ODBC Connection With SQL Express

Feb 15, 2007

If I create any other user (test, felix, fido, etc) in my database, that user can login successfully through Management Studio Express except not through an ODBC connection. Thus, this is a very bizarre issue. I have made sure this user has the same roles as SA. My instance is configured to handle SQL Server Authentication and Integrated. This works fine in Studio Express, but not in the ODBC connection.

When using "SA" login, I can connect to Management Studio Express and through an ODBC connection. Seems rudimentary enough, however, if I change the name in the ODBC connection i get

"Connection Failed,

SQLState '28000', SQL

Server Error 18456,

Microsoft SQL Native Client SQL Server Login failed for user 'xyz'"

Any ideas? Do I need a different ODBC Administrator?

Installing SQL Express 2005 And ODBC

Hi everyone

I have just installed SQL Server 2005, default settings. I have attempted to add a new ODBC driver using Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Data Sources (ODBC) - System DSN tab - Add - SQL Server - default settings, but it fails.

I did all this for MySQL some months ago, but I must have forgotten something.

Please can someone tell me what to do next.

Thanks in advance.

SQL Express Linked Server With ODBC

Nov 5, 2007

I have SQL Server 2005

I have a linked server using an ODBC System DSN setup.
A DB with a view to access on of the table from the Acomba DB.

This view work just fine when I logged in using the Windows Authentification.

If I create a user (bla) with "sysadmin" as server roles
the user bla is the owner of the DB (he also created the DB)
He can't access that view. But can access any tables from the same DB

The error I keep having is the following :

Executed SQL statement : SELECT * FROM OPENQUERY(ACOMBABD, 'SELECT * FROM Customer') AS derivedtbl_1
Error Source: .NEt sqlClient DataProvider
Error Message: Cannot initialize the data srouce object of OLE DB prodiver "MSDASQL" for linked server "ACOMBA"

ODBC Connection To SQL 2005 Express

Jan 18, 2006

I am attempting to setup a SQL Server 2005 Express database as a backend to an Access MDB, and need to establish an ODBC data source for the backend database. On two different systems (Windows XP Pro and Windows 2003 SBS), I get an error that says I cannot connect to the SQL Server. I get a message that says:

Connection failed: SQL State 08001 SQL Server Error: 2
[Microsoft][SQL Native Client]Named Pipes Provider: Could not open a connection to SQL Server

That is followed by a Login timeout expired and a suggestion that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.

I have shared memory, named pipes and TCP/IP protocols enabled, and the firewall set to allow connections on port 1433. And the Express manager seems to work OK.

I see several posts about issues with ODBC, but none of the suggestions seem to help in this situation. Can anyone suggest something to try? Thanks in advance.

When I open the dsn I get a dialog caled Header Record Delimiters. I accept the defaults and then I get another Dialog called Mail Merge Recipients with a whole lot of connection info, but no sign of any database tables.

Any Ideas?

Creating ODBC Connection To SQL 2005 Express

Apr 15, 2008

Hey guys,

Hope one of you can help me. I've got SQL Server 2005 Express installed on a laptop. I'm trying to create an ODBC connection to it so that I can access the database from a program locally that will be writing to it. I can connect to the SQL instance by listing the server name as DSR-XXXXXXX(ComputerName)SQLEXPRESS

However... when I access that ODBC connection, it doesn't see the database DBProScout (which was created inside SQL Express on this laptop locally), and I cannot access the tables within it. The only tables that I can access are system tables associated with SQL Server Express.

What could I be doing wrong?

Thanks!

Import Tables Through ODBC Connection Into SQL Express

May 13, 2008

I'm trying to import data from an Oracle database into SQL Express. Basically I have a database that's local to my machine (C# front end with a SQL express back end) but I need to tie in some data from an Oracle database. The reason I'm trying to import it instead of just using a connection in C# to hit it is that I need to be able to access the tables while I'm offline so I need a local copy. I couldn't find any references on doing it through stored procedures or anything like that. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance.

ODBC To SQL Express - SQL Driver Versus SQL Native Client

Aug 2, 2007

I have a SQL express database which I need to access from a shared hosting plan. I can create an ODBC connection through the hosting provider's control panel for SQL Server, but it won't connect. I tested this locally and discovered that the SQL Native Client connects fine, but the previous SQL Server driver does not. This seems to only happen with SQL 2005 Express edition; it works with the Developer Edition. Does SQL Express only use the Native SQL Client??

Thanks in advance for your help!

But no luck.

Has anyone experienced this?

ODBC Connection For Client Application To SQL Server 2005 Express Installed On Network Computer

May 5, 2006

Hi All,

I've developed an application that connects to a SQL Server 2005 Express database. I created a DSN to connect to the database through ODBC. Currently, I am testing locally and everything works fine.

I would now like to install my application on another workstation and connect remotely to the database located on my development machine.

The client workstation does not have SQL Server 2005 Express installed on it because I would just like my application to connect remotely by creating the DSN and using ODBC. What I'm missing here are the database drivers. The "SQL Natice Client" is not available on this client workstation. How can I deploy the necessary drivers with my installation file so that I may create the required DSN name using the SQL Native Client driver?

Thanks!

How Can I Use Create Or Alter Statements With ODBC And Microsoft Access ODBC Driver (*mdb)?

May 13, 2007

Hi,

I am using VB.NET 2005 and set up an ODBC connection via ODBC.ODBCConnection to a MDB database. Therefor, I use the "Microsoft Access ODBC Driver (*.mdb)".

When I set up a ODBCCommand like "ALTER DATABASE..." or "CREATE TABLE..." and issue it with the com.ExecuteNonQuery() command, I get an error from ODBC driver, that a SQL statement has to begin with SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE or DELETE.

How can I use DDL statements via ODBC?

I would appreciate if you could help me to use ODBC for that - no OLE, no ADO.

Thanks for help!

Stefan D.

MS OLE DB For ODBC With Oracle ODBC Source Headaches

Dec 25, 2005

Hi all,I am having trouble getting linked Oracle 9 server in MS SQL Server2005 Express to work properly. My machine is running Windows XP.The Microsoft and Oracle OLE DB Providers have problems dealing withOracle's Numeric Data Type, so I decided to use Microsoft's OLE DB forODBC Provider and an Oracle ODBC source. When using the Microsoft ODBCfor Oracle Driver in my ODBC source I have inconsistent behavior.Sometimes my queries are processed properly, then other times I get thefollowing errorOLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "ODBCBEAST" returnedmessage "[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Driver's SQLSetConnectAttrfailed".OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "ODBCBEAST" returnedmessage "[Microsoft][ODBC Driver Manager] Driver's SQLSetConnectAttrfailed".OLE DB provider "MSDASQL" for linked server "ODBCBEAST" returnedmessage "[Microsoft][ODBC driver for Oracle][Oracle]".Msg 7303, Level 16, State 1, Line 1Cannot initialize the data source object of OLE DB provider "MSDASQL"for linked server "ODBCBEAST".I have no idea why sometimes I can connect to the linked server with noproblems andwhy other times it performs like this. I'm not changing anything aboutthe system I can think of. When I use an Oracle client (PL/SQL) I haveabsolutely no problems connecting. TNSPING returns that the connectionis good. This is unacceptable so I decided to try my luck with the Oracle 10gODBC driver. However when I use this and perform an openquery selectagainst the linked server I get back only 11 rows, when I know that thedatabase has over 100 rows (in fact when using the Microsoft ODBCdriver and it works that's what I get). I figured maybe the buffersetting needed to be raised in the ODBC configuration so I took it from64000 to 600000 (a magnitude of 10) but I still get back only 11 rows.I'm at my wit's end.Any suggestions on resolving one or the other problem would be muchappreciated. Thanks much

SQL Server Management Studio Express, Database Explorer In Visual Web Developer Express...which To Use???

Apr 16, 2007

When I downloaded/started using Visual Web Developer I was under the impression that I needed to install SQL Server Management Studio Express in order to create/manage databases, and to provide the engine to access the data.
Since then I have found tutorials and have successfully created/used databases solely from within Visual Web Developer. I'm assuming that Visual Web Developer includes a database engine, much like the webserver that is included. (This is an awesome thing).
When I tried to upload my web application with database to my production server, the database would not work, it started working after I installed SQL Server Management Studio Express on the server.
Is it my understanding that you need SQL Server Management Studio Express if you do not have Visual Web Developer Express installed in order to provide the data access engine?
Also, I am unable to "attach" my Visual Web Developer Express created database to SQL Server Management Studio Express. Are there any posts that provide more information about this topic?

The only reason I'm asking is that I have extra whitespace on the end of my text fields, and I thought ANSI_PADDING was turned on. I do not see the option in Visual Web Developer Express, but have found it in SQL Server Management Studio Express.

How To Configure SQL Server Management Studio Express To Allow Doing Non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 From VB 2005 Express?

Hi all,

For the first time, I want to set up the configuration of my SQL Server Management Studio Express (SSMSE) to allow me in doing the non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 programming from my VB 2005 Express. The SSMSE and VB 2005 Express are in my Windows XP Pro PC that is part of our NT 4 LAN System in our office. I read the article "How to configure SQL Server 2005 to allow remotre connections" in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914277/ about (i) "Enable remote connections for SQL Server 2005 Express", (ii) Enable the SQL Server Browser service", (iii) Create exception in Windows Firewall, and (iv) Create an exception for the SQL Server Browser service in Windows Firewall. I entered the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration and I could not decide what options I should take for doing the non-User-Instance/ADO.NET 2.0 programming from my VB 2005 Express. I have the following questions on the page of "Minimize SQL Server 2005 Surface Area":
(1) I saw "Configure Surface Area for localhost [change computer]". I clicked on [change computer] and I saw the
following: Select Computer
The Surface Area Configuration of this surface area of this computer or a remote computer.
Specify a computer to configure: O Local computer
O Remote computer
Should I choose the "Local computer" or the "Remote computer" option?
(2) Below the "Configure Surface Area for localhost [change computer]",
I clicked on "Surface Area Configuration for Service and Connections", Select a component and then configure its services and connections: |-| SQLEXPRESS
|-| Database Engine
Service
I picked => Remote Connection
On the right-hand side, there are: O Local connections only
O Local and remorte connections
O Using TCP/IP
O Using named pipes only
O Using both TCP/IP and named pipes
Should I choose O Local and remorte connections and O Using named pipes only?

Please help and tell me what options I should choose in (1) and (2).

Are The Databases Created Within VWD Express Accessible By Aspnet_regsql.exe Or Management Studio Express?

Nov 13, 2006

Hi,When I attempt to add the membership functionality to a database created within VWD Express, by using the aspnet_regsql.exe application (connecting to ./SQLEXPRESS using Windows authentication), the database I've created within VWD Express doesn't appear within the list of accessible databases. I have the same problem when attempting to access the same database within Management Studio Express.Does this mean that databases created from within VWD Express don't use the same storage mechanism or paradigm as those already available within Management Studio Express? Or perhaps I need to somehow register the database using Management Studio Express? As a side note, I'm not sure if the "File/Open File" menu option within Management Studio Express holds the answer to my problems, but rather bizarrely, it crashes Management Studio Express when I select it.Apologies for the rambling - in essence my question is "How can I make databases created within VWD Express appear within aspnet_regsql.exe and/or Management Studio Express?"Many thanks,Jon

Database Connection: Mapped Network Drive (VC++ Express, MSSQL SMS Express, XP)

Sep 8, 2007

Hi

I have VC++ express and MSSQL SMS express and have an application working nicely locally. The Data explorer and data connections part works really easily.

Now, I want to make the application available to my home network.

I mapped the drive where the database is and called it Z: so I could put my "release" on my other network PC and assumed it would find Z: if I mapped the shared network drive on that machine and called it Z:

But: I can't even add the mapped connection on the local machine, I get:

The file "Z:databasescalorie.mdf" is on a network path not supported for database files. An attempt to attach.....etc"

It works fine on the original F drive.......

Am I approaching this the wrong way. How should I distribute to network PCs?

thanks hopefully
David

Issues With Microsoft SQL Serever 2005 Express Edition And Other Versions Of SQL Express

Feb 20, 2007

I have uninstalled the SQL Server Express Edition that I have installed from the CDs that were given to me during a Chicago Conference when READY TO  LAUNCH Visual Studio 2005, SQL SERVER 2005, and Biz Talk 2005.
Then I went to microsoft website: http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/register/default.aspx and downloaded and installed the so called Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and I got the messages Error that you read below. Then I Uninstalled Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition  and went again to msdn website and downloaded Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Advanced Services SP1 and installed it. I got again the same message as below.

MESSAGE:

1. First comes a window with the title: €śsetup.exe €“ Unable to Locate Component€?
And it displays a message:
This application has failed to start because MSTDCPRX.dll was not found.
Re-installing the application may fix this problem.
2. After I click the OK button of this window it comes another window with the title: €śMicrosoft SQL Server 2005 Server Setup€?
And it displays a message: Failed to load SqlSpars.dll

Does anybody can tell what is going on with the 3 times I tried to installed different SQL Server 2005 Express Edition and I get the same message?????

Thanks for your help and support when you have time to respond.
Sincerely,
TonyC

Import Existing Database Into SQL SERVER EXPRESS Management Studio Express

Feb 18, 2008

Hi,

I am a newbie so i apologies beforehand for any mistakes i make on this forum.
Anyway, i created an asp.net website using the MS Visual Web developer tool. This has a couple of SQL SERVER databases within it.
I then latervinstalled the SQL SERVER management studio express in order to manage the SQL SERVER DBs that i had as part of my website but they do not appear within the management studio db list.
As this is the express version, is there anyway of importing the existing SQL SERVER dbs that i have to the management studio so i can manage them from there?

Regards,

Shuja.
