Aug 7, 2015I have a table with 1 million records. I want to update only 400 records. The update statement is provided by a 3rd party vendor. Once i run the update statement it will update all the 400 records. Once the table is updated the users will validate the table
if the update is successful or not. What i'm looking for is:
1) Is there a way to identify what records were updated.
2) If the update done is not what the users wanted i need to undo and bring back the 400 records to their previous values.
I'm on sql server 2008.

This brings though data from today and yesterday; I understand this is because GETDATE = now.
However, all I want is to see is data from today only.
Is there any way the above query can be amended - probably not using GETDATE - so I can achieve this?

If the termdate for an ID is one day less than the effdate of the next id (for the same ID) i need to collapse the records. See below example .....how should i write the query which will give me the desired output. i.e., get min(effdate) and max(termdate) if termdate is one day less than the effdate of next record.

Char(10) Breaking Query
Aug 6, 2004I have been working on a pretty ugly stored procedure recently, while debugging I added a char(10) to the end of each line of the SQL query so I could copy it to query analyzer(QA) and debug the SQL syntax output from of the stored procedure.
It had no effect on the stored procedure working, but when I copied the query to QA it got the error below, so I removed them all and added them in one line at a time to find the problem.
--Server: Msg 170, Level 15, State 1, Line 3
--Line 3: Incorrect syntax near ','.
Below are the 2 querys, the only difference is the Char(10) between Amt6 and Amt7!

I also tried char(13) with same results.
any ideas why this is happening or how to add line breaks for readability without this problem?

Jan 16, 2014I am working with Excel, then within Excel I am using MS Query to query a database. I am trying to use the CAST function on a field with numbers (1,2 or 3 digits) so I can convert it to a text value with three digits, i.e. 1 would read 001, 12 would read 012, etc.
I am not using CAST in the design grid. Is this even possible?
I am modifying the underlying SQL code. Here is the line that is giving me trouble:

Need Efficient Query To Partition Records By Type And Pull Top N Records From DB
Jan 18, 2008I have a query similar to the following. The intent of this query is to retrieve the top 6 records meeting the specified criteria (LOGTYPENAME = 'Process Status Start' OR LOGTYPENAME = 'Process Status End' ) based on most recent dates. Please keep in mind that I expect to return up to 6 records for each unique LogProcessName. This could be thousands of different LogProcessNames with up to 6 records for each.
1) The table I am executing against currently is very large in size and thus takes a long time to execute against. It would seem there must be a more efficient query to get the results I am looking for?
2) CTE doesn't work on SQL 2000. I need a query that does.
3) I cannot modify the database itself in the process.

Char(1) And Char(2) Take Same Space?
Aug 21, 2007 I create two tables:
create table table1

go
I add some records to two tables after createing operation completed.
Then i use dbcc page command to oversee the structures of data page in two tables.
I found some interest things:
The rows in two tabes take up same space:9 bytes
You can see the "9" on top of the data, for example:Slot 0, Offset 0x60, Length 9, DumpStyle BYTE
or calculate from the offset array
Any suggestions?

Its 2 tables "Courses" and "Facilitators"
The Course table contain: Course_Id and Course_Name
The Facilitators table contain: Facili_Id and Facili_Name
The two tables have (many to many) relation between them.
So I split them into a 3rd table called "Trans" which contain the PK from each Table
That will be : "Trans_Course_Id" and "Trans_Facili_Id"
I put some data on each table… at least 3 records and related some of them in the "Trans" table
Now im looking for an SQL command that brings me All the "Facili_ID" and "Facili_Name" for a specific course. And only those who is not already selected by the same course?
Like if I have the data in the "Courses" tableid: 1 and Name: VB
Id:2 and Name: C#
And in "Facilitators" table:
Id:1 and Name: Adam
Id:2 And Name: George
Id:3 and Name: Sam
Now in the relation table "Trans"
Course_Id:1 and Facili_Id:1
Course_Id:2 and Facili_Id:1
Course_Id:2 and Facili_Id:3
Now I want the SQL Commands that brings me the he "Facili_ID" and "Facili_Name"
For Course_id "For example" and should not be selected by the same course…
That would be:
Id:2 And Name: George
Id:3 and Name: Sam
And the same for eash time I pass the course_id for the command

One of our database size 90 Gb was backed up and restored on a standyby server with NoRecovery option .A Stored Procedure was written to do production Database transaction log Backup every 15 min and restore the Tlog File on Standby server.
Once the last transaction log file is restored on standby server the tlog file is deleted.
Now due to some reason the restore tlog job failed but the tlog file got deleted.
Now till we will not restore the last database backup we will not be able to start the restore tlog job.
Now the database is in restoring mode.Is there any methord to get that database online without any transactionlog.

I have two tables joined.
Table A brings one record but table B brings two records for record in table A.
What I need is join both tables but I must bring (always) the max created record from table B if there are more than one record for the one in table A. Is this clear?
I dont want to use GROUP BY beacuse it is a very big query with lot of tables and it will be a mess.
I will give an example:
TABLE A
ID NAME
1 PETER
TABLE B
ID_TABLEA CREATED BROTHER
1 1-1-08 JOHN
1 2-1-08 PATRICK
If I join both tables I will have two records. What I need is to have the max created record from table B even if one or more records are joined. I only need one match from table B for each record of table A.
Any suggestion?

Restoring Master Did Not Bring Back Users
Jun 28, 2000I'm trying to recreate a sql database on another server and I installed sql server 6.5 on a server and then restored the master db using the Sql Setup program. It worked without any errors, but it did not create the loginthat will use the database that I have not restored yet. Aren't the Logins storied in the master database?

How To Bring Extra Columns In A UNION ALL View?
Jul 19, 2006I have a view that is using UNION ALL to combine common fields of two tables, this is my statement:

FROM dbo.CT_FRAME_T

SELECT ID, STATUS, ACTIVE_STATUS, NS_PARENT_CHANGE_NUM, NS_REP, NS_CHANGE_NUM, NS_CHANGE_IDENTIFER
FROM dbo.CT_ATM_T
This works fine, but I would also like some fields that do not match to appear in the view. It is OK if the value is null for the rows of data from the other table that doesn't have the columns.
The other columns are called DLCI from CT_FRAME_T and then VPI, VCI from CT_ATM_T.
My view would then return ID, STATUS, ACTIVE_STATUS, NS_PARENT_CHANGE_NUM, NS_REP, NS_CHANGE_NUM, NS_CHANGE_IDENTIFER, DLCI (where applicable), VPI and VCI (where applicable). Is this possible?
