Server 2008 Express Database Diagram Error
Sep 7, 2009
I am getting following error when I try to create the 1st diagram for my existing database in SQL server management studio . I am using sql server 2008 express. Operating system is Vista basic home.  I was able to get past the "no valid owner error" problem by using the ALTER PROCEDURE; now I have the following: Invalid column name 'uvalue'.Invalid column name 'uvalue'.Could not find stored procedure 'dbo.sp_upgraddiagrams'.Object is invalid. Extended properties are not permitted on 'dbo.sysdiagrams', or the object does not exist.Object is invalid. Extended properties are not permitted on 'dbo.sp_upgraddiagrams', or the object does not exist. (.Net SqlClient Data Provider)/

Problem 1: Upon starting SQL Server Express I get the following error:
"An unhandled exception has occurred in a component in your application....Cannot create a stable subkey under a volatile parent." Clicking OK lets the Server continue and I can use it quasi-normally.
Problem 2: Also, when I try to generate a diagram, I get a message that states
"Database diagram support objects cannot be installed because this database does not have a valid owner. To continue, first use the Files page of the Database Properties dialog box or the ALTER AUTHORIZATION statement to set the database owner to a valid login, then add the database diagram support objects."
But, the database HAS an owner, and resetting the owner (using the Files...) to other users has no effect.
Problem 3: I tried to change the name of a database, and it refused to do so. Except that now all objects under the database name (it is the same old name) have disappeared. Is there a magic folder somewhere that contains all of the tables, etc. that were 'banished' from the server?
Is there a way to detach the databases from Express and reattach them to the SQL Server 2000 I am also running? Last time I tried the 'detach' worked but all the objects were wiped out by the 'attach'. Handy feature.
Thanks
Glen

Hi,
I'm using Visual Studio 2008 and i guess the sql server comes with it is the 2005 express version. So, my problem is: when i try to create a new database diagram on a new .mdf database, i get the error "Invalid String Class".
I believe this has something to do with some unregistered dlls, but i dont know how to solve...
Any help?

I upgraded from SQL 2000 to SQL 2005. The database owner is sa and I am
logging in as sa in Management Studio. But when I click on Database

"Database diagram support objects cannot be installed because this
database does not have a valid owner. To continue, first use the
Files page of the Database Properties dialog box or the ALTER

How can I fix it?

I would occasionally get the error below when trying to access a database in my project/App_Data folder using Visual Web Developer Express 2008.
I would re-boot and the problem would go away.
I now have the problem all the time and am unable to access my database file in the App_Data folder nor ASPNETDB.mdf.
I am not trying to access a remote database. I have not knowingly changed any settings.
Has anyone seen this problem?
Can anyone help?
Thanks,
Charles Smith

When I'm trying to create a database diagram for my tables., First it prompts me saying that - "This database does not have one or more of the supported objects... Do you wish to create them? I know this is normal when you don't have any diagrams. But after clicking "Yes", I get the following error which is attached.
I tried changing the database Owner to "sa". But, still the same error. Interestingly, other databases that are already having the database diagrams (created by others), are allowing me to create new diagrams in those databases. The only difference is, I created this database where I'm trying to create diagrams on. How do I get this working.
Below is Error Message:

I have created a database with several tables. I want to create a database diagram to show the relationshipbetween the tables. Below are the steps from the SQL Server 2005 documentation on how to create a database diagram. The problem is that when I right click on the Database Diagrams folder I am only given two options. They are:"Working with SQL Server diagrams" and "Refresh"There is no menu choice to create a new database diagram. Can anyone tell me what the problem here is?
To create a new database diagramIn Object Explorer, right-click the Database Diagrams folder or any diagram in that folder.
Choose New Database Diagram on the shortcut menu.
The Add Table dialog box appears.
Select the required tables in the Tables list and click Add.
The tables are displayed graphically in the new database diagram.

Hello!
Recently, I set up server with Windows Web Server 2008 RC1, SQL 2008 Express beta, .NET 3.5, IIS 7.
I'm running ASP.NET web application with SQL database. Everything works fine until the first application state on the server expires. After that, any postback that starts a new application state on the server and connects to the database, results in the following error:
Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed.
Is this a bug that will be fixed in release of Windows / SQL or am I doing something wrong?
Many thanks for help,
Jan

Downloading and installing VS 2008 Express also created a Miscrosoft SQL Server folder. How do I install the SQL Server 2005 Express? The following is what I found from the HELP menu bar of the VS 2008 Express. Where can I find the sqlexpr.exe?
TIA,Jeffrey
To install SQL Server Express To begin installation, double-click sqlexpr.exe. Note: SQL Server Express is available as a self-extracting executable file (sqlexpr.exe) from both the Visual Studio 2005 CD and the SQL Server Express Web site. SQLEXPR.EXE installs on x86-based computers and to the 32-bit subsystem (WOW64). For more information, see Hardware and Software Requirements (SQL Server Express)

How can I create a one-to-one relationship in a SQL Server Management Studio Express Relationship diagram?
For example:
I have 2 tables, tbl1 and tbl2.
tbl1 has the following columns:
id {uniqueidentifier} as PK
name {nvarchar(50)}
tbl2 has the following columns:
id {uniqueidentifier} as PK
name {nvarchar(50)}
tbl1_id {uniqueidentifier} as FK linked to tbl1.id
If I drag and drop the tbl1.id column to tbl2 I end up with a one-to-many relationship. How do I create a one-to-one relationship instead?

I have been following the Visual Basic Guided Tour for VB 2008 Express and I'm having a problem with the following part.
ms-help://MS.VSCC.v90/MS.msdnexpress.v90.en/dv_vbcnexpress/html/48fcb538-d8c7-4299-a2bf-a5b6f80d879d.htm
Creating LINQ to SQL Classes: Using the O/R Designer
I am getting the error "Generating user instances in SQL Server is disabled. Use sp_configure 'user instances enabled' to generate user instances.", when I get to the Test Connection button.
I have found the following help page,
ms-help://MS.VSCC.v90/MS.msdnexpress.v90.en/SqlExpressBol/html/85385aae-10fb-4f8b-9eeb-cce2ee7da019.htm
but I have no idea how to use this information as it assumes the user knows what they are doing!
The solution appears to involve running a scipt of some sort, but where would that be run?
I have looked at the SQL server Express information, but can't find how to run sp_configure.
Your help would be much appreciated.

I have an application written with Visual Basic Express 2008, which has a Sql Server Express Compact database incorporated into the application. I've been trying to follow the suggestions listed on several threads on how to backup up my database and have not gotten very far. The following code seems to be in most threads.
Dim dbstring = "Data Source=.SQLExpress;Integrated Security=true;User Instance=true;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|ImmuLogDataBase.sdf"
Dim sqlconn As New SqlClient.SqlConnection(dbstring)
sqlconn.Open()
When run, this code returns the following error at the sqlconn.Open() command.
An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file G:ImmuLogImmuLoginDebugImmuLogDataBase.sdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share.
My solution is saved on a flash drive which I take between home and work. I'm hoping that that isn't the issue. I believe that Visual Basic loads the database when it starts and it is already open when this code is run. Is there a way to access this open database and run a backup procedure on it from within VB express 2008?
I'm new to this and self taught so explain everything in detail. Thanks for your help.

Description: Database 'XXX' cannot be upgraded because it is
read-only or has read-only files. Make the database or files writeable, and
rerun recovery.
What does it mean?

I get an error dialog when I try to create a new SQL database, both via the Add New Item dialog and the property wizard of a new SqlDataSource control. The error is:
Local Database File:
User does not have permission to perform this action.
I've searched for help with this.
I ensured the App_Data folder exists and I added the local ASP.NET account to the group that have R/W access to it (although the RO flag is in an unchangeable tri-state on the folder).
The SQL Server Express error log is clean and indicates full functionality.
Everything is running locally.
No VWD installation errors.
Any ideas?
Thank you!

I was wondering if this is normal. I am creating a website in VS 2008. I created a SQL db and am using SQL server express.
I can go into SQL server managment studio express and open the DB when I start my PC. I can still access the DB when I start VS 2008 and my project but when I run the project I can not access the DB any longer even when the project is not longer running and I'm in design mode. Even if I close VS 2008 I still cannot access DB through SQL server managment. The only way I can access the DB again is if I restart my PC.
Is this normal?
I am running Vista Ultimate.
Thanks,
Ty
