Can I Access MSDE On A Remote Machine With Enterprise Manager?
Sep 22, 2007We just installed an application, WhatsUpGold, to monitor our servers. Management won't let me host that on my primary SQL box. So, we are using MSDE on the local machine (call that box my_netmon).
I can access the db with very basic functionality using osql while on the my_netmon machine. I've added my domain user account as a System Admin using the following commands.
exec sp_grantlogin @name
go
exec sp_addsrvrolemember @name, 'sysadmin'
But when I go to the my_sql machine and try to attach to it with Enterprise Manager I get an error that the server does not exist.
What gives??? Is it just not possible, or am I missing something here?
My goal is to just be able to see the data stored in the MSDE db. Write views, etc...

Aug 28, 2005Installing MSDE (SP3) on a clean updated Win-XP system with all the latest fixes installed unsuccesfully. A clean systems means a fresh installed Win-XP, updated all using webupdate. And Excel 2003 installed. Thats all (not even AntiVirus (yet))

I have a question in regards to Remote MSSQL Management. I am currently using EMS SQL Manager for SQL Server, the lite version and I find it to be rather slow sometimes. Has anyone used this program? If so, is it faster in the purchased version?
Also I've heard a lot of people use Win SQL, which is better? Is there anything else out there better than these?
My employer has asked me to search for which remote management tool we should purchase. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Cost is not a huge issue, but obviously the best bang for the buck is what they are after.

Remote Restore Without Enterprise Manager
Oct 7, 2005Hi guys, I don't own a copy of Enterprise Manager and I need to remotely restore a database on my local machine to my hosted machine, can you guys recommend an application that can do remote restores?
Or is there a way to convert a Database into a long set of Transact SQL statements that I can run on the remote server (ala MySQL's MySQLDump)?

An ASP.NET website hosting service allows the use of Enterprize Manager to manage the backend database of a hosted asp.net website. This is not done across a VPN and I don't think it could be done on SSL so the question is : How Secure is that? would this be ok for learning but not Ecommerce? Or is it an encrypted session and I paranoid?

Recently had to rebuild our SQLServer installation from scratch! major pain!! We had a remote server running a replicated version of the internal database system for the website. We also have a SQL DB hosted with a new ISP which is in test mode. All managed via EM.
Re-installed software, upgaded tp SP3, new MDAC. Set up the references for the two external DB's with the Client Network Utility. In EM set up a connection to DB on the new ISP, works perfectly, tried on the old DB and get 'SQL Server is not running or access denied' error message.
I confirmed the server is running, as its our live site. Cant connect using Query Analyser. I can ping the adress successfully. I've created new user logings that mach on both machines/servers, still no luck!
Can anyone suggest what the problem is/might be or how to fix... I'm flat out of ideas!

This error does not appear when creating data access normally, and I don't use username/password for the northwind database; any suggestions.
Using Access Form Control As SQL Function Criteria
Jul 28, 2006I have a combo box named [myControl] on an Access form that I can use to select/enter a site name (ABC). There is a button on the same form that runs a report. The underlying record source for the report is a SQL Function. Is there an easy way to pass the combo box value to the SQL Function so that only records for site 'ABC' are displayed in the report? I tried Forms![myForm]![myControl] in the criteria box of the Function and it did not work. THANKS!

Aug 23, 2006I'm trying to run an SSIS package. The package runs on an SQL 2005 server on Win2k3 server. The package tries to connect to another win2k3 server with sql 2000 to retrieve some data. However, I recieve the errormessage shown in the topic.
I found info about modifying the MSDTC security settings under "component services" and did so. I made sure everything was allowed. However, the result was the same. Does anyone have any other idéa about what could cause this problem?
PS. The package works fine if I set up both databases on the same physical machine...

May 24, 2015I am just wondering if i can control the access of range of variables from users' logins.
To be more specific, if i a parameter alpha has five values (1,2,3,4,5) and then i have 3 users A, B C, what i need is:
1. A can access Vaues(1, 3)
2. B can access Values (2, 4)
3. C can access Values(3,5)
Is there anyway i can do this either from the stored procedure i am getting the data or i can do it on SSIS development side?
Control Access To SQL Server 2005 Database Only Through Stored Procedures Issue

Hello,
I have a database (SQL 2005) with two schemas (dbo and s1) and with tables defined in dbo and tables defined in s1. The stored procedures are also defined in both schemas, some of them in dbo some of them in s1. Some of the stored procedures query tables from dbo and s1 at the same time.
I want to have a new db role with access to the database only through sps and no other access read/write to the tables. I created a new db role and granted execute permission to it and assigned a user to it.
When I execute stored procedure defined in dbo with query against dbo tables, it works as expected.
However, if I run stored procedure defined in s1 with query to table in dbo, I receive error about missing select permission for the table in dbo. I am not sure why, but I can assume there is an issue with the ownership chain.
I can grand read/write permission for the tables, but this will break our original requirement for limited access to the db only through sp.
The other option is to have another role r2, with read/write, privilege and to use EXECUTE AS r2 in the sp.
I would like to ask first why the error for missing select permission happens and is there another way to have role restricted to only execute permission for all stored procedures.

I have a exist Stored Procedure in SQL 2005 Server, the stored procedure contain few output parameter, I have no problem to get result from output parameter to display using label control by using SqlCommand in Visual Studio 2003. Now new in Visual Studio 2005, I can't use sqlcommand wizard anymore, therefore I try to use the new sqldatasource control. When I Configure Datasource in Sqldatasource wizard, I assign select field using exist stored procedure, the wizard control return all parameter in the list with auto assign the direction type(input/ouput....), after that, whatever I try, I click on Test Query Button at last part, I always get error message The Query did not return any data table.
My Question is How can I setup sqldatasource to access Stored Procedure which contain output parameter, and after that How can I assign the output parameter value to bind to the label control's Text field to show on web?

There is a squiggly line under "c#" and "codebehind" as well.
I know very little of XML and XSL. What amends can I do to access the Manager? Please help somebody. Is it possible to use the Reporting Services Configuration once again to instal the Manager to another location?

I have a web application and SQL database on separate SQL 2000 server. I have no admin rights to these servers.The ISP gave me a VPN connection and password to manager my database.If i run the application from my home computer WITH the VPN connected the application works fine.However if i disconnect the VPN or try to run the application from the remote server i get this error:SQL Server does not exist or access deniedI have researched this problem extensively and CANNOT find a solution. The application and SQL 2000 database server are on different computers.
