Server Failed To Listen On [ 'any' &&<ipv4&&> 0 ]

We have a customer who is trying to get sql server 2005 express edition installed on their pc to continue using our application but the sql server instance is not starting.
If we have him go into services and try and start the service for the named instance of sql server express it gives us a "The sql server [sqlexpress] service on local computer started then stopped" error message.
We looked into the event log and the error message we saw there was "server failed to listen on [ 'any' <ipv4> 0 ]"
Anyone have any idea? I can provide further details if necessary, but they are hard to obtain since I do not have access to the computer, and our customer is not very computer savvy.
One detail i can add is they have office small business accounting installed, and it has created an instance of sql server 2000. I was thinking there may be a conflict here but i was unable to reproduce anything on my machines with msde and sql server 2005 express.
The computer is windows xp home edition, and has service pack 2 installed.

I use SQL Server 2000 as my database. I use WinXP and my computer does not connect to any network.
But I can't telnet localhost 1433.
When I open the file ERRORLOG, it displays:
"2005-01-06 22:36:22.43 server SQL server listening on Shared Memory, Named Pipes."
I checked the enable protocols, they are Named Pipes and TCP/IP and default port is 1433.
But I can't telnet to it. I can't understand why.
Anybody can help me? Thanks.

Hi all!I just tried to enable TCP/IP on SQL Server 2000 (trial, SP3a). TheServer Network Utility shows it's already turned on, but afterrestarting the server doesn't listen to any TCP port, and in theeventlog it reports "SuperSocket info: gethostbyname(MSAFD Tcpip[TCP/IP]) : Error 11004." and "SuperSocket info: (SpnRegister) : Error2102.". I want to know how to check whether SQL Server 2000 can listen to port 1433 or not. If I run netstat -a, am I suppose to see port 1433 regardless of what service pack I have applied to SQL Server 2000?

Been having SQL Server 2000 running for some time now, but recently it stopped listening on TCP port 1433, the log reports its listening on shared memory, Named pipes and Rpc, but no sign of 127.0.0.1 port 1433 or any errors to say why it won't listen.
I've done a netstat -na and nothing else is listening on that port, tried restarting using the enterprise manager, gonna try restarting the entire Server when everyone has gone home, but I'm pretty sure its been restarted recently.
All the other archive logs going back a few days show its not listening.
Yes, I have used the Server network utility to make sure TCP/IP is enabled and set to 1433, even added a comma and 1434 to see if it will listen on multiple ports, no go.
Any help?

Setting: sql 2000 default instance installed. Installed a sql 2005 named instance.
I want to configure the sql 2005 instance to listen on a partcular TCP port. (I followed the instructions in KB article 177440.)
"SQL Config Manager" > Protocols for "Instance" > Right-click TCP/IP > Properties, I found about 5 IP addresses and an "IPALL" address (pretty good for a home machine with one NIC!).
Per the article, I removed the 0 from TCP Dynamic Ports and put the desired port number ("4567") in the port value, restarted the sql instance, and found this using "xp_readerrorlog" this:

Server is listening on [ 'any' <ipv6> 4567].
Server is listening on [ 'any' <ipv4> 4567].
.....
.....
Server is listening on [ ::1 <ipv6> 49277].
Server is listening on [ 127.0.0.1 <ipv4> 49277].
It looks like my instance is now listening on the desired port (success) but also, still, using a dynamic port. Did I do something wrong or can the dynamic port simply not be eliminated?

Hi,
I am administering several SQL Servers running SQL Server 2005 SP2 Build 3042.
I have a common maintenance plan that runs on each of the servers. The maintenance plan runs
fine on all the servers except for one. On the one server the Database Integrity check fails with the following error:
Check Database integrity on Local server connection
Databases: <list of databases>
Include indexes
Task start: 2008-02-21T00:05:42.
Task end: 2008-02-21T00:05:46.
Failed0) Alter failed for Server €˜XYZ€™
I created a test maintenance plan to just do the integrity check and selected one database only and this also failed with the same error message. I ran this test maintenance plan and configured it for each of the databases in question and it failed each time.
If I run the DBCC manually against the databases they all report fine.
I read some of the post that talked about the €œAllow Updates€? being set incorrectly but that does not apply to my problem since my configured and run values are set to 0.
Does anyone know what the problem could be?

i'm using the Enterpirse library logger to write logs into a database.
When choosing connection string i choose the database i want in the "connection properties" dialog box and
push 'Test connection' button.
everything goes well.
then i open the SQL Server Management studio express and connect to the databse to check some things,
from that point on , when i push the 'Test Connection' button in the Enterprise library i get the error:
"cannot open user default database. Login failed. login failed for user My'server/MyuserName'"
even when i close the sql server manager , it is still stuck - the connection test doesn't work anymore....
it only work when i restart the computer.
why ?

I wrote an application using Visual Studio 2005 beta 2 which uses a SQL Express .mdf file, included in the project, for the database. After installing Visual Studio 2005 RC and the SQL Express that comes with it (I followed all of the uninstall instructions first) I can no longer add a SQL Express database to any of my projects, nor can I open the SQL Express database in my original project. When I try either of these tasks, I get the "Failed to generate user instance of SQL Server due to a failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection will be closed." I read the thread which dealt with this error, and changed the connection string for the database file that had worked before to User Instance = false. The moment I click Test Connection or OK, I get the error: "An attempt to attach an auto-named database for file C:<path to project>EngSQL.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file cannot be opened, or it is located on UNC share." (<path to project> is actually a full path, I didn't want to type the whole thing out. :) ). A search for this error turns up a solution of setting User Instance = false, which puts me in a catch 22 position.

I have log shipping set up between 2 SQL 2000 SP1 Servers on Win 2000. The db is small 10 meg, and when the restore job on the backup server fails I am getting "sqlmaint.exe failed. [SQLSTATE 42000] (Error 22029). The step failed." as the message, the maint paln on the primary server show no error. Anyone seen this before? The restore has worked 3 out of 5 times

I am running the Sept CTP. I have created a SSIS package that pulls data from a text file and inserts into a database. When I run the package on the DB server it runs fine. I have moved the package the the web server (we are attempting to kick off the package from a web site) and we get connections errors. We are running the package using dtexec from the command line.

I've set up a website on another computer using sql server express and visual web developer express, and it works as expected. However halfway through the development i've had to move to another computer. I installed visual web developer express + sql server express, and copied the project files across, but now when I attempt to run it I get the error:Failed to generate a user instance of SQL Server due to a
failure in starting the process for the user instance. The connection
will be closed. I've tried reinstalling the software and it doesn't help. Any idea why this is happening, and what I can do to fix it?thanks

As an 'SA' I thought that you have permission to do anything on the server. Running an update command from Query Analyzer is throwing this error:

I have installed SQL Server 2005 Express on my desktop (Win 2000 Pro.)
I have created a new database.
I just created a new login/user (SQL Authentication) and when I try to login, it
errors out:

I believe the error is from SQL Server and not from ODBC driver.

I installed Micrsoft Server Desktop Engine from the CD I received in
my ASP.net book. The installation went fine and then I went to the DOS
prompt and did the "setup SAPWD..." and it ran. I restarted my computer and
opened ASP Matrix and went to the Data tab and proceed to connect to
the server. It gave me an error message it couldn't connect.
So I
uninstalled MSDE and made sure the sql2ksp3 folder was gone. So I went
ahead and installed the MSDE again from the CD again and then went to
DOS
to do the setup. It ran through the setup until the very end with 11
seconds remaining and received error message " Setup failed to
configure the server. Refer to the server error logs and setup logs for
more information. I have tried it several times and it always
stops around 11 seconds. I have tried to install the download from
microsoft.com
instead the CD and that didn't work also. So at this point I
am stuck. PLEASE HELP!
I also checked my Registry keys for a file called PendingFileRenameOperations and it wasn't in the registry keys.
If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it.

Hello,
I moved the web app. I'm working on to another machine. Everything seemed to go well. Installed Reporting Services and configuration worked well with green ticks everywhere and I'm running reports in Report manager and in Visual Studio. However running off the web app. gives the message:
"The attempt to connect to Report Server failed" - there's also a ref. to an HTTP 404 error.
In RSWebApplication.config I have :
<ReportServerUrl></ReportServerUrl>
<ReportServerVirtualDirectory>ReportServer</ReportServerVirtualDirectory>
and in RSreportserver.config I have:
<UrlRoot><server IP>/Reportserver</UrlRoot>
The install might not have gone as well as I thought because there was a "ReportServer" website created in IIS at same level as default. (Also Reports and ReportServer as virtual directories under Default website). The rogue website is 'stopped' at present. Would be grateful for any help with this. One thing is that I'm now behind a proxy so I'm using localhost:8080
