Connectivity Issues On SQL Express 2005 On Vista Business

Oct 1, 2007

I read your blogs regularly on SQL-Server Express 2005 which I have been actively deploying with my software product for about a year now. I have migrated most of my products to SQL-Server from Microsoft Access. I have found SQL-Express very stable and have had no significant problems. My products are mainly accounting based such as payroll systems, hotel management systems, school academic results management systems.

My favourite front ends tools are Visual Basic 6.0, and Microsoft Access. Typically, with MS Access I link to tables via the SQL-Server ODBC driver and all the client front ends share a common security file, an access work group file. I have been using this approach for up to a decade with no problems.

Currently I am deploying a hotel management system and payroll system in a hotel about to be opened. Against our advice, they purchased computer systems running Windows Vista Business instead of XP which we are sure our software suites, the wireless network and other software solutions such as CCTV work perfectly. This has caused a lot of problems.

On my side I had the extra task of dealing with Office 2007.
2 key problems arose.

After setting up a simple Ethernet network connecting the Vista computers I could not connect to SQL-Server Express in Windows Authentication mode via SQL Native Client and SQL Server ODBC drivers from another computer on the network (i could only connect locally); I could only connect to it from another machine using SQL Authentication mode, which is not my preference.

Secondly, I could not share the security file with more than one client of the network. The file seems to be locked exclusively by one client that first grabs the file, hence you cannot log on to software. This defeats clientserver idea. HEEEEELP.

A way round this was to have at least one computer on the network running XP (or any windows not Vista) and share the security file from it. I wish to know the reason for this behaviour on Vista.

As to the first problem of not being able to connect of SQL-Server Express 2005 via Windows Authentication mode from another machine on the network, I found the cause: The PASSWORD PROTECTED SHARING setting on Sharing and Discovery option for networking on Windows Vista.

When this setting is turn ON you cannot connect to the SQL-Server engine. The error Login failed for user ": Not associated with a trusted SQL Server connection is given. When I turn off this setting, I immediately could log on. I have validated this on several setups and this seems to the consistent. PLEASE SHARED THIS With others.

Thanks Dr Folami

Sql 2000 Connectivity Problem

Mar 28, 2001

I've recently upgraded a server from sql 7 to sql 2000. The server has two
network cards, so developers can connect through our private network or the public network. Everything works fine now except that we cannot connect through the public network via tcp/ip. i cannot figure out why. in the sql server log, it claims to be listening on both ips. Both ips are using the same port number(1433), is this bad? I did not change any network settings, i just upgraded sql, so i believe it's a sql 2K issue. any ideas?
thanks.

Vista Business ODBC/DSN To Remote Windows 2000 Server / SQL 2000

Oct 8, 2007

Hi,
Just upgraded some development desktops to Vista Business. However we need
to still connect to some older remote windows 2000/SQL 2000 servers.

Trying to setup an ODBC system DSN on our Vista Business local desktop we get the
following errors -

-START ERROR WINDOW-
Connection Failed:
SQLState: '01000'
SQL Server Error: 772
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]ConnectionOpen
(SECDoClientHandshake()0.
Connection failed:
SQLState: '08001'
SQL Server Error: 18
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver][TCP/IP Sockets]SSL Security Error
-END ERROR WINDOW-

Any help greatly appreciated as this is stopping us from making
database/table connections etc. We've checked the firewall setup and all is well there.

PS - we can still connect fine using XP or windows 2000 desktops and their
local DSNs.

Connectivity Between VS 2005 To SQL Server 2000

I have an application which is under development in VS 2005 but the database is in SQL Server 2000. We are facing some strange problem with the connectivity between VS 2005 - SQL Server 2000.
I have tried all the possible ways or solutions i found when searching in google but unable to find a solution. This had become a major challenge for us now to identifiy the root cause of the problem

Error:
"An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. SQL Server 2005 Connectivity From Windows 2000

Apr 30, 2007

We have an OLD vbscript process that is running on a Windows 2000 box. The box has Sql Server 7.0 on it (not sure if relevant). The process used to hit a Sql Server 2000 database, but that database was recently migrated to 2005 (on different server). Now the connection string obviously no longer works, and we can't even add a DSN to 2005 (does not recognize new server). The machine pings the new SQL server without any problem, but cannot connect for data access.

I assume there should be some driver that I can install to fix this, but have yet to find one on the web. Does anyone have a recommended download to remedy this?

Thanks in advance.

Unexpected Error With JDBC SQL Server 2000 Connectivity

Sep 3, 2007

Hi,
We are running one shopping site for our organisation, which includes Tomcat 5.0.28 , IIS & SQL Server 2000 SP3 hosted on platform Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Ed. , we are running jsp pages server side and site is hosted on internet,
but it is observed that after every 1/2 days , page will throw following exception, and site get blocked.

javax.servlet.ServletException: Network error IOException: No buffer space available (maximum connections reached?) : connect

Can anybody help please?

I am beginner with JDBC - SQL Server Connectivity ,

I am giving our configuration details:

Driver Used - Microsoft SQL Server Driver 2000 SP3

Protocol Used - TCP/IP which open socket connection on default port 1433

Authentication - Mix Mode Authetication ( using sa account login)

Even setting done within LOCAL instance running on server to allow max. connections i.e 32767

My observation is that some kind of virus threat may causing this error, because if server will be rebooted, we doesn't

get any error and everything works fine.

Waiting for your suggestions and advise.

Thanks a lot.

Managing SQL 2000 Databases On Vista...

Feb 23, 2007

I have one database at an ISP running on a SQL 2000 server. Under Windows XP Pro, I installed SQL 2000 administrative tools then I could use the database manager as well as the query tool to manage my database.

I have upgraded my machine to Windows Vista Ultimate. SQL 2000 client services won't install under Windows Vista.

Under Windows Vista, I was able to create an ODBC component that connected successfully to the SQL 2000 remote database, but I no longer have a transaction tool or a gui to manage the tables.

My goals are simple: I want to be able to view/add/drop tables and data using some sort of GUI. I would also like to have some sort of SQL transaction client. I don't need to do any high level database management, just view/change/add/delete tables in the one database that I own on that server.

My isp is NOT going to upgrade their SQL. I do not own Microsoft Access or Microsoft Excel.  What FREE software options do I have, given my goals?

Registering SQL Server 2000 On Vista Problem

Mar 11, 2008

Dear All,

My office computer just had Vista installed on it and I have now encountered a problem in SQL Server 2000 sp4. (Yes, I know it's old and has comparability issues with Vista, but I don't have the option to upgrade at this point.) I have two servers to register. One works fine, but the other won't register and returns the error "SQL Server does not exist or access denied. ConnectionOpen (Connect())". I was able to register this one server that isn't working while previously running XP on my office computer and even as a test on another server running Windows Server 2003. This leads me to believe the problem is isolated with my installation on Vista and not with any permissions, etc. I have been scouring different forums looking for a fix for this, but have come up empty handed. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

Thank you!

Installing And Running SQL Server 2000 On Windows Vista

Jan 17, 2008

Hey

Ive read on some pages that it is in fact possible to install and run SQL Server 2000 on Vista. In my university, SQL Server 2000 is still used to teach us about databases and how to administrate them. The computers run Windows 2000 Professional. I need to be able to use 2000 so I can not only have compatibility but also know the steps and all possible conditions and solutions to problems.
Would installing and running SQL Server 2000 on Vista be possible or am I better off using 2005? Is there much difference between these 2 versions?

MS Access Linked Tables To SQL Server 2000 Slow On Vista

Mar 13, 2007

I am using two almost idential laptops, one with XP and one with Vista, the only differences is that the XP laptop has 1G of RAM and running Office XP and the Vista has 2G RAM and is running Office 2007.

I have a MS Access database that has linked tables to a SQL Server 2000 database. The performance of the Access database on Vista is 5-10 times slower on the Vista machine. Just flipping through records or opening forms can take 5 - 15 seconds on the Vista machine while the XP machine takes 1 sec or less.

What gives? I looked at the CPU performance and the network performance while the Access database was busy flipping through records, the network traffic was < 2% and the CPU would spike to 40% on one of the CPUs (dual core) but would remain under 5% most of the time.

I also previously had Office XP installed on the Vista machine and it had the same performance issue so bought and install Office 2007 on the Vista machine and it did not solve the problem.

It seems that Vista is doing something that is slowing down Access with linked tables. Is this a issue between Vista and using an ODBC connection to SQL Server?

Thanks in advance for any help on this

Connecting To An External SQL 2000 Server From A Vista Machine With SQL 2005 Installed

Nov 26, 2006

hi there - I'm praying someone here can shed some light on this - after many google and web searches, I have found users with similar issues, but have yet to find a solution.
Problem: I have recently upgraded my desktop from Windows XP to Windows Vista Ultimate (clean install) and have migrated my local machine to SQL Server 2005. However I have a number of .Net projects that access databased on another server running SQL Server 2000 - prior to my upgrade to Vista, I was running SQL Server 2000 on my desktop as well. During the install, everything seemed to go well, and I also installed the SQL Server 2005 Service pack as instructed via the MSDN site.  However, when attempting to test my .net projects on my desktop pc (ie visit http://localhost), I encounter the error:
An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server.  When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)
note that the server I am attempting to connect TO is the old SQL 2000 server - NOT 2005.  I specify my connection info in the web.config - and it points to an external ip address on the web.
Can anyone shed some light on this?  I've tried enabling remote access on my local SQL 2005 install, but I'm fairly sure thats for servers that want to connect to my desktop, rather than my desktop attempting to connect to external servers. Any help is greatly appreciated - I'm pulling my hair out over trying to figure this out! :)
To summarize my setup (if it helps)
Desktop PC:Windows Vista (Ultimate)SQL Server 2005Visual Studio 2005II 7.0.Net 2.0 (ASP.Net Application)
External Server (co-located at a datacenter)Windows Server 2003SQL Server 2000IIS 6.0.Net 2.0 (ASP.Net Application)

 Much appreciated,
Ted

SQL 7 And BDE Connectivity

Sep 3, 2001

Hi,

I am responsible for an application that uses the Borland Database Engine to connect clients to the database server - it's called SalesLogix. I am in the process of upgrading the databases in the working environment to SQL 7 from SQL 6.5 and on the whole it has been (relatively) successful, however I have a majorly inconvenient issue with a few client machines. Occasionally, after upgrading the SQL client and having upgraded the database server I cannot make a connection any longer and instead when I try through the BDE I am presented with the message 'General SQL Error' and the BDE error code for a general SQL error, and nothing more. It has only happened on a couple of machines, but with no apparent pattern. The clients can still connect to SQL 6.5 databases as long as the SQL 6.5 client utilities are still installed so I don't know what to think. Any ideas?

Cheers,

Anthony
