole sql server directory including the database in a external hard disk. I have a new server now and I would like to copy this database (with the reports from reporting services too) from the external hard disk to my new server. can anybody help me please? Thanks.
Note : I have a plain copy of all the sql server directory with all the files including the database not a SQLServer backup done with the wizards.
I've been assigned the task of setting up access to our SQL Server 2005 box. A consultant developing for us has accessing to 2 databases and I've set this up fine. It appears however that one of these databases is re-copied over to the server every night to keep data reasonably current.
I'm not interesting in changing this method as I'm not the maintainer (as yet).
Basically I would like to know if I've setup access to this database (it works fine), when the database is updated (with an SSIS package) the account seems to get deleted. Do the original permissions from the source database overwrite those of its destination?
I am new to sql and my boss want me to write the program for database and he wants to pull the info from existing table from sql server which is used by Microsoft GP Dynamics and write me code or some kind of front end so when he wants he can pull same data from GP dynamics table and generate some report with other custom table.
How i can do this task? What I have to do in sql so I can use same table to view info in real time so that means if i enter new data in the table it will show up same time in the front end as well.
We have one package in production. variable var_date has an expression already defined to it. How can we overwrite this variable value from config file or from cmd file. We don't want to make changes to the package and redeploy it.
here is the situation. I have a DB on one system. I back it up and then restore it to a second system. This second system I run reports off of and I want to create custom views that do not exist on the original system. Can I restore the backup DB from the remote system without wiping out the custom views on the local system?
I have to do this this way as they won't let us create the views we want on the remote system so the only way we have access to run the reports is by restoring the backup locally.
I have a problem when i restore my .DAT_BAK file. I am getting error like "The backup set holds a backup of a database other than existing database. Restore Database is terminating abnormally".
I tried by using
RESTORE DATABASE <DATABASENAME> FROM DISK = 'D:DATAMYTEST.DAT_BAK' WITH MOVE 'VZAI_DATA' TO D:PROGRAM FILES..MSSQLTEST.MDF', MOVE 'VZAI_LOG' TO D:PROGRAM FILES..MSSQLTEST.LDF', REPLACE
And also i tried like
RESTORE DATABASE <DATABASENAME> FROM DISK = 'D:DATAMYTEST.DAT_BAK'
WITH REPLACE
When i use like this,
RESTORE FILELISTONLY FROM DISK = 'D:DATAMYTEST.DAT_BAK'. I am able to get the output as LogicalName, PhysicalName, Type, FileGroupName, Size, etc.
I have a package which loads data from a flat file (csv) to 4 tables in a database. Now, the load is incremental.
I want to clear the data of all 4 tables(in the database) before loading the data from flat file everytime. How can i do this? Iam using 4 Oledb Destinations, 1 multicast, 1 source component to do this. Also can it happen like a transaction? because if it deletes the existing data and couldnt load new data there will be a problem!.how to avoid this?
I have a database with literally hundereds of tables in it. Can anyone advise me of how to tell which ones are populated with data and which ones arent?
I ran the code below in QA, and @@ERROR never gets populated with any error code, despite the fact that an error occured. This event is very misleading and errors are never caught. Any advice greatly appreciated.
-- Create the table create table test_table ( test_field int )
-- Execute the code DECLARE @err_status int, @row_count int insert into test_table ( test_field ) values ( 'TEST STRING' ) select @err_status = @@ERROR, @row_count = @@ROWCOUNT
IF @err_status <> 0 PRINT @err_status
-- Results: Server: Msg 245, Level 16, State 1, Line 1 Syntax error converting the varchar value 'TEST STRING' to a column of data type int.
I went to look at the connection string previously entered for a dataset created in a new report, and am not seeing anything intuitive for bringing up the associated datasource dialog box that was used to enter name, type and connection string. I'm also noticing nothing intuitive for deleting an existing dataset. How do you do these two very simple things in an existing project? I dont see the dataset in solution explorer, I see it only in the text box on the data tab and in a limited kind of way on the dataset view where the columns show and maint is allowed mostly on the columns only. I tried hilighting the dataset here and hitting the delete key to no avail.
