you want to change it to by processor? The server is already up and

Jul 20, 2005Hello everybodyI've got a small system (~20 client machines) connected to one SQL Server2000. Two of these machines refuse to connect to the database. As I don'tknow how the license system is supposed to work, I haven't investigatedtoo much yet.My question is therefore:Will SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition refuse to accept any newconnections when all licenses are used?Is such case, what tool do I use to add more licenses?thanks in advance--Johnny Ljunggren

Does SQL Server actually block connections if they go over the license limit? I don't have access to the servers to see the model used but I have been asked to look into this. I have developed a system which has SQL server as a backend... Reading Microsofts Licensing required i m a bit puzzled if a CAL license is required for each user that is created on my system. i.e. If my system has 5 users, do i need 5 CAL licences.. however, in order to present the required data to these users i log to SQL server with the same single account.

As I understand it, if I have a 4 CPU box and I buy 4 processor licenses for SQL Server 2005 Standard, I can run 16 instances of SQL Server on that box.
Now given a cluster set up for active/passive I understand that if I license the same way I can have 16 instances on one of the nodes of the cluster. In the event of a failure, the instances can fail over to the "passive" node and the licenses move with them.
So heres the question. Given my two node cluster, each node has 4 CPUs, if I have some of the resources on node 1, and others on node 2, so instances are running on node 1 and node 2, am I on the hook for 8 processor licenses?
How To Activate Licenses
Mar 20, 2007I've just installed Workgroup Edition for the first time. I have copies on each of two servers, each ordered with five CALs.
My problem is that I don't know how to assign the licenses. I can't find anything in the documentation about it, nothing in the tools menus, and no reference to SQL Server in the Licensing application. The latter really looks like the right place, so if I had to guess, I'd think I've installed something incorrectly. Shouldn't SQL Server appear there as a product?
Of course, I'd also think this would be documented somewhere, but then it's probably one of those things that any idiot would know, so there's no need to explain it.
Once I get past that problem, I'll be setting up eight workstations. I understand from Microsoft Sales that since I've purchased a total of ten CALs, then all eight workstations will be able to access either server. Do I have to do anything special to make that work? Currently, there's no domain. The servers are just members of a workgroup.

I hope I am on a suitable thread. Sorry if I'm not. I just need to know if I need a license in order to write a commercial application using Visual Studio 2005. And, if so, is this license necessary to me as a developer or to my customer that will purchase the application at the end?
And something more. ASP.NET runs on IIS, which is shipped with Windows Server, correct? So, once my customer purchases Windows, he doesn't anything more in order to run a ASP.NET application (which will finally access the SQL Server DBMS). Is this correct?

So how can i know when the number of user connections exceeds the number of licenses per server (with the error 18458 - the maximum simultaneous user count of %d licenses for this server has been exceeded)? SQL Licenses In Multi-server ETL Environment
Jan 6, 2004My company uses a quad processor server connected to a SAN to load and summarize detail sales information from 2000 stores on a nightly basis. We poll and load around 5,000,000 rows of data each night. THis information is summarized up to various levels, then replicated to one or more secondary datamart servers for end user access via web reporting, BI tools like Proclarity/Analysis Services etc...
The initial data polling server is only touched by the development staff supporting the process (1-5 programmers) and is licensed for SQL server Enterprise using a CAL model. Each datamart server is licensed with MS SQL server processor licenses.
The question: We were told that the quad processor polling machine, which has no end user access allowed, must be licensed with processor licenses since it touchs the data ultimately consumed by end users. This makes no sense to me.
The Microsoft white papers discussing multi_tier environments don't seem to address this type of issue. They focus on applications that ultimately pass thru a data request to the SQL server machine. In this situation, user requests are handled by the datamart servers, which are licensed with processor SQL licenses.
Can anyone clarify?

I do not want to delete and re-install sql server if at all possible!

I'm looking to re-jig our in-house development infrastructure and part of that will be some sort of SQL Server product, and I'm hoping it will be the Developer edition.My question is, how many copies of the Developer edition would I need to purchase, if I have one Windows 2003 server (which will server the databases) and two client machines which will use it.My initial thought is 2 copies, one for each user (as the license states). But what about the server? Do I just install one of the two copies onto the server and the license covers the two client connections?This might seem a silly question with an obvious answer to you guys. However, am I right? Feb 17, 2004My objective is to use Enterprise Manager to move (copy) my SQL db from the server to my windows desktop computer.
I downloaded MSDE and am having trouble installing it, no doubt because I do not understand the documentaion (ReadMeMSDE2000A.htm).
When I try to run setup, I get that message that says:
"A strong SA password is required for security reasons. Please use SAPWD switch to supply the same."
Considering my purpose, do I need a "strong" SA password? If not, how do I get around it? If yes, how do I set it up?
I am a Mac user so I have poor windows skills, please make it as painless as possible for me, thanks!

SQL 2005 Thinks A SQL 2000 Backup Is Corrupt, But SQL 2000 Restores Just Fine
Jul 19, 2007I am attempting to move some SQL 2000 databases to SQL 2005. My main production database does not seem to want to move. When I use the SQL 2005 GUI the .bak backup file is marked 'Incomplete'. When I attempt to restore the backup file I get a 'RESTORE detected an error on page (0:0) in database' message. I saw a thread in the SQL Express forum suggesting trying to restore from the T-SQL level to get the GUI out of the picture and I get the same 'error on page (0:0)' message. However when I take the same file and use SQL 2000 Enterprise Manager it restores with no problems.
Any ideas?

May 19, 2008Hi, I am trying to edit some data from a SQL2000-datasource in ASP.NET 2.0 and have a problem with a column that has bit-data and is used for selection. SQL2005 works fine when declaring <SelectParameters> <asp:Parameter DefaultValue="TRUE" Name="APL" Type="boolean" /> </SelectParameters>When running this code with SQL2000, there are no error-msgs, but after editing a record the "APL"-column looses its value of 1 and is set to 0. Looks like an issue with type-conversion, we've hit incompatibilities between SQL200 and 2005 with bit/boolean several times before. So, how is this done correctly with SQL2000? (I've tried setting the Type to "int16" -> err. Also setting Defval="1" gave an err) ThanksMichael

Reconnecting Access 2000 Front End To New Instance Of SQLServer 2000
Jul 27, 2004I recently had to reinstall a new instance of SQLServer 2000, but was unable to use the previous server name. As a result, my Access2000 front end is not happy with it's linked tables. I can't seem to find anyplace within Access to universally change the address of the SQLServer used as the back-end for all linked tables.
When I do try to access the linked tables through Access, I get an error, and the option to change the server location. When I try to type-in the new SQLServer location, there is an attempt to reconnect to SQLServer, but a whole lot of errors are generated, and none of the data is transferred into the Access table.
I really don't want to have to re-do my Access front end, so it seems it would be easiest to somehow reinstall SQLServer to have the same server location it used to. Is there a good way to completely erase all traces of SQLServer so that I can have better luck reinstalling it to the same location it used to be in? Just using the uninstall program from SQLServer doesn't seem to be cutting it.

Problem Using Access 2000 As A Front-end To SQL Server 2000 Tables
Jul 23, 2005I've created a small company database where the tables reside in a SQLServer database. I'm using Access 2000 forms for a front end.I've got a System DSN set-up to SQL Server and am using links withinAccess 2000 to get to the SQL Server tables.My forms worked fine until I made a few minor changes to the databaseschema on SQL Server (e.g. added a foreign key, or added a column).After that, all the links break - I click on a table link and get anerror msg like "invalid object name."Deleting the links after a schema change and re-adding the links seemedto fix the problem. The forms I'd already created seemed to work fineafter re-creating the links.But then I got more advanced with my forms. I have it set up so thatfor certain entry fields, the combobox gets populated with values froma table (the description appears in the drop-down and the correspondingprimary key value gets populated in the table). I created a number offorms using this technique, entered data, and everything worked fine.Made a small schema change and it broke everything -- not the actualtable links, but the functionality for the drop-downs. My values nolonger appeared, and this was true for forms that accessed tables whoseschemas did not change.This is driving me nuts. Is there any way to keep my forms frombreaking each time I make a small schema change?Thanks.- Dana
