Restore Could Not Start Database

Oct 24, 2006

Hi,

I am trying to restore SQL2K DB backup to SQL2005 Express. The process goes fine, but at the end of the process (100% progress), it shows error Restore Could not start database.

It does not provide more detail to remedy the error.

Anybody faced this problem and have any solution?

Thanks,

Hiten

RESTORE Database - Database In Use, Restore Fails

Nov 19, 1999

11/19

Trying to keep out sysadmins & sa during/between database RESTORE

Configuration:
WINNT Server Enterprise 4.0 w/SP5
SQL Server 7 Enterprise & SP1

2 SQL Servers:
Production Server
Standby server

I Backup (full backup) databases to disk on primary server (logical backup devices are physicaly located on a Standby server (dedicated gigabit NIC in each server for this process). Transaction logs are applied to the Standby server throughout the day.

Problem:
How to keep out "sa" and sysadmins from a database while I'm restoring (or between restores) to a standby server?
The database being restored cannot be in use during a restore.
If a DBA forgets that this process is happening, the statement fails (RESTORE)for the database they happen to be in at the time of the restore.

Example restore statement:
Standby Server -
RESTORE DATABASE databasename FROM database_dd WITH DBO_ONLY, REPLACE, STANDBY = 'g:Mssql7FromPrimaryDatabaseName_undo.ldf'

I could restrict Domain sysadmin access and change sa password. I could also put the database in "Single user" mode, however this could become problem if my process disconnects and then someone else connects - then my process is locked out. What I'm really looking for is to lock out all activity for a database that is in "standby mode" except for RESTORE processes.

Any ideas??

Can' Start New Database From Web Matrix

Apr 8, 2005

I am running Web Matrix version 0.5, .Net version 1.1 on a computer with XP Pro.

Web Matrix works fine and returns forms properly.
I installed MSDE from the website (SQL2KDeskSP3a.exe)  I
believe that SQL Server IS running, because I see the tower icon with a
green arrow; when I double-click that I get a message that it is
running SQL Server.

When I click the "data" tab in Web Matrix I get the blank
workspace.  Then I click the New Connection icon at the top left,
which opens up a dialog box.  I change "Windows Authentication" to
"SQL Authentication."  That opens up the Username/Password
prompt.  I am entering "sa" for the username (I AM NOT SURE IF
THAT IS CORRECT) and "**secret**" for the password (that's what I
entered in the command prompt when I setup the MSDE).  Then I
click "Create a New Database."  I am asked to enter a name.
After a pause, I get an error message:  "Unable to connect to
the database server.  SQL Server does not exist or access denied.
Connection Open (Connect ( )).  OK

Do you have any ideas?

Can't Start Broker For A Database

Dec 27, 2007

I've search this forum and the web - tried this with and without sqlagent running and it always fails:

alter database dbname set enable_broker

I believe there are messages in queues somewhere, but have no idea how to see if and how many there are.
Maybe the broker for this database can't be enabled with too many messages in the queue?

I found code on here that was supposed to clear all message queues, but it never completes.

Anyway...someone else designed this entire system and I have no knowledge of the service broker.

Wipeout Old Database And Start Fresh

Jun 23, 2007

Hi everyone I have been trying hard to unserstand the way my isp does things sort of a communication gap I guess. The problem is I want to use the personal website... yes I know this is a SQL forum and that is what I am going to get at. I having a problems with the database aspect of the whole situtation, I can't creat a aspnetdb.mdf on their server because that name aready exists and I am assuming that it is the system and not a user that ows it. Also I can't name the other database personal.mdf either for the same reasons, so someone at the isp has had me creat a different name database during the install process of the application and that worked fine for a little while and now it does not work no more and I am getting old faster than I'd like. So here is my plan my plan is to wipe out the current database for the application on my workstation but first make a list of tables and then create a new database for that web application. So I ask is it feasible and what do I have to look out for and if it is not to much to ask what steps might take to accomplish such a task. I want to thank anybody that is willing to help me in this matter.

Application On Start And Database Connection

Nov 24, 2003

Hello,
I was wondering if someone could help me answer this question.

If I had a site like Yahoo, that constantly had users accessing it. Would it be a good or bad idea to automatically open a database connection to SQL Server on Application Start? What would you recommend? Would opening and closing the DB connection on every page save alot of overhead and bottleneck? Thank You.

(local) Database Wont Start?

Dec 29, 2004

I dont know how this happened but my (local) SQL Server wont start. I cant access any of the databases. I just get this error:

'A connection could not be established to (local).

Reason: SQL Server does not exist or access denied.
ConnectionOpen (Connect())

Please verify SQL Server is running and check your SQL Server registration properties (by right-clicking on the (local) node) and try again.'

If I go to check the properties I get the same error. Im completely locked out. I looked at the folder and the database files are there, but I cant get to them through Enterprise Manager.

I have no idea how this problem could have happened. It just seemed to have stopped working. All my other databases can be reached (they are external). Could this be a virus or something? Can someone help me out on this one? I dont have a clue what the problem is, much less how to fix it.

Thanks.

I want to design the database correctly in SQL, and not just duplicate the design flaws from Access.

How Do I Start New SQL Server 2005 Database?

Jun 1, 2006

I just installed SQl Server 2005 on my Windows XP Pro system. But I can't figure out how to start the Database Engine. In the MS SQL Server Management Studio I see one Database Engine, but not SQL Servers. If I do "Update Local Server Registration" nothing happens. If I do right-click "New Server Registration" I get a databse icon with a white open circle. If I the try "right-click, Connect, Object Explorer" I get "An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server...". All this time the right Summary pane is showing "No Server Connection."

The tutorials are no help and do not function as they describe.

Sample databases install but do not show up in program list as they are supposed to.

How do I start up my SQL Server Database Engine with a new database?

Why do none of the tutorials show you what to do?

Assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Restore Of Database Backup To Another Database Makes Users DBO

May 7, 1999

Anybody figure a way around this:

In a development server you take a backup and you want to move the entire database to a production server. The production server does not contain the database, users, or logins in master.

When you restore the backup to production in 7.0, the users get moved to DBO because the logins do not exist and then you cannot delete them.

We are having to drop the users from the database on development, back up the database and restore it to production, then recreate the users on production.

This is bogus and did not happen in 6.5 because of the aliases.

Anybody come up with a better way?

How To Backup CE Database Tables And Restore To Newer Database?

Jul 3, 2007

I am fairly new to VS 2005 and SQL Server CE. I have developed a Desktop Windows application using VB 2005 and the SQL Compact Edition Database. This application will sell to users via web download.

When they download a service patch, or updated version, I wish for them to retain the data in their present database. In other words, fill the new database with the old data. The new table structures will remain intact except for added columns at the end.

Question is how to save the old data and update the new database with it. Is there an easy way to do this, or do I need to write a module to save a database copy, and update the new database with content at install time?

Database Service Wont Start After Installing SP2

SQL 2012 :: Restore Master Database For A New Database?

Jul 29, 2014

Sometime during the night last night some user account permissions were "lost". Am I right to think that restoring the master database would be the way to go? We have a 2 node 2012 cluster and I stop the cluster resource and start the db in single user mode from the active node. Somehow the sharepoint farm is still trying to connect so I can't get logged in single user. What method could I use to stop users from connecting when I don't have access to the sharepoint farm.

Is It Possible To Restore A Database But Preserve The Security Of The Database?

Apr 26, 2007

i have a development database that has updates and changes to a production database. rather than go through individually and alter all relevant tables and stored procedures, id like to back up the database on the development side and restore it on the production side as the production database. is there a way to restore the database on the production server but preserve all the security settings (ie logins and such)? i noticed on our development server, that if i try to restore the database with my development database, it overwrites the users and/or if the user is the same on both, it removes the login name for that user.

Possible To Restore Database From Raw MDF And LDF Files Of Old To New Database Instance

Aug 19, 2015

I have a client that has POS software called Restaurant Pro Express (RPE) from [URL] ...

Their old POS computer had a hardware failure, but I was able to attach the hard-drive to another computer and recover the data. RPE uses a MSSQL database system. However, my client doesn't seem to make backups very often

- the last one is dated January 5, 2015. I was able to copy the C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL Server folder over which contained the instance as well as all the data files - and has up-to-date information. The instance in the recovered Microsoft SQL Server folder was called MSSQL.1. I installed the RPE software on their new computer, and it too now has an instance called MSSQL10_50.PCAMERICA. The new computer is using MSSQL 2008 R2, while I believe the old computer would have been using MSSQL 2005.

I am no DBA expert, especially when it comes to MSSQL. Is is possible to 'restore' the database from the 'raw' .mdf and .ldf files of the old computer to the new computer / database instance? If so, how should I proceed?

SQL 2012 :: Recovery Advisor Won't Open Or Start For Specific Database

Jul 1, 2014

Today we were trying to use restore wizard (recovery advisor) to restore a database which is over 80 GB, but the wizard won't load or start. However the wizard dialog box opens without any problems with all other databases stored in the instance. Is there any problem or reason to why the restore wizard won't come up?

This is SQL 2012 enterprise version we are running.

SQL 2005 Won't Start After Moving Model Database With Alter DB Command

Sep 11, 2007

I used the code below to move the Model database and Model log file to new SAN drive locations.
After running the commands I stopped the SQL server and moved the physical files to the correct location.
Now I am unable to start SQL server, I get error 17204 Could not open file:Access is denied

I think the problem maybe that for FILENAME new_path I put "J:SQL ServerMSSQL.1MSSQLData"
but did not include model.mdf in the file path.

How do I correct the path now that SQL service won't start?
I have included the log file below.

ALTER DATABASE database_name MODIFY FILE ( NAME = logical_name , FILENAME = 'new_path/os_file_name' )

SQL Security :: Server Won't Start After Mistyped System Database Names When Moving Them To New Location

Apr 24, 2015

I'm using SQL Server 2012 and was attempting to move the msdb, model, and tempdb databases to a new location and accidentally gave their log files an mdf extension instead of ldf when providing the new pathfilename.  After the server wouldn't start I checked my script and noticed my error.  I have good backups of my system databases, so I was hoping to start the MSSQLSERVER service in single-user mode (using the -m startup parameter) and then just restore master using sqlcmd.

Unfortunately the service was starting but I couldn't connect via sqlcmd using any of the three protocols (it said the server was not found or not accessible each time).  I also tried using the dedicated Admin connection but I got the same error.  Then I went into the Templates folder and copied the master, msdb, model, and tempdb templates into the DATA folder and tried to restart SQL Server but still no luck (now the MSSQLSERVER service won't start at all).  Is there an easy way to fix this mess without having to reinstall from the setup application?

Possible To Restore A Database From Just The Database Device?

Jun 6, 2000

I had a major disk failure, and the only SQL Server files I was able to recover were master.dat, msdb.dat,msdblog.dat, two text files and two database devices. My question, is it possible in SQL 6.5 to restore a database from just the database device, and if so, how? Thank you.

MH
