Read Only Permission To Reports When They Are Opened In Visula Studio
Feb 8, 2008
Hi,
I created some reports and save rdl files in a shared folder. Now some of managers want to view those reports using visual studio or BIDS(not from report manager). But they should not have access to modify the report and they can only open the rdl file and preview it.
so i'm trying to set up security level to this folder so that they can only view the rports. So I gave read, read attributes and read data permission to that folder. But still not only I can open the file but can change it too.
Does any one know how to set this security level so that when the rdl file is opened using VS, that perticular group can only preview reports?
Hi, I have installed express edition of the Visaul Studio and SQL Server 2005. But I am suprised to see that sql server is not there in server explorer of vs.net and also we create can not create the database in app_data server. It is giving error that Your default server setting does not alllow remote sql server database. What should i do to make it working. Also in ASP.NET configuration tool it it not working please help me, its very urgent regards, Jalpesh
I'm trying to open a SQL Express database (MDF) with SQL Server 2005 management Studio. Is that possible? I'm getting the following error: The specified file is either not a SQL Server Compact Edition file or is corrupt. It opens fine in Visual Studio 2005. Also, is it possible to run a script in Visual Studio 2005? If so, how? Thanks, Alex
I have a package that I was able to edit a week before. But now it is consuming all CPU memory (100%) and not letting me to edit the package (When I try to edit that it says Visual Studio Is busy even after an hour waiting).
Even though I have not changed anything, the package is behaving like this.
What is the correct way to create a security group that allows the group members to Select (Read) the content of a database?
1. Create a security group in AD 2. Add the required members to the group 3. Add the security group as a login on the SQL server (Under Security>Logins) 4. Add the security group to the specific database with Grant in Connect and Select
Hi, This is regarding the SQL 2005 Report Manager (http://localhost/Reports) page. I have posted the reports, the reports run fine, buttons like new folder, new data source, etc... are visible (lets call this machine as A). The problem is when my machine is accessed from a nearby computer on the same network as http://machineA/Reports, the Report manager Home page appears with limited or no buttons. The reports are also not visible in the browser of machine B. How do I make the reports visible to users (grant permission) for them to run and view those reports?
In a nutshell, how the posted reports be accessed by users?
I am using a "Client" dimension that includes a "Holding - Client" hierarchy. I have to make sure, that only the appropriate roles may access appropriate members from this dimension, but I only have the information which role may access which ClientID - I do not have the information which HoldingID should be accessible. Also, "Client" is used as the key column of the dimension with "ClientID" and "HoldingID" as key columns. The hierarchy is strict, no client may belong to multiple holdings.
I cannot seem to find the right MDX for the allowed member set. My MDX expression would need to look like this:
[Client].[Holding - Client].[Client].&[*]&[123]
In this example I want to give access for client &123, no matter the holding, so &1&123 and &2&123 would be allowed.
What role or system privilege do I need to grant to a user if he need to read the data from a table which is in a link server object? where I can find the document about these commands.
I got an error while deploying my report: The permissions granted to user machineNameuserName are insufficient for performing this operation. After reading the posts in the forum, I realized that my RS setup may be incorrect. On http://localhost/reports, Contents and Properties tabs are missing... Please let me know how I can correct the problems. I am using SQL Server 2005, and I have admin rights on my local machine
I have some permission problems on SQL Management Studio Express.
I'm getting this error message
An exception occured while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch (Microsoft.SqlServer.Express.ConnectionInfo)CREATE DATABASE permission denied in database 'master'. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error:262)
When I try to create a new database from the right click option on the master DB. I think this is a permission problem with the account I'm using but I don't know if it is or how to fix it.
This is running on Windows Vista and the account I'm logging into SQL with is my machines admin account. This has me stumped cause last week it was fine, I created a DB no problems. This week, it's not allowing me to create a DB.
Any helps appreciated cause at the moment I'm pulling out my hair
My company is new to MDS. I am trying to set an attritube in an entity to read only so the users can't change the value in that field. When I did that, the whole model disappeared. I thought I had deleted it by accident so I created a test model and tried to do the same. The test model disappeared. This time, before saving the new settings I took a snapshot. After saving I took another snapshot. You can see that the whole model is gone (zz_RN_Permissions_Test). I tried every other coworker with admin rights and nobody shows it on the Models list. The behavior on the Excel add-in is correct. I can't change any values on that column. But I need to keep the models available.
Need some information regarding SQL Server locking.Requirement is to run SQL Statements for reports (read-only) that willnot lock-out other people trying to update (write lock). For this, wetried the following to make the db connection not deny write locks(our report code will not have a read-only lock).ADODB.ConnectionObj.Mode =adModeShareDenyNoneBut this made our connection bumped whenever someone tried to update.Tried enabling dirty reads by doing:ADODB.ConnectionObj.IsolationLevel =adXactBrowseEven this made our connection bumped whenever someone tried to update. Is there a way to achieve what is needed without having a seperatedatabase for reports?
winxp pro, vs2005, sqlexpressIm building an application that uses a sqlexpress database and apparently something has changed, but im not sure what. When I try to expand the node for my sqlexpress database within visual studio, i get an error "user does not have permissions to perform this action". I can connect with sqlexpress management studio. What should I check ?My connection string looks like so: data source=.SQLEXPRESS;Integrated Security=SSPI;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|mytestnetdb.mdf;User Instance=true
Hi, I am getting error while opening the Data Base Engine in Sql server Management Studio. We applied SP2. and restarted the server but no luck. Error Message:Attempted to read or protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt(mscorlib).
This seems to be a basic issue, but I am having a problem trying to deploy a report to Reporting Services.
I have setup the deployment options under the properties of the Project. But each time I try to deploy a report, I get "The request failed with HTTP status 504: Gateway Time-out"
When I try to connect to connect directly to the TargetServerURL via a web browser from my client or the server itself, I can browse the structure fine. Not sure why I can't deploy via Visual Studio.
I am frequently going back and forth between the making changes to my reports and previewing those changes, all from within visual studio without publishing the reports each time.
The problem is that frequently changes that I make are not reflected in the preview window unless I either close out of visual studio completely or I wait some length of time, (I'm not sure how long exactly, but 1/2 an hour seems to always do the trick.)
Is there a way to clear any cache and force visual studio to completely reprocess a report?
At least when it is formatting changes I can identify whether the change has stuck, but when I'm fixing bugs in the code, I can't tell if I didn't fix it or if the change just hasn't taken effect.
Having finally managed to get over the hump of getting Sharepoint integrated mode working in a farm install, I am having a problem deploying reports from Visual Studio to Sharepoint.
Visual Studio is updated to Service Pack 2, as is of course the report server.
The reports APPEAR to deploy - they actually appear in the document library after deployment! But the result is:

Unfortunately I cannot view the reports in Sharepoint - I can see them in the document library but when I click them I get the same error, except in the web browser. "Report Server has encountered a SharePoint error".
The Report Server log shows the following:

"SSIS 2012 Catalog doesn't have option to give read access to SSIS Catalog to view package run reports" ... Any luck allowing power developers / operators access to READ the SQL 2012 SSIS Execution Reports without granting them SSIS_Admin or Sysadmin?
According to this link posted back in 2011 (w/ Microsoft's feedback in Nov 2011: "We’re closing this issue as “Won’t Fix.” At this point the bug does not meet our bar for resolving prior to SQL Server 2012 RTM. As we approach the SQL Server 2012 release the bar for making code changes gets progressively higher." URL....Regarding Permissions to SSIS Catalog, here are the findings. We can give access in three ways:
1. READ Access – We can provide a user db_datareader access. With this the user can see the objects within the SSIS catalog database, but cannot see the reports.
2. SSIS_ADMIN – Add the user to this database role in SSISDB. With this the user can view the reports. But it also provides them privileges to modify catalog information which is not expected. We can add it using below script EXEC sp_addrolemember 'ssis_admin' , 'REDMONDPAIntelAnalyst'
3. SYSADMIN - Add the user to this server role. This will make the user an admin on the SQL server. This is not intended. Is there any method available which will have provision to give read only access to see SSIS Catalog package execution reports and not having modify Catalog access.
I searched the list but did not see anything related.
I cannot open a file directly exported from RS in the Excel format. If I open the file in the Windows version and then close it, no need to even save it, I can then open it with the Mac version of Excel. The file size after closing is about 2K less so the RS program is adding something onto the file that the Mac version does not like. It will crash Excel when trying to open.
I cannot export the report as CSV as it will not correctly import into Excel on the Mac.
Hello. I have received the follwoing error upon an attempt to Browse the Cube. All other tabs are functional, including the Calculations tab. We are running Windows Server 2003 SP2 and SQL Server 2005 SP2. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
**EDIT** - Have confirmed SP1 for VS2005 is installed both locally and on server, also.

I have an application that uses Integrated Windows authentication. My Web.config looks like below <add key="dbconnection" value=" server=XXX;Initial Catalog=XXX;persist security info=False;Integrated Security=SSPI;Pooling=true" /> When users try to access my application, they get the below error: Execute permission denied on object 'SprocName', database 'DBNAME',Owner,'dbo' The Only way I could get rid off the error is if I set DBO permissions for the user group on the databse. Can someone suggest how to set up a security group with the ‘necessary’ permissions on SQL SERVER (ie read, write execute Sproc etc) and not too many extra ones, like DBO. Thanks,
SQL Server 2005 anomoly? In SQL Server Management Studio I granted specific permissions to user "A" to do Select, Insert, Update, Delete on Table "B" - When I logged on as User "A" and attempted the Insert imto table "B" I got the following error: "Insert Permission Denied on Table B, Database C, Schema dbo" Is this a problem with the dbo schema?
Then I went back and created a stored proccedure "D" with the exact same Insert statement inside the procedure. I granted User "A" execute permission on the stored procedure "D". I then logged on as User A and executed Stored Procedure "D". No Problem - stored procedure executed fine with the Insert. I attempted the Insert statement again - straight SQL - as User "A" and got the same error as above ("Insert Permission Denied.....") Strange behavior - cannot do a SQL. Insert even though user has permissions but can execute a store procedure with the same Insert statement. What gives?

I'm working on a SQL Server 2005 mirroring database test. The idea is to stop main DB server and activate the standby being mirrored (pretendng that principal DB Server is down)
Mirror works fine. But for the test I do the following:

I was trying to update a named instance of SQL Express SP1. I double clicked it and during extraction I get this error message:
The file C:Document and SettingsByersNLocal SettingsTempBSISQLEXP05TRACTsetupsqlcli.msi could not be opened.
SQL Express came bundled with another porgram so I'm thining it could be a bad cd. I also thought about reinstalling Windows Installer 3.1. Anybody experience this error?
Does anyone knows what is the reason behind following error ? And resolution for that ?

I am working with SQL Server 2005 and Vb.NET, this program is connected to a serial port where it might start receiving lots of data and stores it in the SQL db, but also it could be without receiving anything for hours.
I have discovered that sometimes data arriving is faster than opening the connection to db and an exception is thrown, so I am thinking about leaving the connection opened forever since the program is the only client who connects to that database.
How could I leave the connection opened forever ? or if there's a better way to achieve it I would be eternally thankful.
It works great. I'm able to open the window and target links back to the same open window. But what I can't do is keep that window on top above all of the other windows. That is without closing the newly opened window and reclicking another link.
Is there someway for me to set the focus to the newly opened window so it will always remain above all other windows? I know this can be done with javascript(Code below would do the trick) but I'm just not sure how to incorporate the scripts into reporting service.
var newwindow; function windowopen(url) { newwindow=window.open(url,'name','height=400,width=200'); if (window.focus) {newwindow.focus()}
