I'm trying to

and i get a bunch of errors

I'm new to SQL within the past year and am having quite a bit of difficulty trying to replace NULL in a column cast as smalldatetime. What i'd like to do is return the value "EMPLOYEED" within any record containing a null value, obviously I need to CAST the column to a varchar but when I try and do this I keep getting errors. I'm trying hard to find the answer online but the only examples I get are is for money and i'm not sure i'm completely understanding how this is supposed to work. I've also tried using the ISNULL function as well - getting the same errors in this case (though i'm using ISNULL successfully in another column).
It seems to me that I should be able to write the syntax as the following:
CAST(ISNULL(TerminationDate, 'EMPLOYEED') AS Varchar(20)) AS TerminationDate
----OR---
CAST(COALESCE(TerminationDate, 'EMPLOYEED') AS Varchar(20)) AS TerminationDate
I'm new enough that I could just be confusing myself, but I really seriously cannot find any good explanations or examples online for what I am trying to do.
Can some nice SQL expert provide assistance?

Current situation:
Our data source is Oracle and there is a particular column, called number_of_units, with datatype numeric(28, 0) that we will extract into SQL Server data destination.
However, in our SQL Server data destination this column has a datatype numeric(34, 14). This is because we used this column to do some basic calculation (e.g. number_of_units/60) and we need to keep the decimals in tact.
In our current SSIS, we do a select query with CAST from the data source:
SELECT CAST(number_of_units AS NUMERIC(34, 14)) AS number_of_units FROM TABLE_A;
Will casting up from numeric(28,0) to (34,14) cause bigger number of bytes to be transferred across from the data source? I am talking about millions of records over here.
Are there other better ways of doing it?
1) Don't do a CAST in the select query (i.e. SELECT number_of_units FROM TABLE_A).
2) Add a derived/calculated column with numeric(34,14) in SSIS to fill in the calculation.
3) Lastly, load the calculation into SQL Server data destination.

My users table contains a field called researchInterestId which looks like this: 1, 5, 10
This is because users where allows to select multiple options when choosing their research interests.
I have another table which contains the names of those research interests, which looks like this:
researchInterestId researchInterestName
1 Biology
2 Cancer
My question is, when selecting my list of users, i wish to also display the names of their research interests. I know how to inner join but im not sure in this case as there are multiple values (1, 5, 10)
Hope that makes sense and that someone can point me in the right direction or let me know what this type of query is called?

I am trying to do a simple select statement which returns data from the table. The criteria is only if the count of the records is more than 10. Say, if a vendor called test exists 10 times in the table, I would like to display that vendor only, if less than 10, then that vendor won't be displayed at all.
Here is what I have started.

and the Plan table

and ihave a sproc that will return the all the plans based on the clientId but i want to also get all the plans that have PlatformID 1 for the same client. This is my Sproc..

This is what I'm trying to do:

I have worked on developing a project that I am pleased to say is comming along nicely considering I have only been doing programming for a few weeks but I am now stuck and may be going down the wrong path.
I have two tables one that is used for logging via username and password, it also holds a third coloumn realting to the suers account that they do not enter. Once they have logged in I am recalling the users identity and running a query to establish what account the user belongs to. Later on in the script I am trying to run a query on a table called orders that list all orders belonging to that account that was established in the earlier query labelled as 'accountrequesting'.
The script I have below returns all orders for all accounts even though I have tried a wide variety of endings on the Sql search on the orders table.
The code may look a little untidy and to advanced programmers may look rough but I am still learning.....please can anyone help.

Hi,I have a need to create a table detailing the ID of all contacts and thelast time they were contacted. This information is stored in 2 tables,'contact' and 'activity' (ID in the 'contact' table links to 'main_contact'in the 'activity' table).I guess I need some sort if iteration to go through each contact and findfind the last activity that took place against each of them (there many bemore than 1 activity against each contact) and then place the output valuesinto the new table.Can anyone show me how to go about this?Thanks!

Any help with this would be great. I have SQL tables all in the following format:

ID_MEASURE,
MEASURE_VALUE
Now each table holds different measures e.g. 326, 229 & 278. I would like to subtract the measure_value of 229 from 278 and then add the measure_value from 278 from this. e.g
(326-229) + 278 = new measure_value.
This is for each id-product where the following 3 conditions meet:
the ID_PRODUCT, ID_MARKET AND ID_BUCKET match. Im lost, any help would be great.

They both have a db called claims. If I am on server 1 and want to write a sql statement I am stuck with the write syntax

The server is linked using the sa user. I know this is simple but in a hurry and stuck. THe servers are on same domain.

With the OLEDB source, is it wrong to use a table / view as a source and only check the columns required or is it beneficial to write a select col1, col2 etc etc as a SQL command?
I cannot see any difference in performance between the two.

I have a C# application that calls a stored procedure to query the database (MSSQL 2005). I only have one field/column returned from the query but I need that column ordered.
How do I use the ORDER BY clause without returning the index column which does the sorting? The first example is NOT what I want. I want something that works like the second example which only returns the 'Name' column.

im doing a sum on a table and it either returns a number in decimal format or 'null' . The problem is when it returns null i want it to just make the text say '0.00'. So i did a test on the object that if it returns NULL just print '0.00' but if it is not null it tells me that there is a number there and i want to store that as a decimal and print it out. But i get an error for a type cast when im not it should not even be going to that part of the code. Ok, using a stored procedure for SQL Server 2000 and here is the main part of it:
SELECT id, rank, firstName, lastName, service, status, createdTime FROM accessRequest WHERE lastName LIKE @tLastName AND firstName LIKE @tFirstName
And the C# code behind from the class file:
SqlDataReader spResults;
conn.Open();
spResults = command.ExecuteReader();
while( spResults.Read() )
{
AccessRequestSearch request = new AccessRequestSearch( (int)spResults.GetInt32( 0 ), spResults.GetString( 2 ), spResults.GetString( 3 ), spResults.GetString( 1 ), spResults.GetString( 4 ), spResults.GetString( 5 ), Convert.ToDateTime(spResults.GetString( 6 )));
searchResults.Add( request ); // Add to Array List
}
spResults.Close();
The part in red is where I think it's happening because that is what I just added to the request. createdTime in the table is set as DateTime.
Can anyone see what I am missing here?

I have a table with a column called Sample_Date_and_Teime with a row definition of char(16). What is stored in this table is a date (ie. 1020621141517000) The first char is the century, the next are the year, the next two are the month, the next two are the day, the next 2 the hour, the next two are the minutes, and the next 2 are the seconds and the last 3 are to be ignored... what I need to do is write a select statement that converts this column into a datetime so that I can then do a insert into a new table by selecting from this table based on a date range. PLEASE HELP:confused: :confused: :confused:
