I was thinking about saving some files in a SQL Server DB and then reading those back to the client for download. Any warnings that I should know about before doing so? The files will generally be at most 2mb in probably .pdf format. I've heard bad things about doing this in Access...but then again, SQL Server isn't access.
How do i Browser for files in computer, and upload them to Server? then link the file's URL(on server) into a Database. What i am wanting to do: Upload pictures (For products) for use in product pages What i think i need: Browse for images on local computerUpload the file to ServerStore the Image URL(relative to server) in DB
Hi,I was wondering what anybodies feelings on storing images and files in SQL server express 2005?I am guessing it is a No No...If this is the case what are the best practices for achieving this?Would something like a table which held the "real name of the file", "a unique identifier" do the trick...hence in code (c#) i could create a GUID for the unique identifier maybe??? and then upload the pictue or file to a common directory and name it with the unique identifier rather than its real name. This means that i could potentially hold a different file with the same name i.e. no conflictsMy app is a sort of HTML editor in asp.net (all html is stored in the db) so if i do upload a picture using a GUID or uniquee identifier then if somebody saves teh image from a webpage then it would be called uniqueIdentifier.jpg which is probably what i don't want.So the only other idea i had was to create a directroy within my site which I would name with the unique identifier and upload the pics and files with thier real names into this directory. Hence each document would have its own directory so there would be no conflicts with filenamesAny advice or comments really appreciatedThanks in advanceIan
Someone: I have the need to upload a file via a webpage and then save that file into the database. I would also like to retrieve it and show it to the user.
Can someone show me an example of how this should be done. Also I am concerned of the pros and cons of saving files in the database. Is there a performance hit on the server? Will it make the database unstable? Has anyone had problems doing this?
Any suggestions, samples, and/or help are welcome.
I have a small project to be done in which I need to fetch the pdf file from a my system and save it in database and also fetch the name of it and save it in the database.

has anyone got any opinions on the pros/cons of storing mp3 files in the database instead of the file system ? How could this be done ? Would it be a binary data type ?

I am new to sql server and i would like to set up a multimedia database (includes photos) using sql server (regardless of the version). How can i achieve that?
Hello -- I'm building an app that will allow users to create their own photo galleries. At this point, I'm planning on storing all photos as byte arrays in SQL server image fields. Besides the organizational benefit, is there a space benefit to doing this? That is, if I have 1MB of .jpg's, will those same images take up less than 1MB of file space within the database? One of the reasons I ask is that most hosting plans out there seem to offer more "normal" disk space than is allocated for the database, so I'm trying to make a best plan to accommodate what will probably end up being the biggest disk space consumer in my app (the photos, that is). Any other recommendations re: this scenario (hosting, best practices) are appreciated. TIA, Eric
Can someone provide information or a link to information regarding the pros and cons of saving files directly into a SQL 2005 database? I'm actually for saving files to a database (cleaner implementation then just saving the location then having to get the file, etc), but my project manager is not convinced so I need to make an argument for (or against depending on what I actually find out) using varbinary data type. Thanks.
I'm trying to do something which I hope can be accomplished relatively simply.
I have a report similar to bank statements let's say. When run, it currently prints out each person's statement into one file, with page breaks sepearating each person's statement. What I need to do, is when the report is run, save each person's report into a seperate file for the purpose of emailing to them later.
I could easily modify my report to just output for one particular person, but I'm not sure if there's a way to "bulk render" all the reports and have them saved to sepearate files.
I should also add that I'm using an MS Access Data Project (ADP) as the front end to my app - connected to a SQL Server 2005 DB. I currently display the reports by embedding a web browser object into an Access form and rendering the report via HTML.
I am having a problem with MMSQL BLOB with VB, Sorry to say I am new in Programming using VB 6 and MSSQL and I have never touch BLOB in my live.
I just wish anyone could give me any ideal, like, white pages, or manual on how do I insert BLOB data (Images) to MSSQL 2000 database using VB 6. I need to know exspecially the VB Code and the SQL Portion if you have a store procedure code for that it will be nice.
I am trying to automate a basic task using SQL Server 2005 Express.
Currently I have a query script that I run and then save the results as a CSV file. I need to do this on a daily basis and so I am looking to find out how best to go about this. There are a multitude of third party tools that claim to be able to do this - can anyone recommend this or enlighten me of the best way to set up this automation.
I've created a linked server (and set up the corresponding schema.ini file) in order to perform bulk-inserts from some CSV text files into SQL tables (from my standpoint the text files are just for reading purposes). The linked server works fine (I can select the data in the files without a problem).
Now the question: is possible to automatically detect when one or more of those files change in order to start the import process automatically? Something like having a trigger created on the CSV files Or there's no easy way to do that so I have, to say something, to create a Job that periodically checks if the files have changed programatically (say, recording each file's timestamp everytime is imported and comparing the recorded value with the current one, or whatever)?
I'm populating an Access continuous form with lots of icons from a SQLServer backend. If I remove the field holding the icons from thestored procedure, the form loads 5X faster. Is there any sort of trickto improve the performance of this sort of scheme?lq
I am trying to create a website that people can upload an image and have it saved to a database. Can someone point me in the right direction on this? What properties need to be saved in the db and how?
i am trying to upload images from an asp.net or vb.net front end to a sql server db. I can upload the image fine if I first save the image to a file and then upload but my question is whether I can upload the image without first saving the image file. What i would like to do is to capture an image with a digital camera and without saving it first (an extra step for the user), upload it to a sql server db.
Hello, I am trying to put on a webpage a picture with a discription, however when I create an MxDataGrid and run the page all the info in the datagrid is correct except the image. All that is in the field is "System.Byte[]". I am new to web programming but I have created many databases and using Access as a front end where this process is very straightforward. Can anyone tell me how I can make this work? I want to store images along with other info about the image in the database so that I can simply query the database and have the page fill from the query. Thanks whill1
Hi Guru's,I want to show images in my webforms, but whitout any succes....... , hope some can tell me why as base I've used exactly the same script as defined in the article http://www.dotnetbips.com/displayarticle.aspx?id=101 Maybe its because some of the HTML is incorrect ?<itemtemplate> <asp:image id="img" runat= server></asp:image></itemtemplate>Please , a need some assitance hereregardsS
I wanted to store image files in my Db.So can i use image data type?If i can use the image data type how big images can i store. My image are arounf 10 mb in size. Thanks.
I have a problem and I do not know what way to go:
We have a large amount of images that we need to store (large amount is more that 1.000.000), the logical question is, whether we shall store them in the database, or we should store them separate on the file-system, and place the filepath and filename in the database.
Some articles say that SQL Server 2000 will get performance problems with this amount of images stored in the database, others say that it should be no problem.
Can someone please give me a advice?

I proposed on a new server that we separate Data Files, Log Files, tempDB, Backups, etc. onto separate LUNS on a SAN with High Speed Solid State Drives.I was told that with the new technology with solid state SAN's that it would decrease performance and that it did not work the same way as it did when you had RAID 5's etc.I thought that if things were cared out correctly by a SAN Administrator they would know how to configure for optimal performance.
It works remotely if I run it via command prompt. But when I add this to a TSQL job on my remote SQL instance, it runs without deleting anything. What I'm missing?
