View 1 RepliesI can't paste text (directly into table row via enterprise manager) into a varchar (5000) field, truncates after about 960 char. Length of string trying to paste is about 1400 characters including spaces. No special characters (one apostrophe). Error happens intermittently.

l've the following situation,
l've some excel files controlled by Vendor which changing frequently. The only thing does not change is the header name of each column.
So my question is, is there any way to create a new table based on the excel file selected including the column name in SSIS? So that l can use the data reader as source to select those columns l am interested on and start the integration.
Thanks.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm having some trouble with import data from an excel document to a table. The scenario is as follows:
The excel document has two columns A and B. Col A has to be copied into the table (table has 3 columns Col 1 - Primay key with autoincrement feature, Col 2 - is Col A from the Excel document, Col 3 - irrelevant)
Depending on Col B from excel doc the corresponding Col A data should be copied to the table. I tired using a DTS pacakage to do this but it complains becuase Col 1 (table) gets a valus of NULL for every value in Col A. I mapped only Col A to Col 2 in the Transformaton tab.
Any ideas? Seems like a simple job?!?
Thanks for any input
Hi,
I am trying to import data from a table with huge volume (more than 70000 records) to a Excel file. THe problem, because of the limitation on the number of rows (which is somewhere around 65000), I am unable to do a full import..Can you suggest a method thru which additional rows (i.e. rows beyond the limit on excel) can be ported to the next sheet in the same workbook? thanks in advance
Hi all,
I'm trying to import around 4000 rows of data into SQL from an Excel spreadsheet. I thought I might be able to simply copy and paste into SQL Server (Tables > Right click on table > Open Table), but when I try this only one value is pasted in. There's only around eight columns and I've been trying to do each seperately but to no avail.
Can anyone suggest a means importing this data (as a whole, or in , either through some simple copy and paste function, or through some code?
TIA,
SamuelT
Hi
We have some reports that are published as PDF files. The layout of the report is fairly free, using lists within lists.
Some of our users want to cut and paste some of the data. When they do so, the order and layout of the fields does not resemble the layout of the report. Any way around this.
Note that when the report is published as mhtml or excel, cutting and pasting from these formats is much better.
thanks
Peter
I'm using Microsoft SQL 2005.
I am attempting to store text in a column defined as varchar(2048). The text contains line feed and carriage return characters. After examining the database column the text is truncated after the first set of line feed and carriage return characters.
Is there a way to force SQL Server to store these characters?
Much Thanks, Robert

View 6 Replies View RelatedHi I'm new to SQL server.
What I'm trying to do is to automate the import of data from an Excel spreadsheet to a table within SQL Server.
The index of the table has a seed set to increment by 1 and I assume that this is the same as the Autonum datatype in Access.
When I import data I miss out this field as it is autogenerated, but the DTS package fails as it is trying to put a NULL in to this field.
Where am I going wrong....is there something that I should change on the DTS import?
Hey folks,
My first post and I hope not my last!!
I am very new to the entire world SQL Server databases. I am starting from scratch.
Currently I have a little Website I am doing for myself that is .asp based and will allow users to query some sports boxscores. I hope to create a user interface that will allow folks to seperate team results based on certain criteria...
It is just a hobby of mine that I have been doing for year with excel and now hope to let others like me do it aswell.
here is what I got.
MSSQL 2005 Server with a database.
Iam using SQL 2005 Server Express Studio. Therefore, do not have access to SSIS or DTS or anything like that.
However, I want to import several hundred records into a db I created (hosted by Crystal tech). Since, I don't have access to the Server root directory, I can't use the BULK INSERT statement.
I am looking for a method to query an excel file (or .csv something..) that is stored on my local drive and upload it to the Server db tables.
I would like to do this either through SQL with a query. Or I would to add this VB code to the current VB that I use in my Excel file.
any ideas..??
Thank you for supporting me in advance.
Hi!
I have to develop an application for transfering data from an excel file into a sql table. The excel file is uploaded to a server. The database(and the table) is on another server. At first,I used openrowset for transferring data to the table. My sql command looked like this(in my asp page):
SQLstr = "SELECT * INTO dbo.shopping_TSR FROM OPENROWSET('Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0', 'Excel 8.0;Database="+Server.MapPath("upload/tmb2.xls")+";hdr=yes', 'SELECT * FROM [Sheet1$]')"
I kept getting this error:
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][SQL Server]OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0'IDBInitialize::Initialize returned 0x80004005: The provider did not give any information about the error.]
After reading a few articles,I think the cause of my error is that the excel file is uploaded into the folder where the asp script is located.I have 2 servers : one running the asp scripts and one containing the database.
Is my error generated by the fact that the excel file is on a different server than the sql server? How could I make this work?
i have a table in sql 2000 db and want to import data from excel sheet in to the table.

I am using the import wizard in SQL Server 2008 R to import data from an Excel spreadsheet into a table I have created.
The spreadsheet contains 3 columns that SQL recognises as DOUBLE and they contain a 1 or 0. What data type do the corresponding fields in SQL table need to be? I have tried BIT, INT and FLOAT but keep getting an error (can't view details of the error because I get chucked out every time the error pops up). I know the problem is with the DOUBLE data because when I 'ignore' those columns the import works fine.
I need to make a script in SQL 2005 to import data from an Excel sheet into a SQL table.
I am using the wizard to import now.
Import from Excel 2000. First row of the excel sheet has column names.
Excel file name is: EXL.xls, sheet name is: Sheet1
Destination sql database name is: NM, table name is: Sht1
I use SQL Server Authentication to access the database.
User name: ABC and password: DEF
Database name is: DB
I am using the following setting when importing now:
- Delete rows in destination table
- Enable identity insert
Hi,
I need to import data from more than 10 excels having the same format in to a single sql server table.
I tried to use
INSERT INTO MyTempTable
SELECT * FROM OPENROWSET('Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0',
'Excel 11.0;Database=C:Book1.xls', [Sheet1$])
but got the below error
Ad hoc access to OLE DB provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' has been denied. You must access this provider through a linked server.
If DTS package is used then I am not sure how I can place 10 excels at a time so that they can be picked one by one and data is imported in to table.
Please help.
Thanks,
Vimalraj

I have installed SQL Server Managemert Server Express .... I am wondering how to import data from an excel spreadsheet?
.. Silent Running
Previous to 2012, grid results from SSMS queries pasted into Excel beautifully and were easy to format.in 2008, The results from this query pasted into a spreadsheet with the query contained in a single Excel cell:
(sample - not the whole script)
select top 300
Avg_CPU_Time
,Total_Physical_Reads
,convert(datetime,Last_execution_time) as Timestamp
,Stored_Procedure
,Query_text
from dbadmin.dbo.History_CPU_IO_ByQueryAndSP
This was wonderful. I could deliver to developers wonderfully tidy reports on query resource usage with timestamps along with which stored procedure the queries came from.
Can't do that in SSMS 2012. Try it. It's a disaster. The Query_text, when pasted, spreads across multiple Excel columns, including the ones designated for other data. The result is totally unreadable.how to make the query_text stay in it's own cell? I've tried converting query_text to varchar and ntext. Same results.

I need to export data from a table of SQL server 2000 database, into an Excel 2000 sheet. I tried following query from the sql query analyzer
Code SnippetSELECT * INTO [Excel 4.0;Database=F:ew.xls].[sheet1] FROM tab1
It gave me following error
Code SnippetServer: Msg 2760, Level 16, State 1, Line 1
Specified owner name 'Excel 4.0;Database=F:ew.xls' either does not exist or you do not have permission to use it.
The F:ew.xls file is present and it has no additional security applied, hence I think it should be writable.
Please tell me where am I doing wrong.
I don't know if this is the correct news group or not. Let me know if I have to post to some other news group.
