T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Separating Values - Number And Alphabets

Jul 28, 2015

Below are the same data

with Sample(Size) as (
select '16.3 Oz.' union all
'1' as union all
'2 Tablespoons' union all
'46. Oz. Each' )

Iwant to separate number and alphabets. But i wanted to keep the dot to have decimal values. Expected output

select '16.3' as val1 'Oz' as val2 union all
'1' val1 as union all
'2' as val1 'Tablespoons' as val2 union all
'46' as val1 'Oz Each' as val2

Please note that i need to remove the extra dots at the end of the the val1 and no dots in val2

I rid some of the functions like dbo.fn_StripCharacters and dbo.fn_GetAlphabetsOnly ffound in the internet. evey with my own logic. i couldn't remove the dot which appear at the end of val1

How To Set The Database To Always Use Next Increment Number?

May 22, 2007

Is there a way to make the primary ID as Identity Column to always be in order? For example, I have 5 rows with ID 1,2,3,4,5. If I delete record number 5 and then added another record, the ID shows up as 6 and not 5. Or if I delete record number 3, the next ID is going to be 6 instead of 3. I like to keep all my ID in order if possible and not skipping if that is even possible or should I use that practice.

Increment Number On Fields With Same Value

Dec 2, 2013

I have a Column named 'Series' and a column named 'Linenumber'. They look like this:

Series Linenumber
234 NULL
234 NULL
235 NULL
235 NULL
234 NULL
234 NULL
235 NULL
235 NULL
236 NULL
236 NULL
236 NULL

And I want to run a query and make it look like this:

Series Linenumber
234 1
234 2
235 1
235 2
234 3
234 4
235 3
235 4
236 1
236 2
236 3

So basically I want Linenumber to be an increment column but to increment seperately for each value of Series. RDBMS is Microsoft SQL Server 2008.

Sequenced Increment Based On Previous Row Change

Jul 6, 2014

I am pretty new to SQL and facing difficulties with a current problem.

I have a list of customers and a sequence of events they have triggered . I know the sequence in which these events have been triggered and only want to increment a value when a new event is triggered (value to remain the same if the event is the same). I have come close to a solution with Dense_rank but the problem here is that the ranking doesn't reset if the same even previously triggered is triggered a bit later in the sequence. see below an example of current results and expected results:

Customer ID,Sequence ID,event,current result,expected result
1,1,A,4,1
1,2,A,4,1
1,3,B,3,2
1,4,C,2,3
1,5,A,4,4
1,6,A,4,4
1,7,E,1,5
1,8,D,5,6
2,1,B,3,1
2,2,C,2,2
2,3,C,2,2

Increment Number Code - Phantoms?

Feb 9, 2000

Here is a piece of code I found in an application I'm supporting.
Problem: We're seeing duplicate numbers and I think this code may be the source of it.

At first glance I did not understand how it worked.
It locks a table <begin tran> , updates a number, reads that number, then commits. This code appears to work - it returns the newly added number.

My Question - How? How can this code return a value that is not "Committed" to the database yet. Please critique..... I have an alternate method, please comment on it as well. Thanks for your input.

--THIS IS WHAT I FOUND....
CREATE PROCEDURE sp_UpdateOrderNumber @customer int AS
DECLARE @NewOrderId int,
BEGIN TRAN
UPDATE CUSTOMERS
SET ORDER_NUMBER=ORDER_NUMBER + 1
WHERE COMPANY_ID=@customer
SELECT
If @@ERROR <> 0 OR @@ROWCOUNT <> 1 /* Check for Errors */
Begin
Rollback Tran
Return -999
End
SELECTORDER_NUMBER
FROMCUSTOMERS
WHERECOMPANY_ID=@customer
SELECT
If @@ERROR <> 0 OR @@ROWCOUNT <> 1 /* Check for Errors */
Begin
Rollback Tran
Return -998
End
COMMIT TRAN

My Newly suggested method. Using Implicit transaction.
I believe this is more "concurrency" friendly. Do you?

Begin loop until success
Read Number
Update to Number+ 1 WHERE number is the one I just read
If row was updated, use this new number and set success flag
Loop

SQL Server 2012 :: Increment Query Based On Two Tables?

Feb 17, 2014

I have two tables with this info:

TABLE 1

COL1 COL2 COL3
AAA BBB CCC
QQQ WWW EEE
AAA SSS DDD
WWW EEE RRR
BBB BBB BBB

TABLE 2

COL1 COL2 COL3 COL4
b b b 343
a a a 344
c c c 345
d d d 346
e e e 347

I want to insert TABLE 1 into TABLE 2 with a query that will auto increment to COL4 looking like this:

COL1 COL2 COL3 COL4
b b b 343
a a a 344
c c c 345
d d d 346
e e e 347
AAA BBB CCC 348
QQQ WWW EEE 349
AAA SSS DDD 350
WWW EEE RRR 351
BBB BBB BBB 352

I know this can be done easily by just altering the column to have an auto-increment datatype, but I currently cannot do that at this moment.

How Do I Generate Auto Increment Number In SQL Express?

In addition, is there any tutorial on how to use SQL Express to generate customised unique numbers (such as membership number, Customer ID such as A001 where A is based on the customer's name while 001 is due to the fact that the customer is the first among those with names starting with A)?

SQL Server 2012 :: Increment Date Based On Time Value Automatically

Jul 1, 2015

I have a client data which has the candidate id, a start date which will have only the date in varchar format and a time value associated to that date in varchar format in a seperate column.

To give a brief explanation about the data a candidate will come to study center at any time point in a day for example 10:00 AM on 20-10-2014. The start date will be 20-10-2014 and from 10:00 AM he will have test based on the time point. So if the time point is 2 HR, then at 12:00 PM he will have a test. If the time point is 8 HR, it will get added with 10:00 AM and based on this he will have the test at 06:00 PM. When the timepoint reaches 00:00 the start date needs to be the next date instead of 20-10-2014.

The start date needs to be appended with the time value such that when it crosses over the time 00:00, the start date needs to get increased by 1 ie the next day. I have added the start date to the time by using the code below

CAST(STARTDATE as datetime) + CAST(CAST(STUFF([TIME],3,0,':') as time(0)) as datetime) as [EXPECTEDDATETIME]

By this above code i have created the expected datetime however

I will not be able to hardcode the value due to dynamic data. I tried to apply >= and < to the time value something like

case when MyTime >= '00:00' and MyTime < '08:10' the Dateadd(day, 1, date)

This works perfect but my concern is that I cannot put the value 08:10 because it will not a constant value for all rows.

I have provided a screenshot of my data and a expected date column for reference.

Candidate StartDateStartTimeExpected DateTime Timepoint
1 20141020 1000 2014-10-20 10:00:00 0 HR
1 201410201200 2014-10-20 12:00:00 02 HR
1 201410201400 2014-10-20 14:00:00 04 HR
1 201410201800 2014-10-20 18:00:00 08 HR
1 201410200000 2014-10-21 00:00:00 12 HR
1 201410201200 2014-10-21 12:00:00 24 HR

SQL Server 2008 :: Generate Increment Number With Conditional Restart

May 22, 2015

I need to create a script that adds an incrementing suffix to two columns, but restarts based on the value of another column. I found a similar question in the SQL Server 2000 forum, but it doesn't quite fit and also I'm working with SQL Server 2008 R2. The code below both creates a table with test data and tries to carry out the task. If you run this, you will see that the VISITNUM column has a value of UNS in row 4, UNS.1 in row 5 and UNS.2 in row 6. In row 7 it's V200, then in rows 8 and 9 it's UNS.3 for both. The same suffix gets applied to the VISIT column, but of course if I can solve this for VISITNUM then adding the suffix to VIST as well will be easy.

What I need is for row 8 to have UNS and row 9 to have UNS.1. In other words, any time the VISITNUM is UNS several times in a row, I need to add that ".X" suffix, but if a row has something other than UNS, I need to start over again the next time it's UNS again.

CREATE TABLE #testing(
KitID varchar(20),
SubjID varchar(20),
VISIT varchar(60),
VISITNUM varchar(20),

T-SQL (SS2K8) :: Write Into A Table User-entered Value And Increment That Number N Times As Existing Rows

Jun 25, 2014

I need to have a script where it ask the user for a value, the script will search for all records that match the value. Then it will display the numbers of records found and ask the user to enter a different value. The rest of the script will use this new value and increment by 1 n times as the number of records found. I started the script where it will ask for "HANDLE" and display the number of records found with that "HANDLE"

declare @HANDLE as varchar(30)
declare @COUNT as varchar(10)
declare @STARTINV as varchar(20)

set @HANDLE = ?C --This is the parameter to search for records with this value
set @STARTINV = ?C --User will input the starting invoice number
SELECT COUNT as OrderCount FROM SHIPHIST
where HANDLE = @HANDLE

I just can't figure out how to proceed to use the entered invoice # and increment by 1 until it reach the number of records found.

This will be the end results:

Count=5 --results from query
STARTINV=00010 --Value entered by user

Handle,Inv_Num
AAABBB,00010
AAABBB,00011
AAABBB,00012

SELECT CommentID, Contents, CreatedOn, CreatedBy FROM Comments WHERE (GuideID = @GuideID) ORDER BY CreatedOn DESC
To avoid having to calculate the numeric position of each comment (e.g. the first comment made would be #1, the next #2, the next #3 etc) within a Repeater control with a code-behind, can it be done directly within the SQL query?

Need To Have 2 Auto Increment Columns (Seed, Increment)

Dec 11, 2007

Hello,

I Have a table that needs to have 2 unique number.

detail_id and detail_print_id.

detail_id is already an IDENTITY.

both fields need to be different, because when importing, it imports the same data into a table twice, with only a slight data change (and id is not one of the changes).

So I thought i could do the following:

detail_id INT NOT NULL IDENTITY(1,2),
detail_print_id INT NOT NULL IDENTITY(2,2),
--blah blah

that way, the detail_id will always be odd, and the detail_print_id will always be even. however SQL Server 2005 only allows 1 identity per table, and both these fields need to be auto generated when the field is inserted, so as to prevent double data.

is there anyway I can create a int column to auto increment, without the column being an IDENTITY??

also, I would prefer to not have to create a second table with a single column just for this work.

Thanks,
Justin

Get ColorID Based On Number Of Values Passed

Dec 20, 2014

I have a requirement regarding a color combination data. I have a lookup table that holds a colorid, p1, p2, p3, p4 to p8 which will be having colors Red, Green and Amber. P1 to P8 columns holds these three colors based on their combinations.

I have attached the look up table data for reference.

I need to pass the color values to p1 to p8 and need to retrieve the color id based on the passed color.

If we pass values for all p1 to p8 then it is easy to get the color code, however it will not happen. The passed values may be dynamic. ie we will not have all 8 values all the times. sometimes we will have 2 colors passed, sometimes 5 colors will be passed.

If i pass only two colors say red and red, i need the color id of only the row that has red and red for p1 and p2 alone. i dont want want all the colorid's that has red and red in p1 and p2 and some other colors in p3 to p4.

The exact colorid of the combination must be returned on passing the values to p1 and p2.

To elaborate; I am passing Red and Red as values to P1 and P2. In the look up table we can have 10 rows that has red and red i p1 and p2 like

colorid p1p2p3p4p5p6p7p8
1 redred
10 redredred
20 redredred
30 redredredred
40 redredredredred
50 redredredredredred
60 redredredredredredred
70 redredredredredredredred

So the result must have only the colorid 1 and not all the colorid's listed above. when I pass 3 red as values for p1, p2, p3 then the result must be 10. Colorid 1, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60 and 70 must not come in the result.

I need a function or procedure that will accept the arguments and provide me the result based on the values.

Create (n) Number Of Records Based On Date Range

Mar 11, 2008

Ok, I have two parameters - @StartDate and @EndDate. We only care about the date part of these paramters. What I would like to do is create a table with one record for each date between these two values. For example:

@StartDate = '01/01/2008'
@EndDate = '01/8/2008'

Should yield a table with 9 records in it for every day between @StartDate and @EndDate like so:

01/01/2008 <datacol1> <datacol2>
01/02/2008 <datacol1> <datacol2>
01/03/2008 <datacol1> <datacol2>
01/04/2008 <datacol1> <datacol2>
01/05/2008 <datacol1> <datacol2>
01/06/2008 <datacol1> <datacol2>
01/07/2008 <datacol1> <datacol2>
01/08/2008 <datacol1> <datacol2>

I know I could just do a WHILE (@StartDate <= @EndDate) loop and insert records into a temp table but I'm looking to see if there are any new methods/techniques to achieve this with a more simple statement.
