I tried generate backup file with .bak extension and tried restore into SQl server 2005 express edition but still it is not allowing to do so! This is a very urgent requirement of my client having 200 stores and one Head office. the HO has just installed SQL-Server 2005, The HO sends small backups of the data related to stock transfer which needs to be restored at stores. It was working find when both the HO and stores were SQL-Server 2000. but the process has come to a dead halt as the HO has SQL-Server 2005. It is not possible to convert the stores immediately. please help me out.

I was running Small Business Server 2003 with MS SQL Server 2000. I put backups of all my SQL Server 2000 databases on hard disk d: and the operating system and applications on c:/. I then reformatted c:/ (but left d:/ intact) and installed Windows XP Home. Then I installed MS SQL Server 2005 Developer's Edition.
I would like to now restore the backups of the SQL Server 2000 databases (still intact on drive d:/) to SQL Server 2005, but I get a variety of error messages.
I suspect that I am going about this the wrong way. I have done several hours of research in the documentation without success. I cannot attach the SQL Server 2000 database to SQL Server 2005 because it is a backup, not a database. I cannot migrate the databases as part of the installation of SQL Server 2005 because (a) they are back-ups, and (b) I don't have SQL Server 2000 installed when I install SQL Server 2005.
Is there a solution?

But it failed.
I try :
Database ( right-click) - Restore Database - From Device - Specify Backup Add
Locate Backup File. I must choose File of Type is All File so that i can find file backup from SQL 2000, if i choose File of Type is *.bak,*.trn so i cannot find that file.
And then i choose OK all. But it failed. The error is below :

Hello All,I am not a SQL Server expert, but I have been put in a prettyprecarious situtation and I am close to panicking :( I have need torestore a SQL database from backup (through Enterprise Manager). Thedatabase got corrupt and I detached it, then was unable to attach itagain. I created a new database with the same name and file names torestore to. When I go to All Tasks, restore, and restore from apreviously run full backup, it says "SQL Server is currently in theprocess of restoring the backup set," but the progress bar does notbudge. I look in the data folder and see the full sized transactionlogs (35GB I know, need to be shrunk). The .mdf file remains at 1024Kthough. Do I need to just wait longer? Normally when restoring from aSQL Server .BAK file, the progress is shown to me as it goes along. Ido not know what to do here. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. It use differential backup.
I use following steps to restore the database to one of date's backup,because I want to monitor this date's data.
(1) restore a set of the complete backup first.
and select " Leave database nonoperational but about to restore additional transaction logs"
(2) restore one of date's backup, the backup number is 70.
if I restore the backup number by sequence after a set of complete backup is restore, it is ok
But I can not restore them by sequence,because there are many diffenential backup.
The error message is :
Cannot apply the backup on device 'c: empCk2006backup' to database 'CK2006'.
Restore database is terminating abnornally.
I have tried to use following choice :
Force restore over existing database
Leave database operational. NO additional tracsaction logs can be restored.
Leave database nonoperational but able to restore additional transaction logs.
Leave database read-only and able to restore addtional transaciton logs.
But it also failed to restore.
How should I do?

I have a bug in SQL Server 2000 that I would like to discuss.
The bug is described briefly on http://support.microsoft.com/kb/821334.
"The potential for inconsistency in the backup history tables backupset and backupmediafamily is resolved. This issue may cause the restore process to point to the wrong backup files."
According to my experiences the bug is extremely serious. SQL Server backup and restore operations are not fully reliable. If you have a disaster situation there is a possibility that you can not perform a restore.
Technically a media_family_id is generated in a backup operation and inserted into msdb.dbo.backupmediafamily. What could happen is that a media_family_id, that already exists in backupmediafamily, is generated.
The bug is fixed from version 8.00.0859, but only if you have an special undocumented trace flag (3003) enabled.
Here is the information that I have got from Microsoft about this trace flag.
"Trace flag 3003 changes how SQL generates media_set_id for new backup files. It will guarantee that new media_set_id values in backupset table are unique when you create a new file with your backup. This is the only place in code where TF 3003 is used so it will not impact your SQL Server operations."
I have a SQL Server with 80 databases. I have a maintenance plan with full backup every 24 hours and log backup every 5 minutes.
The error happened on my server a few times every 24 hours. I believe it's a general problem.

How can I force the restore to proceed? I've tried dropping, detaching/attaching but the existing connection(s) apparently prevent this. I dont care about the contents of DBNEW as the data is conmpletely refreshed each night.

I am maintaining a .net 1.0 asp.net web application that accesses a SQL server 2000 database. I need to backup the database and then restore it on a laptop. Currently it resides on a server. The problem is that on the server they are using sql server 2005. If I backup using 2005 and then try and restore this database using SQL server 2000 or 2005 on the laptop, I get an error message. "Too many backup devices specified for backup or restore; only 64 are allowed. RESTORE DATABASE is terminating abnormally.
What can I do to restore the database? Must it be backed up with SQL server 2000 and then restored with SQL Server 2005?

We are attempting to restore one of our databases from a backup that went to a local drive on the server.
We see the backupset in the list but receive an error that it is not available when we try to use it. When we try to restore from device and select the files the drive letter is not available. When we attempt to enter the path to the file it can't locate it. We don't have space on our SAN to copy the backup there and we can't add the local drive to the cluster resources.
Is there a way to get this backup done?

Yesterday I received a response to my CI/CS Collation problem and therecommendation was to try and restore a CI Collation database to a CSCollation database. After creating a blank CS database a full restore(Force restore over existing database) does change the Collation toCI. I'm unsure as to how I can restore without changing theCollation. We have SQL 2000 32-bit Enterprise installed in the default instance. AWE is enabled using Dynamically configured SQL Server memory with 6215 MB minimum memory and 6656 maximum memory settings.
I have now installed, side-by-side, SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition in a separate named instance. Everything is running fine but I believe SQL Server2005 could run faster and need to ensure I am giving it plenty of resources. I realize AWE is not needed with SQL Server 2005 and I have seen suggestions to grant the SQL Server account the 'lock pages in memory' rights. This box only runs the SQL 2000 and SQL 2005 server databases and I would like to ensure, if possible, that each is splitting the available memory equally, at least until we can retire SQL Server 2000 next year. Any suggestions?

I have a database backup (.bak) that was taken from UAT environment that has CDC enabled on some tables. I want to restore that database into my SANDBOX environment which does not support CDC (because of standard edition). The restore process fails due to this incompatibility. Is there any way to restore without CDC (I dont CDC enabled on my SANDBOX; just my data from the backup) ?

I've tried this in the 'tools' area, but that didn't work too well. I suspect, I will have to generate a T-SQL code then schedule it as a job. Why I can't just drag and drop with basic desires, is beyond me, but THAT probably does exist.

a coded date field in the name entry SO, I would, I guess, have to generate all sorts of wonderful code to find the date and build a file name. Why, because using the FROM DISK = 'F:MSSQLBACKUPDBPRODUCTION_yyyyddmm.BAK' is not going to work with a wild card.
Can I do a file lookup using a 'PRODUCTION' prefix into a variable, then use that or should I look for latest file date [remember there are several database backups here], or ????
then. How does one schedule such a T-SQL. Do I save it to some text file, and invoke it using a job scheduler.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm working to test out a recovery scenario involving a SQL 2008 R2 2 node cluster. I want to restore it to a standalone server. The nodes are VMware VMs using physical RDM for the shared storage. Using Veeam as the backup tool. Veeam doesn't work with physical RDM so I'm dumping the databases (all Simple) elsewhere to be picked up and replicated with Veeam. No problem there. For my DR I have a vanilla 2008 R2 server being replicated so that I can use it as a base to restore SQL. So far the testing has worked ok. What I'm trying to learn is the best way to restore the cluster to the standalone server and have it look the same to the affected app servers.
The cluster has several instances. In my testing, I've recreated the instances, but I don't think they show up as they do on the cluster. For example, if the Windows server name is SQL01, and I install an instance called SQL-APP, SELECT @@servername while connected to the instance still shows SQL01 but in production it shows SQL-APP. What do I need to do to get everything to match up? I suspect that, while I haven't seen any problems, there could be something I'm missing that would manifest itself later.
Also, in testing, am I better off to delete the cluster server account from AD and join the domain with the DR server under the same name? (this is an isolated bubble so no impact on production).For the purpose of this scenario, assume all other required servers (DC, DNS, application, etc.) are present in the test environment as they would be in production and nothing requires resources outside the bubble. The only item affected is the SQL cluster.
I can restore databases one by one, setting .mdf and .ldf destination paths.
How can I restore all my Databases at the same time?

I have never done this in a DR scenario before. What I used to do in SQL Server 2000 was apply the logins to a new installation of SQL 2000 then recover the application databases. I'm using 2005 now and I'm in a different mode where I would like to be able to recover the system (master, model, msdb) to a different server with the same SQL Server 2005 build ---- 9.0.3054. I'm following the procedures from Microsoft where they state to place the instance in single user mode first then invoke SQLCMD then perform the restore. Sounds simple enough.
C:> SQLCMD
> RESTORE DATABASE MASTER from DISK = 'Z:MINIDRmaster_backup_200804200315.bak'
The console is coming back with a message that the backup set holds a backup other than the existing master database. So I suppose that this cannot be done and is only intended for recovery on the same instance.

I would like to know, how the datetime will be stored in the sqlserver datetime column.
Because some time i am giving the date in dd/mm/yyyy and sometime mm/dd/yyyy.
while give the date in mm/dd/yyyy works fine but not in the another case. and also while i execute a query on query analyser it shows the datetime in
yyyy/mm/dd format.
So anyone can please tell me how the dates will be stored in the datetime column of sqlserver database?

I am currently running SQL Server 2000 Standard on my production system, and I am looking to upgrade the system to Windows 2000 Adv. Server. I would also like to upgrade SQL Server 2000 Standard to SQL Server 2000 Enterprise to utilize more than 2GB of memory.
