Setting Up Read-only Users. How To Hide Sys. Tables. SQL SERVER 2005
Oct 16, 2006
I need to set up 1 new user in SQL Server 2005 to be able to read specific tables in a db (db1).
The user will connect from MS access using odbc links (SQL Native client ot SQL Server driver)
I've tried to set up one and once logged on from the user workstation, I can only see sys. tables and INFORMATION_SCHEMA tables.
None of the required db1 tables appear.
under Security/Logins I've created User1:
SQL Server auth. with password
default db = db1
server_roles = none
user mapping = map, db1, user1,dbo
securables = none
status = grant, enabled
on the access db, the odbc link was set up with default db = db1
Why can't I see any of the db1 tables?
How can I restrict access to the sys. tables?
Thank you

How can I hide the system tables (sys and INFORMATION_SCHEMA) from users? I am not talking about Management Studio. We have users who access the database with ODBC and I do not want them to see all these system tables.
I have created a Hide_System_Tables role and added users to it. I have tried denying all the permissions to this role, but they still see it. Oddly enough, in the INFORMATION_SCHEMA permissions, it shows access from grantors of INFORMATION_SCHEMA and dbo. I cannot deny permission for the entries with dbo as grantor.
Does anyone have any suggestions on where I have to go to remove all the places that give users access to these tables?
Thanks,
Mike

Hi,
Can someone help me to hide all system views/tables from users?
I do not want the users to see all system tables/views, so they can have a clear view for only user tables in their schema.
Thx,
Vicki

An IBM Global Services consultant is telling my client that in order to have SAP BI read any data from any other application supported by SQL Server 2005, that all tables and fields MUST be in UPPER CASE. This would mean that SAP BI could not read ANY data from AdventureWorks (which everyone needs ) but more importantly from 95% of applications written and stored on SQL Server. I find this to be ludicrious, frankly, but don't know how to find out if it is true. Anyone?

I have SQL Server 7 database & I need to create some interface between users & database to let users see what is in the database, but not let them change or destroy data. Do I need to create some other database in-between users & the original database? Users can't program & want access to all data.management doesn't want to create a replication of the database. They want to let users have access through MS Word or Access. What could you advise me?

I am going to give user rights for an external user to connect to my SQL Server via Client Network Utility.
Atlough I have given user permissions to only access one database and not the whole list, how do I make sure that they cannot see all the other databases on my SQL Server?
I have 20 instances of databases on my SQL Server and ideally I would like to give 20 different people access - but each of them when they enter my SQL Server, should not even know that the other databases exist.
Thanks.

If I wanted to make a report that shows different fields, one being cost, but I only wanted certain people to see cost based on their AD groups, is there a way to hide this information?
Basically, domain/user1 belongs to AD purchasing group purchasing, he can see item, description and cost, where domain/user2 belongs to sales so he can only see item and description?

I have a client who would like to access his database via SQL Server Management Studio. I created a login for him. This login has access only to his database on the server (I set this up using the user mapping), the Securables has Connect to SQL checked (otherwise he won't see his database). When I test this login, he is able to see all the other databases on the server, though when he clicks on the ones he doesn't have access to, it will tell him that he can't access that database. He can access his database alright. My question is, can I hide all the other databases from him, and only display that only database he has access to? I have tried many different ways, I can't seem to be able to do so.

hi, please anybody help me with this....
i need to have a user account with the following requirements:
a. can create/alter/drop tables/views that is created by this user;
b. can read/update/delete records from tables created by this user
c. can read/add records to tables created by other user
d. can create/edit/execute stored procedures
is this possible? how can i do this? how can i allow a user to create new objects or alter objects owned by him at the same time prevent him from dropping objects created by other user?
how can i give a user full access to objects that he created and limit his access rights like dropping objects, deleting records or updating records from tables that is not created by him?
can i do these thru enterprise manager or do i have to run some scripts in order for these to happen? if so, can somebody help me with the scripts or links that i can use for references?
thanks a lot! hope you can help me with these...
thanks a lot...

Writing to tables created by regular users on MSSQL2005
I have users creating tables through an application, I gave them ddl_admin, datareader, datawriter. They can create tables but cannot insert/update data (to their own tables), I cannot insert data either using Access or any other application to those tables created by them (under dbo schema) Is there something I am missing with permissions? Thank you very much

Listed below are some basic info about my application.
.net 2.0 web application
SQL 2000 database
Single sign-on. Windows Authentication with impersonate set to true in web.config:
<authentication mode="Windows"/>
<identity impersonate="true"/>
Connection String in web.config: <add name="conn" connectionString="Data Source=MyRemoteSeverName;Initial Catalog=MyDBName;Integrated Security=SSPI; " providerName="System.Data.SqlClient;"/>
The problem I'm having now is that any users that are not in the sysadmin server role can't read any table. Say if I have 2 users:
Domain1User1 ( in db_datareader and db_datawriter Database Role, no sever role assigned)
Domain1User2 ( in db_datareader and db_datawriter Database Role, sysadmin Server Role)
Here is what's expected to happen if everything goes well.
A list of customers ( first name, last name, age, etc) in a gridview should show up after login.
After both users logged in, Domain1User1 received an exception message of "Object reference not set to an instance of an object".
Domain1User2, however, was able to see the list.
I checked SQL Server Logs, and found 2 items:
Login succeeded for user 'Domain1User1' ... Connection TRUSTED
Login succeeded for user 'Domain1User2' ... Connection TRUSTED.
Based on the log file, it appears that both users had good connections to the database. Then why is it that User1, which is not in sysadmin Server Role, was not allowed to make a query?
Now if I assign sysadmin Server Role to Domain1User1 as well, the User1 will be able to see the list without seeing the exception.
Can someone shed some light for me please ?

Hi,I have a web app, that runs fine, except for one particular section that uses a class called by an event in the code behind. The class resides as a dll in the bin folder. We had no problems during testing, when only one user was running this dll. Problems soon occurred when multiple users tried running it. We have ensured after each read the reader is closed. Though all users are using the same connection string. Could it be a connection pool problem, with the connection being overwritten during execution? Should i edit it according to the users logon?I am really at a loss for ideas, and I don't mind admitting I am a bit out of my depth with this one!! Any ideas/suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I have a NT Group of users that need to connect to MSSQL db using integrated auth and run a stored proc. I have got this concept to work for individual windows users but not a group.
Does anyone have any ideas?
(Win XP, MSSQL 2000 SP3, Windows Group = "SQLUsers", member is "User2")
--- TSQL ---
USE master
GO
sp_grantlogin 'pcSQLUsers'
GO
sp_defaultdb 'pcSQLUsers', 'theDB'
GO
USE theDB
GO
sp_grantdbaccess 'pcSQLUsers', 'SQLUsers'
GO
GRANT EXECUTE ON [dbo].[uspThing] TO SQLUsers
GO
-- Trying to connect with OSQL.EXE:
> osql -d theDB -E
Login failed for user 'pcUser2'.
BUT.....
runing it for the individual user:
---TSQL
USE master
GO
sp_grantlogin 'pcUser2'
GO
sp_defaultdb 'pcUser2', 'theDB'
GO
USE theDB
GO
sp_grantdbaccess 'pcUser2', 'SQLUsers'
GO
GRANT EXECUTE ON [dbo].[uspThing] TO SQLUsers
GO
---- now trying to connect with OSQL.EXE as User2:
>osql -d theDB -E
1> exec uspThing
2> go
3> data....
all is fine......
I can't use the user method - to much admin... any ideas!?

I have a very long transaction that runs on the same database thatother users need to use for existing data. I don't care if they seedata from the transaction before it is done and am only using thetransaction because I need a way to roll it back if any errors happenduring the transaction. Unfortunately all tables affected in the longrunning transaction are completely locked and nobody else can accessany of the affected tables while it is running. I am using thetransaction isolation level of read uncommitted, which from my limitedunderstanding of isolation levels is the least strict. What can I do toprevent this from happening?Below is the output from sp_who2 and sp_lock while the process isrunning and another process is being blocked by it.SPID Status LoginHostName BlkBy DBName Command CPUTimeDiskIO LastBatch ProgramName SPID----- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---------- ----------------- ---------------- ------- ------ ------------------------------------------ -----1 BACKGROUND sa. . I've recently installed MSQL Server 7.0 Standart Version and every time I create a new database, system tables are created and are visible also. That means, I instantely get 18 tables, 20 views, 18 stored procedures and so on. Can I hide them??? I mean, my tables are all mixed with the system tables. If I can hide all the system tables and views and so on please tell me! Thanks.

But there is one flaw - Is there any way of hiding an empyt table?
I want to hide all tables that are not filled with data. But wich one is empty differs from the entered parameter.

My company is new to MDS. I am trying to set an attritube in an entity to read only so the users can't change the value in that field. When I did that, the whole model disappeared. I thought I had deleted it by accident so I created a test model and tried to do the same. The test model disappeared. This time, before saving the new settings I took a snapshot. After saving I took another snapshot. You can see that the whole model is gone (zz_RN_Permissions_Test). I tried every other coworker with admin rights and nobody shows it on the Models list. The behavior on the Excel add-in is correct. I can't change any values on that column. But I need to keep the models available.
See before and after snapshots below.

I have a Login that I setup in SQL Server 2005. The only database roles given to the login are db_datareader and public. On SQL 2000 these permissions are sufficient to allow me to setup a read only ODBC connection using this login and creating an import table in Access. When using the login in SQL 2005 and creating an import table, I am able to edit the underlying data, something I am not able to do with a SQL 2000 ODBC connection. Is there something in SQL 2005 that I am unaware of that would allow this login to modify (update) the table?

Newbee question: I am trying to use some of the "101" samples in VS 2005 with SQL Server 2005. These samples use SQL server express MDF files.
The error is: "... you cannont open a database that is incompatible with this version of sqlservr.ext. You must re-create the database."
Do I need to install SQL server express? What are the issues with installing express when I am already running SQL Server 2005?
How do I update or "re-create" the express MDF database file in SQL Server 2005?
Thanks!

Can anyone tell me why I am getting this error when I try to select * from a table through a newly created synonym? I have admin rights to both db, but they are on separate servers.
<Error>
OLE DB provider "SQLNCLI" for linked server "srvDEV" returned message "Communication link failure".
Msg 10054, Level 16, State 1, Line 0
TCP Provider: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.
Msg 18456, Level 14, State 1, Line 0
Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITYANONYMOUS LOGON'.
</error>
<code>
CREATE SYNONYM ARContractTerms_syn FOR srvDEV.EricsAdeptCastle.dbo.tblARContractTerms
SELECT * FROM ARContractTerms_syn
</code>
Am I running into schema problems?
Thanks all

Is there any setting to indicate Unicode data to handle, so that no need to exclusively use Unicode data types ( ex nvarchar ).
I need to execute both Unicode and non Unicode SQL statements with in one environment. I don't want to create seperate database again.
Please let me know if any one had approached on SQL server this way. I am looking the way Oracle provides where you don€™t need to declare the data type of the column as Unicode type in table definition but can indicate when running a query to manipulate that field as Unicode field.
Thank youSunil

I am restoring a production copy of db XYZ to the development server db XYZ. I want to retain the original users on the development server for db XYZ. How do I create a script that will reset the users on the development server with the same permissions and access they had before the production copy was restored on development? I have searched and searched and cannot find the answer. I can use a third party tool - Embarcadero - to script out the create and update stmts but it is not 100% correct. I end up having to do alot of manual work.
any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
