TempDB Log File Running Out Of Free Space While Running DBCC CheckDB On Large Database

May 28, 2015

In my environment, there is maintenance plan configured on one of the server and while running DBCC checkdb on a database of size around 200GB, log file usage of tempdb is increasing and causing the maintenance job to fail.

What can I do to make the maintenance job run successfully, size of the tempdb database is only 50GB and recovery model is set to simple. It cannot be increased as the mount point on which it is residing is 50GB.

Running DBCC Shrinkfile Code, From Where?

Feb 13, 2006

SQL2000 Server, SP4, a database with a 17Gb log file. It has been backed up so all transactions should be validated, now the real file size needs to be shrunk because I need the diskspace plus I want to speed up the backup process.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/272318/ Tells me what to do but not where to do it.

So I need to run this code : DBCC SHRINKFILE(pubs_log, 2)

but from what console do I run it?

Running A Stored Procedure In Code

Apr 14, 2008

Hi,

I'm not sure if this is really the right place for this but it is related to my earlier post. Please do say if you think I should move it.

I created a Stored procedure which I want to run from Visual basic (I am using 2008 Express with SQL Sever 2005 Express)

I have looked through many post and the explaination of the sqlConection class on the msdn site but I am now just confussed.

Here is my SP

ALTER PROCEDURE uspSelectBarItemID2

(

@BarTabID INT,

@DrinkID INT,

@ReturnBarItemID INT OUTPUT

)

AS

BEGIN

SELECT @ReturnBarItemID = barItemID

FROM [Bar Items]

WHERE (BarTabID = @BarTabID) AND (DrinkID = @DrinkID)

END

In VB I want to pass in the BarTabID and DrinkID varibles (Which Im grabbing from in as int variables) to find BarItemID in the same table and return it as an int.

What I dont understand is do I have to create a unique connection to my database because it is already liked with a dataset to my project with a number of BindingSources and TableAdapters.

Is there an easier way, could I dispense with SP and just use SQL with the VB code, I did think the SP would be neater.

Cheers.

Running SSIS Package Using .Net Code

Aug 2, 2007

I am running this code my question is when it runs ExecuteNonQuery() it doesn't wait for package to complete It just returns "Package succeeded' - The way you can test if you run this code 2 times one after another. ExecuteNonQuery() breaks with error -

How can I check before return package is running and wait to complete before return?

Error When Running A Stored Procedure From My Code

May 9, 2008

 Hi all,      I wonder if you can help me with this. Basically, Visual Web Developer doesn't like this part of my code despite the fact that the stored procedure has been created in MS SQL. It just won't accept that bold line in the code below and even when I comment it just to cheat, it still gives me an error about the Stored Procedure. Here's the line of code:          // Define data objects        SqlConnection conn;        SqlCommand comm;        // Initialize connection        string connectionString =            ConfigurationManager.ConnectionStrings[            "pay"].ConnectionString;        // Initialize connection        conn = new SqlConnection(connectionString);        // Create command         comm = new SqlCommand("UpdatePaymentDetails", conn);        //comm.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure;        // Add command parameters        comm.Parameters.Add("PaymentID", System.Data.SqlDbType.Int);        comm.Parameters["PaymentID"].Value = paymentID;        comm.Parameters.Add("NewPayment", System.Data.SqlDbType.VarChar, 50);        comm.Parameters["NewPayment"].Value = newPayment;        comm.Parameters.Add("NewInvoice", System.Data.SqlDbType.VarChar, 50);        comm.Parameters["NewInvoice"].Value = newInvoice;        comm.Parameters.Add("NewAmount", System.Data.SqlDbType.Money);        comm.Parameters["NewAmount"].Value = newAmount;        comm.Parameters.Add("NewMargin", System.Data.SqlDbType.VarChar, 50);        comm.Parameters["NewMargin"].Value = newMargin;        comm.Parameters.Add("NewProfit", System.Data.SqlDbType.Money);        comm.Parameters["NewProfit"].Value = newProfit;        comm.Parameters.Add("NewEditDate", System.Data.SqlDbType.DateTime);        comm.Parameters["NewEditDate"].Value = newEditDate;        comm.Parameters.Add("NewQStatus", System.Data.SqlDbType.VarChar, 50);        comm.Parameters["NewQStatus"].Value = newQStatus;        comm.Parameters.Add("NewStatus", System.Data.SqlDbType.VarChar, 50);        comm.Parameters["NewStatus"].Value = newStatus;        // Enclose database code in Try-Catch-Finally        try        {            conn.Open();            comm.ExecuteNonQuery();        }

Reporting Services :: Parsing SSRS Config File And Dynamically Changing File Path Of Config File In Code

Sep 2, 2015

Currently have a single hard coded file path to the SSRS config file which parses the file and provides the reporting services web service url.  My question is how would i run this same query against 100s of servers that may or may not share the same file path as the one hard coded ?

Is there a way to query the registry to find the location of the config file of any server ? which could be on D, E, F, H, etc.

I know I can string together the address followed by "reports" and named instance if needed, but some instances may not have used the default virtual directory name (Reports).

Am I going about this the hard way ? Is there a location where the web service url exists in a table ? I could not locate anything in the Reporting service database. Basically need to inventory all of my reporting services url's.

Different Results When Running Procedure From Management Studio Vs Application Code

Apr 28, 2008

I'm updating a process that recreates a large table every night. The table is the result of a bunch of nightly batch processes and holds a couple million records. In the past, each night at the end of the batch jobs the table would be dropped and re-created with the new data. This process was embodied in dynamic sql statements from an MFC C++ program, and my task is to move it to a SQL Server 2000 stored procedure that will be called from a .Net app. Here's the relevant code from my procedure:
sql Code:

Original
- sql Code

-- recreate new empty BatchTable table
print 'Dropping old BatchTable table...'
exec DropBatchTable --stored procedure called from old code that does a little extra work when dropping the table

-- validate drop
If exists (select * from dbo.sysobjects where id = object_id(N'[dbo].[BatchTable]') and OBJECTPROPERTY(id, N'IsUserTable') = 1)
Begin
RAISERROR( 'Unable to drop old BatchTable!',0,1) WITH NOWAIT
End Else Begin
print 'Old BatchTable dropped.'
End

print 'Creating new BatchTable...'
SELECT TOP 0 *, cast('' as char(3)) as Client, cast('' as char(12)) as ClientDB
INTO dbo.BatchTable
FROM differentDB.dbo.BatchArchives

--validate create
If Not exists (select * from dbo.sysobjects where id = object_id(N'[dbo].[BatchTable]') and OBJECTPROPERTY(id, N'IsUserTable') = 1)
Begin
RAISERROR( 'Unable to create new BatchTable!',0,1) WITH NOWAIT
End Else Begin
print 'New BatchTable Created.'
End

    -- recreate new empty BatchTable table    print 'Dropping old BatchTable table...'    exec DropBatchTable --stored procedure called from old code that does a little extra work when dropping the table     -- validate drop    IF EXISTS (SELECT * FROM dbo.sysobjects WHERE id = object_id(N'[dbo].[BatchTable]') AND OBJECTPROPERTY(id, N'IsUserTable') = 1)    BEGIN        RAISERROR( 'Unable to drop old BatchTable!',0,1) WITH NOWAIT    END ELSE BEGIN        print 'Old BatchTable dropped.'    END     print 'Creating new BatchTable...'    SELECT TOP 0 *, CAST('' AS CHAR(3)) AS Client, CAST('' AS CHAR(12)) AS ClientDB    INTO dbo.BatchTable    FROM differentDB.dbo.BatchArchives     --validate create    IF NOT EXISTS (SELECT * FROM dbo.sysobjects WHERE id = object_id(N'[dbo].[BatchTable]') AND OBJECTPROPERTY(id, N'IsUserTable') = 1)    BEGIN        RAISERROR( 'Unable to create new BatchTable!',0,1) WITH NOWAIT    END ELSE BEGIN        print 'New BatchTable Created.'    END

The print statements are there because the .net app will read them in and then write them to a log file. Some of the other mechanics are there to mimic the old process. The idea is to duplicate the old process first and then work on other improvements.

This works in Management studio. The .Net App reports that the old table was dropped, but when it tries to create the new table it complains that "There is already an object named 'BatchTable' in the database." I have verified that the old table is removed.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

SQL Server 2008 :: Running (sub-report) In SSRS From Custom Code?

Aug 6, 2015

I have a balance sheet report developed and working. What I need to do is add the ability to click (or double-click) on a number and have a separate report (drill-down) open with the detail that makes up that number. I've researched drill-through reports, sub reports, etc. but can't find a way to do what I want.

I'm now thinking that I need to add custom code in the report properties, code window to do this. I'm hoping that there is a VB method I can use to call this report and pass a parameter. Pseudo-code for this function would look something like this: RunReport("DrillDownReport", "Parameter").

This seems like it should be pretty easy but I don't know what the function is in VB for running an SSRS report (if there is one).

Is this possible or am I barking up the wrong code tree?

Query A Table For A Value In The Code File.

Feb 7, 2008

Ok, so im pretty much finished writing my forum web page.  However to display things like how many replies each thread has and who replied last, i need to perform a query in the code file.  Im guessing its simple enough but i cant get the syntax for actually performing any query.  I already know the sql syntax like select * from all that stuff but how do i get do something like:
Dim x as integer = sqlQuery("Select count(*) FROM ...")
 Currently i have it all working by creating a table and making it invisible and just pulling data from the table but thats sloppy and pretty ineffecient if i databind a table for every single topic name.

Exporting Records To A File Through Code

Aug 13, 2007

Hi.

I am writing a program where I import data into a database with a System.Web.UI.WebControls.SqlDataSource object, using its Insert method.

Like this...
Dim DataBaseConnectionString As New Web.UI.WebControls.SqlDataSource()
DataBaseConnectionString.ConnectionString = "Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True"
DataBaseConnectionString.InsertCommandType = Web.UI.WebControls.SqlDataSourceCommandType.Text
DataBaseConnectionString.InsertCommand = "BULK INSERT TBLMain FROM '/file.csv' WITH (FIRSTROW = 2, FIELDTERMINATOR = ',', ROWTERMINATOR = '')"
DataBaseConnectionString.InsertParameters.Add("csvdatapath", OFDCSV.FileName.ToString())
Try
DataBaseConnectionString.Insert()
Catch ex As Exception

I have been able to get this working fine.

I need to export to (ideally) a .CSV or a .XLS. I have tried to use the:

Code Snippet (SQL)COPY TO '
esults.csv' CSV

Is it possible to use a simmilar method of interacting with the database through code to perform this?

Thanks

File Group Is Running Out Of Space?

Jul 21, 2015

I am currently SQL admin since our ordinary SQL folks are at summer vacation.

Yesterday SCOM alerted that File Group is running out of space on one not so critical database "The file group "PRIMARY" for the database "loganalys" in SQL instance "MSSQLSERVER" on computer "sqlserver2" is running out of space".

I logged in to the SQL server and checked the database in question. It is a very large DB with a size  of 577 GB.The storage on which the database files resides has 123 GB free space so that isn't the issue.

The database is set to autogrowth 1 MB at a time (unrestricted) so that doesn't seem to be the issue either.However, in the database properties under General, it says Space avaliable: 570 MB.

I guess that this may be the issue, that this is under some treshold for SCOM to alert on.I have looked at the other databases and they have everything between 0,25MB to 270MB space avaliable (they are all set to autogrowth 1 MB, unrestricted).

I am not sure what this means and if I have to do something about it?
