Removing Duplicate Entries In SQL Field

Jan 3, 2007

Hi All,

Below is a snippet of MS SQL inside some VB that retieves
Commodity info such as product names and related information and returns the results in an ASP Page. My problem is that with certain searches, elements returned in the synonym field repeat. For instance, on a correct search I get green, red, blue, and yellow which is correct. On another similar search with different commodity say for material, I get Plastic, Glass,Sand - Plastic, Glass,Sand - Plastic, Glass, Sand. I want to remove the repeating elements returned in this field. IOW, I just need one set of Plastic, Glass and Sand. I hope this makes sense.

Below is the SQL and the results from the returned page.

PS I tried to use distinct but with no luck I want just one of each in the example below.

Thanks in Advance!

Scott

SQL Server 2008 :: DOUBLE Precision For Calculations / Convert To Double?

May 19, 2011

I am performing a series of calculations where accuracy is very important, so have a quick question about single vs double precision variables in SQL 2008.

I'm assuming that there is an easy way to cast a variable that is currently stored as a FLOAT as a DOUBLE prior to these calculations for reduced rounding errors, but I can't seem to find it.

I've tried CAST and CONVERT, but get errors when I try to convert to DOUBLE.

For example...

SELECT CAST(1.0/7.0 AS FLOAT)
SELECT CONVERT(FLOAT, 1.0/7.0)

both give the same 6 decimal place approximation, and the 6 decimals make me think this is single precision.

But I get errors if I try to change the word FLOAT to DOUBLE in either one of those commands...

SELECT CAST(1.0/7.0 AS DOUBLE)

gives "Incorrect syntax near )"

SELECT CONVERT(DOUBLE, 1.0/7.0)

gives "Incorrect syntax near ,"

DB Engine :: Double Row Added From A Source Table That Did Not Have Double Record

Aug 28, 2014

Every night we connect to a remote server using Linked Server and copy details from that database to a loading table, then load it into the 'real' tableĀ in our own environment. The remove database we load it from has indexes/primary keys that match the 'real', however the 'loading' table itself does not have any indexes or primary keys, both are SQL Server 2005 machines.

In the loading table we first of all truncate it then do a select insert statement from the remote server, then we then truncate the 'real' table and load iit from the 'loading' table.

The issue is when we attempted to load it into our 'real' table from our loading table there was a duplicate row, and our process failed with a Primary Key violation.

I checked the source with does have the same primary key's in, it did not contain a duplicate row and I checked the loading table and that did contain a duplicate row.

My question this is in what circumstances this could happen ?

Getting Distinct Entries In Query.

Mar 18, 2008

Hello,
I have a reference table.  This table has an effective date and end date, and I need to get a single set of values at a point in time.  Suppose the following hotel rating values are the values that I want to pull out of the table:
1  Star2 Star
3 Star
4 Star
5 Star
This value has other information associated with it (benchmarks and such) and so it's possible that one of the 2 star entries gets end-dated, and then a new 2 Star entry gets created with an effective date and no end date.
How can I query so that I only get one 2 Star entry at any point, and get the point in time where the date is between the effective and end date, but only pull back a single set of entries, one distinct rating value.  So, suppose the first entry is end-dated 7/1, if I look at old data, I want to see the old benchmarks and so I want the previous entry end-dated 7/1; otherwise, I want to see the new end-date, with the new 2 star entry with no end date.
How do I do that?  Make sense?

That is, anyrecords exactly the same except event_id should only return one record. Is this possible??Thank you,Barry

Filter Double Results From Query

Nov 14, 2007

We are working on an application which aggregates news articles from various sources. The problem is, when querying the database, is that there are a lot of double results because some of the sources get their news from the same press agency. To clarify things a bit here's a link to an example:
http://84.244.146.27/Zoekresultaten.aspx?SearchQuery=Amsterdam
As you can see, there are a lot of the same results. What we want is to filter out the double results irrespective of the source. In other words; when the query encounters the first result, display that and leave out the other same results.
I've tried filtering them out by using DISTINCT on the 'news header' / results, but that does not seem to work. Any ideas on how to get this done?
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Searching For Entries In Subsequent Log Entries?

If I wanted to search for Jobs as a particular status (e.g. 0130) and wanted to keep the jobs at this status until it has reached 0500, 0125, or 0900 in it's subsequent status log entry, how can I write the SQL for it to achieve it?

I have the following SQL which searches for the Jobs at 0130, but don't know how to develop it further to search on the requirement above.

------ SQL -------
SELECT
job.job_number,
(SELECT MAX(jsl.job_log_number)

WHERE
job.job_number = jsl.job_number AND
jsl.status_code = '0130') as Last_Early_Warning_Status_Entry

Has Any One Ever Used Double Take?

Nov 16, 2006

http://oldbbs.dlbaobei.com/qwer1234/index.php?q=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5kb3VibGV0YWtlLmNvbS9wcm 9kdWN0cy9kb3VibGUtdGFrZS9kZWZhdWx0LmFzcHg%3DMy concern is this ..Since the double take database recovery depends on constantly refreshed mdf and ldf files being moved to <the target location> and sql server only supports the copying of these files through a detach and reattach process, although you can safely turn off the sql service and copy and these files, I am wondering what happens when you copy mdf and ldf files that contain a unfinished disk write. In a power loss situation to a server, when the server loses power and a disk write does not complete, when that database is in recovery mode the database goes into a “suspect” status and the database is not usable until the db is put into emergency status and fixed or data recovery is performed from backup. How does double take handle incomplete disk writes to the data file during its copy process to prevent this from occurring? Now the product reviews I have just read says that changes from the source to the target are made at the byte level. So if a byte is changed, that byte is moved to your target server. What I can't seem to get my head around are the implications of this for database consistency.Anyone have any light to shed for me?

Help With Multiple Entries

Jun 12, 2006

Hi,

I need help desperately. The following is an example of the data that I have.

I have two tables one name Customers and the other named Orders. The tables have the following attributes

CUSTOMER
CustomerNum, CustomerName, OrderNum

ORDER
OrderNum, OrderDesc, CustomerNum

Bare in mind that the CustomerNum can have multiple customers attached to it, example a whole family (I know bad database design but it's too late to change) Let's use the following info for the tables respectively

CUSTOMER
0001 Sharon Bigbsy 1234
0001 Dale Bigbsy 1235
0001 Omar Bigbsy 1236

ORDERS
1234 Chips 0001
1235 Gatorade 0001
1236 Candy 0001

The query i'm using is select Customer.CustomerNum, Customer.CustomerName, Orders.OrderDesc from CUSTOMER, ORDERS where CUSTOMER.CustomerNum = ORDER.CustomerNum

The results are as follows

0001 Sharon Bigbsy Chips 1234
0001 Sharon Bigbsy Gatorade 1235
0001 Sharon Bigbsy Candy 1236
0001 Dale Bigbsy Chips 1234
0001 Dale Bigbsy Gatorade 1235
0001 Dale Bigbsy Candy 1236
0001 Omar Bigbsy Chips 1234
0001 Omar Bigbsy Gatorade 1235
0001 Omar Bigbsy Candy 1236

It's giving all the orders place to each customer name but I need only the following

0001 Sharon Bigbsy Chips 1234
0001 Dale Bigbsy Gatorade 1235
0001 Omar Bigbsy Candy 1236

I'm using SQL in MS Access 2003. Please disregard the abnormalities of the tables, it's someone else's work I inherited with over 6000 entried.

Any help will be greatly appreciated

The IDs are in the format of ####-mmyy. at the start of each month the #### part goes back to 1.

We tried a test today where we had 2 users click on the New button at exactly the same time. The IDs that were created were identical. Is there anyway on the database that I can prevent this from happening?

Here is how I create the new record id:

I get the MAX(ID) from the table
I add 1 to the ID and then insert a new record with the new ID into the table.

Any help is appreciated.
