Replications And Stored Procedures And Sa Account

I have just setup my first Transactional replication between two
servers. Next I needed to test what would happen if the live server
went down.
I disconnected the live server and connected it to the backup server
(doing all the ip setup bits as well). Then I tried running my web app.
The web app ran great. I can look at the data that was replicated. My
problem is that I cannot seem to add any data. Ever time I try to run a
stored procedure, the web app crashes with 'sa' account login failed. I
tried running the stored procedures through SQL Query Analyzer, and it
says the same thing.
I know there is no problem with the sa account, as I can view the data
using this. There are no permissions set on any of the objects in the
database. The only thing I can think of is that the replication has
somehow disabled the ability to add data to the replicated database.
Can anyone point out what is happening?

I want to know the differences between SQL Server 2000 storedprocedures and oracle stored procedures? Do they have differentsyntax? The concept should be the same that the stored proceduresexecute in the database server with better performance?Please advise good references for Oracle stored procedures also.thanks!!

During install of SQL Server 2005, we can of course use a domain account or the built-in system account for running the services. I lean toward domain for obvious reaons but would like to know a +/- to each option and why I'd choose one over the other and what consequences or limitations one may encounter if I choose one over the other.

Hi,
This Might be a really simple thing, however we have just installed SQL server 2005 on a new server, and are having difficulties with the set up of the Store Procedures. Every time we try to modify an existing stored procedure it attempts to save it as an SQL file, unlike in 2000 where it saved it as part of the database itself.

I have 3 server in 3 locations, I need to add one Field to one of my table. When I try with "sp_repladdcolumn" I got this error
"Schema replication failed because database <Database name> on server <Server Name> is not the original Publisher of table <Table name>"
please help me on this.

We have two seperate domains (connected via a VPN Tunnel over the internet) We want to replicate one table with a push publication between these two domains (both have sql server 2005 default instances) how do you figure out what ports to open up in order to be able to do transactional replication (of one table) between them????

I’ve recently taken on a SQL Server related assignment with a client running a very large database in a very poor environment.
We have a 200GB database with virtually no failover support. I’m interested in transactional replication, hardware redundancy, failover support and find that before moving forward on that we probably need to seriously re-evaluate our whole logical and physical design. My experience is more on the TSQL side rather than full dba hardware, optimization, tuning areas. Any suggestions for quickly ramping up my skills on the dba side (books, courses, etc.) and also recommendations for short term support resources would be appreciated. I’m want to make sure I cover all my bases with regard to future scalability, disaster recovery, high availability etc.

Dear All,
Greetings!!
I have installed SQL server 2005 Express and SQL server Mobile, and I was reading the Books online section to find out how to maintain the two databases consistancy.
Found : replication Option.
Problem : It only shows Local Subscriptions in SQL Server and In SQL Server Mobile only Subscription. I dont get a Publication Option.
Please correct if Wrong : SQL Serv Mobile is the one should Publish and SQL Serv hould Subscribe ya?
Please help me to sort this out.

Using SQL 2005, SP2. All of a sudden, whenever I create any stored procedures in the master database, they get created as system stored procedures. Doesn't matter what I name them, and what they do.
For example, even this simple little guy:
CREATE PROCEDURE BOB
AS
PRINT 'BOB'
GO
Gets created as a system stored procedure.
Any ideas what would cause that and/or how to fix it?

Hi,
I need a solution ( if this is possible) to automatically generate create scripts for my replications on our live server and put that into a file.
I dont have permission to scrip that from the Enterprise Managger, but the support have and can make a job in the live server for this.
So that would be enough for me to put a job to the live server what puts the scripts to a file.
I want to use the same replications in my test environmnet, and they are always changing and I dont want to wait for the support.
I have an idea, but I still dont try it:
If I run a trace, when i push the generate sql script button, maybe I can get the code for the generating the create script.

Is there a simple solution for this problem, or I have to get it from the trace ?

Hi All,
i need help. i have a merge replication running every 10 minutes. the replication is for 1 database consisting around 50 tables and all 50 tables are marked as article to be published. let's say the publisher is server A and the subscriber is server B. for explanation purpose, let's pick 1 table from the database, let's say table X
in server A, there are applications running that insert and update table X. in server B, there are applications running that select and delete table X. table X at average, has tens of thousands rows.
now comes the problem, every 10 minutes whenever the sql merge agent is running, sometimes whenan application insert a row to table X in server A, it returns an error : "Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.". when i stop the replication (delete the subscriber), the row insertion to table X in server A seems fine. then i come to a doubtful conclusion, that the timeout error happened because when the insert statement executes, the replication locks the table for merging.
could somebody verify this? if my conclusion is true, then how am i suppose to do this? (see bold text above). really2 appreciate the help

Now the problem is if he logins with his id and password and try to execute the stored procedure it gives an error message
Server: Msg 15153, Level 16, State 1, Procedure xp_cmdshell, Line 1
The xp_cmdshell proxy account information cannot be retrieved or is invalid. Verify that the '##xp_cmdshell_proxy_account##' credential exists and contains valid information.
....so this mean the login is not able to see the proxy account.So what I did is I created a job and then in the job owner tab I have selected his login and then created a step with the type operating system (CmdExec) as I need to just execute the stored procedure and used the proxy account that I have created.
so I gave the command -- exec <stored procedure> --.
But this job fails and gives the error message as
[298] SQLServer Error: 536, Invalid length parameter passed to the SUBSTRING function. [SQLSTATE 42000]....
So now ....first My question is am I doing in a right way....if its right then why Iam not able to execute the stored procedure.
If there is any other way through which I can execute the stored procedure using a proxy account for the logins who are not sys admins....please do let me know.....

How do I search for and print all stored procedure names in a particular database? I can use the following query to search and print out all table names in a database. I just need to figure out how to modify the code below to search for stored procedure names. Can anyone help me out?

Seems like I'm stealing all the threads here, : But I need to learn :) I have a StoredProcedure that needs to return values that other StoredProcedures return.Rather than have my DataAccess layer access the DB multiple times, I would like to call One stored Procedure, and have that stored procedure call the others to get the information I need. I think this way would be more efficient than accessing the DB multiple times. I have MSSQL 2005. On earlier versions of MSSQL saving a stored procedure wasn't a confusing action. However, every time I try to save my completed stored procedure (parsed successfully ) I'm prompted to save it as a query on the hard drive.
How do I cause the 'Save' action to add the new stored procedure to my database's list of stored procedures?

I have been running a script in SQL Server 2000 as sa also as a Active Directory user who has administrator rights (I tested both approaches SQL Server then Windows Authentication) in Query Analyser which grants execute rights to the stored procedures within the database instance and Query Analyser does not give any errors when I run the script. I have made sure that each transaction has a go after it. I then return to Enterprise Manager, check the rights (I apply them to roles so that when we create another SQL Server user we just grant him/her rights to the role) and discover that the role has not been granted the rights. I seems to be occurring only with 2 of the procedures. Is there a known bug that might be causing this?

We recently upgraded to SQL Server 2005. We had several stored procedures in the master database and, rather than completely rewriting a lot of code, we just recreated these stored procedures in the new master database.
For some reason, some of these stored procedures are getting stored as "System Stored Procedures" rather than just as "Stored Procedures". Queries to sys.Objects and sys.Procedures shows that these procs are being saved with the is_ms_shipped field set to 1, even though they obviously were not shipped with the product.
I can't update the sys.Objects or sys.Procedures views in 2005.
What effect will this flag (is_ms_shipped = 1) have on my stored procedures?
Can I move these out of "System Stored Procedures" and into "Stored Procedures"?

I'm start to work with SSIS.
We have a lot (many hundreds) of old (SQL Server2000) procedures on SQL 2005.
Most of the Stored Procedures ends with the following commands:
SET @SQLSTRING = 'SELECT * INTO ' + @OutputTableName + ' FROM #RESULTTABLE'
EXEC @RETVAL = sp_executeSQL @SQLSTRING
How can I use SSIS to move the complete #RESULTTABLE to Excel or to a Flat File? (e.g. as a *.csv -File)
I found a way but I think i'ts only a workaround:
1. Write the #Resulttable to DB (changed Prozedure)
2. create data flow task (ole DB Source - Data Conversion - Excel Destination)
Does anyone know a better way to transfer the #RESULTTABLE to Excel or Flat file?

I have several DTS jobs that runs well as a job with my nt login account for the SQL agent service startup account, but if I use the System account
they fail with this error.
" Error opening datafile: Access is denied. Error source: Microsoft Data Transformation Services Flat File Rowset Provider"
The data has change access to the System account under the NT security.

Hi all, i hope you can help me.
Basically a dts package has been setup that pulls in data from another companies server, this data requires to be on-demand i.e individual users can pull in updates of the data when they require it.
I am using xp_cmdshell and dtsrun to pull in the data. This obviouly works fine for me as i am a member of sysadmin.
Books online quotes " SQL Server Agent proxy accounts allow SQL Server users who do not belong to the sysadmin fixed server role to execute xp_cmdshell"
So i went to the SQL Server Agent Properties 'Job System' tab and unchecked 'Non-sysadmin job step proxy account' and entered a proxy account.
The proxy account has been setup as a Windows user with local administrator privilages and even a member of the sysadmin server role - just in case.
Now when i log onto the db with my test account - a non-sysadmin - and attempt to run the stored proc to import the data i recieved the message 'EXECUTE permission denied on object 'xp_cmdshell', database 'master', owner 'dbo' '
hmm... so basically i have either misunderstood BoL or there is something not quite right in my setup.
I have search the net for a few days now and yet i can find no solution.
Can anyone help?

I am writing a set of store procedures (around 30), most of them require the same basic logic to get an ID, I was thinking to add this logic into an stored procedure.
The question is: Would calling an stored procedure from within an stored procedure affect performance? I mean, would it need to create a separate db connection? am I better off copying and pasting the logic into all the store procedures (in terms of performance)?

Hi all - I'm trying to optimized my stored procedures to be a bit easier to maintain, and am sure this is possible, not am very unclear on the syntax to doing this correctly. For example, I have a simple stored procedure that takes a string as a parameter, and returns its resolved index that corresponds to a record in my database. ie
exec dbo.DeriveStatusID 'Created'
returns an int value as 1
(performed by "SELECT statusID FROM statusList WHERE statusName= 'Created')
but I also have a second stored procedure that needs to make reference to this procedure first, in order to resolve an id - ie:
exec dbo.AddProduct_Insert 'widget1'
which currently performs:SET @statusID = (SELECT statusID FROM statusList WHERE statusName='Created')INSERT INTO Products (productname, statusID) VALUES (''widget1', @statusID)
I want to simply the insert to perform (in one sproc):
SET @statusID = EXEC deriveStatusID ('Created')INSERT INTO Products (productname, statusID) VALUES (''widget1', @statusID)
This works fine if I call this stored procedure in code first, then pass it to the second stored procedure, but NOT if it is reference in the second stored procedure directly (I end up with an empty value for @statusID in this example).
My actual "Insert" stored procedures are far more complicated, but I am working towards lightening the business logic in my application ( it shouldn't have to pre-vet the data prior to executing a valid insert).
Hopefully this makes some sense - it doesn't seem right to me that this is impossible, and am fairly sure I'm just missing some simple syntax - can anyone assist?

Hi there,BOL notes that in order for replication agents to run properly, theSQLServerAgent must run as a domain account which has privledges to loginto the other machines involved in replication (under "SecurityConsiderations" and elsewhere). This makes sense; however, I waswondering if there were any repercussions to using duplicate localaccounts to establish replication where a domain was not available.Anotherwords, create a local windows account "johndoe" on both machines(with the same password), grant that account access to SQL Server onboth machines, and then have SQL Server Agent run as "johndoe" on bothmachines. I do not feel this is an ideal solution but I havecircumstances under which I may not have a domain available; mypreliminary tests seem to work.Also, are there any similar considerations regarding the MSSQLSERVERservice, or can I always leave that as local system?Dave

i have created the folowing function but keep geting an error.
Only functions and extended stored procedures can be executed from within a function.
Why am i getting this error!

I have a situation that I have discovered in our QA database that I need to resolve. When I looked at the Activity Monitor for our server, I discovered that a process is running under a domain user account for one of our .Net applications. The problem is that that domain user account has not been created as a SQL login account on the server. I am trying to figure out how someone can log in to the database server with a domain user account that has not been added to SQL Server as a login account.
Does anyone have any insight on this? I don't like the idea of someone being able to create domain account that can access the database without me granting them specific access.
