Sp_OA* And Mail Issues After SP2 Upgrade
Aug 20, 2007
i have sql2005 enterprise edition 64 bit edition and immediately after applying service pack 2 we are encountering few errors which are affecting our production very much
1. there is a user defined function which in turn calls sp_OA ....(ole automation procedures - this is enabled in the configuration manager) and it is working fine ....however over a period of time after 1-2 hours the functions returns unexpected values,
and when you restart sql server, the function returns normal values as expected
does service pack 2 upgrade in any way affect sp_OA extended system procedures..
2.i am getting this error contimously in my sql server log
Message
The activated proc [dbo].[sp_sysmail_activate] running on queue msdb.dbo.ExternalMailQueue output the following: 'The service queue "ExternalMailQueue" is currently disabled.'
database mail stops workign after some time and when you restart sql server it starts working
can somebody throw some light on this as it is very badly affecting my production
thanks in advance

Hello, I upgraded to Beta 3 and now mail isn`t working(I hate mail!) I found 2 error messages. One when trying to add an operators email id and the other when I try to "test" mail under server properties.
- Unable to start a mail session on the server with this mail profile.
- no mail profile defined.
The account that I am using is used for all our SQL Servers and was working on this server on 6.5 before the upgrade. I have checked the new SQLServerAgent service and it`s using the correct account.
Any help would be appreciated.
And to all you that are off for a long Labor Day weekend...I`m jealous!

Upgraded SQL Server 2005 x64 to Service Pack 1 expressly for the purpose of enabling Database Mail from SQL Job, which was a known bug that was listed as fixed in this Service Pack. It still does not work; in fact after installing SP1 on an x86 SQL Server Standard, Database Mail does not work from there now either, although it did prior to the upgrade! I am using Integrated Security.
Error message received: The job succeeded. The Job was invoked by User <name>. The last step to run was step 1 (Select). NOTE: Failed to notify 'Mike Schelstrate' via email.
Message in Error Log: [264] An attempt was made to send an email when no email session has been established.
Send test Email does work on both Servers.
Here is another Error message I found in the SQL Error Logs: [298] SQLServer Error: 2812, Could not find stored procedure 'msdb.dbo.xp_sqlagent_notify'. [SQLSTATE 42000] (DisableAgentXPs). Looks like this may be the root of the problem because it does not exist, I checked. How do I obtain this missing extended stored procedure?

I'm faced with a situation where I will need to calculate a column fora resultset by calling a component written as a VB6 DLL, passingparameters from the resultset to the component and setting (orupdating) a column with the result. I thought that perhaps the bestway out would be to create a UDF that passes the parameters to the VBcomponent using the sp_oa* OLE stored procs. For a test, I created an ActiveX DLL in VB6 (TestDLL) with someproperties and methods. I then created a function that creates theobject, sets the required properties and returns a result. I usesp_oaDestroy at the end of the function to remove the objectreference. The function seems to work surprisingly well except for asmall problem; when I use the function to calculate a column for aresultset with more that one row, the DLL appears to stay locked up("the file is being used by another person or program"). This leavesme with the impression that the object reference is not beingdestroyed. I have to stop/restart the SQL Server in order to free theDLL.Question:Is the UDF approach the best way? I don't like the idea of creatingand destroying the object at every pass which is what the UDF does.As an alternative, I suppose that I could have a single SP where Icreate the OLE object once, loop through the result set with a cursorand do my processing/updating, then close the OLE object. I must saythat I'm not too fond of that approach either. Thanks for your help,Bill E.Hollywood, FL(code is below)___________________________--Test the functionCreate Table #TestTable(Field1 int)INSERT INTO #TestTable VALUES (1)INSERT INTO #TestTable VALUES (2)SELECT Field1, dbo.fnTest(Field1,4) AS CalcColFROM #TestTableDrop Table #TestTable___________________________CREATE FUNCTION dbo.fnTest/*This function calls a VB DLL*/(--input variables@intValue1 smallint,@intValue2 smallint)RETURNS integerASBEGIN--Define the return variable and the counterDeclare @intReturnValue smallintSet @intReturnValue=0--Define other variablesDeclare @intObject intDeclare @intResult intDeclare @intError intSet @intError=0If @intError = 0exec @intError=sp_oaCreate 'TestDLL.Convert', @intObject OUTPUTIf @intError = 0exec @intError = sp_OASetProperty @intObject,'Input1', @intValue1If @intError = 0exec @intError = sp_OASetProperty @intObject,'Input2', @intValue2If @intError = 0exec @intError = sp_oamethod @intObject, 'Multiply'If @intError = 0exec @intError = sp_oagetproperty @intObject,'Output',@intReturnValue OutputIf @intError = 0exec @intError = sp_oadestroy @intObjectRETURN @intReturnValueEND

Okay, so here's my dilemma: I'm trying to figure out a way I can get a list of drives, users, groups, etc. from computers on the network. There are a couple of caveats:
1) This has to be done entirely using T-SQL. There can be no external components that need to be installed.
2) xp_cmdshell can NOT be used, both for security reasons and because some of the computers being polled do not have SQL Server installed.
I would like to use the sp_OA* stored procedures. So far I have been able to connect to a remote server and find the running state of SQL Server; however, when it comes to enumerating collections I'm kinda lost.
This has also been posted in the MS-SQL general forum.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I am using nt4.0 sp5 with sql7.0 sp3 and exchange client.
Does anyone know how to keep xp_sendamil form putting a copy of the mail message in the sent mail folder or an automated process for deleting all mail in the sent folder? As it stands now I must manually delete all messages from the sent mail folder on a daily basis.
Thanks,

Hi Everyone,
Hopefully someone out there will have an idea as this is driving me nuts.
I've setup a task to email on success/failure and keep receiving the following message when executed:
Progress: The SendMail task is initiated. - 0 percent complete
[Send Mail Task] Error: An error occurred with the following error message: "Failure sending mail.".
Progress: The SendMail task is completed. - 100 percent complete
Task Send Mail Task failed
When I configure Outlook Express on the same machine with the same settings it works.
On the SMTP Connection Manager I have left the default name, tested with both an IP address and Server Name, and no authentication or SSL.
On the Send Mail Task, it uses the above connection. The To: , From: , Subject fields are populated. Message SourceType is DirectInput, MessageSource is Test, Priority is Normal and no attachments or expressions etc.
Nothing useful is logged in the Event Viewer even with full logging turned on.
Any suggestions appreciated,
Thanks.

Hello,
The Database Mail feature is already enabled on the server, also I have a mail account on the other server.
The problem I faced is that I need to send mail from my SQL Server using a created email account on the other server. How should I configure my email to do that ?
Should I use a sysmail_add_account procedure to enable account, also set profile and profile account ? Does this way creates server mail account that is binded with other email account?
The mail should be sent from my SQL Server.
Thank You.

I keep getting a generic "Error Sending Mail" error. For testing purposes I am just trying to send using my own email account. What goes in the SMTP Server box in the connection manager? I have tried:
A - the exchange server address (SOMETHING.us.company.com)
B - The SMTP properties I see when I look at the properties of my email address: (my.name@abcd.efgh.company.com)
C - Just the end portion of the SMTP properties: (abcd.efgh.company.com)
D - My email address (my.name@company.com)
I don't know what to enter, or what is giving me such a generic error message.

I know you can specify additional recipients in the To column by sepperating them with a semicolon. But whats the easiest way to send to several users, when the email address must be retrieved from a table with a query like this:
select email from problem_subscribers
where project = 'project1'
and statusmail = 'OnError'
So when the eventhandler gets an OnError i want the mail task to be sent to each problemsubscriber.

Hi every body
I want to send a simple mail using DATABASE MAIL feature in SQL SERVER 2005.
I've defined a public profile.
I've enabled Database Mail stored procedures through the Surface Area Configuration .
but I can't send a mail with sp_send_dbmail stored procedure in 'msdb' database .
when I execute sp_send_dbmail in the Managment Studio the message is
"Mail queued" but the mail is not sent.
Could it be related to Service Broker?Because the Surface Area Configuration indicates:'this inctance does not have a Service Broker endpoint'.If so, how should I make an endpoint?
here is the log file after executing sp_send_dbmail:
1) "DatabaseMail process is started"
2) "The mail could not be sent to the recipients because of the mail server failure. (Sending Mail using Account 2 (2007-03-08T00:49:29). Exception Message: Could not connect to mail server. (No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it)."
The DatabaseMail90.exe is triggred ,so the mail is transfered to the mail queue but DatabaseMail90.exe couldn't give the mail to SMTP server. The promlem is what should I do to make DatabaseMail90.exe able to connect to the server?
please help me.

I had a very recent problem where an excess number of mail records were queued. I ran sysmail_delete_mailitems_sp and deleted them from the InternalMailQueue, but it looks like they still exist in the ExternalMailQueue as I keep getting messages in the log similar to "Mail Id 2277459 has been deleted from sysmail_mailitems table. This mail will not be sent". The MailItem_Id keeps incrementing so it looks like it's working its way through. The problem is we can't use it to sent current mail until it gets through about another 3 million records.
If there is some way to delete those records from the External Mail Queue or fast-forward the system to the current records that would be very helpful. Any ideas?

Greetings,
I have a client whose DBA upgraded their SQL 2000 database to SQL 2005. They still have it running in 8.0 compatibility mode, for various reasons, and would like me to help them develop a migration strategy to get them to full 9.0 compatibility.
My question is: can I run the Upgrade Advisor on a SQL 2005 engine database running in 8.0 compatibility mode and get anything useful? I already know there will be some issues with existing DTS packages but it would be nice to catch any other issues in advance.
I know that the Upgrade Advisor was run before the upgrade took place but to my knowledge the report was not saved and none of the recommendations were followed.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
Lon

Hello Everyone,
I am trying to configure SQL MAIL and SQL SERVER AGENT MAIL feature of SQL SERVER 2000 with Lotus Domino server (Not Microsoft Exchange). Every thing goes fine and it works also. Problem starts when I try to restart SQL Agent Service. It hangs and the status of service remain 'starting'...
Also the size of the sqlagent service process goes upto 12MB. I don't understand why? Can any one help me in solving this problem.
I am using Windows 2000 Advanced Server and SQL Server 2000 with SP3. Domino client is R5.0.5 and Outlook 2000.

Dear MSSQL Collegues;
I set up SQL mail to send mail using MS Mail Server off of a separate server. The mail works and the server does mail out
with the difference that I must physically click on the "check mail" for MS Messenger to send the mail out to the mail server.
I thought about installing MS Exchange (The one I have running on NT workstation) but I can not find the installation kit
for Exchange anywhere. I tried Microsoft but I can not find it. Is there a trick to installing Exchange out of the cd rom for
NT 4.0? Or is there a setting in Messenger that I have to set for it to send mail by itself?
I need help Please.
Thank you for your help
