Hi,
We have a new failover cluster (Windows 2003 SP1, Microsoft SQL 2000 SP4) with each node of the cluster hosting 7 SQL Server instances in a 2-node active-active configuration connected to a SAN. We are planning to move some SQL Server Instances(from existing stand-alone servers) into this Cluster. Any insight into the process of moving SQL Servers into the cluster would be highly appreciated.

I am trying to install multi instances on my server cluster 2003 R2 Sp2. Because of the compatibility issues with my services I need to install both SQL 2000 and 2005. With 2000 I can easily specify the instance and servername. The server name can be the same, but the instance has to be different. Is this true for 2005? I have found so far that for every new instance that you create that you need to have a different virtual server name. How can you utilize the same virtual name and have multi insances
servername$instance1
servername$instance2
and so on

We have an x86 sql 2000 server with 4GB of RAM, a quadcore Xeon, a RAID 5 drive C, and its utilization is generally low. Typical perfmon counters: CPU < 5%; available Mbytes, 1800; typical disk time 5-10 %; Committed bytes in use < 25%, pagessec near 0.0.
For various reasons I need to install a sql 2005 instance on the same box and both instances will be up and running at the same time.
How, using Perfmon (?), can I determine the max amount of memory to assign to each instance? (It is my understanding that I definitiely need to limit the amount of RAM used by each instance.)
TIA,

Hi all

I am trying to install SQL2K5 on my machine where I already have SQL2K installed.
The best I have managed to achieve is to get SQL2K5 EM looking at my SQL2K databases.
Do I need to uninstall SQL2K before installing SQL2K?
Depending on what combo of SQL I have installed my options on SQL2K install vary.
I am a bit lost at this point.
Anyone know a link to a good white paper type doc that guides me through an install on the same machine.
Thanks In Advance

We currently have multiple instances of MS Sql 2000 and MS SQL 2005 installed on servers. When at other locations that uses different subnets only the default instance is available, published, broadcasted, selectable.
We have TCPIP and name pipes enabled for all instances. This seems to be a common problem for all locations.
Hi
We are planning to upgrade the SQL Server in our production environment from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005. This is a 4 Node cluster environment with 3 Databases on 3 Virtual instances. The main requirement is to achieve this with no/minimal downtime.
Could you please suggest or direct me to any documentation for the best practices used to upgrade such an environment?
Thanks
Priyanka
I had a server with SQL Server 7.0
I installed a named instance of SQL Server 2000 and then i passed all my DB
of the 7.0 instance to the 2000 instance.
Then i removed the 7.0 instance, that was the default instance.
So at the moment there is only the 2000 version, but it isn't the default
instance
Can the 2000 instance become the default instance? (So that clients can
connect to it simply through computer name, and not creating an alias)
thanks

Can the SQL 2005 install upgrade from SQL 2000 handle multiple instances?

Hi,
We have (after several weeks of testing in all kind of environments) send out a new version of our application to several of our customers. Within days problems where drippin in; After looking for the problem on various customer situations we found a problem which I think is rather disturbing and very odd. I'll describe the situation, on which we finally managed to recreate the problem, here.
In my problem I use the following configuration:
Windows 2003 (standard edition) AD network with 2 domain controllers, multiple Windows XP workstations, some without SQL instances, some with SQL 2000 instances, some with SQL 2005 instances and even one with SQL 7 running.
All run a 32 bit OS.
Tools to reproduce:
ListSQLSvr application (found on SQLDev.net) to enumerate the instances.
Problem description:
--------------------------------------------------
I am running the machine called DEV001, which has SQL 2000 (instancename DRUMIS) and SQL 7.0 (has no instancename so this is the root instance) installed.
In any 'normal' situation all the runnings SQL instances are visible on the network like this:
Code Block
C:>listsqlsvr -X
(local);Clustered:No;Version:7.00.623
ADM002DRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
DEV001DRUMIS
DEV001DRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
DEV002DRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
DEV002EXPRESS;Clustered:No;Version:9.00.3042.00
DEV002EXPRESS
INSADBACKOFFICEDRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
INSADBACKOFFICEEXACT;Clustered:No;Version:9.00.3042.00
INSADOFFICEWSUS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
SUP001DRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
When I turn the SQL 2005 Browser service off on the machine called DEV002 the list looks like:
Code Block
C:>listsqlsvr -X
(local);Clustered:No;Version:7.00.623
ADM002DRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
DEV001DRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
DEV001DRUMIS
DEV002
DEV002EXPRESS
DEV004DRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:9.00.3042.00
INSADBACKOFFICEDRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
INSADBACKOFFICEEXACT;Clustered:No;Version:9.00.3042.00
INSADOFFICEWSUS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
SUP001DRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
Notice that the browser service might be off on DEV002, you can still see the EXPRESS instance and a new root instance has appeared (though it doesn't exist!)??
After restarting the Browser service all is OK again.
When I turn on Hide Server in the SQL 2000 TCP/IP properties (or turn it on in the registry [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftMicrosoft SQL ServerDRUMISMSSQLServerSuperSocketNetLibTcp] "TcpHideFlag"=dword:00000001) on the DEV002 computer something real scary is happening..
The list looks as follows:
Code Block
C:listsqlsvr -X
(local)
ADM002
DEV001
DEV002
DEV004
INSADBACKOFFICE
INSADOFFICE
SUP001
When someone has entered a database (for example the backoffice database on INSADBACKOFFICEEXACT) the list looks as follows (for a short moment; 5 secs or so):
Code Block
C:listsqlsvr -X
(local)
ADM002
DEV001
DEV002
DEV004
INSADBACKOFFICEDEVELOP;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
INSADBACKOFFICEDRUMIS;Clustered:No;Version:8.00.194
INSADBACKOFFICEEXACT;Clustered:No;Version:9.00.3042.00
INSADOFFICE
SUP001
Notice now that ALL instances are gone and no extended information is available. In the Query Analyser and in the SQL Management Studio when browsing you'll see this as well!
When someone is accessing a database instance it appears for a few seconds again.
Since our installation and applications rely on selecting a existing instance it will fail in the above situations (or at least not showing all available instances).
In my opinion this is a bug somewhere!
Note that even when the SQL Services are stopped on DEV002 (leaving the Browser service running) it still seems to block out ALL instance on the ENTIRE network!
I don't mind that one INSTANCE or even the entire MACHINE is hidden from the network, but ALL instances on ALL machines??
And the SQL Browser issue also worries me a bit since it does not stop the possibily to browse the SQL instances; it removes the SQL2000 instances but adds a root instance which doesn't even exist! Also the extended info is stripped.
Can anyone help me solve this/advise?
Also mind that in any situation there might run a lot of computers with a lot of SQL instances and I cannot tell our customers to find which machine has the SQL TCP/IP properties set to Hide...
It even seems that in some situations SBS 2003 does the hiding automatically on Install? And if so, when and why?

We're upgrading a SQL Server 2000 cluster (Active/Passive) running on Windows 2000 Server to a SQL Server 2005 Cluster running on Windows Server 2003. We can't purchase new hardware and we have no spare hardware. We also need to move from Windows 2000 Server to Windows 2003 Server at the same time. We want to keep downtime to a bare minimum.
What we were thinking was the following steps... Anyone try this?
1. Break the link between the servers.
2. Install a fresh copy of windows 2003 server on one side along with SQL Server 2005. While this step is running, the active node would still be live on Windows 2000 Server and SQL Server 2000 serving our customers.
3. Restore a copy of a backup from the active production side to the node we're upgrading and at that point we would bring the active node down, switching the active node to be the newly upgraded server.
4. As a final step, the old active node would now have the link to it broken, we would install a fresh copy of windows 2003 server on it and sql server 2005. At this point we would bring it back into the cluster and the cluster would be complete again.
Thoughts?
Friends -
Need your help and guidence for doing upgrading SQL Server 2000 Cluster to SQL Server 2005 Cluster.
Let me explain my current environment.
1. Currently SQL Server 2000 Cluster environment is running on Windows 2000 Server we need to upgrade this to SQL Server 2005 on Windows 2003 Server. >>> Production environment.
My Plans:
1. On Testing Environment Install SQL Server 2000 cluster on Windows 2003 Server and do a restore of databases from the produciton environment.
2. Upgrade In-Place from SQL Server 2000 Cluster to SQL Server 2005 Cluster.
My doubts
1. Can i install SQL Server 2000 Cluster on Windows 2003 Server. Is it possible or not.
Please advise me and correct my steps.
Cheers

We wish to upgrade our hardware of two sql boxes onto a single cluster. One of our databases will not run on sql 2005 and so I wanted to know if it is possible to run an instance of sql2000 and an instance of sql 2005 on the same cluster.
This is possible or would it cause as a lot of problems?
Good Morning!
I am beginning the process of moving SQL 2000 databases to SQL 2005 cluster.
Has anyone already did this and is there anything I should know?
We plan on leaving the SQL 2000 database up during this process and granting read only at the time.
I am nervous about this as this is a high profile database in our dept.
I don't even know if I know where to begin!
Any suggestions are truely welcome!
Thanks,
/P
I an involved in a project that will have five sql server instances on an NT cluster.
I cannot find anywhere on Technet info on what happens when a single instance fails. Do they all have to fail over or just the failed instance. This is important so that we get the disk layout correct.
Can anybody help ? or point me to any docs on this.
I have a need to add a second Sql instance to an existing cluster. However I read in this article http://www.sql-server-performance.com/articles/clustering/clustering_best_practices_p1.aspx
that this is not recommended. Does anyone know why this is or what problems I may encounter?
Its is running Sql 2005 on a 64 bit windows Server 2003.

I have a Cluster environment that has SQL 2000 Enterprise installed. I would like to install SQL 2005 Enterprise as well. What should I watch out for. Do I need to specify a named instance for the 05 install, setup is giving me the option and does see the 2000 instance? Is there a document that walks through this installation?

Hello all: looking for some general advice on proper approach. looking to move databases off of a clustered instance to a new (non-clustered) server.
Got several issues i'd like some advice on.
1. This is an OLTP instance that's been around for a while & it's pretty well encrusted with apps & processes that attach to it. Therefore it would be a very good thing if we didn't need to change the connection information in several hundred places after the move.
I've tested one approach to this that seems to work: moved the instance to a server which has the same name as the cluster resource associated with the clustered instance and an instance that has the same name as the clustered instance.
For example: cluster install is aiproddbproduction, moved it to a box called aiproddb with a named instance called "production". There's a bunch of tedious network stuff that has to be done to make this work (binding an IP address to the MAC address of the new box and some murky DHCP reservation fiddling), but after the network crew got done cursing me it did finally work.
Does this seem like a reasonable approach?
2. What's the best way to transfer security info to the new instance? I used the transfer Logins DTS widget but had some problems with it not being able to find some groups in AD.
3. what's the best way to transfer DTS packages?
4. is it necessary for the new instance to be at the same patch level as the old instance? the old clustered instance is still at SP3 and i threw the latest SP4 on the new location. good/bad/indifferent?
5. i was planning on taking a full backup & restoring it to the new machine. Is there a better way? Is the wizard for copying databases a good thing?
Those are these issues i'm aware of and have given some thought to. There are probably things about this i haven't considered and would appreciate some word on.
thanks,
Garth
We have 5 instances on our clients old machine with SQL 2005, now they want us to move on cluster environment with SQL 2012.
Once I have installed and configured SQL cluster with single instance, but how to install SQL Cluster environment for Multiple instances.
Should I install all the instances first and than have to configure cluster ?
OR
Is there any way that first I will install cluster and than we can add the instances ?
What I have- Sql server 2012 (Standard Ed) Cluster on Windows 2012 R2 with both instances running on the same node- just to save on License, i.e. technically it’s Act/Pas cluster.
What I am looking for- how to configure cluster (e.g. via quorum, etc) to force both instances failed together? Means if for some reason 1-st instance will fail to node 2 another instance should follow (otherwise it will be Act/Act cluster and 2-nd license is required).
If there is no standard way (cluster configuration I mean) to do it I should create some custom process to monitor where each instance is running.
My environment has a 4 node cluster , 2 in primary and 2 in sec dc. Storage is sperate for both.
Need to setup always on for 4 Instances there on the 2 nodes of the primary dc. Is there any restriction in setting up always on for multiple instances for a cluster.
Is it possible to have more than one instance of SQL Server on a failover Active/Passive cluster? What are the concerns/ramifications if that indeed is possible?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have upgraded our test server and on non cluster production machine. My next server is a cluster and I don't have a test cluster server. Do I upgrade the active node and that is all or am I going to need to fail it over and upgrade the other node.
Also the prerequesite for the upgrade advisor is .net 2.0 I am going to up that on each server one at a time but I am only going to add the upgrade advisor to one node is that ok.
I read the SP1 documentation and it clearly states only patch the active node and do not patch the inactive nodes.
I'm reading up on Always on and I am confused what is the difference between AlwaysOn Availability Groups and AlwaysOn Failover Cluster Instances.
View 3 Replies View RelatedIt is an active passive cluster which doesn’t allow any testing. All instances have to be failed over together, we aren’t allowed to just failover 1 even for testing purposes. Node 1 is the active node and we can failover to node 2 for 30 days free of charge but services have to then be failed back.
We need to run the cluster with node 1 as the primary node always and 2 just use for failover testing or for less than 30 day periods whilst performing cluster patch upgrades etc.
Now l am sure we could fail over 1 instances at a time for testing and diagnosing issues plus if add a new instance that's not production to get to the platform level as the rest of the instances this would avoid taking production down in the fail over process.
Hi All..
We are planning to build a cluster environment on MS SQL 2005. We want to install multiple named instances in a single database server and use cluster for that database server.
Is this option possible ? Any relevant documentation would be helpful
Thanks in advance

We are running with a 2 node windows cluster having three SQL instances on it.
OS: Windows server 2008R2 SP1
SQL : SQL server 2008R2 (10.50.6529)
Currently both nodes have 256 GB or memory and we are having multiple auto failover for resources. What will be the best practice for OS memory reservation (OS+tools) so that we can set SQL max memory settings accordingly?

I have two Windows 2000 servers (Advance Edition) to form a Windows Cluster. I also install MS SQL 2000 Enterprise Edition on the cluster to form a MS SQL cluster. Now, I want to upgrade the hardware and OS (but keep on using SQL 2000), so I install Windows 2003 server Enterprise Edition on two new servers to form a new Windows Cluster. I am planing to install MS SQL 2000 Enterprise Edition on the new cluster, so the old SQL cluster and new SQL cluster are side by side. I would like to know how to setup a new SQL cluster (I know it has problem to rename SQL Cluster name, so how to fix this problem)? And how to transfer everything (such as system databases, users database, sql user account, password and maintenance plan jobs etc) from old SQL cluster to new SQL cluster? And how to switch over from old SQL cluster to new SQL cluster?
Thanks a lot !
