Setting Up Data Connections

Aug 16, 2007

Hi, I am new to MS visual web developer but i do not have any coding experience and i need some help please.
Using Microsoft Visual Web Developer I clicked on create my personal website but the problem is I've created the database but do not know how to connect it to the log in wizard or createNewUser wizard.
Is there a way to connecting them using drag and drops or setting it from the properties? If not what would be a sample code for it?

Thank you in advanced

Setting Passwords In Connections Using Script Task

Feb 23, 2006

I have a situation where I have to read an encrypted password from a table and set the password and userID for the connections. I wrote functions to retrieve the data from a table, decrypt the password and UserID, and set the connection string for the connection. What happens, though, is that the connection string I wrote to the connection gets changed when reading it back so that the password is no longer included. Also, in testing the connection, it fails, telling me login fails. Can anyone shed any light on this? Does anyone have sample code to show the setting of a password for a connection in a script task? All of the examples I find are for Integrated security.

SSIS Data Connections In A Job

Feb 7, 2008

Hello!

I'm working with SSIS and using a third party data provider to a proprietary data source. SSIS wraps the provider in an ADO wrapper and everything runs perfectly.

So what's the problem? Well, I need to use this data provider multiple times in a package, and we have limited licenses for the provider. If I run the SSIS package by itself, once again it runs perfectly. The problem arises when I attempt to run the package in a job. When I run the job it hangs, because the data provider throws a modal warning window that runs in the background, telling me that I've run out of licenses.

It would appear that when I run the SSIS package independently, it makes the calls to the data provider sequentially because those tasks are sequential. However, when I attempt to run it as a job, it attempts to grab the multiple connections to the provider at the same time, causing me to run out of licenses.

Is there a way to modify this behavior in the job, and have it call those data connections sequentially?

Thanks for your help,

ADoinel

Data Connections: Where The Hell Are They Stored??!!

Jul 21, 2007

Hello all,

Does anybody know where SSIS Data Connections are stored? Whenever one creates a Connection Manager, a list of all created Data Connections appears. It's very quick and easy to create a Connection Manager from an existing Data Connection, so really the latter are in essence the Connection Managers and are thus part of the application. It is therefore important to back them up if for example one wants to migrate the application to another computer. I have looked everywhere in Documents and Settings and Program Files and I can't find any folder or file where these Data Connections are stored! It's annoying to have this mysterious black-box behaviour!

Does anybody know?

Thanks in advance,

Setting Database Data

Apr 4, 2008

I'm having trouble changing data in my database. It is actually a VB cuestion, but you see, i just finished lesson 9 of the begginers Visual Basic 2005 video series and in my last run i can't save the data i've changed into the database. no errors are shown, it just does't change the values.
i know for a fact that the code is well written and there is no problem with the configuration of buttons and such, because i folowed the steps 50 times so I believe it must be a SQL configuration problem.
does anybony have any insight on what the problem might be.

Best Way To Handle Data Connections For Multiple Users And Executions.

May 3, 2008

 basically, is it inefficient to open and close a data connection everytime data needs to be retrieved or is there a way for a user to use the same conenction over multiple pages orfor multiple users to share one global data connection I just wanted to know this before I built a site where data could be constantly being pulled or put into the database.It would be easier to just keep opening and closing the connection since it just means pasting in the small chunk of code I use to do that where I need it. I hear speak of connections sometimes not closing etc and wonder if that is an issue then if you are opening and closing too many of them. I am using SqlConnection SqlCommand and SqlDatareader , my code works, just wondering if my approach lacked scalability before I find out too late and have to rewrite everything . Jim

SQL 2012 :: Script In SSIS To Check Data Connections / Sources

script in SSIS to check data connections/sources and send an email if it fails validation. I found this script online, but I'm not real good with scripting and only VB scripting at that.How can I modify this script or is there another one here that will do what I need. The data connection in question links to Salesforce and will fail validation if the password/security token is invalid.

The reason I need this script is that we have no control over the password changes and need to know if the salesforce team changes the password without informing us.

Setting Up ODBC Data Source For SQL Server

Jan 22, 2007

I am running Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition, and I am having difficulties setting up an ODBC User Data Source to connect to the SQL server.
I have tried going through "Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Data Sources (ODBC)" to add a user data source. For the SQL Server to connect to, I have tried specifying "localhostSQLEXPRESS", "SQLEXPRESS", "(local)", etc. -- but nothing seems to work. When the DSN configuration wizard tries to connect to the SQL Server to obtain default settings, it fails with the error "SQL Server does not exist or access denied". (Same error occurs if I try connecting to this ODBC data source later.)
But I know that the SQL Server exists and I have been using it through the SQL Server data provider in another application.
I am new to this, so any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Kumar

Setting Up Directories - Data Paths In Server?

Aug 4, 2015

I'm curious if there's a "best practice" for setting up the data directories MS SQL will use for each operation? I've allocated independent disks for things like C: (OS), E: (DATA), etc etc etc but I'm not familiar w/ MS SQL to understand how DBA's commonly configure the folders under each unique disk for things like DATA, LOGS, BACKUP, INDEXES, and TEMPDB. Should I have an identically name folder as show below in my example?

You can see I've just mirrored the drive name to a new folder under the partition so data is being written to: F:DATA and E:LOGS. Is this considered correct / good practice? I assume naming the folder in each mount point to whatever I logically called the drive is correct but if I should change how I configure my drive paths above. I'm trying to learn common good SQL Server practices and while I work on properly installing SQL Server 2012/2014, I want to make sure I configure my partition names SQL will utilize correctly.

Setting Variable Values From Within A Data Flow

Feb 15, 2008

Hello There:
I am running a data flow within a ForEach loop wherein I am computing a value called QuotaGap. When it is 0 I do not want any further execution of the loop. I am using a Conditional Transform within this dataflow that writes a record to a table only when the QuotaGap is NOT 0. However, I am unable to terminate the execution of the loop as I am still within the dataflow.

Now, the computation of the gap requires a value from another variable called NetPurchases. I tried using an ExecuteSQL task in the control flow but could not figure out how to pass the value of the variable NetPurchases into the select statement to compute the gap. For example, the select statement would read:

select (QuotaUpperLimit - ?) As QuotaGap from <<tablename>>

I tried setting the parameter as an input as well as an output and it did not work.

Then I tried passing the entire SQL as a string within a variable. This does not work either because in order to compute the math QuotaUpperLimit - NetPurchases, both variables need to be integers but then you cannot concatenate integres together, which is what we need to do to create the SQL.

The other reason I am going through these hoops I guess is that I have not figured out a way to set the value of a variable within a data flow. I compute the value for QuotaGap within the dataflow in a ForEach loop but I have no way to pass this result to a variable called QuotaGap without using an ExecuteSQL task or another ForEach Loop.

I have spent hours on this simple issue and so have given up and looking to the good friends in this forum for help.

If what I have stated is not clear please let me know and I will try to clarify things a bit.

Thanks!

The datasource for my report doesn't require credentials. By default after I upload the report to Reporting Services, the Data Source Credentials property is set to "Credentials supplied by the user running the report". How do I go about setting the Data Source Credentials property to "Credentials are not required" programmatically through the webservice?

Questions Relating To Setting Up Web Server For RDA Data Transfer

Nov 23, 2007

Our mobile application using VS2005 with VB.net is ready and we are trying to set up the SQL CE on the server to test the remote connection procedures. Sql 2005 is based on a dedicated server and is accessed via the Web server which does not have Sql installed on it. We have installed the Sql Server Me Server Tools on the Web server and configured the Virtual directory with IIS. What we cannot get our heads around is how we link the database on the separate Sql server via the web server. When the Pda contacts the Web server via IIS we somehow need to redirect to the dedicated Sql server as it cannot be contacted outside of our network. We have been told that Sql Ce can link with an existing Sql 2005 database, how can we do this?

Data Mining :: Implementing Excel Data Mining In A Classroom Setting?

Jun 15, 2015

Implementing data mining Add-in in an academic setting?  We need to handle over 150 new students a semester and have their connection to Analysis Services survive for their four years at the college.  We are introducing data mining to every freshman business student as a unit within their Intro to Excel class (close to a month of work to give them a sense of what is possible).  Other courses later in their curriculum will expand on that introduction.

Once implemented, we would have as many as 900 connections to manage (four years from now).  It is possible that multiple sections will be running at the same time, so 40 students may be accessing the data mining tools concurrently.

Is there a way to "bulk establish" the access credentials and establish those databases?

Need Help - Converting OLEDB Connections To SQL Connections In Asp.net

May 17, 2005

Hi there,
        Here we have got a

to SQL server 2000. When the database was on 6.5 the previous
development team has used oledb connections all over. As the databases
have been moved to SQL server 2000 now i am in process of changing the
database connection part. As part of the process i have a login
authorization code.
Private Function Authenticate(ByVal username As String, ByVal password As String, ByRef results As NorisSetupLib.AuthorizationResult) As Boolean
Dim conn As IDbConnection = GetConnection()

Dim cmd As IDbCommand = conn.CreateCommand()
Dim sql As String = "EDSConfirmUpdate" '"EDSConfirmUpdate""PswdConfirmation"
'Dim cmd As SqlCommand = New SqlCommand("sql", conn)

cmd.CommandText = sql
cmd.CommandType = CommandType.StoredProcedure
NorisHelpers.DBHelpers.AddParam(cmd, "@logon", username)
NorisHelpers.DBHelpers.AddParam(cmd, "@password", password)
conn.Open()
'Get string for return values
Dim ReturnValue As String = cmd.ExecuteScalar.ToString
'Split string into array
Dim Values() As String = ReturnValue.Split(";~".ToCharArray)
'If the return code is CONTINUE, all is well. Otherwise, collect the
'reason why the result failed and let the user know
If Values(0) = "CONTINUE" Then
Return True
Else
results.Result = Values(0)
'Make sure there is a message being returned
If Values.Length > 1 Then
results.Message = Values(2)
End If
Return False
End If
Catch ex As Exception
Throw ex
Finally
If (Not conn Is Nothing AndAlso conn.State = ConnectionState.Open) Then
conn.Close()
End If
End Try
End Function

Dim conn As IDbConnection = New System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection
conn.ConnectionString = NorisHelpers.DBHelpers.GetConnectionString(NorisHelpers.DBHelpers.COMMON)
Return conn
End Function
in the above GetConnection() method i
have commented out the .net dataprovider for oledb and changed it to
.net dataprovider for SQLconnection. this function works fine. But in
the authenticate method above at the line
Dim ReturnValue As String = cmd.ExecuteScalar.ToString

for some reason its throwing the below error.
Run-time exception thrown : System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException - @password is not a parameter for procedure EDSConfirmUpdate.
If i comment out the
Dim conn As IDbConnection = New System.Data.SqlClient.SqlConnection
and uncomment the .net oledb provider,
Dim conn As IDbConnection = New System.Data.OleDb.OleDbConnection
then it works fine.
I also have changed the webconfig file as  below.
<!--<add

<add key="Common" value='User ID=**secret**;pwd=**secret**;Data Source="ESMALLDB2K";Initial Catalog=cj_common;' />

BULK INSERT, Setting Static Data Using The Format File

Mar 2, 2004

Hello dbforums,

I are using a BULK INSERT to insert the data from a ascii file to a sql table. The table has a ProductInstanceId column that exists in the tables but does not exist in the ascii DICast data. I am setting the ProductInstanceId to a Guid that will be used for Metrics. I would like to create the Guid in C++ and then set it somehow during the BULK INSERT DICastRaw1hr and DICastRaw6hr. I am calling the BULK INSERT from C++/ADO. I do not see how you can set a static data in the BULK INSERT for a column that exists in the table but does not the source data ... seems there should be a way to do this with the format file?

The other way to do this is with a TRIGGER. I have the TRIGGER below. Prior to the calling the BULK INSERT using ADO I will use ADO to ALTER the TRIGGER with the new Guid. When the BULK INSERT runs the ProductInstanceId will be populated with the new Guid.

ALTER TRIGGER DICastRaw1hrInsertGuid
ON Alphanumericdata.dbo.DICastRaw1hr
FOR INSERT AS UPDATE dbo.DICastRaw1hr SET ProductInstanceId = '4f9a44eb-092b-445b-a224-cc7cdd207092'
WHERE modelrundatetime = (select max(modelrundatetime) from Alphanumericdata.dbo.DICastraw1hr(NOLOCK))

More Questions:

- The Trigger is slow. The Bulk Insert without the Trigger runs in about 10 sec ... with the Trigger in about 40 sec. I tried to use the sql code below in the TRigger but it was only doing the UPDATE on the last row. The TRIGGER must run after the BULK INSERT is complete. Now I am using the select (bad). Any comments ...

ALTER TRIGGER DICastRaw1hrInsertDate
ON Alphanumericdata.dbo.DICastRaw1hr
FOR INSERT
AS
DECLARE @ID as integer
SELECT @ID = i.recordid from inserted i
UPDATE dbo.DICastRaw1hr SET ProductInstanceId = '4f9a44eb-092b-445b-a224-cc7cdd207092'
WHERE recordid = @ID

- I understand that I could set the Guid in the Default Value part of the table definition using the NEWID() function. I need the Guid to be the same for all the rows that are inserted during the BULK INSERT (all have the same modelrundatetime) ... how would I do this?

Thanks,
Chris

May 21, 2013

My company is new to MDS. I am trying to set an attritube in an entity to read only so the users can't change the value in that field. When I did that, the whole model disappeared. I thought I had deleted it by accident so I created a test model and tried to do the same. The test model disappeared. This time, before saving the new settings I took a snapshot. After saving I took another snapshot. You can see that the whole model is gone (zz_RN_Permissions_Test). I tried every other coworker with admin rights and nobody shows it on the Models list. The behavior on the Excel add-in is correct. I can't change any values on that column. But I need to keep the models available.

See before and after snapshots below.
