Report Builder, SSAS, And Many-to-Many Relationships

Jul 18, 2007

Does Report Builder handle many-to-many relationships within an SSAS cube correctly? I can't seem to get it to. Using Adventure Works, here's an example of the problem I'm seeing.

- Create a new report in RB, opening the Adventure Works DW model
- Select one of the perspectives that includes the Sales Reason dimension (like Direct Sales)
- Select the Sales Reason entity in the Entities list and put the Sales Reason Type attribute into the report (making Sales Reason the primary entity)
- The Entities list will be reduced to show the Adventure Works Sales Reasons relationship (which maps to that underlying measure group)
- If you select the Adventure Works Sales Reasons relationship, you€™ll see the Internet Sales Order Details entity below it
- If you select the Sales Order Details entity, however, you€™ll only see the attributes that are in that dimension; you won€™t see any of the measures that exist in the measure groups that are related to it
- Based on that fact, you can€™t get to any of the measures in the cube (since the Sales Reason dimension is related to the other measure groups only through M-to-M relationships)

Of course, it may be that I just don't understand how the auto-generated report model for the SSAS cube is exposing the relationships and the entities that correspond to the Sales Reason dimension, the Sales Reasons measure group (the intermediate measure group for the M-to-M relationships to the other measure groups), etc.

Anyone seen this before or know that this is defined behavior? Seems that for any SSAS cube that includes M-to-M relationships, Report Builder just won't work...

Thanks!

SSAS Time Calculation In Report Builder

Mar 6, 2007

Has anyone been able to get time calculations to show up in Report Builder? I'm using the BI Wizard standard calculations for YTD & Period over period growth, but I can't figure out how to use them within Report Builder. They are available in Report Designer, however. I did find the info about assigning the calculations to a measure group. I tried that, but it didn't have any affect.

Any help is appreciated.

How To Add A Calculated Column In Report Builder Using A Model Based On A SSAS Cube

I am trying to add a calculated field / column in Report Builder when working with a Report Model built from anAnalysis Services Cube. I can create the calculated Field/Columns, but I get an error whenever I try to use it in a report.

Is there a way to create a report builder calculated column on report models built from a SSAS cube? Is this supported?

Report Builder - Filter Drop Down Order Not Always Correct

May 14, 2008

My Problem
=========
I have a problem with a parameter drop down that is on my report. On one report server (i.e. a SQL Server Reporting Server instance), the drop down data is ordered correctly. On another, it appears to be random.

The report is created using Report Builder v9.0.2047.0.

I have used SQL Server Profiler and I have found that an "order by" clause is appended on one of the report servers, while it is excluded on another.

About my Set-up
============
I have configured multiple report servers (i.e. SQL Server Reporting Server instances) on a single SQL Server 2005 instance. The SQL Server 2005 details are:
productversion = 9.00.3054.00
productlevel = SP2
edition = Standard Edition (64-bit)

Another post (http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=1379591&SiteID=1) puts this problem down to SP2. However, both my report servers are on the same SQL server instance.

I also see that Bob has a blog on a possible solution for this: http://blogs.msdn.com/bobmeyers/archive/2007/10/11/sorting-the-values-in-parameter-dropdowns-in-report-builder.aspx.
However, I would like to understand why the report is behaving differently.

Report Builder And Optional Parameters

Nov 30, 2006

Hi,

Is it possible to create optional parameters in Report Builder?

An *ordinary* parameter is created by marking a filter expression as "prompted". At run-time, the user will be asked to provide a value for this parameter (or accept a default value if it is available). This works fine. What I want is to let the user choose whether to provide a value, or leave the parameter empty. In latter case, the reports should not take the parameter into account and display all available data.

Example: I have a list of products grouped by the name of the supplier. I want users to be able to see the entire list, or narrow it down to one supplier only. So I create a free text parameter that will contain a part of the supplier's name. It works ok, but if parameter is left blank, or set to NULL, the report will display no data (all products always have their suppliers).

I tried to create a filter formula to check for empty value and bypass the filter if necessary, but the formula only allows me to use the parameter expression once. So I cannot check for empty value and apply the filter in the same expression.

As a last resort, I used the following workaround: created a new formula named "Enter 'ALL' to see all suppliers" that would return text constant "ALL". I then added another prompted filter expression for this field and grouped it with my supplier prompt using "Any of" group. User is now able to choose a supplier, or enter "ALL" to the second prompt field. This clumsy approach actually works, but then another problem emerges - although I mark both filter fields as Prompted, the Report Builder will forget this flag for one of the fields when the report is reopened. I think it could be a bug (we use SQL2005 SP1)

Anyway, it'd be nice if I could create an optional parameter as one expression, not two. Is there any way to do that?

TIA

Denis

Datetime Parameters In Report Builder Interchanges Days And Months :@

Mar 14, 2007

Community:

This is my scenario: a Cube in SSAS, dimension time with an attribute "cdate" defined as datetime, model deployed using "Generate Model" option of Report Server.

Querying in Report Builder: only _date attribute of time dimension is selected. Filter use _date fields , from ...to option is selected, from the calendar I select from 1 january 2007 to 10 january 2007, results a list of dates between 1 january 2007 to 1 October 2007!!!

When I select from 1 january 2007 to 15 january 2007 the list is correct!!!

Clearly it interchange days and months in first case, and do it right in second case.

What is it about? it's about Report Server settings? SQL Server settings? .Net Settings? Windows Settings?

What do I have to do ?

Analysis :: SSAS Doesn't Drop Old Index Files

Oct 4, 2012

After the incremental process and full process, SSAS doesn't drop the index files #.xxx.fact.map and #.xxx.fact.map.hdr in the file.0.dim folder. We now have all the versions from 3 to 5000 sitting in the folder. The DBA team only found this when the disk is running out of space recently.

We've already check the account running the SSAS has local admin to the server.

Is there any config setting that might cause this issue? If not, what could it be causing this issue.

The issue that I have now is that the file on the report server is not a .rdl file and if I simply save it as one and then bring it into VS to modify it the code file is a html structure rater than a XML file type.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

SSRS 2005 V SSAS 2000 Mutli-Select Parameters

Nov 2, 2007

Has anyone managed to crack getting multi-select parameters to work from an SSRS 2005 report which is querying an SSAS 2000 cube.

SSRS 2005 does support Multiselect, however SSRS 2000 did not. Given that i am querying an SSAS 2000 cube, i get the impression that i am also limited to SSRS 2000 functionality regarding to multi-select parameters.

Is there anyone out there that ever managed to get a wor around, say by using filters on a table or anything really that coud simulate the same behaviour....

Report Builder Using Report Model Based On Linked Server (Excel) - Primary Key?

Sep 6, 2007

I've created a linked server with a pretty basic Excel spreadsheet, and used this command to create a linked server to it:

sp_addlinkedserver ''XL_SPS_1', 'Excel', 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0', 'c:MyExcel.xls', null, 'Excel 8.0'

I want to use this as the data from which to build a report model. As linked servers don't show up in the Data Source View wizard, I created a view in SQL Server:

create view MyExcel
as
select * from XL_SPS_1...Sheet1$

Okay, great, now the view shows up in the DSV wizard and I can create the data source view. However, when I create a new report model based on this data source view, the Report Model Wizard tells me at "Create entities for all tables" that I've got an error when it processes dbo_MyExcel that "Table does not have a primary key."

I assume this is where the identifying attributes for the entities in the report model are taken from, so I really can't go further. Does anyone have an idea as to how to add a primary key to a linked server (Excel) in SQL 2005? Can this be done? Other than importing spreadsheet data to a SQL table, how can I get around this?

Thanks,

Possiblity / Instructions On How To Install Report Builder Locally Without Hitting Report Server

Feb 16, 2007

We have a remote business client who has a proxy server setup and this translates into receiving a 407 proxy authentication blocking error when attempting to download the report builder application for deployment off the report server which is housed locally with us. The proxy server does not allow them to download application type files off another site. At the moment, they would not like to disable the proxy for these users to allow them to deploy the application on their client or add the report server as a trusted site. Is there a method by which Report Builder can be locally installed on the client pc instead of online only with it knowing the correct report server to access and then still launch correctly when the report builder button is pressed through report manager?

I am not a web application guru by any means and we have tried to replicate the oneclick deployment and what occurs in the local settings/apps/2.0 subdirectories, but the application still attempts to download/install again. If we attempt to just launch the local executable on the client, report builder assumes the client pc (localhost) is the report server to access. Is there a method which will succeed?

Report builder icon is not showing up on the report manager home page.

If I log in as a user in administrator group, the reportr builder icon shows up so I can download it and build report.

I have assigned reportuser "Content manager" and "repoter builder" access to the home folder. Is there anything else I have to do to make the report build icon show up on the home page?

Report Builder And Report Server Cross Domain Communication

Dec 19, 2006

I have client machine in one domain, say A domain , on which I have installed .net 2.0 without any problem. I have report server running in other domain (B domain) where I have deployed few models which will be used from domain A to create ad hoc reports by launching Report Builder. I can access other reports in domain B from A

But when I click on Report Builder ..it tries to connect to server in domain B but fails to connect and shows following log in a text pop up

I know, problem is because of cross domain communication but question is then how to fix it ? what changes I need to do for that in firewall, domain etc etc settings?

Reporting Services :: Report Builder - Add Report Processing Time?

I was wondering if there was any way to add a value field to a report, with the time it took for the report to Process.

It would probably be a text field with an Expression, but don't know how that would go.

I know that in Expression there is a value for ExecutionTime (when report began to run), but nothing about when it ends. Can this be done? and if yes, how?

Reporting Services :: Go To Report Function Works In Report Builder But Not In Web?

Jul 6, 2015

I've gotten to the point of publishing the new reports on the SSRS server and have run into the following problem.

I use a field in the primary report with the "Go to report" action to open up another report (also published) for more details. It works properly from within ReportBuilder (2.0) using the report server and I can go to and from the secondary report as I expect. Its passing the correct parameters to the second report and its runs.

But when I use the reports from the SSRS web, the Go To link no longer works. Mouse hover shows its still a link but clicking goes no where. I can run both reports independently from SSRS and they still work.

I've tried this in IE and Chrome with no luck in either. I also poked around at Compatability view and popup blocker but nothing made any difference.

Restrict Report Builder Access To Report Execution Timeout

Nov 22, 2006

I am setting up the SQL2005 reporting service to let users build their own reports on the web. I'll provide them with pre-built report models. We have concern with SQL database performance by allowing users to execute huge reports. The problem that I have is: If I give the users permissions to build report they'll have access to the report's Properties | Execution page, which allows them to disable the report execution timeout. Is there a way for me to allow them build reports while restrict them to access the report execution timeout settings?

Please advise. Many thanks.

Issue: When I created calculated field in the report builder the field has a link. When I clicked the drill I saw all the record data including field that not in the smdl.

Questions:

1) Can I remove the link from the calculated fields?

2) Can I prevent from users drill to fields that not in the smdl?
