Partition Tables In Sql 2005

I am trying to implement paritioned tables in SQL 2005. So far, I am successfull implementing partioned tables
using filegroups. I have created three filegroups and partitioning table in those three file groups using PARTITION FUNCTION,PARTITION SCHEME and I am successfully partitioned table on my local machine .
But now I need to implement a partitioned tables residing on multiple machines. Would anyone help me for this topic?
I am using filegroups to partitioning table. Is there any way to partition tables across multiple database servers
without using filegroups?

Dec 17, 2007I want to find a way to get partition info for all the tables in all the databases for a server. Showing database name, table name, schema name, partition by (maybe; year, month, day, number, alpha), column used in partition, current active partition, last partition (for date partitions I want to know if the partition goes untill 2007, so I can add 2008)
all I've come up with so far is:

Aug 4, 2004Hi, I've just got my brand new shiny SQLServer and would like to set some new tables set up etc. But I'm really lazy and I was wondering if there is any way of importing table layouts, coulmns, whole structure type thing into SQLServer from Microsoft Access using DTS? I know it's a bit optimistic, but just wondered....

Nov 9, 2005I have to copy a large (3000) amount of different tables from a Oracle machine into an
SQLServer machine.
I am able to do this using a (VB) script.
I use now several methods:
1) INSERT INTO TABLE1 SELECT * FROM SID1..DB.TABLE1 (SID1 is a linked server)
2) INSERT INTO TABLE1 SELECT * FROM OPENQUERY(SID1,'SELECT * FROM DB.TABLE1')
3) Also used OPENROWSET method (similar to 2)
For small tables this is fine, however for BIG tables (15M Rows/150Cols) the methods above are too slow.
If I compare the same copy action with a simple DTS, the DTS is 3 times faster.
Also, the DTS seems to bulk copy the data directly into the desired database while the
mentioned methods first fill the tempdb, then the transaction log of the desired database and
then finally the desired table (need very much extra space on your filesystem).
The total size of data is about 300GB.
Can anyone supply me with a simple example how to copy data from an Oracle table into a
SQLServer table in script (or SQL) that is as fast as the DTS and not filling my logfiles??
I read the bcp (which I use for import/export files) and bulk insert commands, but
I do not understand how to use them in this question.

I am new to SQL Server 2005 SSIS Packages. I want to transfer data from multiple tables from sql server to oracle database. I cannot use export wizard as it creates new tables in the destination (oracle) DB. I already have tables created in the destination DB. When I created an SSIS package, it allowed me create package to tranfer data for only for one table from source to destination. I have created DTS packages in 2000, where you have source db and destination db and just add links for multiple tables. Is there a way I can do it in SSIS. Please let me know.

May 10, 2007We have a static class that makes an HTTPWebRequest to get XML data from one of our vendors. We use this as input to a stored proc in SQLServer2005. When I compile this class and call it from a console application in visual studio it executes in milliseconds, everytime. When I compile it, create the assembly and clr function and execute it in SQLServer, it takes around 14 seconds to execute the first time, then on subsequent requests it is again really fast, until I wait for 10 seconds and re-execute, once again it is slow the first time and then fast on subsequent requests. We do not see this behavior when executing outside SQLServer. Makes me think that some sort of authentication is perhaps taking place the first time the function is run in SQLServer? I have no idea how to debug this further. Anyone seen this before or have any ideas?

When I execute the function as above, again, really slow the first time, then fast on subsequent calls. Could there be something wrong with the code, or some headers that need to be set differently to operate from the CLR in SQLServer?

I have a problem with unicode character 0x2300
I created this table
create table testunicode (Bez nchar(128))
Insert Data
insert into testunicode (Bez)values('Œ€„¢')
with 2 Unicode characters
Œ€ = 0x2300
„¢ = 0x2122
Selecting the data
select Bez from testunicode
I see
"?„¢"
„¢ = 0x2122 is ok but instead of 0x2300 there is 0x3f
When I modify the insert statement like that ( 8960 = 0x2300 )
insert into testunicode (Bez)values(NCHAR(8960)+'„¢')
and select again voila i see
"Œ€„¢"
Does anyone have an idea?

Trying To 'load' A Copy Of A SQLServer 2000 Database To SQLServer 2005 Express

I am trying to 'load' a copy of a SQLServer 2000 database to SQLServer 2005 Express (on another host). The copy was provided by someone else - it came to me as a MDF file only, no LDF file.
I have tried to Attach the database and it fails with a failure to load the LDF. Is there any way to bypass this issue without the LDF or do I have to have that?
The provider of the database says I can create a new database and just point to the MDF as the data source but I can't seem to find a way to do that? I am using SQL Server Management Studio Express.

Jun 14, 2006I have an app that uses a sqlserver 2000 jdbc driver to connect to a sqlserver 2000.
Is it possible to do a direct replacement of sqlserver 2000 with sqlserver 2005 express just by reconfiguring the app to point to the express? The app would still be using the sqlserver 2000 jdbc driver to try and make the connection.
If that is a possibility, what can be some differences in the configuration? Previously with 2000 the config information I entered is:
server name: "machinename"( or ip). I've also tried "machiname/SQLEXPRESS"
DB name: name of db instance
port: 1433(default)
user and pass.
My attempts so far results in
"java.sql.SQLException: [Microsoft][SQLServer 2000 Driver for JDBC]Error establishing socket."
and

I am in the process of planning a server upgrade to sql2005 x64.
I created 2 linked servers: one to a SQL2000 sp4 server and one to a SQL7.0 SP3.
I have the following error when I query the linked servers.
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "IVDM2K" returned message "Unspecified error".
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "IVDM2K" returned message "The stored procedure required to complete this operation could not be found on the server. Please contact your system administrator.".
Msg 7311, Level 16, State 2, Line 1
Cannot obtain the schema rowset "DBSCHEMA_TABLES_INFO" for OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "IVDM2K". The provider supports the interface, but returns a failure code when it is used.
I am aware of KB 906954.

I applied the instcat.sql on the SQL2000SP4 server and my linked server issues for that one are gone.
However, I ran the instcat.sql script on the SQL7.0 sp3 server and the linked server is still giving me an issue.

Now I want to use parameter so I only importing record within range (e.g. ShiftDate BETWEEN 05-24-2006 AND 06-23-2006)
In SQLServer, I have created table to store the date range as following:

How do I use the date range from TblParameter(SQLServer) to import record from TblShift(Access) using DTS?

I am new to SQL Server 2005. I tried connecting to my local machine by using my machine name as Server name and then tried running the following query:
SELECT * FROM SYS.Objects. It gives me following error:
Invalid object name 'sys.objects'.
Whereas, if I connect to my local machine using mahcinenameSQLEXPRESS, then the above mentioned query runs fine.
Why is this difference? What is the difference when I login in these 2 different ways.

table1 is partitioned on u_id by tens,
first partion u_id=0 to 9
second partion u_id=10 to 19
third partion u_id=20 to 29
ans so on and so forth
i have a table named table2 with
records having u_id = 13 to 16
obviously belonging to the second partion.
i want to load table2 to table1 as fast as i could with
the following requirements:
all contents of partition 2 of table1 must be deleted before loading
table2 ceases to exist after the operation
how will i do that.

Partition On Value
Feb 9, 2006I can see lot of documentation on Range Partitioning. Is there any other type of partition supported in SQL Server 2005?
For example, I have a Fact table having Billion rows. It has a column called BATCH_ID. A BATCH_ID corresponds to 10-20 Million rows and it is a running sequence number like 1,2,3 etc. (not an identity column). Is there anyway I can specify a partition function with BATCH_ID column as an int value? Will the SQL Server automatically does the partition on each int value in that case? If not, what is the best way to do it?

Os Partition Problems

I recently installed MSSQL 2000 and sp3a onto a windows 2003 server in a test lab. I configured one big c: partion on this os and installed the db in the default location.
I need to detach the db's on this server and re-attach them onto another MSSQL 2000/sp3a server running 2003 os with a partition scheme like this:
c: = 20 gigs for the os
e: = 600 gigs for the data
I could not re-attach the db's onto the e:default path odatabase
Is there a work-around for this? This makes sense to me as to why it is not working and was an install oversight on my part but there has to be a way to overcome this delima?

Alternative To PARTITION BY
May 21, 2008I have a situation where my SQL works everywhere else but my COBOL compiler complains wherever I use PARTITION BY. I can't find a workaround for that problem so I would like to remove all the PARTITION BYs. I'm not confident that I can do this accurately and would like some help getting started.
Here is my simplest example:

I have names in the database which I want partition by last name - for example last names starting with A, B, C, D should go to the file group 1. last names starting with E, F, G, H should go to file group 2.
I am trying to use the following function - but do I specify in the function that last names with with A, B, C, D should go to the file group 1
