Replication Agents All Say Server Execution Failed
Aug 21, 2006
This is the most frustrating error I've ever encountered.
I can get no more info from sql server besides "server execution failed". It gives this error when starting the snapshot, distribution, and log reader agents.
This server has been working in this configuration for over a year. We made no changes except restarted the server. This is a windows 2003 server with sql server 2000 running all the latest patches and windows updates.

Hi all replication experts...
I have created transactional replication on my servers (production server and backup server) and created pull subscription at the backup server. On my production server that also is a distributor and publisher there exist two agents, Snapshot agent and Log reader in the Publishers folder under replication Monitor.
There are also another agent with the backup server name and database name: BackServ:DBName having the type Pull and 'No replicated transactions are available' as Last Action. My question is: What is this? Must it be there?
Grateful for answers
Best,
/M

Hi all,
I have encountered some problems in scheduling the replication agents but before explaining that let me give a small background of the current DB landscape.
It is implemented as Star topology or re-publisher topology with the publisher and the subscriber configured on SQL Server 2000 and it consists of ShareDB on SQL Server 2005 which acts as the re-publisher of data. All other databases publish articles to ShareDB which in turn re-publishes to the databases which subscribes for the article. The topology is using a remote distributor on SQL Server 2005 to offload the replication agent jobs processing from the OLTP environment. The distributor job agent is running continuously and it is shared for a specific database in case of Snapshot replication. And all the Transactional publications will have a separate distributor agent. At present the replications agents are scheduled on both the publisher and ShareDB.
Now, I am trying to enforce one way scheduling on the publisher side which will start the snapshot agent for the corresponding publication on ShareDB after the distributor agent transfers the data from the snapshot folder to the subscribers. This approach is effective and more reliable in the sense that data synchronization will happen immediately after the distributor agent transfers the data to ShareDB.
The following are the issues related to scheduling the replication agent on the publisher only.
1. I have included sp_start_job stored procedure after the run agent step in the shared distributor job agent steps to start the snapshot agent of the corresponding publication on ShareDB after the distributor agent transfers the data to ShareDB. Since the distributor agent is running continuously in our scenario, the next step is not getting executed and so the job agent of the corresponding publication on ShareDB is not started.
2. It is also necessary to specify either the job name or the job id in sp_start_job stored procedure to start the job agent. With the replication setup configured in the aforementioned fashion, how is it possible to invoke the snapshot job agent of the corresponding publication on the second link (from ShareDB) dynamically after the distributor agent on the first link is completed?
Thanks a lot,
Barry

Can I have multiple SQL Server Agents running concurrently?
I would like to have 10 instances of database running on my local SQL Server - each of these are Merge Replication to a unique database located offsite.
Do they all run through one SQL Server Agent?
If they do would this be a slow process as, I think, the SQL Server Agent queues the replications pending.
Thanks,
Bianca

Hi all,
I have 5 laptops, 1 laptop with SQL Server 2000 and the other 4 with SQL Server MSDE Rel A. I had a "Merge Replication" scheme that I had to set up. The laptop with 2000 will be the main Publisher/distributor and publishes/merges to two of the MSDE laptops(these laptops have pull subscriptions that pull from the 2000 laptop). These 2 MSDE laptops in turn Re-publish their data to the last 2 laptops and my scheme ends there. I have succesfully been able to Script this entire "Merge Replication" scheme, and I ran it. It creates all Components needed for my scheme to work.
1 issue though. It doesnt kick start the agents  , so the replication scheme is just dormant.
Does anyone have any examples of scripts that I could use to kick off all the agents (snapshot, merge agents etc) and maybe to stop them too. I seriously need this, because we will need to have the entire process scripted.
Thanks
'Wale
p.s.
Also does anyone have sample scripts to alter settings for the SQL SERVER AGENT, for example altering its "Log On" parameter to allow a particular user with Admin privileges and also to switch its start mode to "Automatic"

During an upgrade, we had problems with PK errors on sp_MSget_repl_commands. I recreated the SP with the varbinary characteristic as we have seen in many posts and it was sucessful in starting. However, the sp now appears as a 'user' sp, not a 'system' sp, however I an not sure that is a real issue.
The problem I am seeing is that none of the agents are appearing in replication monitor under their agent folders. Replication appears to be working fine and the publications are showing on the distributor in the Replication Monitor - Publication folder under the appropriate publisher. But all of the agent specific folders (i.e. Snapshot agent, distribution agent, etc) are empty.
Another interesting point, is that if replication fails, the failure 'X' shows up on the Agents folder as well as the publisher, but again, no sign of the agent in the folder.
Thoughts?

Hi all
I have SQL 2000 SP4 running on a W2K server SP4.
The server acts as a subcriber and publisher and acts as its own distributor.
Each publication uses its own distribution agent and is set to loop.
There are 4 queued updating subscriptions on this box.
When running 3rd party tools to determine open active ports, the replication executables (distrib and logreader) are connecting to local server multiple times. Easily 15+ established connections plus many more waits.
Everything connects to 1433 then opens a new port.
Is this because of the queued updating?
Replication is functioning as it should without any problems.
I even checked our 2 main distribution servers which only act as distributors and there is not one connection from replication to itself.
Any insight would be appreciated
Thx
John

Hi,
when I try to run a package as Job I receive the following error
Executed as user: SITAsqlserveragent_svc. The package execution failed. The step failed.
Has someone an idea how I can get more detailed information about WHY the job failed? Tha package was created in BIDS and imported into MSDB. Running the package from the Integration Services context menu works, but starting it as a job from SQL Server Agent fails. Any idea or hint what the reason could be or how I can get more information?
Thanks in advance

Hello, I've configured SQL Server 2000 for merge replication and am trying to start the snapshot agent for the publication and after about 20 minutes of it trying to start, it gives up with this error.
Server execution failed
There is no more information in the event viewer. I've tried it with a bunch of different subscriptions. SQL Server and SQL Agent are running under a local account which has access to the replcation data directory. SQL Agent is running.
I'm Running SQL 2000 SP3.

I am replicating a stored procedure execution, which builds and executes the following dynamic SQL command:
IF EXISTS (select * from MyDB..sysfiles sf (nolock) where name = 'MyDB_201201')
ALTER DATABASE [MyDB] REMOVE FILE [MyDB_201201]
IF EXISTS (select * from MyDB..sysfilegroups sfg (nolock)
where groupname = 'MyDB_201201' and sfg.groupname not in(
SELECT distinct fg.name file_group_name
[Code] ....
I can run this SP with no errors on both the publisher and the subscriber. However, when I try to replicate the execution of this SP, I get an error in replication monitor:
ALTER DATABASE statement not allowed within multi-statement transaction. (Source: MSSQLServer, Error number: 226)
How can I change my code to workaround this? Perhaps some explicit transactions?

I have created and deployed my first report. It renders fine for me and the other database admin. When others attempt to view it, we get the error
Query execution failed for data set 'periods'. (rsErrorExecutingCommand), For more information about this error navigate to the report server on the local server machine, or enable remote errors
Initially, We created a local group on the machine that hosts both the database and webserver and added the individuals to that group. Then, within SRS Report manager, we added that group to the Browswer role of the report.
The error message was slightly different, in that it couldn't even open the Datasource.
We then added an individual to the database as dbreader, and got the above message. It apprently is starting to render, and when it encounters the first query (dataset "periods", which populates a drop down list for a parameter), it chokes. BTW, the Periods dataset executes a stored procedure dbo.Period_List that has no parameters. It returns a list of reporting periods.
I could not figure out how to "enable remote errors" or find an error log on the server. The C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQL.3Reporting ServicesLogFiles Log files did not appear to record any errors.
Please advise!

All the logins with sysadmin role are locked out in one of the SQL server. Also in that instance Logon trigger is implemented which allows only certain users with Windows Authentication to logon.
This server is converted into single user mode by using command prompt. Now we are attempting to connect to SQLServer using command sqlcmd -S FTCPU3239 (since we do not have any other login) and create a new login with sysadmin role but are refused due to logon trigger. it says Login failed for login 'DomainNameUserName' due to trigger execution.

I am running SQL 2008 Enterprize Edition with SP1 on Windows 2008. I am trying to set up replication. I have completed the following:
1. Created distribution Database
2. Created publisher
3. Granted SQL Agent access to the ...MSSQL100Com folder to execute the agent_exe files
4. Granted SQL Agent access to ...MSSQLinn where the subsystem_dll files are located
5. Granted SQL Agent write permissions to ...MSSQL
epldata in order the write the bcp files
Each time I try to initialize the snapshot, I get the following errors in the SQL Agent Log
1. Log Step.......cannot be run because the LogReader subsystem failed to load. The job has been suspended.
2. Log Step.......cannot be run because the Snapshot subsystem failed to load. The job has been suspended.
I found posts where the records in the msdb.dbo.syssubsystems pointed to different folders than where the dll and exe files are located. So, I checked that, but they are correct.
The SQL Agent has sysadmin on the SQL Server and is using a windows service account.
I believe it is a security issue because I can run the executables from the command prompt to generate the snapshot for the publication. Have I missed the forest for the trees?

Let say I've 4 server with MS SQL 2000 installed and I want all of them having the same data. So I'm using merge replication by assign one of them as publisher/distributor.
The problem is when ( let say ) server that have been assign as publisher/distributor down then all the other server cannot make replication.
My idea was to make it replicate to other available server ( among them ) if replication to main server failed.
Is it possible ?
If possible how to do it ?
Thanks.

Hi,
I have a group of reports using a shared datasource. Going to the preview of the report works fine in the report designer, but when I try and view it from a browser (deployed on a website), it gives the error:
"An error has occurred during report processing.
Query execution failed for data set 'DataSet1_ticketInfo'.
Failed to parse SQL.[long sql query here]"
If there's a problem with it, I don't get why it works in preview mode. I'm using SQL server 2005.
Thanks.

I am trying to design package which would copy all tables and stored procedures from one server to another. It used to be simple task in SQL 2000, there was wizard. However the new wizard does not work...
I wrote SSIS package, but when I execute I get the following error: "Can not apply value null to property Login..."
Any idea? It seems to me that this new SQl2005 is not that simple to use like 2000. 2000 was a great product. I am considering to rollback to 2000. Very frustrated with the new one...

I have several reports that are working great on my report server. However, one of my reports "ReportB" is launched as a hyperlink from "ReportA" through the use of a custom function which uses a little javascript to simply open a new browser to the URL of ReportB along with passing a parateter through that URL. I can get it all to work great on my local machine I'm using for development. But when I deploy it to my production server I get the following problems (Please note ReportA works fine, it is ReportB that gives me these problems):
1. When running report in web browser on my local machine - An error has occurred during report processing. Query execution failed for data set 'FDQW'. For more information about this error navigate to the report server on the local machine, or enable remote errors.
2. When running the report in a web browser on the report server itself (also is the SQL server containing the data) - An error has occurred during report processing. Query execution failed for data set 'FDQW'. Must declare the scalar variable "@DocNo".
Like I said above... when I deploy to my local RS on my development machine I get neither of the above problems. I have tried changing SQL roles, RS Execution accounts, database connection credentials, all kinds of permission realated things and can't get it to work.
I am not using a stored procedure as a data source. Here is a copy of my data set query if it helps:
SELECT DocumentHeaders.DocNo, DocumentHeaders.SoldToCompany, DocumentHeaders.SoldToContact, DocumentHeaders.SalesRep,
DocumentHeaders.DocName, DocumentHeaders.DocDate, DocumentHeaders.GrandTotal, DocumentItems.LineNumber, DocumentItems.Description,
DocumentItems.QtyTotal, DocumentItems.ExtendedPrice
FROM DocumentHeaders INNER JOIN
DocumentItems ON DocumentHeaders.ID = DocumentItems.DocID
WHERE (DocumentHeaders.DocNo = @DocNo) AND (LEN(CONVERT(varchar, DocumentItems.Description)) > 0)
Thank you
