Server Problem Occurred During Deployment Of Vb.net Application With MSSQL Db
Jan 6, 2006
I use .net 2005 and server, the application i developed connects to a locally hosted mssql db, I want to deploy the application together with the db to client machine.
when i installed the application on the target machine, and run the application, it gave me this message : "an error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - could not open a connection to SQL Server)
I didn't quite understand this message. because in the "SQL Server Configuration Manager", i set the SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) to "Automatic" start mode, which means that it is connected, doesnt it?
plz help
previously i was seeking help on vb.net forum, but got stuck on database distribution. please read more: http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=192093&SiteID=1&mode=1

I deployed my application to my newly installed xp pro laptop
The prerequisites are installed
Now that I want to testdrive my database application I get this error:
An attempt to attach an auto-named database file c:/program files........................MyDB.mdf failed. A database with the same name exists, or specified file can not be opened, or it is located on UNC share.
This is what I read in my app.config file;
<connectionStrings>
<add name="MasterDetail.My.MySettings.MyDBConnectionString" connectionString="Data Source=.SQLEXPRESS;AttachDbFilename=|DataDirectory|MyDB.mdf;Integrated Security=True;User Instance=True"
providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />
</connectionStrings>
What could I be doing wrong? If there is need for additional information you have to tell me
Thanks, Richard

We have vendor from we puchased an application. It is going into production next week
and we have our final set of table ddl and it includes stored procedures.
Since I am fairly new to MSSQL 6.5, and forced to include the stord procedures within
the application, I would like to get some feedback as to whether or not stored proceures
are efficient or are going to cause me problems?
Aside from periodically running sp_recompile what else will I need to do?
Any information that can be provided willl be greatly appreciated. THanks.

Hi,
I'd like to get the experts' advice on whether SQL server 2005 Express edition (SSE) is suitable for medium scale web applications.
I have looked through the reviews of SSE. From what I understand, its limitations over the MSSQL 2005 Standard are:
1. SSE limits database size to 4GB and memory to 1GB.
2. Support for only 1 CPU.
3. No analysis or reporting services.
4. No full text indexing
5. No SQL Agent.
I have a web application that is currently running on a shared web host with a shared MSSQL 2000 database. I'm thinking of shifting to a Virtual Private Server, where I can install SSE for free.
Currently my app has about 14,000 page views a month, and each of them pulls out data from the database. I don't use any analysis or reporting services, or full text indexing or SQL Agent (for now).
My questions:
1. Is 1GB memory sufficient for this type of application?
2. Is there any reason I should not be using SSE for my type of application?
Thanks in advance for the help.

To whom it may concern,
I have developed a web application using ASP 3.0 with a Access DB 2002 backend. I have decided to recently to upgrade the database to SQL 2005 but I am having issues that I cannot work out because I am new to MsSql Language. It appears that the FORMAT function in Access does not work in MsSql ( does not recognise the function ) along with some of the PIVOT and TRANSFORM calls (coming up with "Syntax error near "..."") . Please see the below code. The areas that are showing up as errors when the application is run are highlighted in red.
Thanking you in advance

I have an application that uses Acces as a backend and VBA as front end. Application is secured and is supplied on a CD with setup.exe.
Can I use VB 2005 and MS SQL to achieve the same?
Would I be able to package my application with all the neccessery files (assuming that client does not have any e.g. SQL server) so that multiple front ends can access data from common source?
Would I be able to secure such an application using only VS 2005?
What would I need to quickly learn how to achieve the above ( any books you can suggest maybe)?

My site works fine in VWD2008 express, but I get this error when I try to use it on my live website.
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections.
According to this article: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914277 I am supposed to:
1.
Click Start, point to Programs, point to Microsoft SQL Server 2005, point to Configuration Tools, and then click SQL Server Surface Area Configuration.
Ok, there is no such program in this folder. The only thing in there is "SQL Server Error and Usage Reporting"...
The other thing I am greatly concerned with is this: All is want is for my webpages to be able to access my database for user authentication. I DO NOT want to grant the internet rights to remote connect to my database.

I get the following error and have been trying to figure out why I keep getting it. Initially, I had placed my project under wwwroot folder and ran it under IIS and it gave this error. Then I moved it to my local C drive and same thing. I am sharing this project with two other co-workers and all our config files and code files are same...they don't get this error but I do. I checked that SQL Server Client Network Utility has TCP/IP and the 'Named Pipes' enabled. I thought maybe I have setting in the Visual Studio 2005 that I'm not aware of that's causing this problem...it can't be the server since my co-workers aren't having this error and can't be anything in the code since all of us are sharing this project through vss. I dont' think using different version of .net framework can create this error. I changed the version from 2.0 to use 1.1x and it gave same error... Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

We've devoted a resource to this today, but I have to believe it's something easy that we're overlooking. The scneario is that we have a production Web application that until last weekend had a SQL 2000 back end. This weekend we installed a new instance of SQL 2005 and everything works (we tested in a sandbox environment, but someone must not have load tested enough) and never saw these exceptions. So, after the upgrade we now receive 100's of thexe SQL excptions per day:A transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.)A transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the server. (provider: TCP Provider, error: 0 - The specified network name is no longer available.)Does anyone know what we've overlooked that's causing this issue? Thanks for any help!

Hello,
I'm having trouble getting my Sql connections working 100%. My pages usually connect ok, but sometimes for a reason I can't understand I get connection errors. I always use the connection string in web.config so there's only one connection string for the whole project.
I can be on one page, do nothing and just press F5, usually it works but sometimes it doesn't. It just throws this error. I've checked the surface area configuration and tcp/ip is of course allowed remotely. The weird thing is that it only happens sometimes, stops working for like 2-5 minutes and then starts working again. It might be some firewall related problem, but if so, what ports do Sql need to use tcp/ip connections? This might fix it but I don't think so, since it runs just fine on a Win2003 Server with the same firewall. On my local development machine (Vista) I get this problem.
Below is the complete error message:
"An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified) "
Thanks beforehand for any and all replies!

I downloaded a project code for a project which was in the book ASP.Net instant results.
The code also came with a MDF file. I had sql server 2005 not Sql Server Express . So attached the mdf file to sql server succesfully. I could even see the tables and its data.
I could even get the website running. My web config file properly specifies the sql server and database. Here is the webconfig file line..
<add name="AppointmentBooking" connectionString="Data Source=DESKTOPDESKTOP;Initial Catalog=AppointDB;User ID=***;Password=********;Trusted_Connection = yes"
But when I try the register operation, I get following error. Any suggestions...???

I have SQL Server 2000, and a mix of workstations running XP Pro and 2000.I have several Excel reports that link via ODBC to SQL. My 2000 machines link up fine; however my XP machine get the following error: "An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default setting SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - could not open connection to SQL Server)" Again, I do not have SQL Server 2005, and I only get this message from XP Machines (with Firewalls DISABLED). Once we click OK on the error, it updates anyway. The ODBC driver for SQL Server is 2000.85.1117.00 on our XP machines. ANY ideas would be GREATLY APPRECIATED!TIA,Krista

System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. My connection string is (.Net 2.0 Web application)

I have tried many ways but not working
1) Firewall Off

3) Change the (DB Server) machine name to IP.
4) I have give the TCP/IP port number followed by DBServerName (1433).
5) In SQL server 2005 - Changed the 'Surface Area Configuration' settings from Local Only to Remote
Still i'm getting the same exception.

I recently re-formated my personal server and installed SQL Server 2005 on it instead of 2000 which I previously used.
Now, I have imported the databases to the new SQL Server 2005, but I seem to get the following error when trying to access the database (from my asp.net page)
I've googled and searched the forum, without any luck. Now I was hoping for someone to answer this question, or perhaps guide me in the right direction.
Note: I've tried 5-6 different solutions that I found on the net, in vain.

I just installed Microsoft SQL Server Express SP2. I setup a linked server to an Oracle database using the followings commands:
EXEC sp_addlinkedserver 'Oracle_DEV', 'Oracle', 'MSDAORA', 'DEV'
EXEC sp_addlinkedsrvlogin 'Oracle_DEV ', false, NULL, 'oracledbuser', 'dbuserpassword'
When I try and query the linked database I get the following error message:
Msg 109, Level 20, State 0, Line 0
A transport-level error has occurred when receiving results from the server. (provider: Shared Memory Provider, error: 0 - The pipe has been ended.)
I've been searching the web and have gotten a lot of hits on the error message but have yet to uncover anything specifically related to linked servers or anything closely related enough to help me resolve this problem. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

I have a distributed environment with SQL Server 2005 SP2 (RTM) running on one server. This server holds the databases for SharePoint and Reporting Services. I then have SharePoint 3.0 (32-bit version) with the reporting services add-in installed on a second server. I installed the sharepoint object model (64-bit version) on the database server as suggested and have configured Reporting Services to use domain user accounts. The Reporting Services configuration tool is reporting that integration has been successfully set up but I am unable to access the "Set Server Defaults" page without an error. This is the error I receive:

I have a SP SQL server that uses Handshake for the web parts. I am getting an error on SharePoint about 'An error occurred during Service Master Key Decryption' inside the web parts of the page, everything else comes up, from what I have researched MS says go under SQL Configuration Manager and change the service account. Is this the correct course of action for this type of error? I am just having a hard time believing that changing the engines service account will stop this issue, this account is used on several SQL server with no issues.
