I am trying to figure out how the back up is performed on my sql as I seem to have quite a few very large BAK files that I want to know if I can delete them.
These files have grown to about 85Gs
The IT group told me that the were going to set up the SQL to back up as a file and then SBS 2003 would back up this file onto the USB drive. The IT people that set this up have really sold me a lot of BS about so much that I have decided to get control of all aspect of the SBS2003.
How to I verify that the SQL is being backed up and can I delete these really big old dated BAK files?

I need to upgrade my 2000 DB to 2005, and I wanted to use SFTP instead of calling ftp through DOS.
Any ideas?
I'm new to 2005, so I am not even sure if DTS Tools support SFTP.

what i need to do is loop through a table and get username and password for the sftp connection. The problem is that i cant set the sftp connections password with expression. I can change the SSH User and port and other settings too.
The reason that i cant set the password is that it doesnt appear on the expressions menu.
Has anyone else had this problem and how did you solve it ?
Can i use script task to set the password to the sftp task at run time ? This would be great because in the future i have to connect to the same server with many different users (possibly dozens or hundreds of users).

I've created a linked server (and set up the corresponding schema.ini file) in order to perform bulk-inserts from some CSV text files into SQL tables (from my standpoint the text files are just for reading purposes). The linked server works fine (I can select the data in the files without a problem).
Now the question: is possible to automatically detect when one or more of those files change in order to start the import process automatically? Something like having a trigger created on the CSV files Or there's no easy way to do that so I have, to say something, to create a Job that periodically checks if the files have changed programatically (say, recording each file's timestamp everytime is imported and comparing the recorded value with the current one, or whatever)?

Jan 9, 2015I proposed on a new server that we separate Data Files, Log Files, tempDB, Backups, etc. onto separate LUNS on a SAN with High Speed Solid State Drives.I was told that with the new technology with solid state SAN's that it would decrease performance and that it did not work the same way as it did when you had RAID 5's etc.I thought that if things were cared out correctly by a SAN Administrator they would know how to configure for optimal performance.

SCSI disk array.Windows Enterprise 2003 x64 final release. SQL Server 2005 enterpriseCTP.Machine B: Opeteron 2.2 (248) w/ 2 CPUs. 4GB Memory. IDE Drives.Windows Server 2003 (32bit) and SQL Server 2005 (standard).I'm using Cognos' DecisionStream as the ETL tool (32bit). I have theidentical job on both machines. Machine A is slower to do my nightlybuild (1h 20m) vs. Machine B (50m).I've done no tweaking of the databases. I am having a problem connecting my .net applications from the application server to the database server. When I run the application from my windows xp (sp2) box it works fine. When I try to connect via SQL Management Studio to the database server from the application server I get the same error.
Here is the error:
System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
Here is the Environment:
App Server:
Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition
Inside Company's Firewall/ Network
Database Server:
Windows Server 2000 Advanced Edition
SQL Server 2000 SP4
Remote Connections to the Server is checked
Enable Protocols: Named Pipes & TCP/IP
TCP/IP Port: 1402 (I don't know why it isn't the default of 1433)
The db server is sitting out side the Company's firewall (don't ask me why). I can access it fine from inside the firewall on my XP box but not from windows server 2003. There is a web server outside the our network that also connects to the db server with no problem and that is running Windows Server 2003 Web Edition.
I can ping the db server from the app server using the IP address.
I tried using the IP address and the port 1402 in my connection string but that didn't work from any machine (XP and Server).
I imagine the issue is somehow related to the company's firewall but why would it only block Windows Server 2003 and not XP?
What do I tell the network admin to change?
Any help would be appreciated.

Windows 2003 Server and all client PCs are all on the same network. I installed SQL 2005 std version on windows server 2003 and created a database and tables in it.
I have two users, who want to connect to SQL server 2005 from their PCs (they have windows XP):
These are two things that I need to facilitate:
1) They want to be able to write queries using Query Designer and run from their PCs.
2) I created an MS Access database on my PC, I want to use Access database as a front end to the SQL server database. I will create queries, forms in Access DB, and I want to be able to get the data from SQL server Database to do this. I guess I can use ODBC to connect to tables in SQL server database.
3) I want to connect SQL server to Oracle database, and run oracle stored procedures. I want to load the results of oracle stored procedures into SQL server database tables. I guess I will use IIS for this.
Any suggestions are appreciated, especially with item number 1.

There's a great article on how to do this on a SBS 2000 server (KB304967), but it does not apply to SBS 2003. Server 2003 Running Sql Server 2005. Regional Settings Are Different From All Others We Have; Can We Safely Change It?

We have a bunch of servers running server 2000 & 2003 along with many sql server (versions 2000 & 2005) databases in a production environment pulling transactions then doing warehousing & reporting.
An audit has shown up 1 production server using English_US 'mmddyyyy' system date formats, all others being English_Australian 'ddmmyyyy'.
Is it safe to simply change the regional settings on this English_US server to English_Australian or will it mess up the data in our SQL 2005 databases? I've not been able to get a definitive answer from anyone yet!

Nov 24, 2004My uncle runs a small networking company and has extra licenses for Windows 2003 Server as well as SQL Server 2000. Since I just graduated from college and have started working as a database programmer (for a different company) I'd like to setup a small server at home to learn more about SQL (as well as networking, but SQL is my primary concern). I know I can setup SQL Server 2000 on my main PC, but I'd still like to set everything up in a server environment.
So, what I'm wondering is if any books (or web sites?) exist that walk you through setting up Windows 2003 Server and SQL Server 2000. I've actually set these up before (it's not very complicated) but I'm not sure if I did it the "correct" way.
Ideally if any books exist on O'Reilly's Safari Bookshelf that would be even better.

Background: We have SQL Server 2003 (32bit) running on our servers. Our .Net applications (from old release of VS) are still running on them and using the old databases. From what I understand there is no immediate plans to upgrade the servers. However the developers were just given this new upgrade (2005) SQL Server and VS (and fixing depreciated code etc in the .net apps).
Question: Can the applications and new stored procedures written via the 2005 environment be deployed successfully on the 2003 Servers? Same goes with Reporting Services?
