I have my normal SQL 2005 database....and another database (on the same machine) that is the default aspnet database. I use that for authentication of course.
Everything is working well except now I need to (for a SP I'm creating) access the UserID field in the Users table (without the customer logged in). I know this isn't the best way to do it but....
Can someone tell me how to programatically (from an existing SP) access the aspnet database? So I can just check something against the UserID (providerkey) I already have? The customer isn't logged in at this point. I have their UserID from somewhere else.
Here is what I am trying to use now. IT Works in Query Manager but throws an error (...in this security context) when I run it in ASP.NET...
SELECT @UserName=(select UserName from [aspnetdb].dbo.aspnet_Users where UserID=@UserID)

I've used the ADS sample program and it works well. I looked at the code and changed it to VB (sorry, I'm not biligual yet), and have tried to 'adjust' it so I can connect to a remote PC (XP running IIS) instead of the local PC using the workgroup information database (system.mdw). Any ideas of the connection string that could make the connection?..my intention is to RDA once a week between a mobile device (3g/gsm) and a 'poor man's' IIS web server. I've tried everything I can think of, and I'm sure its possible since all I'm doing is changing the connection path.
I would like to grant the MACHINENAMEASPNET user all acccess to my MSSQL database (i.e tables and stored procedures. I can do this through enterprise manager but id rather do it programatically so i can add it to my database creation script. What is the syntax for this?
Hi can anybody know how to connect remote database with asp.net application? Actually my database is in different machine (in different server, different location) so i want to connect that server. Every time I'm getting the fallowing message
An error has occured while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. Thank you, Nagu
I have a remote SQLExpress instance running. I can connect to its databases with the SQL Server Management Studio Express and Visualstudio (Datasources) on a remote system and on a local system.
But as soon as I try to run or debug a vb application a system security error apears.
We have an ASP.net application that currently sits on a server that runs IIS and sql server. We are spliting IIS and SQL server into 2 seperate machines. I believe I have the connection string okay as I can see the entries in the security log on the sql server machine however it keeps saying aspnet user invalid user or invalid password. What gives with this. We put .net on the sql server however this just added the aspnet user to the machine. Do I need to create an aspnet user inside the sql server and give it control of the dbases as well? I am running this using the personal web server not IIS on a server. I have a project on my desktop and am using the "local" IIS or personal web server that comes with visual studio out of the box. What kills me is that when I put the project on a real IIS server that has sql server on the same machine I have no issues. However when I split the dbase and the IIS apart onto 2 servers I get this aspnet invalid user or invalid password. HELP
If possible to connect our remote server from my end ?.what r the possiblities is there.tell me some ideas,i already tried it to register our remote server database thru ODBC but it not connected properly but i ve tried in our intranet/network it's working fine.
Hi all,I need some help to access an SQL db on another machine. I am using VB.NETand remoting to make a client/server connection...although I don't thinkthis is relevant to the question.I have been asked to help with a small db project that will reside on ouroffice server and have approx. 5 users.I have installed a copy of MSDE on my development machine and plan on doingthe same on my office 'server'....in fact it may well already be on there. Ialso have another testbed to act as the client.Because I don't really know what I'm doing...........I have copied the dbcreated on my client to the server. I have done this by 'cheating'. I usethe VB.NET IDE to create the correctly named db under the sql server. I thengo to this file in windows explorer and write over it (and the .LDF) withthe file from the client. When I try to connect to this db remotely I get a fail to connect errorabout not recognising 'localmachinenameguest'...sorry, not the exact errorwording. I can provide this if it will be helpful. Can anyone point me in the right direct?I don't have any sql/db tools other than anything that is included with MSDE(which I don't think is much).I will be posting other Q's for any experts out there! Thanks in advance.Phil
if i can somehow load/copy a sql directory with mdf etc on pcs shipped to our customers with our app, but sql isnt installed/running on the shipped pc, can our customers' sql instances running on their existing machines "see/use" our shipped database, assuming the hard drive on the shipped pc can be made to look like a mapped/remote drive? We wonder about 2000 and 2005.
I am using Mysql ODBC 3.51 and/or 5.1 connection . this works fine with DTS But it hangs when I use with SSIS ... MS Visual Studio is giving message like " MS Visual Studio is Busy"
I've just started to learn to use Visual Studio, and has come to database access. I ran into this errormessage:
access denied for user <machine name>ASPNET
The book I'm using just only say that I have to grant the ASPNET user account permissions before the Web application will have access to a SQL database. ... Seems clear at first glance ... but I lack a "how to" ...!

I've tried to search the net for solutions ... several thousands of pages came up ... indicating that I'm far from the first who have this problem. ... So after I now have spend hours reading, without finding any useful ansver to the question. ...
So let me just tell the most popular answers. (So You don't repeat something I allready have read hundreds of times.): This question has been asked before Yes, true answer, but it doesn't help.
See the FAQ If it was stated were in the FAQ to look it could have been useful.
Use something called "enterprise manager" (WIN XP pro, don't have this, though.) I use WIN XP pro, so that answer dosn't help me either.
Im getting ASP.Net 2.0 Beta 2 setup on my home machine to kick around with. Im assuming this error means i have SqlServer Express mis-configured for integrated security. if so, how do i go about making sure that the ASPNET user has at least read access to the Database? I'm creating one of my first asp.net pages, and it accesses an MS SQL database. It runs fine locally, but if you go to it remotely through a web browser, you get an exception saying that the database login failed for user ASPNET.My brother told me to do the following in SQL Server Managment studio. It seems I don't have that program installed, so I did it from the SQL command prompt.CREATE LOGIN [bigblueASPNET] FROM WINDOWSuse AdventureWorkscreate user [bigblueASPNET](Where "bigblue" is the computer name and "AdventureWorks" is the database my asp.net web page reads from). This only partially fixed the problem - now when you open the page remotely and try to access the DB I get an error message saying that permission to use the SELECT command is denied.I searched on these forums, and found this:http://forums.asp.net/69166/ShowPost.aspxFor future reference, let's call what my brother told me "Method 1" and what the previous poster did as "Method 2."I haven't tried method 2 because I don't know exactly what I am giving ASPNET permission to do. Does method 2 enable ASPNET to do anything to any database? It seems method 1 is more secure, as from the commands I could already tell it only has permission to access AdventureWorks. So, I'd prefer to use method 1. Can anyone tell me what further commands I can use to give ASPNET permission to do specific actions? If I can't figure out method 1 and have to do method 2, how can I undo what I did in method 1?Thanks!
I have installed MS SQL 2005 in my system. I have created one database in my server. When iam running my application with this connections it is working fine in my local system. When i uploaded the database to some where dataserver, Iam not getting the connectins due to no remote access .
Some body suggested that to start the SQL browser in the SQL Server Configuration Manager.
I go there n tried to start the service when i put the service properties to Automatic or Manual i am getting the error message that is saying that the service is disabled cannot start automatically.

SQL Database in my application with windows authentication rejects accessing after deploying and remote access 1- My web applications databese access is windows authentication 2- In developing area there is no problem for accessing database 3- After deploying to another server there is problem accessing database: Cannot open user default database. We log ship our production database tansaction logs to a secondary database on a separate remote domain.
Incidentally, this was not set up via the "Ship Transaction Logs" wizard, but instead we had to use the various system stored procedures after restoring a copy of the database on the remote domain in standby mode.
We now have an issue where users are unable to access the remote secondary database without having sysadmin privileges. Clearly we want to avoid this!
We want to be able to use Windows Authentication mode on the server of the secondary database. But since the two domains differ, is it possible to even achieve this?
How can we set up read-only access for users on the secondary database without giving them sysadmin privileges?
- When I disable "allow remote connections to this server" from server properties>connection page, I can still remotely connect to the server from SSMS...so what is the impact of enable/disabling it?
- what is the impact of changing the remote query timeout (on the same page) from default value?
Hi, I have a test database and need to to include the aspnet.mdf into my database. I have generated a script for the aspnet.mdf, but don't know how to run/include this into my own test database. 1. Is there any magical sql-command that do the job in a clean way for me? 2. How can I change the name of aspnet in that auto generated script, if needed at all? I have: SQL server Express Edition 2005, Visual Web Developer Express Edition 2008

I am having problems connecting to the database. I am trying to use Membership API and for some reason it will no longer connect to the database. I previously had Visual Studio 2005 Standard Edition and it worked just fine, until I tried to install MS SQL Express. I have tried the aspnet_regsql and sqlcmd InstallCommon.sql and both times I received a named pipe error. I look at the configuration and it said named pipes enabled.
I eventually gave up after trying for two days and removed MS SQL Express, but now I am still getting the same error. I tried to uninstall all of the SQL editions and reinstall the MSDE that comes with VS 2005, but I am getting the same error.
When checking the ASP.NET Web Application and testing the provider I receive the following error: Could not establish a connection to the database. If you have not yet created the SQL Server database, exit the Web Site Administration tool, use the aspnet_regsql command-line utility to create and configure the database, and then return to this tool to set the provider.
The security tab gives you the following error: There is a problem with your selected data store. This can be caused by an invalid server name or credentials, or by insufficient permission. It can also be caused by the role manager feature not being enabled. Click the button below to be redirected to a page where you can choose a new data store.
The following message may help in diagnosing the problem: Unable to connect to SQL Server database.
Running the sqlcmd in the command prompt I receive the following error: Sqlcmd: Error: Connection failure. SQL Native Client is not installed correctly. To correct this, run SQL Server Setup.
On my VWD 2005 Express, I have installed 2 SQL Server 2005 Express databases in the App_Data folder.I kind of remember these 2 databases were installed from Wrox web site or a zip file. Now we still useSQL Server 2000 databases for our ASP.net applications. I have downloaded the SQL Server 2005 Express. These 2 databases in the App_Data folder seem to work fine although I can not see them from theManagement Studio Express. My question is: How do I 'manually' create a new SQL Server 2005 database into the App_Data folder? TIA,Jeffrey
For MS Press Book, ADO.NET 2.0 Step by Step, 2005 Edition by Rebecco Riordan, installing the code samples created a ConfigDB.exe file under SampleDBs folder. Running this exe file created a AdoStepByStep into the Database folder in SQL Server 2005 Express.
However, for ASP.NET 2.0 Step by Step, 2005 Edition, by George Shepherd, there is no Config.exe to install the ASPNETDB SQL Server 2005 Express database. I right clicked the Database folder to 'Attach' the database. But, the database just showed a 'c: ASPNETDB.MDF filfe path as a name. Further, running the aspx files in Chapters 7 and 12 showed a 'Timeout Expired' error msg, indicating something wrong with accessing the SQL Server database.
How can I run the aspx files in Chapters 7 and 12? How can I install the ASPNETDB?

Hi I have a web application and SQL database on separate SQL 2000 server. I have no admin rights to these servers. The ISP gave me a VPN connection and password to manager my database. If i run the application from my home computer WITH the VPN connected the application works fine. However if i disconnect the VPN or try to run the application from the remote server i get this error:SQL Server does not exist or access deniedI have researched this problem extensively and CANNOT find a solution. The application and SQL 2000 database server are on different computers. The SQL user id and password are different from the VPN connection's.My web config looks like this:<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <configuration> <appSettings> <add key="mappedname" value="username"/> <add key="mappedkey" value="password"/> </appSettings> <system.web> <globalization fileEncoding="utf-8" requestEncoding="utf-8" responseEncoding="utf-8" /> </system.web> </configuration> And the application connection string is as follows:Dim usersql As String = System.Configuration.ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings("mappedname") Dim passsql As String = System.Configuration.ConfigurationSettings.AppSettings("mappedkey") connectionString = "data source=xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx;initial catalog=databasename;" connectionString &= ";user id=" & usersql connectionString &= ";password=" & passsql I am obviously missing something. Not sure what or how to pass the permissions on properly. Can some kind soul please help me with this problemThank YouJeff
How can I access Sql server via a remote access tools. I want to be able to use somekind of software to be able to work on a server as if I am physically there. I would appreicate your input about this issue.
Hi all, I encounter a problem of unable to access Remote Server after i placed my web application into the web server. An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it.) So I googled and tried lot of different ways of connecting.By piped name, IP, trying instance which that server don't even have one :X.I also tried typing in cmd > telnet localhost 1433It appeared that the telnet fail, i tried it on other machine, it works. So is it cause by denied of access through that port?I checked at the sql client network, it show 1433, i check the server too, it show 1433.I also checked if there's any firewall, it appear there is no firewall at all.The sql server i trying to connect is SQL 2000, it run by Windows Server 2003 Any advise or more information you needed to help me solve this problem? Thanks
