Problems With Two Insert Queries In A Page
Feb 22, 2005
Hello
I have a question about something odd happening with an insert query.
I am working on a password protected site and I want to moniter general student use. I have an on page load even which picks up their user id and the url and sends it to the database
Because my site is a beta site, I also want the users to be able to add their comments as and when they want, so I built a small feedback form on each page.
The quick feedback form has a panel to hide it until a user clicks on a radio button and this reveals a text box and a submit button.
However, since I have added this second sql connection with an insert, I now get an error message I was getting a connection string error when I tried to point at the connection string in the web.config file, so I put the full path in to the database and now I get an error message that says the conTrackUser has not been declared, but as you can see from the code it certainly has. So I'm beginning to thing that the error is something entierly different, but that's probably me being thick.
I've pasted the two insert blocks below, I can't see anything wrong with them, but then I'm mostly groping about in the dark with asp.net.
Is it not possible to have two insert commands on a page? That would be daft.
Here is the code.
Track and initilize the radio button and panel for the feedback:
Sub Page_Load(Sender As Object, E As EventArgs)
Dim UserID as String = session("UserID")
pnlQuickFeedback.Visible = False
If Not Page.IsPostback Then
Dim conTrackUser As SqlConnection
Dim strInsert As String
Dim cmdInsert As SqlCommand
conTrackUser = New SqlConnection("server='server'; user id='me'; password='nuts'; database='database'")
cmdInsert = New SqlCommand("TrackUser5530", conTrackUser)
cmdInsert.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure
cmdInsert.Parameters.Add("@UserIdentity", session("UserID") )
cmdInsert.Parameters.Add("@URL", Request.Url.AbsoluteUri )
conTrackUser.Open()
cmdInsert.ExecuteNonQuery()
conTrackUser.Close()
End If
End Sub
The sub for the feedback:
Sub SubmitFbbtn_Click(Sender As Object, E As EventArgs)
Dim UserID as String = session("UserID")
'If Not Page.IsPostback Then
Dim conQuickFeedback As SqlConnection
Dim strInsert As String
Dim cmdInsert As SqlCommand
conQuickFeedback = New SqlConnection("server='server'; user id='me'; password='nuts'; database='database'")
cmdInsert = New SqlCommand("QuickComments5530", conQuickFeedback)
cmdInsert.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure
cmdInsert.Parameters.Add("@UserIdentity", session("UserID") )
cmdInsert.Parameters.Add("@Comments", txtComments.text)
cmdInsert.Parameters.Add("@URL", Request.Url.AbsoluteUri )
conQuickFeedback.Open()
cmdInsert.ExecuteNonQuery()
conQuickFeedback.Close()
pnlQuickFeedback.Visible = False
feedbackFormbtn.Visible = True
feedbackFormbtn.Checked = False
End Sub
thanks

Hello, I'm new to the forum and new to SQL, ASP.NET, etc. I am creating an intranet site for my company in VS 2005 and have run into a very annoying problem that I can't seem to solve. I have tried Googling it and came up empty. I have a database in SQL Express 2005 and my website will be accessing several tables within the database. I can retrieve info just fine and I can update, delete, etc just fine using gridview or other prebuilt tools, but when I add a few text boxes and wire a button to the SqlDataSource.Insert() command, I get a new record that is full of null values except for the identity key I have set. The kicker is that I am also using a master page and when I duplicate the web page without the master page link, everything works just fine. The following snippets show what I'm doing:<InsertParameters><asp:FormParameter Name="Name" Type="String" FormField="txtName" /><asp:FormParameter Name="Location" Type="String" FormField="ddlLocation" /><asp:FormParameter Name="Issue" Type="String" FormField="txtProblem" /></InsertParameters>Of course I match the formfields to the text boxes, create an onclick event for my button, the sqldatasource is configured correctly, it just doesn't work with the master page no matter what I do. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Is there any way to use a graphical designer to build your insert & update SQL statements in Enterprise manager? I mean Access has an EASY way to build them, surely SQL does too?
I would just build them in Access and copy the SQL, but then I'm stuck replacing all the "dbo_" with "dbo." and other little nuances.

I have 4 tables which I am extracting 2 distinct values;
Select Distinct UniId, PID from dbo.Event1
Select Distinct UniId, PID from dbo.Event2
Select Distinct UniId, PID from dbo.Event3
Select Distinct UniId, PID from dbo.Event4
Then, I want to select Distinct between these 4 tables (Event1, Event2, Event3 and Event4)
Then insert the distinct records of the 4 tables to the final table - dbo.EventLookup .

Hi,Ive got a class in my code which contains data from several tables. A user profile has a single record in a user_profile tables, for each of these records there is several records in a another table, which itself has several records in a tags table.So far the save method on the class saves the record to the user profile table, then loops through the next two tables info to insert each record. I want to decrease the number of trips to the database and am wondering if anyone can advise on the best way to do this.I am considering using a dataset to retrieve and store the records, instead of a datareader Im using currently. Then when Im done altering the data in the dataset (all three tables) I can commit all the changes in one database transaction?? I have been avoiding datasets due to the fact datareaders are apparently faster.My other option is to try make three calls to the database, one per table, updating my stored procedures to accept arrays of data using XML?? Can anyone tell me what is the best option for me?Thanks,C

I have a SQL stored procedure like so:
CREATE PROCEDURE sp_PRO
@cat_num nvarchar (10) ,
@descr nvarchar (200) ,
@price DECIMAL(12,2) ,
@products_ID bigint
AS
insert into product_items (cat_num, descr, price, products_ID) values (@cat_num, @descr, @price, @products_ID)
when I try and insert something like sp_PRO '123154', 'it's good', '23.23', 1
I can't insert "'" and "," because that is specific to how each item is delimited inorder to insert into the stored procedure. But if I hard code this into a aspx page and don't create a stored procedure I can insert "'" and ",". I have a scenario where I have to use a stored procedure...confused.

I am using a sql server 2000 database to log the results from a monitorthat I have running - essentially every minuite, the table describedbelow has a insert and delete statements similar to the ones below runagaint it.Everything is fine for a few weeks, and then without fail, all accessesto the table start slowing down, to the point where even trying toselect all rows starts timing out.At that point, the only way to make things right that I have found, isto delete the table and recreate it.Am I doing something specific that sql server really doesn't like? I'm writing an application for Windows Mobile 5 / Pocket PC using VB.NET 2005. The database is connected using an instance of SqlCeConnection and updated by an SqlCeCommand.
The application can perform select queries on data originally entered into the database through Visual Studio, or perform update / insert queries at run time. Anything inserted or updated can be returned by a select query whilst the application is running, however, anything I have inserted or updated doesn't appear to be written to the SDF file and hence is not in the database after restarting the application.
Am I missing something that's different between performing queries on an SQL CE database on Pocket PC and an ODBC source in a normal Windows application?

I have created a bulk insert query in SQL;
BULK INSERT TempTable FROM 'c:arcodeewdata.csv' WITH (FIELDTERMINATOR = ',', ROWTERMINATOR = '')
which imports my csv data into the table no problem, but need some assistance on how to call this from a asp.net page.
I have created a file upload, which once successfully uploaded I would like to then call the BULK INSERT statement to import all of the data.
The pages are asp.net C# and a sql 2005 database.
Thanks

I have a page that has a drop down control that is used to control the items in a FormView. The drop down is bound to one SQLDatasource while the FormView is bound to another SQLDataSource. I've got everything working great. Selecting an item in the drop down reveals the details in the form view. the Form can be opened for editing and deleting. I even have the Insert working. But there lies my problem. Once the Insert is executed I'd like to take the Index value of the recently submitted item and set it to the SelectedIndex of my dropdown. Here is the code for each of the SQL events Sub FormViewUpdated(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As FormViewUpdatedEventArgs) Handles FormView1.ItemUpdated
confirmation.Visible = True
confirmation.Text = "<img src=""../img/smiley36.gif""> Your record has been updated."
Dim index As Integer = Me.DropDownList1.SelectedIndex
DropDownList1.DataBind()
Me.DropDownList1.SelectedIndex = index
End Sub
Sub FormViewDeleted(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As FormViewDeletedEventArgs) Handles FormView1.ItemDeleted
confirmation.Visible = True
confirmation.Text = "<img src=""../img/smiley36.gif""> Your record has been deleted."
DropDownList1.DataBind()
FormView1.ChangeMode(FormViewMode.ReadOnly)
End Sub
Sub FormViewInserted(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As FormViewInsertedEventArgs) Handles FormView1.ItemInserted
confirmation.Visible = True
confirmation.Text = "<img src=""../img/smiley36.gif""> Your record has been inserted."
DropDownList1.DataBind()
End Sub
I would like to do something similar to the Updated event in the Inserted sub. Notice I have a Me.DropDownList.SelectedIndex bit...I'd like to be able to set a variable to the new ID and then set the Me.DropDownList.SelectedIndex to that variable. My stored proc for the Insert reads like
ALTER PROCEDURE dbo.usp_INSERTHelp_Faq
(
@FAQQuestion varchar(500),
@FAQText ntext,
@FAQIndex varchar(500),
@ModifiedBy int,
@Help_FAQID int OUTPUT
)
AS
INSERT INTO Help_FAQ (FAQQuestion, FAQText, FAQIndex,ModifiedBy, Views)
VALUES (@FAQQuestion,@FAQText,@FAQIndex,@ModifiedBy,0)
SELECT @Help_FaqID = @@Identity
RETURN
So, the Stored Proc is set up to return the latest ID. Also, my SQLDataSource for the FormView has an InsertParameter: <asp:Parameter Direction="Output" Name="Help_FAQID" Type="Int32" />
Any thoughts on how to close the loop here? How do I get my hands on the new Help_FAQID?

A problem has come up in designing a Web page to maintain a small reference table in SQL Server 2000 (9 columns, about 25 records).
I tried to design the Web page to allow INSERT and UPDATE operations using a single page that posts back to itself. The page contains a set of empty form fields for a new record, followed by a set of filled-in form field for each row in the table. The form fields for existing records are given a unique name based on the field name concatenated with the primary key value for that row.
If I set up the page to INSERT only, it works properly. But when I add the fields for existing records, the INSERT operation malfunctions. Specifically, anytime a set of existing fields for a particular column is added to the page, the INSERT will no longer work properly for that column. This is true for all fields except the primary key field. It always INSERTs correctly. I tried adding only some columns to the set of existing form fields. In that case, the INSERT operation added the correct values for the fields that were not listed in the existing records section, but failed for the others.
I am using the INSERT INTO syntax for that operation and the recordset .Update syntax for the edits. I tried using the recordset .AddNew/.Update syntax for the insert, but it exhibited the same problems. The column data types contain smallint, bit, nvarchar, and ntext types.
I know that the correct values are being put into the INSERT statement. I also tried renaming the INSERT form fields to be totally different than the names of the existing record fields. But the problem comes back no matter what.
If necessary, I can split the logic so that inserts and updates are handled by different pages. But I would like to make this work if possible. If a reader knows why SQL Server is causing this problem, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
My scenario:
I have a master securities table which has 7 fields. As a part of the daily process I am uploading flat files into database tables. The flat files contains the master(static) security data as well as the analytics(transaction) data. I need to
1) separate the master (static) data from the flat files,
2) check whether that data is present in the master table, if not then insert that data into the master table
3) If data present then move that existing record to an history table and then update the main master table.
All the 7 fields need to be checked to uniquely identify a single record in the master table.
How can this be done? Whether we can us a combination of data flow items or write a sql procedure to do all this.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Hello I have a project that uses a large number of MS Data access pages created in Access 2003 and runs on MS SQL2005.
When I am on lets say my client, (first page in a series) data access page and I have completed the fields in the (DAP), I am directing my users to the next step of the registration process by means of a hyperlink to another Data access page in the same web but in a linked or sometimes different table.
I need to pass data entered /created on the first page to the next page and populate the next page with some data from the first page / table. (like staying on the client name and ID when i go to the next page)
I also need the first data access page to open and display a blank or new record. Not an existing record. I will also be looking to creata a drop down box as a record selector.
Any pointers in the right direction would be appreciated.
I am some what new to data access pages so a walk through would be nice but anything you got is welcome. Thanks Peter€¦

The following objects are placed on the Report body of the Report pane of SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services :
<textbox: expression1>
<textbox: expression2>
<table:table1 with at least 30 columns and 30 expressions>
<textbox: string1> - considered as the Title in the Footer section of the report
<texbox:string2> <textbox:expression3>
<textbox:string3> <textbox:expression4>
<textbox:string4> <textbox:expression5>
<textbox:expression6>
I can't find any explanation why is it string1 and string 2 of the footer section of my report displayed separately from the expression3 which is aligned on it and the rest of the object on the second page.
The expected design is that all Footer items should be displayed together of whether it is placed on the first page or on the last page.
As a workaround of this, I converted string 1 into an expression (Added = and enclosed the string with double quote).. As a result, all of the items in the Footer section are now placed together on the last page of the report.
I also remember one of the issue I encountered before where the Footer items where placed together on the first page and still have space at the bottom of the page, but then expression 6 is forced to display (alone) on the last page of my report.
I can't find any discussion related to this, I wish somebody could give me an idea why RS behaved like this.
Thanks in advance

Hello,
If I have a report that includes a page header, the report viewer will render the report at the full width, but if I hide the page header and show only the body it will use the absolute width of the report.
I have a 7" wide report, with .75" borders set on each side.
Interactive & Print size are set to 8.5x11
Changing these sizes has no effect on the behavior of the viewer, which appears to ignore them.
When I view this report in the local viewer the contents fill the window if there is no page header.
If I enable the page header then the report is drawn at 8.5" wide, leaving a _big_ white border on the right side.
Any comments or workarounds that anyone knows? I know the local viewer is not a standard configuration (at least it seems) but it is what we need to use.Thanks,//Andrew
