Showing Friendly Values In The GUI

Jul 20, 2005

I am new to SQL server and I am looking for the best practiceregarding the following:The GUI for the database I am creating has a number of questions like:A. Where are you currently living?1) In my own home2) In the home of a family member3) In a shelter4) On the streetHowever, for speed of data entry, the GUI (it's a web front-end,ASP/VBScript) accepts the number only. Futhermore the database onlystores the number entered. So for example for the above question, when the user is doing the dataentry, they would just enter a 1, 2, 3, or 4.However, when viewing the data, the end user wants to see the textthat corresponds to the number. So for example, if the user entered"3" for the above question, when they are viewing the data in the GUI(not to make edits, just viewing), they want to see "(3) In ashelter".My question is how best to display these friendly values?Should I do all the conversions in a stored procedure? If so, whatwould be the best way to do that? I tried something like this:SELECT Current_living =CASE Current_livingWHEN 1 THEN '(1) In my own home with my partner'WHEN 2 THEN '(2) In the home of a family member'ELSE NULLENDFROM tbl_DemographicInfo WHERE ClientID = @ClientIDbut I can't figure out how to do this for multiple fields.ALSO, I'm not sure if burying this stuff in a stored proc is the wayto go, because if the client wants a slight change to the friendlyname I have to get into the SP and change it. Seems like there mustbe a better way.I can also do this in the ASP code, but that also doesn't seem likethe best practice.I can have a lookup table, but again, where do I do the conversion? In an SP? With a view?Again, I'm looking for the best practice here. I know some ways Icould do it (like in the ASP), but I want to do it efficiently andcorrectly.Any help/comments are greatly appreciated.thanks in advance,Jon LaRosajlarosa at alumni dot brown dot edu

Showing Null Values From ON Inner Join Sproc CLAUSE

Jul 19, 2006

Hi all
My query has some inner joins to some tables. And problem is when any ON clause get null as value, the correspondent record is not displayed.
SELECTTableA.A, TableB.AFROM TableAINNER JOIN TableB ON TableA.A = TableB.A
What I did try:
SELECTTableA.A, TableB.AFROM TableAINNER JOIN TableB ON TableA.A = TableB.A OR TableA.A IS NULL
(but It generates redundant values from TableB)
I need to show all values even that value from Tablea is null
Thank a lot for any help

Database Stored Procedures Not Showing Up In Database View

Jan 31, 2008

Hi I have an application that I have started to develop.  I have successfully set the connection to open the SQL Server database that I created.  When I first started on the program, I was able to create Table Adapters by dragging the tables or stored procedures onto the DataSet work surface and going through the configuration process.  At one point, however, I stopped being able to see any of my stored procedures in the database view although they are there because when I go to create a new table adapter, I am able to right click and add the new adapter and find the stored procedure in the wizard. Is there any way I can reset this so that my stored procedures are visible again.  I have tried refreshing to no avail - and I think this is creating problems in other parts of the application.Any help appreciate.Roger

I attached my database to SQL 2005 but it's showing up as read-only for some reason. I've attached this before just fine in another instance of the Vista OS. Why would it attach differently this time compared to all other times and show read only?

The .mdb and .ldf files are not read only if you right-click and check out their properties.

Integration Services :: Empty String Is Showing As NULL Value In Database?

Oct 8, 2015

In my source table, I have columns FirstName and LastName, both of datatype nvarchar. In my dataflow, I created two new derived columns mapped to these two columns. When pushing data to the source, I noticed that the FirstName column had a value of NULL while LastName was just an empty string (for rows that did not have any value).

My question is, why my source table column FirstName is showing a NULL value when the derived column datatype is string and the source is string? It should just be showing an empty string right?

Compare Incoming Input File Row Values With Database Row Values In SSIS

Jan 23, 2008

Hi All,

I receive the input file with some 100 columns and some 20k+ rows and I want to check the incoming input row is existed in the database or not based on 2 key columns. If the row is existed then I need to check all the columns (nearly 100 columns) values in input and the database are equal or not. If both are equal I need to treat them seperately if not there is a seperate logic. How Can I do that check for each row and for each column?

Basically the algorithm is like this, if the input file row is not existed in the database then treat that as new row else if the input row is existed in the database then check all the columns are equal or not. If all the columns are equal then treat that as existing row and do nothing else if some columns are not equal then treat this row seperately.

I found some thing to achieve the above thing.
1. Take the input row and check in the database.
2. If the row is not found in the database then treat it as new row.
3. If row is found in the database then
a) Take the source row and prepare a concatenated string for all the columns
b) Take the database row and prepare a concatenated string for all the columns
c) Find out the hash code for the 2 strings and then compare hash codes for equal.

The disadvantage of this is running a loop 2*m*n times where m is the number of rows and n is the number of columns. It should be done 2 times for input file row and database row.

Can anybody suggest a good method to do this?

What does the function "GetHashCode" for InputBuffer in method "Public Overrides Sub Input0_ProcessInputRow(ByVal Row As Input0Buffer)" will do?
Will it generates hash code based on all the columns values?

Pls clarify.

Regards
Venkat.

SQL 2012 :: Log Shipping - Secondary Database Path Showing Wrong Location?

Mar 17, 2014

I've configured log shipping to use for DR purposes. I'm concerned that the physical location of the secondary is mis-reported by SQL Server Management Studio.

Viewing the secondary location (with Studio DB_name Properties Files) shows the path of the primary DB (I expected it to show the path of the secondary).

This SQL command shows the correct/actual paths of both primary and secondary DB's when run on their host servers.

SELECT name, physical_name AS CurrentLocation, state_desc FROM sys.master_files

Is this just cosmetic?

Here is an Example of how the Studio shows the incorrect path for the secondary.

Example:

(Primary) servername=prodSrv, DBname=aquaDB, Actual_Path=G:aquaDB, SQL-studio-Properties-Path=G:AquaDB, sys.master_files Path=G:AquaDB,

Log shipped to

(Secondary / Read Only) servername=DRSrv, DBname=aquaDB, Actual Path=F:aquaDR, SQL-studio-Properties-Path=G:AquaDB(WRONG), sys.master_files Path=F:aquaDR

Database Diagrams : Showing Relations Column To Column

Dec 19, 2005

Hi to all,
As I am going to deal with a huge number of database tables, I thought that drawing their diagrams will be the most professional way of keeping track of what I am doing. So In Enterprise Manager using the Wizard I made it to be drawn nicely.

But I have a problem now. I see that the relations defined among the tables are represented correctly but the line connecting the two table is drawn randomly. I mean the starting point of the line doesnt start from the column having the primary key and doesnt end near to the column having the foreign key. Viewing my diagram I want to see the lines to start and end showing the 2 related key columns.
Is there a way to accomplish this like setting an option, clicking somewhere or should I try to drag the lines to manually?
Thanks in advance

Searching For Values Within A Database?

Oct 2, 2014

I've been given read access to a database and I also am looking at a GUI which draws data from the database. I am trying to map the results I see from the GUI to find the columns that the data is in... So.. big database, takes a long time to search the entire thing so I try to narrow it down by the following:

Code:
select * from information_schema.columns where table_schema = 'db19' and table_catalog = 'masterdb' and
table_name in(select table_name from information_schema.tables where table_type = 'base table' and table_catalog = 'masterdb' and table_schema = 'db19' and data_type in ('text' and 'varchar'))

This essentially gives me a list of tables and columns whos data type is either text or varchar. Once I have this list... I then run the following on each:

Code:
select top 1 [col_name] from [table_name] where [col_name] like ' (here is the value I want to search) '

So this runs through each table, looking to see if a value exists and if so, prints the result.

I am then left with a much much smaller list that I can manually look through and find the one I am looking to specifically find.

Is it possible to do this running only one query... where the output gives me all the columns in with a specific data type that contain a value I enter Anything else to make this more efficient

I am aware that there are data mining programs that could probably do this however I only have read access on the database which often causes a problem. The application I am using is "Aqua Data Studio" ....

Not A Number Values In The Database

Jul 28, 2007

Our application has a table, which is populated via ADO.Net from C# with data originating from a C++ COM call. Today I encountered an entry that is C++ code for an undefined value: -1.#IND stored in the database. However, I could only discover what was stored in the table by Casting the value to a varchar -- simply selecting returned an error.

Is this expected behavior or a bug? It does not seem correct that SQL Server should store a value that cannot be displayed. In essence, either the value should not be allowed in the table because it violated the domain or SQL Server ought to have a way to display it with a Select *.

As fas as our application is concerned, we will be masking these values -- initially by ignoring them in the queries and eventually the loading program will convert to null.
