Weird. I have an Agent job that populates some warehouse data every night. It's been working fine for over a year. Then it fails with a message that thePRIMARY file group is full. The database is set to Simple recovery, automatic, unrestricted growth by 10% for both the log file and the data file. The drive it's on has 96GB free. The data file is 1.5GB and the log is 2MB and there's not very much fluctuation in the amoutn of data going into it.
Anybody have an idea why that would happen?
Thanks for any insight,Pete

Customer site has detached their database and deleted the .ldf file and reattached because they want to decrease the log file size. They set their log size to restricted file growth and 5mb. After about 20 minutes they started getting "Transaction log is full" so I had them up the transaction log to 50mb. After about another 20 mins everyone on the network started getting errors saying that data cannot be added because the PRIMARY file group was full ("Could not allocate space for object TrussLumber in Database ATP because the primary file group is full").
There is plenty of disk space so I know thats not the problem. And they can add data to other databases, so I cant imagine what could possibly be causing this....Can anyone help me out?
Thanks!

Why shrinkfile empty file does not redistribute data evenly in the primary file group with multiple files:
Please run the script attached to see what the end result is.
This is what I set up last night on my test machine.
1) Create database [FGTest] size 200MB
2) Create table called TEST on primary
3) Insert 40MB of data into test
4) Create another file group called temp in primary size 200MB
5) Shrinkfile('FGTest',emptyfile) so that all data is transfered from FGTest into temp file group.
6) Add another 2 files called DATA2 and DATA3. Both are 200MB.
7) We now have 3 empty files that I want data distributed evenly on. FGTest, DATA2 & DATA3
8) Shrinkfile('temp',emptyfile) to move all the data from temp over the 3 file groups evenly
I would expect at this stage to have the following:
FGTest = 13MB,
DATA2 = 13MB,
DATA3 = 13MB
(40MB of data over 3 files should be about 13 MBish in each file)
What I actually end up with is this:
FGTest = 20MB
DATA1 = 10MB
DATA2 = 10MB
It looks as though SQL Server is allocating 50% of all data to the original file and then 50% evenly over
the remaining files in PRIMARY.

A little background on what I am trying to achieve first. We are moving to Azure virtual machines and we will have 8 disks on the SQL Server box. I am adding more files to the primary file group and each file will go on its own drive. I am then rebalancing data across these files by rebuilding all of the indexes on the tables which is working fine. No problems so far all is good.
I now have an additional problem. If there is a lob or blob column on the table, rebuilding the clustered index and all the non clustered indexes doesn't rebalance the blob or lob data across the disks such as it does with in row data.
I cannot find any articles on rebalancing lob or blob data because all the articles say to move to a new file group. I do not want a new file group, I just want to use the primary file group where the data already resides, and just redistribute it evenly in the same way that I can in row data which is working fine.
One solution I thought about was to BCP data out of the table, truncate the table and then BCP back into the table which I imagine would have the desired effect of distributing the data evenly over the files.

We set the database to : automatically grow file, unstricted file growth, grow by 10%.
As I understand it will automatically grow, why we recieved error message like primary file full.

I have a database around 500 GB. right now the database have only one data file and one log, it has only one filegroup also.all the indexes and table are placed in Primary Filegroup . we are going to separate them. the planing is to move all the indexes to Secondary filegroup and all the table will be in Primary filegroup.But there will be a problem while implementing it because there are around 600 tables and each table have at least 2 non-clustered index , so is there any way to move all the index to Secondary Filegroup.

For a database, we have 4 data files in a particular file group and the file sizes are almost 70 GB each.
Do I come across any performance issues if I create/pre-allocate an additional data file in the same file group so that the existing files don't grow too much?

Hi Everone,
I need help on how to produce a SQL Server Database Primary Data File, i have read the Visual C# 2006 book by Deitel and Deitel unfortunately the book does not say how to produce the forementioned data file. The software that i currently have to help me produce this data file is Visual C#, J#, Web Development, SQL Server 2005 and Office 2007.
I have a good understanding of databases from studying SQL and Oracle but i am not sure which is the best software to use to produce the Primary Data File, ideally i would like to use Access from my Office 2007 package.
Many thanks for your help in resolving this problem.

I'm new to the DBA world, and have no one else in the company to look up to. Does anyone know what I might need to check out or do when the Data File Size is 204% full? Or is this not necessarily a bad thing?
I'm getting this from a Diagnostic tool I have.
The number of tables is 148
Data file size 35,941 MB
Data Size 26,549.92 MB
Index Size 177,130.02 MB
Log File Size 5.05 MB

My question is this:
Is there anyway to backup the current online log after complete loss of the current correponding datafile?
Example:
(2) Logical Disk Volumes
Disk 1 (D:) contains pubs_data.mdf
Disk 2 (E:) contains pubs_log.ldf
Disk 1 becomes corrupt and goes offline leaving the the database pubs in a suspect state. Is backup of the current online log pubs_log.ldf possible? If a backup of the log is not possible are there any other restoration methods that can be used to bring this database back online, rescuing as much information as possible from the current online log pubs_log.ldf.
Thanks,
P

question 1:
i found that database log file can contain more records after performing backup database statement.
for example:
i create a database and limit the log file to 2mb. then i create a table and insert data.
If i backup the database before i insert data , the database file can contain 192 records unitl the log file is full.
If i don't perform the 'backup database' statement.
The 'dbcc sqlperf(logspace)' indicate the utilization ratio is less than 40% after inserting 192 records
why?
I list my code:
Code Snippet
create database db_test
on primary
(
name=db_test,
filename='C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDatadb_test.mdf'
)
log on
(
name=db_test_log,
filename='C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDatadb_test_log.ldf',
maxsize=2mb
)
go
backup database db_test to disk='db_test.bak' --- if i don't execute this line, log file can contain a lot of record
go
create table db_test..table1(col char(8000))
--insert data to fill up the database log
declare @n int
set @n=0
while @n<192
begin
insert into db_test..table1 values(replicate('a',8000))
set @n=@n+1
end
question 2:
i create a database and limit the log file to 2mb. Then i create a table and insert data in an endless loop.
After the inserting operation executing for a while, the 9002 error occurs, indicate the log file for the database is full.
But the 'dbcc sqlperf(logspace)' command indicate the unilization ratio is low, and log_reuse_wait_desc in sys.database is 'CHECKPOINT'
And I can insert data , and i'm sure the state of log_use_wait_desc is 'CHECKPOINT'.
As i known, the checkpoint can't truncate log under full recovery model. Only the back log operation can truncate the transaction log.
So log is not full, why 9002 error is encounterd. and why the log_reuse_wait_desc return 'CHECKPOINT'?
I list my code:
Code Snippet
create database db_test
on primary
(
name=db_test,
filename='C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDatadb_test.mdf'
)
log on
(
name=db_test_log,
filename='C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLDatadb_test_log.ldf',
maxsize=2mb
)
go
create table db_test..table1(col char(8000))
--insert data to fill up the database log
declare @n int
set @n=0
while @n<>-1
begin
insert into db_test..table1 values(replicate('a',8000))
end
any suggestions?
thanks in advance.

I seem to be having problems with a very simple install of MSDE on aWindows 2000 Server. When attempting to add new records, I receivethe message "Could not allocate space for object 'MyTable' in database'MyDatabase' because the 'PRIMARY' filegroup is full."I have dealt with countless issues like this in the past and they havebeen easily resolved due to max limit of MSDE, trans log full, or thehard drive where the database is stored is full. None of these appearto be the case in this instance. The system has been working fine forabout a year.The Master database is 11 MB. MyDatabase is 33 MB. The log files areboth under 1 MB. I have 730 MB of storage available on the drivewhere the database is stored.I downloaded MSDE off of Microsoft's website and installed with thefollowing switches: BLANKSAPWD=1 SECURITYMODE=SQL. I create a userin MSDE that is the DBO for MyDatabase. Other than that, I make nochanges to the default installation.

I am running a copy object DTS and consistently get the error 'cannot allocate space for <objectname> because the primary filegroup is full.
I've got auto-grow on with unliminted growth. There is more than enough space on our Data and Log file disks. I haven't reached teh 32TB limit of the filegroup size by any stretch of the imagination. The source datbase is 250mb yet even when I create the destination DB at 300mb I still get the error!
Also, I tried creating a secondary filegroup and this didn't help, either.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Could not allocate space for object 'dw_MasterClaim_ProcLine' in database 'fl1stDwProd2' because the 'PRIMARY' filegroup is full..
I have two db's prod1 and prod2.
I looked at the properties of each.
On the tab Data Files both of these have the same file name (prod2).
One has 5897 space allocated and the other 13162.
Not sure why they are like this or even if it's correct. Could this be my problem? If so, how can I fix?

Could not allocate space for object 'dbo.Matched' in database 'MyDBK' because the 'PRIMARY' filegroup is full. Create disk space by deleting unneeded files, dropping objects in the filegroup, adding additional files to the filegroup, or setting autogrowth on for existing files in the filegroup
The drive is empty so there is plenty of room. How do I set auto gro or something so this error goes away?

(SQL SERVER 2000)
I keep getting the "primary filegroup is full" error when ever I try to write data even though the following things are true:
allow unlimited growth set for BOTH database and transaction log
auto shrink and auto update statistics flags are set in database options
growth set to 10 percent for both
database is 4GB but disk has 12GB freespace
transaction log is on same disk but is only 8MB ???
SQL shows the database has 2% free space but any attempts to write cause the error, shrinking drops this to 1% but still produces the same error on writes
SQL shows the transaction log has 90% free space
backup maintenance plans are in operation for both transaction log and database (write to different drive)
I am completely confused!

We are having full backup every day and hourly transactional log backups during the working hours in our production server which is running sql server2008 R2 as a clustered instance. For the Db's under simple recovery model we are having full backups. Now we want to implement transaction log shipping to a remote server in another site. I understand that log shipping involves the restoration of a full backup initially in the remote server and then restoring the transactional log backups which are shipped to it ,on a no recovery basis.
My question is whether we can continue taking the full backups every day in the production sever which is given for offsite storage. Will the full backups taken in the primary server, after the log shipping has been implemented, affect the log backups which are restored into the remote server. Will the chain of log backups which are restored into the secondary server be affected in any manner if a full backup is taken in the primary?
