Restoring The Backup File - URGENT PLEASE

Nov 28, 2000

Hi Everybody,

Our branch office in Europe has sent full 'backup' file of capacity 25GB.
I have to restore this backup to our database. Their database is 'Candidate'
and our database is 'client'. Both these databases have different logical
names and physical names.

The following Batch script only I hv executed,

RESTORE DATABASE Client
FROM DISK = 'd:dumppaw01dump.bak'
WITH MOVE 'candidatedata' TO 'e:mssqldataclient_data.mdf',
MOVE 'candidatelog' TO 'd:mssqllogclient_log.ldf',
REPLACE

Can anybody tell me, what I have executed above is correct or not. Now
restoration is going on for more than an hr. Still it is going on. Is there
any other way to restore this backup set very fastly.

Our server has got very good hardware setup. Good amount of hard disk space.
4GB RAM Memory. Running 4 processors. No other service is running apart from
SQL Server. Right now nobody is accessing the server.

How long it will take to restore this backupset?. This is urgent please.

Any help would be appreciated.

tks in advance,
Sri

Restoring DB For Files...

Jan 22, 2004

Hi
In order to copy a database from a server to a server, I cant detach the database as there are many users connected to it. The transaction log is large file while the data is about 46 MB, I made a backup for the data file only, zipped it and copied it to the target server.
Ex: the name of the source DB on the source server is x, the file I took as a backup for is x-data
From the Enterprise Manager, right-click the x DB, All tasks, Backup database, in the backup option click the File and Filegroup option and chose the primary file group with x_data file.
Then, I created a new database name it y with y_data , y_log files on primary filegroup. I want to restore my backup to have the DB x on my target server,
I tried:
RESTORE DATABASE y
FILE = 'y_data',
FILEGROUP = 'primary'
FROM disk= 'E:VMSDBFiles est'
GO

But it did not work. Any help?

Thanks,

Restoring DB With Many Device Files

Jun 28, 2000

Hi All

I have taken ownership of a SQL 7 Server that has many DB's with each DB's devices spread all over the 6 disks that exists in the Server.

e.g.

DB - Reference has

Data devices on D (20mb), E(40mb) , F(60mb) drives

and Logs having a similar spread.

Now what I want to do is to restore a full backup of the database into a new db but with only one data device and one log. So that basically the server is tidied up. The reason the devices are spread is not due to performance reasons.

The QUESTION IS : How do I restore a full back up of a db with many devices in to a NEW db with only 1 data device and 1 log device.

Thanks

Restoring SQL Server Databases From .mdf Files

Feb 14, 2006

I recently was given control of an SQL server that stop working.
We had no past backups of the database and the only file we had was the .mdf
I decided to install a fresh version of SQL 2000 on another server and created a database using enterprise manager with the same name as my database called SWATraining

I then stop the sql server

the first thing that I notice is that the .mdf that enterprise manager created had _DATA at the end of the name. Thus I renamed the the orginal .mdf SWATraining_Data and

copied it to the
C:program filesmicrosoft sql servermssqldata
when I started SQL the database was greyed out and had (suspect)labeled

How can I recover the database when the only file I have is the .mdf file??

I even tried

sp_attach_single_file_db @dbname = 'SWATraining',
@physname = 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLDataSWATraining.mdf'

but reason this error

Server: Msg 5172, Level 16, State 15, Line 1
The header for file 'C:Program FilesMicrosoft SQL ServerMSSQLDataSWATraining.mdf' is not a valid database file header. The FILE SIZE property is incorrect.

Restoring Separate Differential Backup Files

Dec 6, 2007

Hi,

I'm making backups of the database by first making a full backup and then differential backups. The differentials are backed up to separate files.

Restore of the full backup works fine, but I can't restore a differential backup. In Management Studio Express, I first do a full backup restore with option NO RECOVERY and then try to restore a differential backup. But this failes with the message:

"This differential backup cannot be restored because the database has not been restored to the correct earlier state."

Is it possible to restore a differential backup that is backed up to a separate file?

URGENT: Problems With Guest User In SQL 2005 Restoring Databases From Sql 2000

Sep 18, 2006

Hi all.

I don't know if this is the right forum to post this question, but here it goes.

We have restored into sql 2005 the database backups made in sql 2000. We connect with trusted connection and application roles, and when trying to execute a transaction to another database (with the guest user), we get a permission error.

Does anyone know if, apart from restoring the databases, we should do something else to get the guest user working the same way as with sql 2000 in the restored databases?

Thanks in advance for your help.

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Restoring DBs From Files Not Backups?

Dec 1, 2014

Until yesterday I had a server running SQL Server 2008 R2 - with all the SQL Server DB files on an attached disk array.

The server died - so I attached the disk array to a new server - and all the DB data files are visible there.

I installed SQL Server 2014 on the new server and am trying to work out how to point it at the existing database files.

I also have backups of the DB's - but they will take ages to copy over and restore - so it would be much easier to just use the db files. Should I restore the master db first (easy as its small)?

Restoring Multiple Backup Files Simultaneously To New Server

Mar 5, 2007

Alright, here's the deal. I'm testing some backup/restore strategies, and hitting a (slight) sticking point.

We've got collections of database and log backups created by the usual maintenance plans on a 2000 Enterprise machine. I'm trying to run through a restore onto a new 2005 machine (Developer Edition on my test workstation) using the collection of .bak and .trn files copied from the 2000 server. When I try to restore to a new database on 2005 via SSMS, and select all the .bak and .trn files for the restore, I get the ol' "The volume on device '[trimmed]' is not part of a multiple family media set. BACKUP WITH FORMAT can be used to form a new media set." error.

I'm assuming this just means that SQL Server can't verify that these log backups are in fact part of a functional "set", even if they aren't part of a traditional backup media set. Is there any way to tell SSMS, "It's okay man, just restore the database from these files, in this order - trust me," or is the only solution restoring every individual log file one at a time? (Which seems to work fine, though is a tremendous pain with any more than a few log backups.) Seems like there ought to be a good one-shot method to restore a bunch of backups to a different server, and I'm just not finding it.

Inserting With XML Files - VERY URGENT!!!

Oct 26, 2006

Hello everybody,

I have a problem. I need to insert an unknown number of xml files in a database (all files are always in the same folder), in different tables, each file has the same name that the corresponding table. For example:

Files Tables

user.xml user

purchase.xml purchase

...and so

but the number of files is not always the same, I mean, it can be 6 one day and only 4 the next day.
Can I insert the data in the xml files into the tables with a Foreach Loop Container or any other way?? If it's possible, how?

Urgent Help.. Import Files With Different Structures And Formats..?

May 30, 2007

In SSIS it is very easy to import any kind of file using the Import/Export Wizard but programming in SSIS package to do the same thing is almost impossible. It can even be done by using OPENROWSET in SQL management studio but then there are problems with Excel data types and etc..

I have done my research and so far I couldnt figure it out, I know poeple have done it but I am new to SSIS and I need clearer instructions. This is my situation..

I have created a package that checks an then creates a database and then creates a table based on the Excel/csv/sdf/dbf etc file. (The structure is captured in another database using a front end app). I am stuck at importing the file into the table that I just created. I cannot use the design time tools as the files coming in will be in different formats and structures. I have found different examples of desinging the package programatically but I dont know how to:

1. Convert C# to VB. Net (Actually Im looking for the example of the code in VB.net rather than converting it)

2. Add the code in my design (Most of the code that I have seen looks like they are creating the package from scratch).

I am following this but I keep getting stuck.. (http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=749383&SiteID=1)

Any help will be appreciated..

I have used these key words for my research so far: copy data from excel to SQL, vb .net ssis custom column maping, cutsom transform, custom data flow , build column mapping programatically, script component custom source destination transform mapping

Hope answer to this thread will help many people (like me) who are in the learning process..

SQL Server Admin 2014 :: Separate Data Files / Log Files / TempDB / Backups

Jan 9, 2015

I proposed on a new server that we separate Data Files, Log Files, tempDB, Backups, etc. onto separate LUNS on a SAN with High Speed Solid State Drives.I was told that with the new technology with solid state SAN's that it would decrease performance and that it did not work the same way as it did when you had RAID 5's etc.I thought that if things were cared out correctly by a SAN Administrator they would know how to configure for optimal performance.

Restoring Just The Data?

Mar 5, 2007

Hi All,

We have a database on our server in the office, which I have installed to test an application in delevelopment. I've got it all working and tested OK.

I've continued working on it at home. I've added some fields to one of the tables. The database in office has a data in which I whish to transfer to my test database - with the new fields added.

I have tried the backup and restore procedure, which works great, but it overwrites the entire database, I just want the data from all tables in one procedure each way, one to backup and one to restore.

I hope that makes sense.

Thanks

Error In Restoring Data From CD.

Aug 14, 2000

I need to move a database from one server to a new server. Right now, I only have database file on CD which is generated using the backup feature of MS SQL server.

What I did was I copied the file from CD to the harddisk of the new server.
Then I used the restore database, restore from disk, where I specified the location of the backup database file. When I began to restore, the error message I got was:
The file 'e:MSSQL7dataGTCSQL_data.mdf cannot be used by RESTORE. Consider using the WITH MOVE option to identify a valid location for the file. Backup or restore operation terminating abnormally.

The error message in the error.log of SQL server is:
BackupFileDesc::VerifyCreatability: Operating system error 3(The system cannot find the path specified.) during the creation/opening of physical device e:MSSQL7DATAGTCIntranetSQL_dat.mdf.

What did I do wrong? How to use the WITH MOVE option? This is the first time I use MS SQL server. So please give me detailed instruction if posible.

Any suggestion are greatly appreciated.

Restoring Data Using Sql Manager

May 20, 1999

Here is a senario that I am confused about
if I backedup a table on Monday 5 pm. this table has 3 rows of data.
On Tuesday, I inserted 3 more rows and backed it at 5 pm ( total rows now are 6)
On Wedesday, I deleted the first 3 rows accidently.

Which is more efficient : to restore the data from Monday ( in order to restore the first 3 rows)
OR
Restore the data from Tuesday( I will choose not to append to the available data )

This is a small sample, but if I am dealing with 40 GB of data. I want to know the best way to restore the lost data.

Restoring Database Leaves Me With (Restoring...) Message

Jan 9, 2007

I did a full backup of a db from one server(Express2005) and trying to restore it to a different instance of SQL2005 on the same development machine. (Also had some fulltext columns if that means anything)

Many failures but finally got it to report all was successful except the icon in Object Explorer shows (Restoring...) with no indication of any real activity going on. It's a tiny database with hardly any data in it.

Just not sure what the heck is going on there. It also won't let me into the database until this the (Restoring...) goes away.

Any advice on how to get this thing finished out?
