Putting Multiple Xml Files Data Into Database In A Single Transaction
Sep 27, 2006
First of all i do not know whether this is the right form to ask the question
Let me describe the scenario iam using
Iam generating xml files at a particular place and sending them to a server
xml1|--------------------->dataset1------------------------------>adapter1.update(dataset1)
xml2|----------------------->dataset2----------------------------->adapter2.update(dataset2)
xml3|----------------------->dataset3------------------------------>adapter3.update(dataset3)
all the three updates should happen in only one transaction if any one of the update fails then the transaction should rollback
can anyone tell me a way to do it
i am desperately in search of any ways to do it can anybody help please

I have several databases that have grown to 300 GB and would like to distribute the data into multiple files across multiple drives. Can I create a new database that is spread across the new drives and use a full backup to restore or am I stuck with unloading the data table by table?

We have a scenarion in a batch job. There are 3 sp's which are executed for every record in a table. After the execution of first sp the second sp executes depending upon the result of first sp. Simillarly for 2nd and 3rd sp.
Now if any sp execution fails than the whole transaction for that record in the table has to be rolled back.
Can this whole process of executing the multplie sp's insides a single transaction be accomplished using service broker with either a single queue or multiple queues?
sp 1 (1 record)
__________ l_____________
l l l sp2 ( 3 records for 1 record in sp1)
Simillalry for the one record in sp2, sp3 executes for multiple records.
Or in other words if processing of any message in a queue fails all the messages that have been processed already shoould be rolled back and no further execution should happen?
Also i would like to know can a conversation group be rolled back if processing of any message in the conversation group fails. I am asking this as we can club sp2 and sp3 together to get the results directly and than try for parallel processing.
P.S. We have a multiprocessor 64 bit server.
thanks

I am retrieving the current month and setting a variable accordingly.
Code:
DECLARE @currMonthNum INT
SET @currMonthNum = DATEPART(MM, GETDATE())
My challenge is that at a later point I want to use the @currMonthNum value to 'build' a date in the style yyyymmdd and the variable is only one digit for the months January to September (e.g.: 1 to 9). For the months January to September I need to pad the variable with an extra zero (e.g.: 01 to 09).
Here is my attempt to do this...!
Code:
IF @currMonthNum IN (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9)
SET @currMonthNum = '0' + CAST(@currMonthNum AS nvarchar)
Unfortunately this does not give the desired result of two digits, however ironically if I add a + '0' to the end I get 10 to 90! It is like the 0 at the front is simply being ignored.
I have also tried setting the @currMonthNum variable to an nvarchar type before performing the character addition as well attempting to use the CONCAT command (however I don't think that CONCAT can be used when setting a variable).
how to display a zero in front of the months that require it?

We have multiple databases on a single instance in an OLTP environment. I have my data files on a separate SAN LUN from my transaction log files (and a few NDFs split out onto additional LUNs). I was wondering if there is a performance benefit to putting each LDF file on its own LUN? Or at least my few busiest LDFs?
We are currently on 2012, but I'm having to put together specs for a 2014 installation and need to answer this question without having an environment in which I can benchmark different setups. I just want to hear whether or not others have done this (why or why not?).

Hi,
I am pretty new to SSIS. I am trying to create a package which can accept data in any of several formats. i.e. CSV, Excel, a SQL Server database/table and import the data into my destination database.
So far i've managed to get this working OK. However I am now TOTALLY stuck. I'm currently trying to just concentrate on the data sources being a CSV (using a Flat File Data Source) and/or an Excel Spreadsheet.
I can get the data in and to my destination using a UNION ALL component and mapping the data sources to it so long as both the CSV file and the Excel spreadsheet exist.
My problem is that I need my package to handle the possibility that only the CSV file might exist and there is no Excel spreadsheet. In which case i'd like the package to ignore the Excel datasource completely. Currently either of my data sources do not exist I get errors and the package terminates.
Is there any way in SSIS that I can check all my data sources to see which ones exist (i.e. are valid). If they exist I want to use them. If it doesn't exist i'd like to disgard it (without error - as long as there is a single datasource the package should run)
I've tried using the AcquireConnection method in a script task on each of my connections, hoping that it would error if the file/datasource did not exist. It doesn't though (in the case of an Excel datasource it just creates a empty excel file for me).
The only other option I can come up with are to have seperate packages depending on the type of data we want to import and then run a particular package depending on the format of the source data. This seems a bit long winded. I am pretty sure I must be able to do what I want to achieve but I can't work out how.
I'll be grateful to anyone who can send me any tips/hints/links on how I can achieve this.
Many thanks
Rob Gibson

The MDF and LDF files are placed in SSD drive and tempdb files are placed in HDD drive. Snapshot isolation is enabled on the database. When a script is executed to insert data with NULL value to a table which has NOT NULL column, the transaction fails and then a log undo happens which fails and takes the database to suspect mode.
But when the MDF and LDF files are placed in HDD drive all this do not happen. The transaction just fails.

Hello:
My client has a db with the following structure:
Online US Searchable Map of the 50 US States. Users search criteria is the following: Query records by selecting state, county, then record. Each County table has 10-20 tables. All databases combined = 500MB and TLogs = 100MB.
How would you re-design a relational DB where users could query data by state-county-record. Currenty the DB's are created by the County of each state which creates hundreds of DB's in SQLServer with no realtionship to each US state. What would be the best design to ensure good performance, data integrity and maintenance? Would you create 1 DB with all 50 states, create 4 DB's and divide by region(N,S,E,W), 50 DB's of each state or leave it as is with each county it's on DB? Any suggestions would be appreciated.
thx

I have a very complex (for me, anyway) data transformation problem.
I've been given a flat-file of physician data from another system which must be automated for entry into the SQL server on a regular basis.
This was no problem until we discovered that several fields (all of which we wanted to use) had multiple pieces of information in them, separated by semicolons.
Well, this didn't seem to be too big of a problem, so I wrote a DTS activeX script to handle it. This is what I originally wrote:
'*******************
Function Transform()
'Declare variables
Dim strOffice
Dim strOfficeNew
Dim cChar
Dim x
Dim y
Dim z
'Scrub values into new rows
strOffice = DTSSource("Col050")
x = 1
y = len(strOffice)
z = 1
While x <= y
cChar = Mid(strOffice, x 1)
If cChar <> ";" Then
strOfficeNew = strOfficeNew & cChar
Else
DTSDestination("Phys_No") = DTSSource("Col001") DTSDestination("Addr_No") = z
DTSDestination("Addr_Office") = strOfficeNew
strOfficeNew = ""
z = z + 1
End If
x = x + 1
Wend
'Insert final record after last semicolon
If strOffice <> "" Then
DTSDestination("Phys_No") = DTSSource("Col001") DTSDestination("Addr_No") = z
DTSDestination("Addr_Office") = strOfficeNew
End If
Transform = DTSTransformStat_OK
End Function
'*********************
This, of course, didn't work. WHat I got was the last part of the parsed data, which for the first record, was the second Address in the field.
I searched around, and found the following script that is supposed to allow multiple rows off of a single row, but I can't seem to merge the two and still get the data out clean.
'**********
Dim nCounter
nCounter = 4
Function Main()
if nCounter > 0 then
Main = DTSTransformStat_SkipFetch
DTSDestination("PatientNumber") = DTSSource("PatientNumber") Select Case nCounter
Case 1
DTSDestination("PhysicianType") = "Admitting" DTSDestination("PhysicianId") = DTSSource
("AdmittingPhysician")
Case 2
DTSDestination("PhysicianType") = "Attending" DTSDestination("PhysicianId") = DTSSource
("AttendingPhysician")
Case 3
DTSDestination("PhysicianType") = "Referring" DTSDestination("PhysicianId") = DTSSource
("ReferringPhysician")
Case 4
DTSDestination("PhysicianType") = "Consulting" DTSDestination("PhysicianId") = DTSSource
("ConsultingPhysician")
End Select
nCounter = nCounter - 1
else
nCounter = 4
Main = DTSTransformStat_SkipInsert
end if
End Function
'**************
I'm not a VB Script expert, so there's probably something very simple that I'm missing here... if someone could point it out, I'd be greatly appreciative.

I have multiple data sources that I would like to use for a single report. The data sources are separate due to security requirements. I have a table that I can get the Initial Catalog from. How do I get that field from the database into the data source connection string at run time?
I saw this link here but the light bulb didn't go off:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms156450.aspx
"define a query that retrieves a list of data sources at run time"
Can somebody help me out here?

Hello,
we are thinking about consolidating our Vendor Sqlserver needs into single big Sqlserver box.
We currently have dedicated boxs for each vendor who requires a Sqlserver Dbs, for example Siemen Sqlserver Dbs are on one box, Clintrac Dbs are on one bx, etc.
It looks like we can save some money on HW/SW and maintenance cost by the consolidation. That's assuming that the Dbs can get along fine.
I was wondering if folks on this group can share their experience or thoughts about above setting.
Thanks,
yi

Hello all. Before my arrival at my current employer, our consultantsphysically set up our MSSQL 7 server as follows:drive c: contains the mssql enginedrive d: contains the transaction logdrive e: contains the data filesNo filegroups were set up and the data files consist of only 1 largephysical file. Currently, our data file is >10GB. When I was trained onthe physical aspects of sqlserver, I was told to never create physical files[color=blue]> 2048MB each. If I did, I could expect inefficient physical storage of[/color]data and slower performance (due to the OS).Our server has 2 RAID-5 arrays. Drive c: and e: are located on the firstarray and drive d: on the second. We're running Windows 4.0 NT Server SP6with NTFS.Can someone comment on the use of 1 single large data file vs. more smallerdata files?

This a microsoft SQL 2000 server.
I have a DB with mutliple tables that have a column called "Date_stamp", which is used as a primary ID.
Here is my problem:
Some of tables have a bad datetime entry for the "Date_stamp". The bad entry is '2008-3-18". I need to delete this entry from every single table that has a name similary to 'Elect_Sub%Daily'.
I know how to get the user table names from the DB as follows:
SELECT name
FROM dbo.sysobjects
WHERE xtype = 'U' and name like 'Elect_Sub%Daily'
What I need to do is have a query that will basically scroll through the tables name produced by the above query and search and delete the entries that read '2008-3-18".
delete from tableName where Date_Stamp = '2008-3-18'

We have a large Database (91 GB) that is currently in one large data file. Now that we have muliple disk arrays I can split that up on I would like to have a couple data files. My question is, what is the best way to split this up? Should I keep one primary file group and just create another file, or should I create a file group for indexes and put those on that? This database is used for reporting only so it doesn't really have any writes being done on it.
Thanks much.

Let's say you had a User table and one of the fields was called Deceased. It's a simple closed-ended question, so a bit value could be used to satisfy the field, if the person is dead or alive. Let's say another field is called EyeColor. A person can have only one eye color and thus one answer should be stored in this value, so this is easy as well.
Now, let's say I want to store all the languages that a specific user can speak. This isn't as easy as the previous examples since it's not a yes or no or a single-value answer. I haven't had much experience with working with databases so I've come up with two possible ways with my crude knowledge hehe.
In terms of inputting the multi-answer values, I suppose I could use a multiple-selection listbox, cascading dropdowns, etc. Now, here are the 2 solutions that came to mind.....
1) Make a field called LanguagesSpoken in the User table. When I process the selections the user makes on the languages he knows, I can then insert into the LanguagesSpoken field a string "English, Spanish, Czech" or IDs corresponding to the languages like "1, 5, 12" (these IDs would be referenced from a separate table I guess). I would use commas so that later on, when I need to display a user's profile and show the user's languages, I can retrieve that long string from the LanguagesSpoken field, and parse the languages with the commas I've used. Using commas would just be a convention I use so I would know how to parse (I could have used "." or "|" or anything else I guess) the data.
2) Forget about the LanguagesSpoken field in the User table altogether, and just make a LanguagesSpoken table. A simple implementation would have 3 fields (primary key, userId, languageId). A row would associate a user with a language. So I would issue a query like "SELECT * FROM LanguagesSpoken WHERE userId=5" (where userId=5 is some user). Using this method would free me from having to store a string with delimited values into the User table and then to parse data when I need them. However, I'm not sure how efficient this method would be if the LanguagesSpoken table grows really large since the userIds would NOT be contiguous, the search might take a long time. I guess I would index the userId field in the LanguagesSpoken table for quicker access?
OR, I may be going about this the wrong way and I'm way out on left field with these 2 solutions. Is there a better way other than those 2 methods?
I haven't work extensively with databases and I'm just familiar with the basics. I'm just trying to find out the best-practice implementation for this type of situation. I'm sure in the real world, situations like this is very common and I wonder how the professionals code this.
Thanks in advance.
